Greek Data becomes Question Marks when passed through a Database Link

Hi All,
We have a 10gR2 sharing a Win32 Server with an MSSQL 2005.
Data transfers between these are set up using an HS Database Link.
All latin data is passing well, however we have some Greek in there and its transformed to question marks on the way.
Measures attempted so far:
1. I've set the NLS_CHARACTERSET of the 10g to AL32UTF8 . Entered non-Latin data manually to the 10g - works fine.
2. I've edited the relevant init.ora file to include the following:
HS_LANGUAGE = AMERICAN.AL32UTF8
HS_NLS_NCHAR = AL32UTF8
3. Restarted the DB and Listener.
Still question marks
Ideas?
Thanks
Tomer

HSODBC was never certified with NVARCHAR data types. Have a look at the Generic Connectivity Administrator's Guide. It list all supported data types and nchar/nvarchar/ntext is not listed. You can select from those data types, but there is no guarantee the content of those datatypes will be fetched correctly. There are no conversation routines that properly convert unicode content.
HSODBC has been desupported 15th of March. I strongly recommend you to use DG4ODBC 11.1.0.7. In addition in DG4ODBC the NVARCHAR/NCHAR functionality has improved a lot.
DG4ODBC V11.1.0.7 needs to be installed into its own Oracle_Home and it can be used with older Oracle database releases like 10.2.0.4 right out of the box; or you have to apply a compatibility patch to your Oracle database releas 9.2.0.8, 10.1.0.5, 10.2.0.3
Edited by: kgronau on Dec 10, 2008 8:42 PM
One thing I forgot to mention is the advantage of using DG4ODBC is it maps the nvarchar to Oracle nvarchar and thus there is no codepage translation required.
But please pay attention; use 11.1.0.7 not the base release 11.1.0.6 as on Windows based operating systems a high/low byte issue was fixed in 11.1.0.7 which is mandatory for NLS support.

  • Chinese characters in outgoing emails become question marks

    Hi, all. My AT&T Blackberry Curve 8900 loaded with the AT&T East-asian rom can read and write Chinese, in IM, email, webpages. There is only one problem with the outgoing emails. I can compose an Email in Chinese and send it. The email is displayed correctly on my phone, but when shown up in the receiving email-box, all chinese characters will become question marks.
    I am using Hotmail - I don't know whether this is some problem with the server.
    Thank you in advance.

    Make sure that you have installed East Asian language support:

  • TS2570 i see a folder and a question mark when i restart my macbook pro

    i see a folder and a question mark when i restart my macbook pro

    There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

  • My Intel iMac only shows a blinking folder with a question mark when powering it up. What can I do besides running the hardware test of the original installer disc.

    My Intel iMac only shows a blinking folder with a question mark when powered up.
    I did run the hardware test of the original installer disc and no trouble was found and I am out of options. Does anybody have any advice what to do next

    If the drive shows errors then repair, if after the 3rd pass of Repair Disk in Disk Utility it still shows errors it's telling you it's time to be replaced. Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for repair, when it comes back use your backup (either Time Machine or bootable clone) to restore so you can pick up where you left off.

  • TS1440 Flashing question mark when I start the MacBook

    Hello!, I have a MacBook Pro  but there was a flashing question mark when I start the MacBook, it does not go away, I have read the tips on you all site, but I can't find anything, it is for the Mac, not for a MacBook. Can anyone help me please?? Thanks!

    Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
    These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
    Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
    In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
    Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
    Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
    Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
(SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Flash changes apostrophe to question mark when saving data?

    Hi,
    Ok these are the steps I take to create the problem within my Flash application.
    1. Copy and paste a string from a word.doc which contains an apostrophe
    2. I then save this data to a XML doc.
    3. reload that XML data, now the apostrophe has changed to a square box
    4. I then resave this data
    5. I reload this data and now, the square box has changed to a question mark.
    My question is, how do I stop this from happening other than not copying from a word doc?
    Is there something extra I have to do when parsing the string into its saved format.
    Currently what happens is:
    1. Pass the string from the input box to an object
    localTextObject.textData = myInput.text
    2. The object is then parsed through a custom Object to XML parser
    for example:
    textNode.text = "";
    textNode.text.appendChild( localTextObject.textData );
    3. And then an XML file is saved local with this data in it.
    Does Flash do something wonderful along the way as so by the third time around we have gone from a speech mark to a question mark?
    Any help with solving this problem would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Apostrophes from word aren't part of the normal ASCII character set. They've been mucking up plain text forever...
    You can use a RegEx to strip them out, or just change them to regular apostrophes. Something like so should work:
    reg = new RegExp("“", "gi");
    m = m.replace(reg, "");

