Great technical fonts info and examples

July's e-mail newsletter from H&FJ, Hoefler & Frere-Jones (who make fantastic fonts) has a great summary of info on "Fonts for Financials".
The newsletter has good background info on fonts with "tabular figures" meaning fonts that are specifically designed with two types of numbers, the second set being specifically for use in tables. (Examples: Archer, Chronicle Text, The New Gothams, Mercury Text, Whitney)
The newsletter also talks about "weight duplexing" and about condensed fonts for tables.
Finally, there are blurbs about fonts featuring "Indices", fonts with numbers or letters in circles or squares -- a fairly common question on this forum. Examples: Archer, Whitney Index
And about fonts for reversed printing (Chronicle Text, Mercury Text), and fonts with extended character sets including dingbats, currency symbols, fractions, etc. (Examples: Chronicle Text, The New Gothams, Mercury Text, and Whitney)
I'm trying to find a direct link to the newsletter on their website, but in the meantime I've included the font names above so that you can find them on the H&FJ website:
http://www.typography.com
ps -- H&FJ don't send out tons of e-mail, so if you sign up for their newsletter you might be lucky enough to get this edition first, the info and illustrations of each type of font and usage are well worth keeping for future ref.
pps -- no association with H&FJ, just an admirer of their fonts.

Here's a link to the newsletter I mentioned, with good graphics showing how the tabular numbers work.
http://www.typography.com/email/2009_07/index.htm
Good point on reviewing the licensing terms; these definitely aren't in the class of "200 fonts for free" at all, they're extremely well-done fonts,  with a pricing plan to match.
But  ohhhh, they're beautiful. And the technical explanation of what to look for in choosing numeric fonts is incredibly valuable info. Fair warning, it makes one want to strangle the next client who insists on Arial for tables ....

  • Fonts, Shapes and Click to display more info

Hi all -- This looks like a great forum. Much more active
than the Adobe Connect one! Just started with Cap 3. Initial
questions/problems I'm sure someone can help me with:
    - I have a graphic with four "areas" on it.I want the user to
click on a cell which will then: a) bring up more information,
either in text or audio and b) dim the other cells. I'd like this
to happen with all 4 cells. Do I set up hotspots? A quiz question?
How do I use the timeline to trigger the more info upon clicking
the cell? They don't have to click all four -- just those they want
    more info about.
    - How can I get change the default font face and size? Right
now I'm copying the text box I want from slide to slide and
changing the text. Everything seems to default back to GillSans.
    - Is there a way to draw basic shapes - rectangles, circles,
etc., or do I have to copy/import them from other programs?
I don't want to be greedy, so that's it for now. I promise to
help others out once I master this!
    Thanks!
    Lisa S.

Hi Lisa S and welcome to our community
Basically I would set it up as multiple slides. On the first
slide, have four click box objects. One on each corner. Click a
click box and it jumps to a different slide with all shaded except
the one you clicked. Then perhaps a button that links back to the
    original unshaded image.
Basically, you may "draw" rectangles using Highlight Boxes.
Or, you could draw other shapes using something like Microsoft
Paint or Fireworks, then import them into your project.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Font licensing and EULA: Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition

