Group Policy - Computer preference - Schedule task creation
Hello,
We are getting error while applying schedule task creation GPO (from Windows 2012) to system windows 2008 R2.
Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80041316 The task XML contains an unexpected node.' This error was suppressed.
As recommended in many threads, we have made the settings to run the schedule task with user which is "NT Authority\System" (selected user manully from Damain -> Building group -> System). After changing, we observe that task is getting
created but we keep on getting warning messages in event viewer. In GPO -> schedule task -> setting is to "update" schedule task (not create or replace).
Below is excerpt from traces file while applying GP.

Scenario:
We use one of the following Group Policy Preferences Scheduled Tasks item to deploy a task to clients:
Computer Configuration -> Control Panel Settings -> Scheduled Tasks -> New -> Scheduled Task (At least Windows 7)
Computer Configuration -> Control Panel Settings -> Scheduled Tasks -> New -> Immediate Task (At least Windows 7)
User Configuration -> Control Panel Settings -> Scheduled Tasks -> New -> Scheduled Task (At least Windows 7)
User Configuration -> Control Panel Settings -> Scheduled Tasks -> New -> Immediate Task (At least Windows 7)
(Note that on some platforms, "At least Windows 7" is replaced with "Windows Vista and later.")
After designating a user account to run the task, we select “Run whether user is logged on or not” option, and “The Do not store password…”
check box is automatically grayed out (See Figure 1).
Figure 1
After finishing configuring the task item, on a client, we run command
gpupdate/force to forcefully update group policy. However, on the client, when we check if the task is listed in Task Scheduler snap-in, the task is not displayed, and when we run
gpresult/h report.html to collect group policy result for troubleshooting, we see an error as similar as shown in the following figure (Figure 2).
Figure 2
Cause:
To make the scheduled task run whether the user is logged on or not, we need to store the password of the designated user account. However, for the content of the scheduled
task item is stored in Sysvol where it’s not safe to store passwords, this function has been deprecated.
Workaround:
We can run the task with system account
NT Authority\System, or we can use specific user accounts to run the task when the given user is logged on. (See Figure 3)

Succeeded !!!!!!!
Even i was struggling with this same Problem to execute a batch via Window scheduler and set the setting to "Run whether the user is logged in or not".
I tried many time but the batch runs with " Run
whether user is logged on" and not with "Run
whether user is logged on or not".
what i discovered is that there was one mapped drive
path in my batch file which was not the complete path like y:/AR.qvw actually what i did i changed that map path to the complete path like \\servnamename\d$\AR.qvw and the batch executed successfully with the setting "Run
whether user is logged on or not"
The
conclusion is that check the dependency of the script on external resources because when you check this option "Run
whether user is logged on or not" It actually conflicts. This my discovery.

Group Policy - Computer Startup Scripts - Add/Set Default printer
Good Morning.
Let's say we have 2 offices, A and B, and only 1 user. The user is using Roaming Profiles. Each office has its own printer.
What I am trying to do, is make a Startup script that is specific to the COMPUTER being logged into so when any user logs into that computer, they get the printer in that office defined and set as default.
I am able to do this successfully with my script but ONLY if i have the script be on the USER side of GP (i.e. in the Logon script section)
That is great that that is working however, when my user goes to Office B, they still get mapped to Office A's printer if I use that method.
So I figured I could just modify my GP and run the same script from the STARTUP section of the computer, rather than the LOGON section of the user. It does not work.
Here is my script:
Set WRFCUNetwork = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")
PrinterPath = "\\fileserver\MAINTELLER"
PrinterDriver = "PrinterDriver"
WRFCUNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath, PrinterDriver
WRFCUNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\fileserver\MAINTELLER"
This is where I Have the script placed:
Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Scripts(Startup/Shutdown)
Once i'm in there, I double click Startup, click Add, and select my script which is named:
MainPrinterSetup.vbs
I have this GP applied to ONE OU, and that OU has ONE computer in it (my test computer)
I login with a brand new user called "testuser" (creative, huh?) and basically nothing happens
except they log in and have some Microsoft Document Image Writer printer set as default (which by the way sure does slow the PC down to the point of it almost being broke if anyone actually tries to print to that by accident)
No Main Teller Printer, no anything.
The strangest part about this is, if i apply this script to the user LOGON scripts, it works fine, the printer is there, and is set as default. (but see above why that wont work for my situation)
So obviously the script works fine, but I guess i'm missing something when it comes to applying GP's to Computers rather than Users.
Can anyone shed some light as to why the script is not running (i'm guessing the script isn't even attempting to run, rather than failing, but i have no way to know that)
Thank you in advance!!

