Guitar feedback distortion

After updating to the newest GarageBand on my iPad 3, suddenly when I try to use a distortion amp for my guitar with iRig I get insane feedback noise. It only happens with amp models in crunchy , distorted, or processed. My guitar and iRig work fine with amplitude, but not GarageBand. So now it's unusable.

Sounds like there is bleed. Try turning your headphones down a bit and see if the feedback goes away.

  • Electric Guitar Feedback

Ok... i dont know what is going on...
I have a Stratocaster Standard going into an Apogee Duet...
I normally try to keep the input levels mid level with an acoustic but for some reason when I try to record an electric guitar into Logic's Guitar Simulation Plug-Ins I get feedback on high distortion settings... How the heck am I getting computer simulated feedback with no real amp to point my guitar at?
I've done a little tweaking to some of the high distortion tone settings and whenever I lower the amps master volume feedback goes away or if i lower the microphone simulation on the amp the feedback goes away. But since these are logic's presets... aren't they pre-made settings to use with an electric guitar?? Yet I'm getting horrible feedback with these "presets"
    Any ideas?

    hey.
im using the exact same setup as you also but running the output to a fender blues deluxe 410.
i have the same issues when using the higher gain amps. i think the thing is that feedback may be unavoidable, but i am going to look into it a bit more.
also, eventhough we are using a virtual amp, if the output is to a speaker with high power, the emf from the speaker will find its way back into your pickups so it is really the same as a real guitar setup.

  • Guitar feedback

Im getting extreme feedback when i open an electric guitar track. Somehow a microphone is on at a high volume and feeding back. I cant find it anywhere.

it may not be an open mic, some of the amp sims just are very noisy and generate feedback.
try turning down the volume of your computer and then tweaking the amp's setting. also, if you try using headphones and still hear feedback, you know it's not an open mic.
otoh, if the internal mic is selected as the input source, that would do it:

  • Feedback distortions

I am trying to import some sound files directly from my Mini Disk recorder using 22050 16bit mono and although the playback sounds OK from the speaker when I open the recording to edit, there is a pulsing feedback, almost an echo and a clicking sound. When I use the same settings in Audition 2 I get a perfect playback. If I use 44100 16 bit mono in Soundbooth then the recording and playback are OK, but the file is bigger than I want.
    Any suggestions or help, please?

Yeah, I second chaining different Plug-Ins. Also try using Bus Sends and Aux tracks to blend certain amounts of effects. With this, try mixing 3 or more Guitar Amps on Aux Tracks with different settings on each, or slightly different from each one, and pan them to something you like. I have found this to be extremely awesome. I got the idea after reading how they engineered 10,000 Days by Tool and found Adam Jones uses 3 cabinets with an SM57, 421, and another mic to complement the 57 and 421, and they put 3 mics on the cabinets, so the guitar sound was made of 9 tracks and were never EQ'ed because they could use those tracks as EQ and tweak it the way they wanted.

  • Learn to Play Guitar has distortion

Basic lesson #7 (major barre chords) has the same distortion effect as lesson #6 (power chords) where it makes sense. In lesson #7 the distortion makes it really difficult to hear whether all strings ring correctly. Is there a way to change the effects in the lessons?
I've just updated to GB 10 (10.0.1 to be exact) before starting so I don't know whether this has changed with the update.

Thank you very much. Do we need to buy the new version or we get the upgrade for free.

  • Acoustic/Electric Guitar and Feedback

I've been trying to get some useable recordings from my Taylor 414CE and I can't get it to work...
I plug straight into my MBPro via a 1/8" plug adapter but get a TON of feedback if I try and monitor off the MBPro's speakers. Is this because it is an acoustic/electric? I can turn the monitor off and record, but the quality still sounds really bad. Any suggestions?
Or do I really need some sort of USB/Midi interface like M-Audio's Fast Track or Black Box? I'm a total recording newbie, so I apologize if this particular horse has already been beaten to death.
    Thanks.

plug in some headphones and monitor that way. Acoustic guitars feedback very easily. I think you are probably just too close to the speakers with your guitar. If you really don't like headphones, try facing away from the computer and maybe get a longer instrument cable so you can get a bit further away. You can always chop off the extra bits after you record if you aren't right there to hit stop.

