GRUB/MBT-- GPT partitioning on BIOS-based Motherboard

Hi,
I have a BIOS-based motherboard, dual (1.5TB) drive, dual boot (Arch/Win7, both 64b) PC, and use GRUB (current, not legacy) bootloader installed on the Win7 HD.
Both HDs were MBR formatted and include several partitions. Both OS-fully updated (up to 3 days ago).
Two days  ago the Win7 HD (which also includes the Arch separate /var and swap partitions) sent a SMART Alert it's about to fail.
Thus I've installed a new, larger (3TB) replacement drive.
To overcome MDSOS/MBR limitations, I've partitioned the new drive using GPT (GUID) and prepared a new 2M BIOS GRUB (first) partition per the Wiki's recommendation.
Using live clonezilla, I managed to clone the Windows (C),  and var partitions (although I've lost some win data which was on a separate partition).
Now I plan to chroot into Arch and reinstall GRUB on the new drive (and edit fstab to reflect UUID changes).
As I have no GPT experience, I would appreciate answers to the following questions:
1. Have I forgotten anything?
2. Should I convert also my Linux HD (the one that did NOT fail) to GPT or can I leave it MBR?
3. My former (failed) Win partition was boot flagged. Do I need to boot flag the BIOS GRUB or the (new) Windows partition (both on the "new" drive)?
4. On the new drive, I've creaed a 2.6TB NTFS partition (photo storage, replacing a former 1.2 TB one). Will Win 7 recognize it?
Thanks!

You can try to boot from the BIOS into an UEFI environment, then continue to Windows:
http://www.rodsbooks.com/bios2uefi/index.html
As far as I know, you'll have to reinstall windows from scratch.
Edit: Since you still have an MBr disk, it would be easier to move linux to the new disk and install windows on your mbr disk. Win7 on MBR should have no problems to recognize a GPT disk after booting.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble installing on SSD with GPT partitioning

    Hi there!
I'm trying to install Arch on my brandnew SSD. As per the wiki, I've set the SSD up to use GPT partitioning. I've created a first 1MB partition of type BIOS boot partition, and in the mobo's BIOS I've set the SATA controllers to AHCI mode. I've manually created an ext4 filesystem on the 2nd partition before running arch's installer. In the installer, I chose not to install a boot loader, cause this is said to install GRUB, while GPT partitioning requires GRUB2. So, after installation, I've chrooted into the installation, cause there doesn't seem to be any other way to get GRUB2 installed. I've pacman -Sy'd grub2 and left the chroot. I've tried to run
    grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
    , but got
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take some time.
The file /mnt/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly
What's the matter? How am I supposed to get a working boot loader onto my new SSD?
    Best wishes,

Check whether grub-install belongs to grub package or grub2 package. Try to install these updated grub2 packages from here
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for x86_64
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for i686
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - any arch
and then follow the post_install instructions from grub2-bios package.
You might have to 'bind' mount /dev into your <chroot>/dev though or install the above packages and install grub2 from outside the chroot.

  • Lenovo W520 BIOS defect: not booting GPT partitioned Harddrive w/o UEFI

    Hi,
again...the W520 BIOS seems to have a bug. I've tested it via several Notebooks and PC's and it's the ONLY one NOT starting. I'm using a GPT-partitioned Harddrive WITHOUT UEFI (which is absoluetly legal). The BIOS seems to check the boot flags and wont go furher after boot-select screen showing all present connected drivers. Other drivers (not GPT-partitioned) work fine on W520. The main questions here are: WHY IS THE BIOS CHECKING HARD-DRIVE-BOOT FLAGS??? and WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE FIXED ON W520-BIOS? I need my PC for work, I try to earn money here..

You have to write a boot entry into the EFI bootloader: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p1090040

    Procedure
On a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit BIOS laptop, I used Disk Management snapin to initialize the virgin 4TB disc to GPT. In Properties, it said it was a GPT disc. I then created a  1.0 TB partition with Quick Format unchecked (equivalent to DISKPART > clean)
so it would check for bad sectors.
I placed the 4TB disc into the ASUS Maximus VII Formula computer.
I made sure the UEFI BIOS was set to only use UEFI mode.
I booted into the Window 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 dvd.
During boot, ASUS screen said it was in UEFI mode.
    Windows installer loaded properly.
On the Windows screen for selecting which partition to install the OS to, I selected the 1.0 TB partition. The following error occurred:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Since the ASUS boot screen said I was in UEFI mode, why does it not let me install Windows to my 1 TB GPT partition?
I then deleted the 1.0 TB partition.
The partition was deleted leaving unallocated space.
I used NEW link to create a partition.
NEW did not work, it just left the unallocated space and did not create a partition.
Since the ASUS boot screen said I was in UEFI mode, why does it not create a GPT partition?
From the ASUS driver downloads page, I also tried loading the
"Intel_RAID_Win7-8-8-1_V13101058" 64-bit drivers during the installation process with no success.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
How about your problem now? Based on my knowledge, Windows 7 X64 system is support GPT disk, but Windows 7 X32 system not. According to your description, your disk should be already GPT, this problem probably caused by Windows installation disk problem or
    motherboard UEFI boot settings mistake.
Therefore, please check these two points for test. If problem persists, in my opinion, it would be better to contact ASUS suppoort for further assistance with this problem.