EDIT: Here are the PC's info that i'm working on:
Server: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (where my GP's are created and managed with AD)
Target PC: Windows XP Professional SP3
EDIT #2: I manually navigated to the Script file after logging in and "opened" it and it added and set the default printer no problem. the issue is definately with the script running at startup.I wanted to clarify a few things:
1. While it is true that printer connections are usually per user, it is definitely possible to create "global printers". There are a number of ways to do this, but two methods that come to mind are using:
a. "Rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry" option with the "/ga" switch. The "/ga" switch is the key here since it allows you to deploy printers "per machine" instead of "per user". More information
about this is available at:
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterAllUsers.htm
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624057%28WS.10%29.aspx
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/Logon/logon_printer_computer.htm
http://www.robvanderwoude.com/2kprintcontrol.php
b. The Print Management console that is available in Windows 2003 R2 and higher can help you deploy printers "per machine" in addition to "per user". More information about this is available at:
http://www.czsolution.com/print-management/print-management/print-management-console.htm#DeployingPrintersByGroupPolicy
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753109%28WS.10%29.aspx
2. As Guy mentioned, Group Policy Preferences can help set the default printer. But there is another way to accomplish this. The problem with the computer startup portion is that it runs before the user logs in. And applying this script
in the login script section would not work per computer unless you used loopback processing. So another way to do this is to place a script that sets the default printer into the "All Users" startup folder. Items in the "All Users"
startup folder run for any user that logs into the computer, but it runs in the user's context. So, this script would effectively set the default printer on a "per machine" basis. The script method is a cruder way to approach the problem,
but it will help get the job done. Here are some resources on setting the default printer via script:

Group Policy refresh after a task sequence has completed
Hi
I would like to force a Group policy refresh after my OSD task sequence has completed. At the moment, my TS completes, I get the Deployment Complete window and I click on Start Windows. Windows starts up but my Computer based Group Policies have
not applied so I need to restart the machine immediately.
My question is, how can I refresh group policy but still retain the Deployment Complete window ? I have tried using the
SMSTSPostAction Task Sequence variable to set a gpupdate /force
to run after the TS completes but it just hangs. I set it to gpupdate /force /wait:0
and this seems to run and I get my Deployment Complete window, but my Group Policy still isn't applying. I have tried setting the
SMSTSPostAction Task Sequence variable to shutdown /r
which reboots the machine, but then i don't get the Deployment Complete window at the end of the build.
Any other ideas ?
Cheers
GHi
AFAIK On Windows Vista and later Operating Systems, Group Policies are processed after the Task Sequence is finished. Including restarts during the Task Sequence will not help and a manual reboot is required after the TS is completed.
As a workaround you can write a script to run Gpupdate and reboot the machine. Deploy this script as a Mandatory Application, which will run as soon as the OSD finishes.
Alternatively can try using a Run Once registry for gpupdate /force . This will ensure that the Group Policies are updated when the user logs in for the first time.

GPO Preference Scheduled task not working
Hi,
System info: Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7
I created a group policy object which switches off automatically all client PCs at 2AM everyday.
But this did not work..the task is running as domain admin.
I have checked GP result and that setting was applied successfully.
Are there other ways to troubleshoot this issues?> So far in my experience, GP Modeling always help me to troubleshoot why
> such GPO is not being applied to a particular user or computer.
Skip Modeling, use Resultant Report :) And gpupdate - if neccessary at
all - has to be run on the client.