  • Basic recording/feedback question

I'm recording basic vocals against accompaniment tracks using an APOGEE ONE and Audio-Technica 40 series AT8449 condenser mic. I use only headphones, no external speakers.
If I record with "monitoring" on I constantly battle feedback/distortion, especially on songs with a wide dynamic range. When the feedback protection kicks in the message indicates that I'm getting feedback through my external speakers (which I don't have), I can minimize the problem by turning "monitoring" off but I lose the reference vocal. I know I must be overlooking something very simple. Any help is appreciated.

    hi all,Hi Neerav
I have very basic clone database question
If i create database A and clone database B using A...
I want to know that any operation done on A will be automatically done on Cloned database B.Oops....Now you're asking about rocket science. Sorry, I don't know.
    I know about some basics:
Streams or Replication--> Which can give you data on B in read-write mode.
DR--> For safeguarding your database and B will work as DR solution.
Hope u understandNo, please make us understand.

  • How to make a "wah" lead guitar sound less shrill?

Hi all, so I have this song with the following, all on seperate tracks: Drums, Bass, Distorted Rhythm Electric Guitar, and Distorted Lead Electric on a Crybaby Wah Pedal.
I'm happy with everything except the Lead Guitar track. The wah makes it sound shrill, ear-splittingly so. I recorded by sticking a mic in front of the guitar amp (me using headphones).
I've fiddled with a it a bit, and but can't really find a way to "warm up" the sound of that lead guitar.
I'll attach an mp3 if anyone wants to hear it.
    Any suggestions?

    Since I'm bored...
Here are some graphs just to give you an idea of how crazy some guitar pedals are and how much they filter the audio....
The first one (MT-2 AC (Un-modified - Full gain).jpg) is a graph of an unmodified pedal. Notice the peaks and how drastic it changes the sound...
The second one (MT-2 (Modified - Full gain).jpg) is a graph of a modified pedal that eliminates the three fixed boost circuits but allows the 3 tone controls to still function...
The modified pedal does less to the audio and allows the person (or persons) mixing the sound to control where those peaks will be and how much gain there will be...
    Erg... Have to go now...

  • LOOPS PLAYBACK CLIPPING IN TIMELINE

Using Jam pack 'Symphony" loops I have noticed that some of the loops are corrupt AFTER placing them into the timeline. When I preview the loop its fine until I drop it into the timeline then clipping and mumbled feedback distorts the loop slightly. Is there something that can be done to rid of this annoying problem? I record to an external hard drive so that I have enough memory. Will reloading GB '08 or the Symphoy jam pack help with correcting the playback distortion of the track? FYI Im not using any strange reverb effects for it to sound like this.

  • How many effects I can use on one instrument?

After loading five effects for my guitar (reverbs, distortions, etc.) I can't add any more for one instrument in mixer panel. Is there a way to add some more?

    Hi Slabadaba
This is very strange! I thought 5 might be the maximum - and you say you don't have any more insert slots appearing after you have inserted 5 dsp plug ins on a track....
And now, I downloaded this pdf: Type the following into your web browser:
    images.apple.com/logicexpress/pdf/LogicExpress7_PO20060717.pdf
Go to page 6 and the first paragraph is as follows:
"The Track Mixer in Logic Express 7 controls a maximum of 255 audio tracks, 64 audio
instrument tracks, and a nearly unlimited number of MIDI tracks. Each audio and
software instrument track can display and use up to 15 insert plug-ins and 8 effect
bus sends. Logic Express offers 42 e∂ ect plug-ins and supports additional Audio Units
(AU) format plug-ins. It also features a core collection of 26 software instruments. As
with the effects, additional AU instrument plug-ins are supported. "
So - it would appear that you can have a maximum of 15 plugins inserted onto one track.
Have you noticed that after inserting the fourth plug in or 5th that another insert slot appears?
Also, can you confirm what version of logic express you are using.
    Hope that helps somewhat!

  • Basic 2-part question from a guitarist...

I've been using GB for 2 years, and just upgraded by loading Logic Studio 9:
Have been able to "dial up" the amp (50's R&B) and guitar selection: (Distorted Stratocaster).
Have used the "action" to get some sound from the amp, but using the same procedure, I get ZERO sound from the Strat. file, so I have no idea how it is "supposed" to sound.(?)
QUESTIONS: Why does the volume automatically drop to zero between certain amp selections?
Why am I still unable to get any volume at all when I try to play Distorted Telecaster?
    Thanks, ahead of time.

