Grey screen while using DU to repair TM backups.

I've been having multiple problems with applicaitons not opening, the finder not responding, and Time Machine backups not happening since Feb. 4 when I downloaded a large number of jpg images from a SD card to my HD. Have done that many times before with no problem.
I've been reading these discussions and have gone to related sites (Pondini) trying to find solutions to get everything back to normal. I've run Disk Utility in Recover mode and have repaired permissions and hard drive several times. No problems were reported by Disk Utility. I've removed the Time Machine disk in System Preferences and restored it. I've un-enabled file sharing and enabled it again in Airport Utility.
The common denominator seems to be Time Machine. No backups have succeeded since February 4. Tonight I read the instruction for repairing the sparse bundle disk (or the TM Backup disk image) and have followed the instructions to do that. I launched Disk Utility, selected TM Backups and selected Repair disk. The repair process is running. Then the display went to a medium grey screen in the middle of the disk repsir process. I've seen this grey screen before in the days since Feb. 4. At other times I've shut the computer down using the power button. But this time I don't know if I should do that or not. Does the grey screen indicate that nothing is working now or is the disk repair process on the TM backup disk going on in the background?
I am at a loss. Since I don't think it will hurt anything to leave it alone for now, I am not going to shut it down. But this has been a major PITA lately. I've spent a  lot of hours looking for a solution and a lot of hours shutting down my computer with the power button, turning it back on, shutting it back off, turning it on.
I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2 in November and other than a problem with not being able to empty the trash for a few days in January, there were no problems till Feb. 4. I upgraded our newer iMac to ML 10.8.2 in November also and there have not been any problems with that.
The computer that is having problems is a 2009 20" iMac.

I was able to open Console after shutting down. But the shutdown process was not as simple as it should be which is typical of how things are going lately. I selected Shut Down from the menu and it began the shut down process but got as far as a white/light grey screen and stopped there. So I finished the shut down by pressing the Power Button.
Here are the results of Step 1. I hope I've done this correctly. I copied the Full Report for one item. I apologize if this is overly long. I didn't know what I should eliminate, if anything.

You said you found several domain.sites files.
iWeb uses one at a time to create webpages.
Your webpages, your site, has disappeared with MobileMe.
You have to find a new host and publish there.
But to publish you need one of your domain files.
Try iWebSites to open them :

• F.E.A.R. 2 black screen while using Soundblaster X-Fi

This is my second attempt to get some support for a problem that is plaguing many trying to play F.E.A.R 2 with a Soundblaster X-Fi. We have been on the official forums for WBGames now for the past two weeks asking for help. Many were able to find solutions by updating their codecs however there are many of us that still cannot get into the game. WBGames official response it as follows...
Dear, xxx
Regarding your sound acceleration error and the sound cards you have used, we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced.
At the moment, we have been noticed that certain Creative sound cards (X-Fi, Sound Blaster and Audigy) and Realtek are presenting incompatibility issues with the F.E.A.R. 2 application. Unfortunately, Creative Labs have not yet released a patch to solve this situation, as other companies like Nvidia have worked on.
F.E.A.R. 2 is designed to function with Windows XP/Vista compatible graphics and sound cards. Drivers for these devices are provided by Windows itself or the respecti've card manufacturers and may occasionally result in incompatibility problems beyond our control.
If there is anything else we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at ">[email protected] m or by phone 080-0664-9456 (in Germany) during the hours of EST :00 pm - 0:00 pm, PST: 0am- 8pm MON-FRI.
Thank you for contacting Warner Brothers and have a great day.

I thought that someone with creative labs would be interested in either responding or releasing some kind of a statement in regards to this.
The current problem for us is when we try to launch the game a small animated orb runs at the bottom right of the screen while the game loads. At the end of the animation we hear a small chime and the screen goes black as though it is about to load the intro videos. But we get nothing. The screen remains black. I have exhausted all of their solutions, I have updated drivers and tried the latest beta drivers from Creative. I have removed, replaced, and updated codecs. Video card drivers are updated, etc.
Basically we are faced with the following dilema. We can disable the sound card in Windows and the game plays however with no sound. We can run the game in safe mode which manually disables the sound card and the game plays but with no sound. Leave the sound card enabled and run the game in normal mode and we get a black screen.
PLEASE, can someone with Creative Labs respond to this? We are looking for answers and would very much like to play this game.Message Edited by djdouglas on 02-20-2009 09:39 [email protected]

Re: F.E.A.R. 2 black screen while using Soundblaster X-Fi?

