Speed, Cache and Cookies

I've been trying to figure out why the speed tests at
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
gave me results significantly lower than the advertised speed from my ISP. When I was on the phone with support the guy told me to empty my safari cache and clear all cookies. Sure enough.. before emptying the cache and clearing cookies I got a download speed of 2500 kbps After emptying the cache it was closer to 14500 kbps
Has anyone else experienced this or understand why emptying the cache would change things so significantly?
Is a full cache throttling performance/speed somehow?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce

Download or Upload speed is also going to be affected by overall cable or telephone line usage, something you have no control over. For example, you may experience better speeds late in the evening versus the middle of the day.
Using broadband, there is no need for Safari's cache file. You can deactivate it either by:
Using Safari Enhancer
or -
Go to the Safari Cache folder located at ~/Library/Cache/Safari. There you can trash the contents:
- click on the folder in column view,
- highlight the next column components (cmd. A),
- then cmd. delete to move to trash).
- Do not trash the Safari folder.
To deactivate cache -
Single click on the Safari cache folder and Cmd I.
- The info panel for the folder will appear
- Uncheck the "lock" box.
- Go to the bottom (ownership). Click on the small triangle (details),
- Go to "owner" and change the permission to "read only".
- Next, click on the lock next to owner, and recheck the lock box.
This will effectively keep the OS from writing new entries to the cache folder.
Cookies are another matter, as some are important to keep (retain password information, or are required for site access (eg CC or Banks) while others are unnecessary.
I have found SafariPlus to be a great way to easily manage cookies in Safari. You can indicate "favorites", which facilitates the removal of any non-favorite cookies. The alternative is to manage cookies via Safari's preference>security panel, which in my opinion is a time-consuming task.

  • How do I get Firefox to show the proper font and layout of a site when it keeps loading an older version of that site? (I have cleared cache and cookies already)

    We are having a new website developed and my designer has made changes to it. Despite clearing the cache and cookies, the fonts are not showing up as the actual fonts. Also, the form fields at the bottom are extending beyond the border on the right side of the box on my screen, but this does not happen for other people using Firefox - it is only on my computer.
    I AM ON A MAC.
    I received a suggestion to reload the page and bypass the cache with:
    * Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)
    BUT - this did not work.

    You can reload the page and bypass the cache with:
    * Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    * Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)

    Error message is FAILED TO GET DISPATCH FROM IBRWSR2.  Then when you click on it the next error message says:  PHTML IS NULL. You have to click this error message twice and then the PDF finally loads. Happened every time
    Does anyone have a solution since Adobe will not respond?
    As a last resort I will try uninstalling the Adobe Reader XI and install Adobe Reader 10 instead. It seems to work ok. But when I try to install version 10 the Adobe site tries to install XI.  Any ideas?

  • I'm having to clear cache and cookies daily to have certain favorite websites appear normally - why does that intervention only work for a short period?

    I'm having to clear cache and cookies from the tools menu sometimes 2-3 times daily in order to make certain websites appear normally. The websites will have mostly script, which will be placed in columns, and very little in the way of graphics, maybe just a still picture of two. After I clear the cache and cookies, the sites go back to normal, but maybe after a few hours when I go back to the website it will re-appear as described above. The url below is the most commonly affected but it also happens on others like Yahoo news.

    In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
    #From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
    #Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
    #You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
    #To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button on PDF Viewer (what is this?). You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
    #Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.
    You can find further information about uninstalling extensions in the following articles:

    Hello binbingogoABC,
    Shopping on BestBuy.com should be easy and fun and not fraught with the kind of trouble that you describe. I regret very much that this has been your experience.

As soon as I have additional details about your situation, I will reply again to this message. In the interim, I'm sorry that I must impose upon your patience.

  • Cannot load newegg web site. have tried clearing cache and cookies

    Newegg.com fails to load nine out of ten time and takes over a minute to load when t succeeds. I have already tried clearing the cache and cookies as suggested in trouble shooting with no improvement in performance.

    Try:
    # Navigating to about:config
    # Searching for "intl.accept_languages"
    # Right click on the matching result and click "Reset".
    Newegg doesn't respond if you send a malformed Accept-Language header.
    There is some plugin that is changing the default value for that header (I'm pretty sure it is, or was, Firefox Sync)

  • Users forced to clear cache and cookies after server move

    We recently moved our ColdFusion 9 website from one server to a new and improved upgraded spec server. The site works great and the upgrades are a huge improvement. However, since the move last Friday we are being flooded with calls to our helpdesk because a user goes to our normal login screen, enters their username and password, successfully login (which I store their last successful login in the account in a database so I know it's passing all login scripts), but when redirected to the "successful login" message screen, it is not holding the session variables from the login page and prompts them to login again. It's a basic form with username and password, a simple query to check for an account with those credentials and then if found sets a session.usauthenticated and then moves them to the next page. This has been working on the old server with no issues. I don't believe it's a coding issue, because on everyone who has called in, if we clear their cache and cookies from the browser and then attempt to login again, it works fine and maintains their session. This has worked on everyone so far. So I'm thinking it has something to do with our users storing cookies from the old server and the new server is trying to access them unsuccessfully.
    Is there a way around this? It seems rather odd to me that there isn't an easy way to migrate a website to a new server and treat it as a new website to the user instead of something cached. How can we make our website work for past users without having to have each and every person clear their cache and cookies (we're talking over 300,000 users here so this could get intense). Most users won't know to do this so they are all calling our help desk which is being overrun with these calls right now.

    never fails, after you post a question, you find the answer.   For anyone else who runs into this, we had to purge all cookie and session data from our users prior to them hitting the login screen. After doing the following code, they were able to successfully login on our new server without having to manually clear their cache and cookies from their browsers.
        <cflock scope="Session" timeout="10" type="exclusive">
          <cfset structclear(session)>
        </cflock>
        <cfloop item="name" collection="#cookie#">
        <cfcookie name="#name#" value="" expires="now" />
        </cfloop>

  • Signing into Google home page requires me to empty Firefox cache and cookies and restart Firefox. Any way to avoid this?

    When I sign into my home page (Google), I often get a blank page. I then have to empty the Firefox cache and cookies, restart Firefox, and then when I go to the Google home page, I have to sign in with my ID and password. I have checked the box that says keep me signed in. This does not happen with Safari.
    I am running a Mac with OS Lion.

  • Crashing on clearing cache and cookies

    When I try to clear the cache and cookies from Firefox it crashes and is unable to clear the cache and cookies.

    If clearing cookies didn't work properly then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.
    *Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b> (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookies files like <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
    You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • How to clear cache and cookies

    Hi guys,
    I am new to jsf. And I have one problem in jsf, How to clear cache and cookies.
    Please help me to solve this..

    clearing Java cache and cookies is different from clearing IE cache and cookies. Usually when you powercycle your computer it is automatically cleared. To clear manually:
    go to start--> settings--> control panel--> double click on Java icon. Click on "delete files" under temporary internet files or 'clear cache' in the 'cache' tab. It depends on which version of java and which OS you use on how these will show up.
    If you were having issues with java crashing or making your freezing up, this should resolve the issue. It is strongly suggested that you powercycle the computer as well after clearing the java cache.