    Hi all,
I'm not necesarilly working with graphic design daily. However, I may have to replicate a design for a publication that uses Adobe Garamond Pro, which is why I got interested in Adobe - Fonts : Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition.
However, before I shell out the cash, I'd like to ask a few questions about related EULA's and font licensing issues - as the last thing I want to do is buy something, and then end up sued/financially destroyed/imprisoned anyways. (which is why I prefer with open fonts & software - at least no worries about prison, in case of misunderstanding the legalese)
    So, here are the questions:
I am a Linux user, and I primarily intent to use the fonts with xelatex. On the download page, there are two options: "Win" and "Mac". Which one should I choose? Related question: Adobe Forums: Install a Mac font on a PC:Windows can use OpenType, Windows Type1 and Windows TrueType fonts. Windows cannot directly read Mac TrueType or Mac Type1 fonts.
Macintosh can use OpenType, Mac Type1, Mac TrueType, and Win TrueType. Adobe products can read some Windows Type 1 fonts if installed in the correct folder.
Versions - possibly unrelated, but I've found this old comment from 2003 for 'Adobe Type Basics 5.0 Mlp (CD-ROM)':Unfortunately, this product includes fonts in the older PostScript "Type 1" font format instead of the newer OpenType format. Adobe sells an OpenType edition of Adobe Type Basics, but this is a download-only product. I wish Adobe would sell the OpenType Edition on CD.... so just to make sure: I would definitely download the OpenType if I buy from the above  Adobe - Fonts : Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition link, right?
Re-download - the Adobe Type Basics page doesn't mention the file format of the download, nor its size. With bought fonts, I'd consider installing whatever I need for as long as project lasts, then deleting everything from my computer, since I don't like proprietary stuff sitting on it. Thus, I'd be interested in re-donwloading the Adobe Type Basics package. So is this package a zip file or similar, if so - how big is it? Can I download the file multiple times after purchase? Is the number of times I can redownload limited?
I may have to do (in a role of page layouter for an academic institution) a document for a relatively big academic publisher (Springer); and I have little idea about how font licensing works there. Let's say I prepare a PDF which uses Adobe Garamond Pro, and embeds that font. Is it legal for me to just send that document to the publisher for printing, if I had purchased the Basics OpenType edition? I'm worried because I found in Adobe Forums: Install a Mac font on a PC:As I understand it, print service providers are required by the font EULA to own the font even though the customer provides it.
I suggest you ask your customer to purchase the modern OpenType versions of the fonts. ... but then, Springer are "publishers", not "printers"? How worried should I be about this? Should I ask for confirmation in writing from them, that they own the particular embedded font? Then again, since in this case I'd be working for an academic institution as page layouter, should the academic institution also buy the font? If the academic institution already owns the font, am I legally obliged to own it as a page layouter (even if I'd use that font on the institutions computers with licensed fonts on them)? I'm pretty sure I'd be legally obliged to own it if I intend to prepare the layout on my own computer, is that correct?
The download page mentions for "End User License": 5 computers. Say I install one Adobe Garamond Pro on one computer, use it there for the duration of a project, and then delete it from the computer. Is this computer then still counted towards the number of seats?
Occasionally, I have my personal notes and such typeset in Latex, and here I send them to a printer (as in, "print service provider") to print 2-3 copies in softcover for personal use. As far as I understand it, this does not represent a "published" book (and so there isn't a "publisher" institution as in the Springer example above). So, in this case, again the same situation: let's say I prepare a PDF which uses Adobe Garamond Pro, and embeds that font. Is it legal for me to just send that document to the print house for printing, if I had purchased the Basics OpenType edition? How worried should I be about this?

If you want Adobe Type Basics OpenType edition, then the fonts support multiple platforms.  OpenType fonts work on Mac, Win and Linux systems.
Versions - possibly unrelated, but I've found this old comment from 2003 for 'Adobe Type Basics 5.0 Mlp (CD-ROM)':Unfortunately, this product includes fonts in the older PostScript "Type 1" font format instead of the newer OpenType format. Yes, the Adobe Type Basics Open Type Edition would provide you with OpenType versions of the fonts.  Sorry that we don’t offer all the different fonts, font families and variations on CD-ROM, but it would be cost-prohibitive to make all those versions, and font software is relatively small compared to application software.  That said, Our font EULA (End User License Agreement) which can be found at: http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/pdfs/wf_EULA071111/EULA5seat_USEnglish07.11.11.htm l states: “2.5 Backup Copy. You may make a reasonable number of backup copies of the Software, provided your backup copies are not installed or used for other than archival purposes.” So you can make your own CD-ROM.
Re-download - the Adobe Type Basics page doesn't mention the file format of the download, nor its size. The file format is OpenType (CFF).  I would recommend making a backup copy of these fonts if you don’t want to keep them on your system.  Our Electronic Software Download service is not meant to be used for storage.