GUTES Buch über GPOs lesen?
NO THEY ARE NOT EVIL, if you know what you are doing:
Good or bad GPOs?
And if IT bothers me - coke bottle design refreshment :)) -
Here is a basic question. Which should I use, IEAK or Group Policy or how are they related?
I have a bunch of Windows 7 IE 9 users who have proxy settings, default favorites, and maybe some other settings set via Group Policy with Server 2008 R2 and Server 2003 R2 domain controllers. Some users upgraded to IE 10 and subsequently discovered
that the favorites and proxy settings (or any Internet Explorer settings?) do not work through Group Policy.
So, I read that one can use 'Group Policy preferences', but doing that will require running Group Policy from an upgraded Windows 7 machine or something like that because the domain controllers can't recognize IE10 or higher. But then, I also see that there
is this Internet Explorer Administration Kit which can supposedly set various configuration items.
So, what will work? Do they work together? What gives?
I want to set IE configuration of Windows 7 machines with IE 9 or 10.Ok, I found at least a partial answer from Appendix B: Replacements for Internet Explorer Maintenance (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj890998.aspx)
"Any settings that you previously configured with IEM will no longer work on computers where Internet Explorer 10 or newer is installed, regardless of the Windows version it’s been installed on. You must update your settings using Group Policy Preferences,
Administrative Templates (.admx), or the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK).
Because Group Policy Preferences and IEAK 10 use asynchronous processes when they run, we recommend that you choose to use only one of the tools within each group of settings ... In addition, it's important to remember that policy is enforced
and can't be changed by the user, while preferences are configured, but can be changed by the user."
So, IEAK it looks like allows the creation of an install and configuration or just configuration of Internet Explorer that must be applied via a logon script or something as a one-time configuration and has nothing to do with Group Policy. Presumably,
I can still do everything that was done before and more with just Group Policy via "Preferences" and Administrative Templates (.admx) (depending on whether I want to enforce settings or not or what settings are available in each).
I guess I just need to start digging into figuring out how to implement Group Policy now and what settings can be set. -
When using Group policy computer configuration control panel settings \printers you can specifiy both an IP address port and a path to the print server. Are these connections for local TCP\IP printers or for network print server printers. I am
not sure why I would have to specify path to server if they were local TCP\IP printers or vice\versa(specify IP address if they are only network printers). The best spot for Group Policy Preferences questions is in the Group Policy forum
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=winserverGP&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc
However, since they included this print related setting I do know what you are asking about.
The share is used to get the print driver installed on the client for adding the local printer. This will not work if you use type 4 print drivers since the drivers are not downloaded to the clients and the GPP printing scenario falls apart here.
I totally agree with you that this is confusing, however, as a print server admin, what I would do is create one share for each print driver that you need to install on the clients. If you have 80 printers that can use the same driver, create one share
and just update the GPP data with the IP for the specific device.
I would not use a print server to act as a software distribution point if the number of clients on your network is less than 100. Setup a Win7 or Win8 machine with the shares.

Group Policy - User Rights Assignments not taking effect on workstation`
Novell 5.1 SP7. ZenWorks 3.2 sp3. Windows XP Pro workstations.
In Group Policy, (Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security
Settings/Local Policies/User Rights Assignment), I have added Power Users to
the "Load and Unload device drivers" policy. However this setting is not
taking effect on my Windows XP workstations. My DLU policy for users is
configured to have the users members of the "Users" and "Power Users" groups
on the local PC.
Other parts of Group Policy (Computer Policy/Administrative Templates) are
taking effect on the workstation, so I'm wondering if the problem I am
having is related to Security Settings only.
I enabled Group Policy logging on the Windows XP workstation and include it

Issues adding TCP/IP Printer with Group Policy
I have been trying to add a TCP/IP Printer using group policy, User Preferences. I can add a HP Laserjet 4600 Printer but I'm not able to add the second printer a Canon iRC4580. It keeps coming up with issues stating "The object selected does not match
the type of destination source. Select again" I have read through multiple tech forums on this error and I have tried unlisting the printer and listing it again in the directory. I have also tried renaming it to a short name without spaces. neither of
these have resolved the issue. I have also tried creating a new printer from scratch for the canon and this doesn't resolve it either.
Anyone out there who can help.