Pardon me but i'm looking your Quad SLI setup a potential culprit to your problems. Have you tried disabling SLI mode to see if the problem can be resolved?
That was my first thought when I encountered this problem. I took the steps troubleshooting video. Disabled SLI, Physically removed one video card. Updated drivers, etc. I am currently running the 82.06WHQL drivers which are suppose to be enhanced for F.E.A.R.2 and other games.
My next step was to try uninstalling codecs as their support team had suggested for people running into issues with the demo version (which btw worked perfectly for me). There were tons of reponses by the devs and community managers before the release of the game in response to people having issues (these same issues) on the demo. So they released a patch the day before the release of the game and when everyone installed the game the patch automatically installed. So for me and many others that enjoyed a smooth gameplay in the demo our rigs are now not working with the official release.
Since release we have yet to see a response or fix or suggestion from a dev. There have been many others in the community that have helped each other out by posting their solutions. For most updating their codecs using Klite or Ace Mega codec pack has fixed their problem but for a select few of us these solutions have not worked.
Basically I can launch the game successfully in safemode which disables sound. I can also disable the sound card and launch the game successfully although without sound. The codec that has seemed to be effecti've when replaced by others is the Microsoft IMA ADHCP codec. However for me I can disable that codec and get a hardware accelration error but still get a black screen. Re enable it and get black screen with no error. So I do not believe this to be the issue plaguing me. Ultimately it is coming down to a conflict with my sound board and the game.

• HT1758 Can i connect my non apple laptop to my iMac and use the iMac as an extra/dual screen while using my laptop?

Got a new laptop from work, no choice on the type, but want to plug it's docking station into my iMac so I can use dual screens while using the laptop. Can I use the Ethernet port for this?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Target Display mode only supports Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs to use them as external displays, but it only works over Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, not Ethernet.
Your PC needs Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt (depending on your iMac) to be able to use your iMac as an external display, so it is probably that you cannot use the iMac as an external display. Instead, look for information in the Internet about VNC viewers that allow you to do that

• Macbook pro screen stuck on grey screen while system working

Hi everyone. I would like to share with you a very annoying problem I am experiencing with my macbook pro since yesterday.
It's a 15" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz (late 2007).
I should start by saying that my macbook was already having, since months, a problem at the display which was kind of flickering at any movement. The Apple Center told me I should have replaced the entire display because the problem is due to a cable which is located inside the display itself and Apple does not provide this kind of repairs. Anyway I decided not to replace the display (which is a very costly operation) since I was very often using an external monitor without any problem.
Yesterday while I was working (without external monitor), the display suddenly freezed with a kind of blinking light. I forced the shut down by holding the START/STOP button for some seconds. Since then I tried to start again many times: I hear the standard startup chime, the computer normally loads for a couple of minutes until the screen get freezed on the grey screen with apple logo, I suppose right in the moment the desktop should appear.
The strange thing is that I discovered, after several attempts, that while the screen is freezed, the computer is normally working! It is regularly connected to the internet through my router and, even if I cannot see anything but the grey screen, when I press the STOP button and then the "ENTER" key it normally goes off.
I tried to connect it to an external monitor as I usually do, but this time it did not work at all. I also checked the hard disk by starting in target mode and found no problem in it. The hard disk and the system on it are OK.
I found on the web that late 2007 macbooks have a well known problem with geoforce video card and that apple is even providing free of charge repairement.
So I thought it might be my case, brought the macbook to the Apple Authorized Service Provider and asked about it. The people there told me that the Apple policy on the replacement is very strict and that classic symptom of geoforce failure is a black screen and not the grey screen with apple logo. They said they will check, but gave me very little hope. They told me that a logic board replacement is worth at least 600 euros which I think is too much for a 2007 computer.
Did anyone have this kind of problem? Do you find more likely to be a problem due to the video card or something different?
Thank you for any help.
Antonio

Holding the shutdown buttom down for several seconds solved the problem. When I booted my mac again, it continued with the update. However, do you guys think my mac have taken damage of this?