I can't answer all of your questions, but I think you may be confused about guitar related presets in Logic. There are effects presets which allow you to plug your guitar into an interface and play through those effects, and there are software instrument presets which can be played "in the box" using a MIDI keyboard or by somehow entering MIDI data into Logic. "Distorted Stratocaster" is a software instrument preset, not an effects preset. So if you're trying to play a real guitar through that, it just won't work.

  • Volume levels fluctuate when recording

Right, I was just recording something using my Macbook and its built in mic.
When I play the file back, the volume level fluctuates wildly. It will cut in certain spots, almost sounding like it's being sent through a filter of some sort, and then come back at full volume, and then get soft again etc.
I thought that it was because it was clipping, but I re-recorded it several times at different volume levels and it did the same thing. Any ideas?
It is a guitar with distortion, if that matters.

did u check your volume adjustment in the little nix box it can be set to up lower the volume [ look 4 the little triangle an click to open track volume an level it out just trying something

  • Bilingual Video Conference

We are attempting to architect the following - bilingual video conference - 2 C60 (English, French), TMS, VCS-E/C, MCU 5300.
English video conference with external participants (mic input from English translation)
French video conference with external participants (mic input from French translation)
Camera input switched to bith C60 codecs
All participants to see each other
Participants to speak and hear in the language of their choice (depending upon codec connected to - English or French)
    Looking for proven method

    Hello
The "room" with the dual codecs and single camera - Will there be active participants in that room?
What will the camera be viewing? Basically what type of venue?
Will French and English speakers be in that same room?
How many rooms will need to see all participants? Will French far-end participants need to see English far-end participants?
How many sites will have both English and French Speakers?
I have done similar multi-language (always 3-5) many times but always with separate audio channels per language using devices purpose made for multilingual multisite conferences and audio encoders. VTC session is conducted as normal and the audio is translated (by translators in soundproof booths) and users would subscribe to the language of their choice using the IR headsets. Participants would speak whatever language they want into the mics and others would hear the speaker live on room speakers and in the subscribed language on their headsets. the multi channel (different languages) audio to and from external sites was handled by encoders and decoders -
For your solution based on what you describe you will need to send out only "one video" channel and really only one audio channel out per codec. Since each channel will use a dedicated codec.
Each CODEC dials into a dedicated conference on the bridge - one for English and one for French. The far end participants will dial into the respective language conference. The far end will hear the language of the specific bridge. NOW STOP
This is where complexity starts and is more of a A/V Engineering issue than a Telepresence issue.
The Audio and Video from the far on the separate CODECs need to be integrated into the room without feedback distortion etc.. The video is pretty easy but the audio will be the most complex to work through.
    Required Components
    - DSP with mic mixer
    - Matrix Switch
I would use three or four displays then have one display for each near-end codec displaying the far-end(s) video (one per language). The third display will be for content and if 4th display is used it can be for content in second language or another site
The DSP with mic mixer to route all mics and the received far-end audio. teh DSP will mix the incoming audio and mix/minus the mics and program audio to prevent echo, feedback and other audio issues.
All the basic concepts and principles of this architecture is proven but I have never implemented it in exactly the way you have it. Working in the areas I was, with multiple languages it was easier to add audio channels than it was to add additional codecs
I'd love to hear how this comes out and help if needed

