[SOLVED] Trouble installing on SSD with GPT partitioning

Hi there!
I'm trying to install Arch on my brandnew SSD. As per the wiki, I've set the SSD up to use GPT partitioning. I've created a first 1MB partition of type BIOS boot partition, and in the mobo's BIOS I've set the SATA controllers to AHCI mode. I've manually created an ext4 filesystem on the 2nd partition before running arch's installer. In the installer, I chose not to install a boot loader, cause this is said to install GRUB, while GPT partitioning requires GRUB2. So, after installation, I've chrooted into the installation, cause there doesn't seem to be any other way to get GRUB2 installed. I've pacman -Sy'd grub2 and left the chroot. I've tried to run
grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
, but got
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take some time.
The file /mnt/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly
What's the matter? How am I supposed to get a working boot loader onto my new SSD?
Best wishes,
Rufus

Check whether grub-install belongs to grub package or grub2 package. Try to install these updated grub2 packages from here
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for x86_64
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - for i686
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9710721/skodabe … pkg.tar.xz - any arch
and then follow the post_install instructions from grub2-bios package.
You might have to 'bind' mount /dev into your <chroot>/dev though or install the above packages and install grub2 from outside the chroot.

  • SSD wear levelling with GPT partitioning

does GPT help with SSD wear levelling? Is data written randomly to the physical drive, while the GPT table keeps track of which is what? I ask because it is recommended to have a single partition on an SSD for wear levelling. However, I would like to partition it to multi-boot several distros. It seems that GPT behaves like LVM because when I resize a gpt partition, it is done instantly (very quickly), as if data is not being physically re-allocated. On the other hand, it could be because my SSD is almost empty--very few personal files and the rest is just linux. So, this is why I asked the question. The other advantage of partitioning is that the dd command will run much faster and produce smaller image files, which allows me to do incremental backups.
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thanks

Not exactly what I meant. Some online discussions suggest that partitioning will confine disk read/write activities to a certain region of the SSD, thus wearing it out quickly. On the other hand, other discussions suggest that wear levelling protection happens at lower level by the SSD controller which is indifferent to partitioning--as far as it is concerned, partitioning is just data organization at the OS level. So, you can partition as much as you want and the wear levelling protection will still evenly distribute writes across the entire SSD, regardless of the partitions boundaries.
When I used to resize partitions on my HDD with MBR, it took a very long time because data had to be re-arranged. However, when I resize partitions on the SSD with GPT, it happens instantly as if the data are never re-arranged--only the partition table is modified.
Is this due to using GPT or is it because SSD wear levelling protection does not care about partitioning, be it MBR or GPT?
Ultimately, I want to make sure that creating 10 partitions, and using one of the partitions frequently with my main distro, is not going to wear out the SSD prematurely.

  • Having trouble installing windows vista with snow leopard

I replaced my hard drive with a 3tb Seagate  and partitioned the hard drive and installed Snow leopard and then partitioned the hard drive with bootcamp and went to install windows vista and got the error message that windows vista cannot be installed because of the gpt partition.   Help.

sounds like you have a 2nd hard drive.
Also, you may run into 3TB issue with MBR. The boot partiton volume has to reside totally below 2.2TB so you would need to leave .8TB free. I think.
have an SSD and hard drive, both? during install you can't have another drive with GPT so you can't have OS X or GUID data drive present. During install.

  • Can't install windows 8 on gpt partition

Hi, my laptop came pre-installed with windows 8.1 and it did't allow Fifa13 to run, then I deleted the partition and tried to install windows 7 ultimate because it allows Fifa 13 to run. When installing windows 8.1 it displays "windows
cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
Now my laptop is not starting at all. Please help me as I really need to use my pc.
    Thank you.
    Joseph Shobede

The question is a bit ambiguos. Kindly confirm do you see the error message while installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?
If you're instaling Windows 7 and seeing the error, you need to perform the following:
Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key.
Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in Legacy BIOS mode (or non-UEFI). For more info, see Boot
to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.
From inside Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window.
    Open the diskpart tool:
    diskpart
    Identify the drive to reformat:
    list disk
Select the drive, and reformat it:
    select disk <disk number>
    clean
    convert mbr
    exit
    Close the command prompt window.
    Continue the Windows Setup installation.
When choosing an installation type, select Custom. The drive will appear as a single area of unallocated space.
Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows begins the installation.