• Grey Screen while running a dvd/Sleep Mode

Hello everyone,
I have a Mac pro G5 PowerPC running leopard. I recently just did the apple updates on my computer and ever since then when I have a dvd in my computer after awhile I get the grey screen saying that I need to restart my computer. This has happened about 10 times since I did the update a few days ago. When it reboots I get the message saying that my OS X had stopped responding. I go to send the apple report and take a look at what it is sending and it is something about a kernal. I had a co worker recently say that his computer was doing the same thing with the grey screen when it goes into sleep mode. Is this a known issue at the moment?
When I come home from work and hear my fan running I turn on my monitor and have the grey screen. I thought it was my computer going into sleep mode that was giving me the error however when I rebooted and started my computer a couple hours later. In the middle of watching a dvd I suddenly got the grey screen. The same thing happened while watching a movie last night.
About 2 months ago I bought a new hard drive for my computer and used a program called SuperDuper to make an exact copy of my hard drive onto this new one. I then swapped the new hard drive in my computer. It has been running fine until I just installed the OSX updates.
I don't know if it is coincidence that when I am running a dvd that the grey screen appears since I have done the updates or that doing the OSX update has somehow made my OSX go bonkers.
Also is it possible since I installed the OSX on this new hard drive via this program and not from a disc that is the possible reason when I did updates that my computer's osx freaks out. If so why does it wait about an hour or so of being used to suddenly stop working?....
My other thought could be that my dvd drive is going bad and needs replacing and why would that make my OSX crash?.... if that is the case what dvd drive should I buy and install?
Sorry I don't know much about computers and all this stuff but these are just some of the things I thought might be happening and I just don't know enough about computer to say "yes that is why this would be happening"
Thank you everyone,
I look forward to your responses

Hi bessera;
You are suffering from kernel panics. These are generally caused by a hardware problem, most of the time bad RAM. I would suggest use the install media for you Mac and running Apple Hardware Test using the direction written on the DVD.

• Gray screen while using mac book pro

While using my mac book pro the screen suddenly turnef gray. I tried restarting my computer, but the screen remained gray. I don't know what to do please help!!!

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

• IMac goes to blank white screen while using have to unplug

For the second time now my iMac 2.8 ghz Core 2 Duo has gone to a blank white screen right in the middle of doing work. The machine sounds the same but the only way to get it back is to unplug it. I've searched around and found booting issues but that is not my problem. It just goes blank white right in the middle of using it.

Does the white screen have a series of small multicolored color "chips" on it? And is there a band at the bottom that is half "noise"?

...I inserted my reinstall disk and double clicked the restore icon...
What "restore icon"?
If you have the Mac OS X install disc in the drive, switch on your Mac, and hold the Option (⌥) key.
You will see a grey screen, with Macintosh HD & after a few seconds, a CD with Mac OS X Install DVD.
Click on the DVD and then the arrow underneath it. This will start up the Mac OS X installer.
From here, you need to choose your language and then from the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility.
Then choose Macintosh HD from the left, and choose "Verify Disk" not permissions
Let us know how you go.

• Turn off laptop screen while using iTunes? Or best screen saver?

Is there a way to turn off the iBook display and still let the computer use iTunes? I can't find anything on this. If that isn't possible, what would be the best screen saver for actually saving the screen? If you know what I mean....

That does work--thank you. I wanted this solution for iTunes. This came to my attention when a friend of mine was using his MacBook to run a movie on a television, and he was complaining about the fact that the MacBook display could not be shut off while exporting the feed to the tv. You've answered my question, but I'm going to amend the topic to include shutting off screen while exporting a video feed--perhaps someone knows the answer to that. (I don't have anything to port a feed too, or I'd try it myself.) Thank you!