How can I setup a scheduled task to run a Powershell Script delivered as a Group Policy Preference
I have a Powershell script I want to run only once when a user logs onto their system. This script would move all the PST files from the Local drive and the Home drive to a folder location within the users profile. I wanted to run this as a Windows 7 Scheduled Task using Group Policy Preferences. How can I get this to happen short of a logon script? I have updated all the machines to WMF 4.0 so could I use a Scheduled Job instead? I wanted to run the script as the logon user but elevated.#Start Outlook and Disconnect attached PST files.
$Outlook = New-Object -ComObject Outlook.Application
$namespace = $outlook.getnamespace("MAPI")
$folder = $namespace.GetDefaultFolder("olFolderInbox")
$explorer = $folder.GetExplorer()
$explorer.Display()
$myArray= @()
$outlook.Session.Stores | where{ ($_.FilePath -like'*.PST') } | foreach{[array]$myArray+= $_.FilePath}
for
($x=0;$x-le$myArray.length-1;$x++)
$PSTPath= $myArray[$x]
$PST= $namespace.Stores | ?{$_.FilePath -like$PSTPath}
$PSTRoot= $PST.GetRootFolder() #Get Root Folder name of PST
$PSTFolder= $Namespace.Folders.Item($PSTRoot.Name) #Bind to PST for disconnection
$Namespace.GetType().InvokeMember('RemoveStore',[System.Reflection.BindingFlags]::InvokeMethod,$null,$Namespace,($PSTFolder)) #Disconnect .PST
#Move All PST files to the default location while deleting the PST files from their original location.
$SourceList = ("$env:SystemDrive", "$env:HOMEDRIVE")
$Destination = ("$env:USERPROFILE\MyOutlookFiles")
(Get-ChildItem -Path $SourceList -Recurse -Filter *.PST) | Move-Item -Destination $Destination
#Attach all PST files from the default location.
Add-type -assembly "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook" | out-null
$outlook = new-object -comobject outlook.application
$namespace = $outlook.GetNameSpace("MAPI")
dir “$env:USERPROFILE\MyOutlookFiles\*.pst” | % { $namespace.AddStore($_.FullName) }Mike,
I do not understand what appears to be a regular expression above. I did add the PowerShell script to the HKCU RunOnce Key as suggested.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -noprofile -sta -WindowStyle Hidden -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -File "C:\scripts\Windows PowerShell\Move-PST.ps1"
I'm delivering this using Group Policy Preferences. It seems to fail or time out when run because the behavior is different if I run the script from within the PowerShell IDE. I added the parameters to the script and will try it again in the morning. -
GPP Scheduled Task Fails in Group Policy Modeling depending on DC
We have multiple domain controllers running at a 2003 functional level.
We have 1 DC running Server 2003 x86 SP2 and the rest run Server 2008 (maybe R2)
I created a GPO that includes a Scheduled Task Group Policy Preference under Computer Configuration.
In order to test this I used Group Policy Modeling in the GPMC on a 2008 R2 Machine where I am editing Group Policy.
If I run the modeling (perform the simulation on the 2003 DC it fails. (Note I am modeling the GPO for a different computer, not the 2003 SP2 DC, I am running the modeling for a Workstation)
Information from the Component Status on the Summary Tab of the Modeling Report
Component Name Status
Group Policy Infrastructure Success
EFS recovery Success (no data)
Group Policy Scheduled Tasks Failed
Group Policy Scheduled Tasks failed due to the error listed below and failed to log resultant set of policy information.
Additional information may have been logged. Review the application event log on the domain controller on which the simulation was run for events between 2/28/2014 10:07:36 AM and 2/28/2014 10:07:36 AM.
Registry Success
Security Success
Info on the Settings Tab of the Modeling Report below.
An error has occurred while collecting data for Scheduled Tasks.
The following errors were encountered:
An unknown error occurred while data was gathered for this extension. Details: Invalid class
If I run the modeling using a 2008 DC to perform the simulation it works fine.
Per the instructions on the Summary Tab regarding the scheduled task failure I look at the event log on the 2003 domain controller and this is what i find.
The event I get on the 2003 DC is 8196 and I will place the details below.
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Group Policy Scheduled Tasks
Event Category: Disk
Event ID: 8196
Date: 2/27/2014
Time: 4:48:47 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: <computername>
Description:
The client-side extension caught the unhandled exception '0xC0000005' inside: 'threadEntry : client main' See trace file for more details. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
So, should I be concerned that this is failing on the 2003 DC, does this mean that if my workstations authenticate to my 2003 DC that the preference will not process?
I was reading that in 2003 client side extensions were not there and can be installed, would this make the modeling succeed?
How do I get verified, I tried to post screenshots, but I could not. :(Hi Jonathan,
As you have found the reason, I want to confirm whether the issue has been fixed.
In fact, for Windows Server 2003 to apply or process Group Policy Preferences settings, we must install client-side extensions of GPP for Windows Server 2003.
Although this is not related to this case, for your information, if our clients are Windows XP or Windows Vista, to use GPP, we must install client-side extensions for these
workstations respectively.
Regarding GPP, the following article can be referred to for more information.