And when i try above tests in my mac mini server it does them all normally. It can install everything in normal mode windos 7 or 8 what ever it doesn't care. . Yes, your fonts are locked. This is a known issue with different older versions of Adobe products if they are mixed. You need to take ownership and set their permissions to full access. There is some article on it in the knowledge base, but you might just as well do a web search on a more generic level about such procedures. An abbreviated summary of how to is contained in this article on my page (Security section).

  • [solved] Best Practice for SSDs with crypto on it regarding TRIM

    Hi,
I was doing some research on this matter but did not find too much information on that that's more useful than confusing.
The setup is the following: I have an SSD (Crucial, Marvell-Controller) with two partitions: a small one for /boot and a bigger one for the rest, which is a LUKS-Container. I left some unpartitioned space at the end of the SSD. I'd like to *not* enable TRIM on the LUKS-device for security purposes.
    I was wondering now:
I read that TRIM does reduce the write amplification of garbage collection. But shouldn't the garbage collection do not write at all, but just erase cells with no information on it?
If TRIM helps keeping up performance: do I need to explicitly trim the unpartitioned space? Or does this area behave like the spare area?
If TRIM of the unpartitioned space is necessary: what's the most elegant way to do so?
If someone could shed a little light on this matter, that would help a lot and would be greatly appreciated.
Last edited by Ovion (2015-03-09 19:20:13)

I have the same setup. Crucial SSD, LUKS, TRIM (cron.weekly fstrim). A full hexdump (minus gigabytes of random data) looks like this: https://bpaste.net/raw/505157 (tell me about it)
There is no issue with security. At least, none I care about. So the attacker can see how much free space there is [and where]. The where part is important since lots of small files give a different picture [lots of small free spaces in between] than a single very large file would [no free space in between], assuming there is no fragmentation worth mentioning [which Linux filesystems are usually good at]. So an attacker could probably make some guesses about your amount of data and file sizes. On the other hand I don't see how that's important, in ecryptfs you get this kind of info for free, and I have all sorts of files in all sorts of sizes either way, so it's not a big secret.
The question is, when all it takes to crack your encryption setup is a keylogger or a $5 encryption wrench, does it really matter?
Don't use TRIM on your SSD if you don't want to (there are lots of reasons not to TRIM... like better data recovery chances if you delete something by accident). But don't fool yourself thinking it's somehow really important for your security...
As for unpartitioned space, if it ever was in use before, you need to trim it once. Create a partition on it, then blkdiscard the partition, then delete the partition. That way it's good until it's "in use" again because you dd all over it or had it resynced in a RAID.
Apart from that, TRIM does all the things you said (reduce write amplification, performance, etc. etc.) but it's not like the SSD can't take it if you're not writing 24/7 because it's a database server burning up or something.

According to the accompanying Apple information the answer is no. However Apple do say if you also want to play other older QuickTime movie files then you will need QuickTime.
The conclusion is that if your only using music, or your only using movies purchased via the iTunes Store then it seems you no longer need QuickTime installed in Windows with iTunes 10.5.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to load GRUB on MacBook PRO with GPT partition