Wow!  Lots of questions here.  First of all, publishers publish.  Printing is just one form of publishing.  Embedding information for Adobe fonts can be found at the following:
    http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/additional_licenses.html
    http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/info/embedding.html
If you send a file to a print service provider and send a copy of the font along as well, then the printer needs to own a valid copy themselves.  If you send the print service provider a PDF version of the file, then you can embed the font in the PDF (but you would not send the a raw version of the font).  In this case, the printer doesn’t need the font, because it is embedded in the document.
The download page mentions for "End User License": 5 computers. Say I install one Adobe Garamond Pro on one computer, use it there for the duration of a project, and then delete it from the computer. Is this computer then still counted towards the number of seats?
If you buy a license for Adobe Garamond Pro, you have up to 5 seats.  So, it can be installed on a maximum of five computers at your company.  It is that simple to be in compliance.  If you were to obtain Adobe Garamond  Pro by purchasing Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition, then you can install the entire set on up to five computers at your company.  You are licensing the set, and the fonts cannot be split up and used across multiple users at your company.
Is it legal for me to just send that document to the print house for printing, if I had purchased the Basics OpenType edition? How worried should I be about this?
Yes.  It is legal to send the document to a print service provider with the font embedded in PDF.  You are printing a document, and your interpretation of what it means to “publish” or be a “publisher” is not relevant.  The words don’t even appear in our EULA.

  • Font Book and duplicates. Strange Behaviour?

    Hello,
I’d like to ask a question about Font Book and font duplicates.
Here is the situation. I’ve just installed Microsoft Office 2008 on a MacBook Pro (13’) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). After the installation is complete and all of the Office updates are installed, I went to Font Book to check for issues. Surely enough, there were font duplicates.
In all cases, the fonts installed by MS Office (/Library/Fonts/Microsoft/) are older than the Snow Leopard system fonts (/Library/Fonts/). However, when in Font Book I Ctrl-click to “Resolve Duplicates”, what Font Book then does seems counter-intuitive, to say the least: it actually disables the newer Snow Leopard system fonts and leaves the older versions of these fonts installed by Microsoft enabled. No matter what I do, I can’t get Font Book to leave the newer system fonts enabled and disable the older Microsoft fonts.
This seems wrong to me and a source of potential problems. For example, won’t disabling fonts in the system folder and activating older fonts in the Microsoft folder cause future problems for the OS X system?
Am I missing something here? Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Stephen

Thanks,  'noondaywitch', for your quick and helpful reply.
Indeed, Ctrl-clicking on the individual font families, and then also on the individual styles of each font family (regular, bold, italic, etc.), one by one, seems to do the trick.
I went through them individually, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to Font Book’s logic if you unleash it on the whole lot at once. In this case, unless I actually checked each style of each individual font family, it would appear that Font Book sometimes left older versions of a font activated, while disabling newer ones. To me at least, this seems bizarre. But then again, I’m not Font Book...
    Thanks also for the link.

    Stephen

  • Can we change font size and font type in reports

    Hi All Technical/Functional Masters,
We are developing some transactional reports in ISU. this report has 20 columns to be printed. On screen, display is not a problem but client has a requirement to download this report in PDF format and wants to print on A4-paper in Landscape. Although we have managed to accommodate all the columns on A4 paper but have to compromise with font size that are very small and not visible. If we download the report in excel format we are able to maintain the font size 8 and accommodate all columns after little format but same in PDF is a problem.
Can anyone tell whether we can increase the font size and change font type(from SAP standard to 'Arial') before sending the output in PDF ? Is there any property or utility that can be changed or used for this purpose.

  • How do I change the copyright info and links in collection pages?

Can anyone tell me how I can change the copyright info and links on a collection page using the new updated Public Site Manager?
    1. When I click on 'Configure selected collection' there doesn't seem to be an option to edit copyright information and I've tried editing the info in Settings > Copyright Notice but it doesn't filter through to the collection pages.
    2. When I click on 'Configure selected collection' the links tab is empty but on my collection page there is a link called 'website' which links to our University website but the url is incorrect so I need to change it.
    Example screenshot -
    Thanks

Also when I add a url list to a collection page and then delete all the links I'm left with a blank url list showing in preview page in iTunes. This should not happen, the admin guide says -
"To delete a collection page URL list, delete all the links in the list. When you publish, if you have a URL list with no links, iTunes U Public Site Manager hides the empty URL list."
It doesn't. At least it doesn't for me when I preview the collection in iTunes.

  • Can anyone help me write a script that would click "get info" and then "enter" on each movie in my itunes library? I am asking because my itunes 11 repeatedly loses the artwork to my movies in my itunes library.

