Gray Circle on startup

I have a Quicksilver Dual 1GHz desktop that started having some problems with the original hard drive (4.5 years old). I a new 160GB Seagate drive and installed 10.4.6 and have this problem: it takes a LONG time to startup, I initially get the gray apple, but after about a minute and a half into the startup cycle, the apple changes to the gray circle with the slash through it. The computer still has the spinning "segments" and after another 45 secs, I get the blue screen, and then a normal startup. The computer works fine. I tried all the recommendations found in this discussion group (I think) such as zaping the PRAM, resetting the nvram via open firmware, resetting the PMU, checking the battery voltage, and repairing the permissions - anything I missed? I'm just a little befudled with the gray circle, and then a normal startup, as slow as the startup cycle is.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris

Well, I think I fixed the problem. I didn't seem to have the same problem when I started from the Tiger install DVD (the gray circle), so I pulled out 3rd party USB2 card, reseated the memory and video card, and restarted. Still the same problem. As a last resort, I swapped out the original ribbon cable with the new one that came with the new hard drive since the CD/DCD drive seemed to work normally (thought maybe the ribbon cable had gone partially bad). The desktop is now back to speed.
As a side note, I ran the hardware diagnostics disk and everything checked good.

  • I am trying to sync a library from iTunes onto my iPhone 4s iOS7 however the songs won't load but there is a dotted gray circle around them. Can you explain how to sync my phone to this library please

I was talking to the Apple support and they said to join a chat. I am trying to sync my iPhone 4s iOS7 to my friend's library but the sync says its goes through (it goes through the six steps of syncing) but none of the songs go onto my iPhone. I put the sidebar on iTunes up and dragged the Music bar onto the bar that says Katie's iPhone. I then clicked down on the drop down for music under Katie's iPhone and the list of songs came up with dotted gray circles next to them. The circles are not filling up so the songs are not downloading on to my phone. Please help me download these songs onto my phone. Thank you

  • TS3680 Getting grey Apple logo and progress circle upon startup after removing "Everyone" as rights to Local HD

Hello, I am having trouble starting my 21" iMac running Snow Leopard after I had shared the HD with my MB-Pro. I had removed the "everyone - Read Only" rights on the HD (on the iMac) and opened sharing so my MB could attach to it. Grey Apple Logo and progress circle upon startup now.
Can changing these rights cause the system to not boot? I can go into single user mode but I am not sure what to do then. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I get that....er still can't paste the bugger.

Then I'm afraid that it's likely a damaged database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Small faint gray circle and line at top of the iphone

I noticed a small faint gray circle and a curved line at the top of the iphone just above the reciever and just below the silver trim. Does anyone else see this - it has to be angled right and in the correct light. I assume this is going to be the proximity sensor and the light sensor and everyone has it...just wondered as I didn't want it to be a fault!

it is the sensor, goto the link below

hope this helps explain, visuals are always better

  • Mac G5 Freezes on gray screen on startup.

I've been noticing a problem of a freezing computer on the gray screen on startup in the last month. I simply re-start my computer, and it goes back to normal and boots up fine. I've not installed and programs, utilities, or new hardware. My computer still has over 200 gig of free space.
Is this an indication of a worse problem? If not, is there something I can do to fix this? I regularly used the Disk Utility program to  check and fix permissions, so that should keep it somewhat clean.

Update your os.  Your profile confirms you still using OS 10.6.6!  You should be using OS 10.6.8 the last version of SL.

I was just wondering what do the different color circles mean when I've located my iphone. So far I've seen a green dot with a green bigger outlined circle around it , a gray circle , a gray circle with a gray bigger outline around it , a real big green circle like the whole circle is dark green. I'm mainly just wondering can you tell if they are texting or using the phone at the time or if its on off or on vibrate is that what those different colors mean?

The HDD or the connection to the HDD is faulty.

  • Why do I have a gray circle arrow thing next to a playlist?

One of my playlists randomly developed a circle arrow thing next to it (gray/white and doesn't move like it is downloading). It is a playlist I saved offline, I uncheck the offline tab and this circle disappears. I click the offline tab and it reappears. I've waited hours for it to disappear thinking maybe it is secretly still downloading or something, but it never goes away. The whole list plays offline fine so I assume it has to have finished downloading. But the annoying little thing won't go away and I have no idea what it is and the internet apparently has no idea what it is either.

Please try clean reinstall. You will have to redownload all your playlists again.
1, Uninstall Spotify from "Programs and Features" in Control Panel
    2. Remove all spotify folders on your PC
    3. Download and run CCleaner, clean and repair your registry.( http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/ )
    4. Restart your pc.
    3. Install the latest version of spotify.

  • I keep getting a Gray Screen at Startup on my imac

My imac suddenly went gray while watching videos and now it keeps going gray at startup.
I tried a safe start (holding the shift key at startup) but that didn't work.
    Any suggestions please.
    BTFrustration.

This worked for me:  from apple support....
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).

  • MacBook with circle at startup; laptop has broken cd drive :(

I bought a white macbook back in 2008 or 2009, I'm not sure what OS system it's running on, but I'm pretty sure it's OS. When I turn the computer on, the screen is grey, and the apple with the circle below it appears. For months I haven't invested into looking at why it is doing that (I bought a Pro so it's been at the back of my mind).
Now I'm trying to fix it without having to take it in.
I have a iomega hard drive and I tried using that to boot up the computer but I'm not sure how to go about that... I have the operating system on the hard drive and i pressed "C" when starting up the computer but no go.
The farthest I've gone is to get the giant hard drive icon to appear but when I click it it just returns to the circle.
Also, my cd drive or whatever it's called is broken so i cant put any disks in.
Fixing it would be more than just investing in another computer, so im hoping the external hard drive can save the day somehow. :/
Any help would be the best! Thankyouuuu.

Depressing the C key at startup instructs the Mac to startup from the disc drive CD or DVD. For all startup drive options (internal HD, external HD, disc drive), depress the Option key at startup.