  • Install windows 8.1 on gpt on a bios system

Is it possible to install windows 8.1 on a gpt formatted partition on a BIOS or non-EFI system? Where can I locate descriptions for that?

    Hi,
Please know that  Windows 8.1 can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems.
So, the answer of your question is No.
Know more information about GPT, you can refer to following link:

  • Windows Server 2008 r2 install error gpt partition style

Good morning I am trying to install Window Server 2008 r2 (trail) on my Dell inspiron 15 and also keep Windows 8 when I set up a partition of 50G and go thru the install it tells me The selected Disk is of the GPT partition style.  How do I fix this
    issue.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi,
Since we are still discussing the same problem, so I merged them.
I want to confirm some information. Is your computer boot in BIOS mode or UEFI mode? Open computer management->Disk management->Properties->Volumes.
Is your current partition type GPT or MBR?
    For now,
starting with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, all versions of Windows Server can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions
on Itanium-based systems. For windows 7, windows VISTA and window server 2008, Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems.
So, the solution is either to change the boot mode or convert your disk. Remind, if you want to convert your disk, data on it should be cleared.
    Hope this helps.

  • "the selected disk is of the gpt partition style" upon installation

I am writing this from my phone as I am stuck in the win7 installation. I deleted the partition carrying the amazing win 8.1 and when I thought I'll just chop it up and install win7, it says it has other plans. what do I need to do to let me install win7?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

When installing newer versions of windows it is impotant to understand that there are two main formats for harddrives and there are also two forms of booting.
    UEFI Booting:
Newer computers come with what is known as a uefi booting interface. This allows for additional features such as secure boot as well as HP UEFI support environment which allows you to test various hardwares components without booting into an operating system.
UEFI operating systems use the GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk format which allows for more partitions as well as larger harddrive capacity.
    BIOS Booting:
Older computers have the BIOS which contans the basic settings as well as the time and date of the onboard system clock. Features such as virtualization or CPU over-clocking (as available on selected hardware) are able to be turned on and off in the BIOS. Most of the features of the BIOS have now been replicated in the newer UEFI boot.
BIOS based operating systems use the Master Boot Record (MBR) disk format which allows support for legacy operationg systems.
    What does this mean:
In order to downgrade your unit from windows 8.1 to windows 7 you can either
Format the Disk to the MBR format.  (Make sure to backup your data before you do this)
Boot your windows 7 installation media in UEFI mode (Ensure your UEFI boot mode is set to UEFI Hybrid for maximum compatibility)
Diskpart selects the physical disk rather than the partitions so when you convert between MBR and GPT (and vice-versa) you will lose the recovery partition. Provided you have HP/Windows recovery media you shouldn't experience too much difficulty with recovering your computer.
Hope this has assisted you and best of luck with your Re-Installation

  • Can't install windows 8 on gpt partition

Hi, my laptop came pre-installed with windows 8.1 and it did't allow Fifa13 to run, then I deleted the partition and tried to install windows 7 ultimate because it allows Fifa 13 to run. When installing windows 8.1 it displays "windows
cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Now my laptop is not starting at all. Please help me as I really need to use my pc.
    Thank you.
    Joseph Shobede

The question is a bit ambiguos. Kindly confirm do you see the error message while installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?
If you're instaling Windows 7 and seeing the error, you need to perform the following:
Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in Legacy BIOS mode (or non-UEFI). For more info, see Boot
to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
From inside Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window.
    Open the diskpart tool:
    diskpart
    Identify the drive to reformat:
    list disk
Select the drive, and reformat it:
    select disk <disk number>
    clean
    convert mbr
    exit
    Close the command prompt window.
    Continue the Windows Setup installation.
When choosing an installation type, select Custom. The drive will appear as a single area of unallocated space.
Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows begins the installation.