Can anyone help me write a script that would click "get info" and then "enter" on each movie in my itunes library? I am asking because my itunes 11 repeatedly loses the artwork to my movies in my itunes library. I can restore the artwork (and make my apple tv see the movie exists as well) by going into the movie library and clicking on each movie by hand, slecting get info, and then selecting enter. Now doing this 10 times in 20 days was fun and all BUT I would really like to automate the process so everytime itunes screws it up I can fix it easier.
I saw this example of an itunes script that restores artwork for music
tell application "iTunes" set theSelection to selection repeat with i from 1 to count of theSelection tell (item i of theSelection) set artworkCount to count of artwork repeat artworkCount times set theArtwork to data of artwork 1 delete artwork 1 set data of artwork artworkCount to theArtwork end repeat end tell end repeat end tell
but I need to tweak this to fit my needs for simply clicking the "get info" button and "enter" in the movie library rather than all the stuff this guy has listed. Any ideas or help on writing this? Thanks.

  • Script to open excel files take info and put into new document

    Hi All
I am new to applescript, but looking through the forums it seems to be the solution to my problem.
I have large numbers of excel files on a pc server which i want to open, take approx 8 cells of information from each and place into a new excel doc, forming a list. I want this if possible to happen automatically, so if a new excel document is placed into a folder on the server, the relavent information is added to my list.
I have looked at automator but dont think it works with excel yet, and the programming in excel is too much for me.
I posted a query here in my previous job for a script of change all "/" symbols to "-" symbols, which worked very well and i hope someone more gifted can help with my new query.
Hope i have given enough info and that someone can help
    thanks

Supplied below is a, quick and dirty (minimal error handling), working self contained (applet) example:

open i -- Open each file.
repeat with j from 1 to 8 -- Cycle through the eight column values of a single row.
copy (value of cell j of row 3) to end of tList -- Obtain individul cells' value and place into 'tList'.

set k to 0 -- Location (position) of a 'tList' item.
repeat with i from 1 to (count dragged_Items) -- Set row value, of where to ener column values.
repeat with j from 1 to 8 -- Set cells' column value.
    set k to k + 1 -- Increment 'tList' location.
set (value of cell j of row i) to (item k of tList) -- Enter value into current rows' columns' cell from 'tList'.

    end tell
    end try
    end open
Save the AppleScript code as an applet (application).
Drag the desired files onto the applet for processing.
The above AppleScript code obtains the cell values of columns A through H of row 3 of each '.xls' file.
To automatically process the files of a specific folder - utilize the provided code, with respective modifications, within a

  • Set-up custom font, font size, and color for writing new and reply e-mails in Thunderbird

I know that I can select the font, size, and color for writing each new and reply e-mails in Thunderbird, but I don't want to have to do this each time. I want to set-up the default font, size, and color for all new and reply e-mails. It already comes up with a default one, but I want to change it, but can't figure out how to do this. I'm sure it is quite simple, but I don't know how to do this. Thank you in advance for help.

Tools > Options > Display > Formatting tab
    Default font: select font
    Select size : eg; 14
Click on 'Advanced' button and set all the sizes to 14
Select : 'allow messages to use other fonts'
    click on OK
    Click on 'Composition'
    Under the 'General' tab
Suggest you set HTML font to 'Variable width' and Size : 'Medium'
Select the 'Text colour' you would like to compose email using
Select the 'Background colour' you would like to use when composing emails.
click on OK to save all changes.
This will set the display email list to the selected font.
It will allow received emails to use the font the sender used.
When you compose an email it will also use the same font settings.
The message 'Display' settings in the above section also apply to messages that you compose. The settings are not sent, so they do not affect how your messages appear to recipients.
The settings in the ''Composition' section can affect how messages are sent. If you make unusual choices, then people who receive messages from you might find them difficult or impossible to read. Hence, why I suggest you leave it as 'Variable width' and allow the 'Display' settings to set the default used for composing emails.

At home and at work, I deal with a growing library of fonts- about 57,00 at the moment. We use FontAgent Pro at work and I just got it up and running from Suitcase X1 at home. One thing we're looking to do is print out a comprehensive font book, and we need an application that is up to the task.
FontAgent's font compare is primitive, and the last application we used to print out a font book was theTypeBook on OS 9. It isn't even being developed anymore! Does anyone know of a decent application that's comprehensive and versatile? We're looking for typical A-Z, a-z, 0-9, symbols, and perhaps a word or sentence.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Just to clarify, I have about 57,000 fonts currently. Also, I just migrated from Suitcase to FontAgent Pro at home.
Again, any help is appreciated! Thanks!