Group Policy Preferences - Registry change - time targetting
I have a customer who wants to change the timeouts etc on a screensaver based on the time of day.
Users often leave a machine open and on(with Bloomberg info) and work using another machine while they keep an eye on the Bloomberg one.
The plan is to have these machines running Bloomberg have a long screen timeout during the working day, and then go back to the default screensaver timeout after that so the users don't have to continually enter a password.
Looking at GPP it needs to be done via a registry change.
I've created the policy (screensaver, lock and screensaver on are all set (3 reg updates), then 2 time targeted additional reg updates for the screen saver timeout), but the policy only applies at logon or a forced gpupdate. It doesn't update when
the time change occurs.
If I run a "gpupdate /force" the policy does change based on time. I have tried a scheduled task for "gpupdate / force" and that didn't apply the change.
Is GPP registry just not up to the job for time scheduling with a registry change, or am I doing something wrong?
All machines are Win7 pro x64Hi JaseFromLodon,
To make it work ,we can set this policy to have a check.By default, computer Group Policy is updated in the background every 90 minutes. We can change this time to "0" instead of creating a task schedule and the update will be performed every 7
second.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy \Set group policy refresh internal for computers
Here is a link for reference
Group Policy refresh interval for computers
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc940895.aspx
For the time range faeture ,I am sorry I didn`t explain the issue clearly .
Pay attention to the "note " in step 13 of the link as you posted .
"Make sure you allow for the policy refresh interval (default 90 minutes with a 20% random offset) when configuring the start and end time. This means you might want to start applying the policy 2 hours before the start of business (e.g. 6:30am) to make
sure all the computers are configured with the Business Hours Power Plan before people login in the morning (e.g. 8:30am)."
The time targeting feature doesn`t mean the preference settings will be applied according to the specific time we have set .It means the preference settings will be applied to the machines whose time is included in the time range .Please pay attention to
the explanation of the time range features carefully (the screenshot I have posted).
Manually "gpupdate /force "will work .I suspect the task schedule hasn`t been set correctly .Please check the running history of this task schedule.

Registry Wizard not saving selections in Group Policy Preferences.
Hello,
I am trying to set registry keys for ODBC settings using Group Policy Preferences. All PC's in the domain are Windows 7. In testing, I was able to get this to work. Now that I am trying to create it for production, I am unable to get it to work.
I am using the same PC to create for production that I used when I was testing.
The steps I am taking are as follows:
Create a new GPO. Edit the GPO and navigate to the registry node under Computer Configuration, Preferences where I create a new Collection Item. I then right click the new collection item and choose New - Registry Wizard. Using Local Computer,
I navigate to [HKLM] > Software > Wow6432Node > ODBC > ODBC.ini
Under the ODBC.ini key are all of the keys and data I want to include in my policy. When I check each key and put a check mark beside each data item in the lower window, my selections in the lower window are not being saved. The check mark
shows up at the time but they are gone if I go back to check my work before hitting the finish button. If I go ahead and finish the policy anyway, I only get the keys, not the data items when the GPO is applied.
I have found a work around but it is very cumbersome and isn't a good long term solution. The work around is to go ahead and create the policy, then go back into the collection and expand everything on the left and add each data value to each key one at
a time using the All Tasks > Add - menu item.
Any ideas why this is happening? I should also mention when I was "testing", I was hitting the same domain controller as I am when trying to build this for my "production" policy.
Thanks in advance.Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I am waiting on my account to be verified before I can post a screen shot.
I did discover that if I go through and click on all the data items more than once, it appears to work. Basically, I went through each key and checked the data items, then went back to the top and started over again. All of the checks were gone, so I checked
them again and clicked finish. I don't know if they were still missing but checking them twice seems to have worked.
I can replicate the issue if I only check them once. -