  • Dash becomes question mark

    Hi, I have the following Portugese text in my database: STIO VRZEA DO PARAITINGA AREIAS-SP
    When I display it on my jsp page the dash becomes a question mark and the String shows like this: STIO VRZEA DO PARAITINGA ? AREIAS-SP
    When i log the String it looks fine but when I display it using <%=request.getAttribute("subject")%> the question mark is there instead of the dash. If I execute the following code in the servlet the problem is resolved:
    subject=subject.replaceAll("","& ndash;"); With & ndash I mean the html for dash which can not be written here without it getting converted to &ndash;. Executing the replacement should not be necessary however.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Thank you for your reply. If I don't put the following in my jsp the page gets filled with junk:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">When I log the string before it's sent to the jsp it looks correct on windows but not on linux(!). The en dash becomes a question mark on linux.
    I have tried running the mysql database both on linux and on windows and I get different results. The text in the database looks like this if I run the database on linux:
    STIO VRZEA DO PARAITINGA ? AREIAS-SP.
    The text in the database looks like this if I access a copy of the same database when the database runs on windows:
    STIO VRZEA DO PARAITINGA  AREIAS-SP.
    Note the difference between and -. On windows I can replace the longer dash with its html code but on linux the dash just shows as a question mark directly from the database. I have set the database to use utf-8. The db was running on linux when the data first got inserted, now running a db with this data on window works. Why can't it work on linux? The problem is with the unicode character 'EN DASH' (U+2013)

  • Date field automatcailly changing when tabbing through other scripted fields

    I have a form with a datetime field. The object is readonly. I format the field with javascript as yyyymmddhhmmss as a tracking number for the form. When tabbing through other fields with javascript the value changes to the current date time, like the code is being executed each time a scripted field is entered.
    Any ideas how to prevent that? I just want the code to execute when the form is opened.
    ----- form1.sbfDirect_Pay.dteCurrentDate::ready:layout - (JavaScript, client) ----------------------
    // Current Date in short-style date format.
    // $.rawValue = num2date(date(), DateFmt(1, "))
    var varCurrentTime = new Date();
    var varYear = varCurrentTime.getFullYear();
    var varMonth = varCurrentTime.getMonth() + 1;
    var varDay = varCurrentTime.getDate();
    var varHour = varCurrentTime.getHours();
    var varMin = varCurrentTime.getMinutes();
    var varSec = varCurrentTime.getSeconds();
    if(varMonth<10) varMonth = "0" + varMonth;
    if(varDay<10) varDay = "0" + varDay;
    if(varHour<10) varHour = "0" + varHour;
    if(varMin<10) varMin = "0" + varMin;
    if(varSec<10) varSec = "0" + varSec;
    // $.rawValue = year + "" + month + "" + day + "" + hour + "" + min + "" + sec;
    dteCurrentDate.rawValue = varYear + "" + varMonth + "" + varDay + "" + varHour + "" + varMin + "" + varSec;

    I think I just answered my own question. The code was in the layout:ready event. This area is executed each time the layout is modified. I moved the code to form:ready event.

  • JPG Images show as "Question Mark" when browsing online in Safari

    How do I get my $2500 laptop to download JPG images consistently when browsing the internet?
    Currently, for example, 1 in 4 images posted on craigslist show up as a nice little blue question mark. Ridiculous... I could buy 5 PC laptops for the same price, and all will show the images.
    Really becoming perturbed,
    Chris

    There may be a number of reasons why the images do not show. Which browser do you use? Have you tried another browser? Have you tried creating a second account (useful to have a test account) to see if it happens there too? That would all help narrow down possible causes.
    Could you provide specific URLs so that someone could visit the same pages you are trying.
    The link between your computer and the router; or the router and your ISP may also come into the equation, as may Craigslist (I just tried and the pages I saw had no images anyway).
    What about the page you are viewing at this very instant? There should be some icons to the right, a couple of avatars (mine is an eMac) to the left: are these displayed?
    As others (including me) have no problem getting our 78,000 baht laptops to display images in the backwoods of Asia, maybe other reasons may be coming into play?

  • Flashing file folder with a question mark when starting my macbook after a few minutes it shuts down, any ideas??

    When turned on our Macbook flashes a folder with a question mark in the center screen, then it shuts down after a few minutes.  Doea anyone have any ideas how to boot the computer back up?
    Cheers

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on yourkeyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Installed Yosemite. QT Has Question Mark When I launch An Inbedded Video

    iMac - recently installed Yosemite
    I have videos embedded on the site Actors Access. I always use Safari. All the videos except the latest one that was upload through Actors Access work fine. The last one uploaded when previewed launches the box with Q and the question mark inside. Is this problem with the people who uploaded it? Is this a Safari issue?The video in question works fine on other Macs I own, including another iMax. But they are running on Mavericks.. Works fine on Firefox on my iMac with Yosemite. If 4 videos work on the Actors Access using Safari with Yosemite installed why does this particular video launch the QT Question mark. How do I fix i?  And I thank you for any answer.

    Can you share the URL so we can test the page and its code?

  • Folder with Question Mark when booting?

    Twice during the past 4 times booting my MacPro, I have received a folder icon with a question mark in it. I turned off the mac and restarted it and it rebooted. Why is it doing this?
    Thanks.

    Go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk, and check that your startup disk is set correctly. If it is, and you continue to see the flashing question mark folder when booting, try resetting the PRAM.
    It's also possible that your hard drive is failing. Make sure you have an up-to-date backup at all times. Does the S.M.A.R.T. status check out okay with Disk Utility?

  • I am getting a blinking folder with question mark when I boot my computer, what does this mean?

    This morning when I turned on my laptop, it made a weird ticking noise and now all I can get is a blinking icon that looks like a manilla folder with a question mark.

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 partition.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.