    Hi,
I have made an install of Arch on my MacBook Pro. I have made the installation of Arch to work before but I decided to make a clean install since I changed WM. I have written down my instructions thoroughly and followed them like a slave. It worked before but now it just decided not to work. When I was starting my Mac before I ended up at the GRUB menu being able to chose to load Arch. If I pressed the alt button I was able to load OS X. But after the reinstall the computer did not load GRUB.
I have reinstalled OS X again just to make sure everything is clean, especially the boot partition.
    During the installation I mounted the partitions like so (sda4 = boot, sda5 = root, sda6=swap, sda7=home)
    # mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
    # mkdir /mnt/boot
    # mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/boot
    # mkdir /mnt/home
    # mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/home
    # mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
After installing base and base-devel and modifying the system I did the following:
    # pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
    # modprobe dm-mod
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck --debug
    # cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
NB! I executed these commands with /dev/sda1 still mounted on /boot/efi in the chrooted environment. This put the arch_grub bootloader-id under /boot/efi/EFI on /dev/sda1. I made sure to remove the old /boot/efi/EFI/arch_grub before I executed this command. This way is a little bit different from the Wiki but as I said before, /dev/sda1 was already mounted on /mnt/boot/efi when I followed these instructions.
Without installing the os-prober (I don't want to have OS X in grub) I then executed
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
exited, unmounted and rebooted. After the reinstall, suddenly the computer does not load grub? Instead I just end up booting into OS X.
Does anyone have any clue on what to do here? I have tried to reinstall a couple of times without success.

    Hi,
I have found a solution to the problem. When you are booting from the cd if you look carefully you will see that the system is missing firmware for module aic94xx and bfa. This error message also pops up when you are creating the initial ram disk environment with:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
To make it work I did as followed:
    1. I have rEFInd installed
    2. I booted from the disk and mounted /dev/sda1 somewhere and made sure to remove the old ../EFI/arch_grub that was lying there
    3. I continued with a normal install making sure NOT to mount /dev/sda1 on /mnt/boot/efi before generating the fstab
    4. I chrooted into /mnt and followed the instructions up to setting up the network (in my case # systemctl enable [email protected])
    5. Before I created the initial ram disk environment I installed aic94xx and bfa from the AUR as root (maybe not 100% correct)
    5.a https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/aic94xx-firmware/
    5.b https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/bfa-firmware/
    6. I then ran the code # mkinitcpio -p linux, this time without the error messages I had gotten before
    7. I set the root password and continued with these instructions:
    7.a https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … Bootloader
    8. When I installed grub the system said that it could not find a boot manager but I continued with the instructions
When I rebooted the computer everything went fine, I booted into rEFInd followed by grub. Can anyone with the same problem please follow these instructions and report back. It is good to see anyone else succeed before I report this thread as SOLVED. If you have any questions I will try to help.

  • Windows 7 install on ssd with primary disk damaged

Hi everyone, to start sorry for my english, it's the best i can do...
I'm having a troubleduring the installation of windows with boot camp.
I have an imac 27 late 2009 with the 1 tb 3.5 internal disk that doesn't work. I have to replace it (using the apple free program of replacement) in a short time but for now apple have few disks so i have to wait to the replace.
To be able to use my imac i decided to remove the dvd super drive and put an ssd in it. I installed on the ssd lion without problems and it works well (os x recognize the damaged 3.5 disk and sees is as damaged and not working).
So i started to installa windows 7 using an usb key and the boot camp utility. I split the disk in 2 partitions, half for os x (60 gb) and half for windows. At the end the imac rebooted but instead to start the windows installation procedure there was an alternate image of the apple, of a folder with a question mark and a prohibition signal. So to see if the boot mode was right i shut down the mac, i removed the usb key and turned it on, it asks me to insert a boot device, so it tries correctly to start windows.
So i tried to do it again with a dvd external drive, same result. When the 1 internal tb hdd was working i did the same procedure and everything was working... Could it be the damaged disk the problem? Maybe windows tries to write something directly to the first disk and it fails? is there a way to completely disable by default the internal disk?

  • Windows 7 install on Imac with 3rd partition

Hi there, I've been trying to install windows 7 on an Imac with a 3rd partition to store my files so they can be accessed on both the mac and pc install. I use the standard procedure for installing windows through bootcamp, which works fine, then when I try to generate the 3rd partition the windows install is not recognised by the computer. I have tried to generate the 3rd partition through the mac disc utility, the mac disc utility when used from the install disc and through the disc managment utility in windows 7 - none of which worked.
I found a post which gives a solution for this problem when installing windows xp - adjust the boot.ini file - but as far as I know the boot.ini file does not exist on windows 7.
Has anyone had the same problem and found a solution, or is there maybe a piece of software that fixes this issue?