  • No Booting of Windows 8.1 After GPT Partition Resizing with Easeus Partition Master 3.0

    Hi there,
I have a Sony Notebook SVS13A3Z9ES with preinstalled Windows 8 which I updated to Windows 8.1. The notebook has a
250GB SSD which had the following GPT partitions
Partition 1: SONYSYS - 260MB (Sony Vaio tools, type OEM)
Partition 2: Windows RE - 1,4 GB (Type OEM)
Partition 3: EFI System Partition - 260 MB (type System)
Partition 4: MSR 128 MB  (type reserved)
Partition 5: About 240 GB - (incl. Windows, Type Prime)
Partition 6: Windows Recovery 350 MB (type OEM)
Partition 7: Recovery: 28 GB - OEM -> I created instead a Recovery USB stick and have now another prime partition
I then shrinked the Windows partition to 101GB with the Easeus Partition Master 3.0 to create another partition dedicated for data only. I didn't use the Windows built-in partition tool because I still wanted to shift the part.6,
being able to only extend part.7 for the final data partition. After I activated the shrinking via the Easeus I had to restart the notebook. I immediately came obviously to the Windows RE environment :
    - asking me for selecting language
    - afterwards I was brought to the Option Menue
    * Continue Booting -> led me back to the language selection
    * Turn-of PC and
    * Trouble Shooting ->
    Proceeding with Troubleshooting
    * Recovery and Maintenance -> tried to start VAIO Care but couldn't access it -> back to Option Menu
    * Refresh PC -> led to the message
“The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.”
It seems that the C: drive was locked after shrinkingthe partition with Easeus.
    * Advanced Options ->
    Proceeding with Advanced Options:
    * Automatic Repair -> couldn't be executed, log file on C:. With cmd the C:\>  drive can be initialized but Windows folder is not found (probably locked or hidden)
    * Recovery Point Recovery -> no recovery points were detected -> back to Troubleshooting
    * System Image Recovery -> no image points were detected -> back to Troubleshooting
    * UEFI Firmware Settings -> led to the Vaio Care RescueMode screen which can be seen here
    http://community.sony.com/t5/VAIO-Upgrade-Backup-Recovery/How-can-I-enter-bios-on-my-vaio-I-want-to-boot-from-the-cd-drive/td-p/60063
e.g. starting Windows from there led to WinRE again
    * cmd window ->
Finally we have the cmd Window. Here are several postings in the internet with potential solutions but no one helped me so far. Example postings:
    http://superuser.com/questions/460762/how-can-i-repair-the-windows-8-efi-bootloader
    http://www.qliktips.com/2012/11/fix-windows-8-boot-issue.html
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/rebuild-bcd-store-windows.htm
    http://www.winhelp.us/repair-your-computer-in-windows-8.html
    I tried so far:
    - chkdsk -> executed, no problems
    - Bootrec /fixmbr -> executed
    - Bootrec /fixboot -> executed
    - Bootrec /rebuildbcd, result:
    Successfully scanned Windows installations.
    Total identified Windows installations: 0
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart brought me directly to language selection and Windows RE back again.
BCDBoot c:\Windows -> executed successfully but restart
    back to WinRE
Then I assigned a letter to the EFI partition using diskpart v6.2.9200 and replaced bcd file with
    1. method: BCDBoot c:\Windows /s z: /f ALL   (z: letter of EFI partition) ->
executed successfully but restart back to WinRE
    2. method: Bootrec /rebuildbcd -> executed successfully but restart back to WinRE
I had the recovery USB stick inserted but it was never used so far.
Do you still have other solution ideas restore the booting or an approach how to unlock the GPT c: drive with Windows again ? I would appreciate that very much.

    Hi,
According to your description, the system was damaged by the partition tool.
Since you upgraded to Windows 8.1,you cannot use Windows 8 recovery media to repair the system.
If you have some important data in the SSD,I suggest that you move the ssd to other computer, and backup the data.
As you said, you had the recovery USB stick inserted but it was never used so far.
For this issue, please change your BOIS setting for USB.
I suggest you use your recovery USB stick to reinstall your system.

  • Solaris 11.2 x86 installation problem on GPT partitioned SSD

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 pre-installed on it. I want to install Solaris 11.2 as dual-boot together with the pre-installed windows 8.1.
The computer has a 128 GB SSD which is GPT partitioned. The SSD has 5 GPT partitions which are in use. I used a partition manager in Windows to shrink the size of the 5th partition (the windows system partition) so that i now have about 31 GB of unpartitioned, unused space after the 5 used partitions where i want to install Solaris into.
For installation, I downloaded the Solaris text installer ISO and burned it onto a CD-R. Now, whenever the installation menu shows me the GPT partitions of my SSD and i choose "Use a GPT partition of the disk" it always goes back to the first menu screen where it says "Welcome to the Oracle Solaris installtion menu".
Also, the installation menu shows the 5 used GPT partitions correctly, but then it shows me not one, but two partitions as "unused" with a size of 0.0 MB.
    What am i doing wrong?

If you have support, then you will be better served by opening a support case.
Assuming you don't, or you would have gone there already... There may well be bugs with supporting multiple OS's under GPT partitions.  I have no idea how much testing we did for such cases, and to be totally honest we put little effort into dual-booting systems these days, as using VM's in VIrtualBox or other VM managers is a better answer for 90i+% of people.
That said, posting the output from prtvtoc for the disk would give someone a chance to see if there's an obvious bug.