  • Odd stuff - recording delay - automatic channel Strip changes

Recently I upgraded my interface from a MOTU 828MKII, to a Metric Halo 2882. I also upgraded from Logic 8 to 9. The problem is, I did this in the middle of a project. This project was/is just a test of a whole new upgrade to my home studio including some preamps/mics/interface/acoustic treatment/etc. Up to this point I mainly recorded my own stuff (5yrs), no big deal. But I'm thinking of moving this into a part time gig. So I asked a some friends if they'd be interested in free recording as guinea pigs.
The first day (Saturday) we tracked drums into the MOTU on Logic 8, as my Metric Halo interface hadn't arrived yet. Everything went good. That Monday, my Metric Halo arrived. I switched out the MOTU, and had the 2882 up and running by Wednesday. Thursday, I installed Logic 9 and updated to 9.1. I had all weekend to work though some of the new stuff, and it all sounded good.
By Monday I had the guitar/singer come by to lay down the rhythm guitar. When we recorded it, with the same settings as in the previous session, although with Logic 8 and a Motu interface, the guitar was around 246 samples late. I adjusted the Recording Delay ahead 246 samples, and it made it slower. I adjusted back 246, still not right. So we called the session.
I've scoured forums, and the only info I can find is plugin latency, and I/O buffer settings. I never had any issue with the MOTU as far as recording delay goes. I had latency issues, but nothing that actually recorded. It was my understanding that, the I/O buffer only affects the monitoring latency, everything "goes to tape" correctly though. I've spent the last 4-5 days trying to figure this out. If I start a new project with the 2882, everything syncs up great, no delay at all. But if I try to add to any project that was started with the MOTU, and Logic 8, I get a recorded delay.
The frustrating part of this is, last night, I updated Logic to 9.1.1, and recorded a loopback click. It worked fine. No delay at all. I tested a bass through the same recording chain I used before, and it was perfect too. I'm not sure if this was a fix in the new update, or I have some other instability thing going on. Any Ideas there?
Also, after updating last night I had a weird problem with plugins that were disabled, suddenly re-engaging. It seemed as though when I would do any changes in the MIO Console, I would come back to Logic, and random plugins would be re-enabled. I'll check tonight if this is repeatable, but last night it was a bother. I also had a Focusrite LiquiMix running at the same time. Maybe this was causing a problem. It did seem to only affect the channel strips that the LiquidMix inserts were on.
    Thanks,
    Erik

Thanks very much; I'm still perplexed though. You're right, the "mono->stereo" plug-ins yield stereo effects for the guitar; but I'm referring to the pre-assembled "sets" of plug-ins that are accessed by clicking on the word "inserts" (above the various slots for plug-ins). When you click on this word, all sorts of effects-sets are offered: for drums, vocals, pianos, guitars, etc. I'm referring to one for "electric guitar" (under "distorted guitar") called "Angus on SG + MS 1959" (though this is true of the other effects in this same category for electric guitar). Here's why things don't make sense to me: 1) since this effects-set ("Angus...") works just fine if it's applied AFTER I've recorded the guitar dry, why should it NOT work when I'm recording with the effect? I.e., I don't need a special double guitar plug for my Firepod for the effect to work on the signal it HAS recorded; so why should the special double plug be necessary WHILE recording? Meanwhile, 2) given that this is a GUITAR effect (Angus Young playing his Gibson SG through a 1959 Marshall Stack), and guitars always have mono output, then how can it be that Logic, by design, should require users to buy a special stereo plug when using effect-sets specifically designed for guitar? .... That's why I'm perplexed. I do think your two suggestions will work; but it just seems impossible to me that Logic is actually designed to work in this way -- at least not on purpose. On the other hand, I'm a newbie, and I may be missing something that's obvious. Sure would appreciate hearing whether it seems to people that there's a problem with my set-up (or with Logic), or whether the physical stereo-plug solution is actually a well-known practice that I am simply not familiar with. Many thanks!
You have recorded only one chanel on a stereo track.
Use a second input on your firepod or use mono ->
stereo plugins on a mono track to hear them in stereo.

  • Help-- annoying feedback while using guitar distortion

    Hey guys,
I just got an M-Audio Fast Track guitar/mic interface for my macbook pro. I plugged in my guitar and tried to fiddle around with the stomp boxes. When I try to use any sort of distortion whatsoever, I get a loud, ringy feedback that sounds like it would if my guitar were next to an amp in real life. Why would it do this on a computer? I want to solve this so I can record some music. Thanks!!

Check your "gain" levels ... in addition the distortion effect levels too.
I use a Lightsnake USB cable directly for my guitar & bass tracks, routed through Garageband. It works killer, plus you can record a "clear" track, free of effects, and afterwards add the desired one.
I used Pro Tools LE 8.0 for a bit but my computer can't handle my electronic drums and processor heaver pro tools together. It worked the same though, had to adjust the "gain" from primary instrument and ensure the "effect software" was able to do its thing.
    I hope this helps.
