H264 and HD video camera questions

So I just got a miniDV HD video camera and was learning how to use imovie 06 HD. So much more confusing then 08. I got really spoiled with just clicking, dragging and deleting parts of clips I didnt want, this seems much more complicated.
Question is, once I finish a project, how do I use this H264 to compress the HD video? I didnt see an option for it when I clicked "Share" and then selected Quicktime. I just upgraded to QT 7.4.5 for Leopard. Any help would be great, thanks

Nevermind, just found the option. Is it supposed to take like 15 min to render a 30 second clip? Thats ridiculous.

  • Daisy chaining external hard drives and a video camera from a single firewire 800 port on my imac

I have only a single firewire 800 port on my imac and want to know if I can daisy chain two external hard drives and my video camera, please? If not is there another solution using USB 2?

Are the external HDs self powered or powered by the FW port?  If they are self powered there should not be a problem. If they are port powered they may put a strain on the port's power output but I'n not positive on that.

  • IMovie 8 and Flip Video Cameras

From reading previous posts, I see that iMovie 8 does not automatically convert video formats as did previous versions.
I am having difficulties importing Flip Video video files into iMovie 8. I am wondering if anyone has a simple answer to the question, if I have Quicktime Pro, what format should I save the Flip Video files in, so they will import into iMovie 8 (Flip Video video format: Advanced Profile MPEG4 AVI)
I've managed to do it once, but can't retrace my steps...To be argumentative, if iMovie 8's appeal is for a quick video for YouTube, Web, why did they make it so difficult to import video clips, my opinion, that should be the easy part!
Thanks for your help and suggestions

My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo the programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
    - No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
    - No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
    - Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.

  • New Air, New iLife and Consumer video cameras

Most consumer video cameras use Firewire... the new Air doesn't have this, but the new iLife (which includes iMovie) is one of the big features Apple are pushing with it.
Whats going on here then? How do they expect people to ingest their rushes??

most cameras within the last few years should support USB - firewire was more for DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO if i remember correctly. they're aging formats now and things rapidly moving to HD and those cams afaik should support USB - from consumer to professional
my sony ex3 supports both USB, Firewire & SD - firewire only for DVCPRO i think (don't really use that)
i'm in a similar boat though with audio as my entire studio is firewire based from audio converters to external DSP, etc...
just bought 11inch for on the road audio/video editing and may have to buy a USB audio capture device but YA - these are super mobile devices

  • A SD and HD video mix question.

So I’ve searched online and have found different suggestions, and I’m not sure which one would be better.  Here’s what I’m trying to do, I have SD footage that’s 4:3, 25FPS PAL and I have footage that’s 1080p, 24FPS NTSC.  I need to mix them both, so obviously upscaling my SD footage to 1080 would look horrible.  So I figured 720 would be better and I resize the 1080 footage instead.  Now I have used Instant HD to scale my SD footage up so it will have pillar boxing which I’m fine with since there’s no possible way (unless I’m wrong here) that I can see to make it 16:9 and have it look good. By the way I have Premiere Pro CS6 and After Effects CS6, so if there’s anything I can do better in After Effects instead of Premiere Pro regarding my situation here let me know.
Now my question is, what’s the best way of making my SD footage looking as good as possible that I can get it to be upscaled?  Is Instant HD the best route?  I’ve tried it but I want to know if it’s possible to get it to look even a tiny bit better if possible.  Are there specific settings I should be entering?  I know I’m not expecting true HD look to it but I’m just trying to get it to look as good as possible when upscaled.  Also if I use Instant HD to upscale it, should I set the field option to always deinterlace?  To be honest the footage doesn’t looked like it’s interlaced, I’m not seeing the interlace lines during any motion.
Now my other question is, mixing PAL and NTSC content.  What’s the best route for doing that?  Any pros and cons?
Now out of curiosity, here’s a youtube video I came across.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJxS-XXvUwo
Apparently it’s an SD footage blown up to 4k resolution while still looking good.  Apparently the creator used PFTrack and Nuke for this, as well as Lustre but that’s for color grading it I guess.  I’ve never used Nuke or have ever heard of PFTrack.  How would you go about doing something like this? Is it even possible to do it in Premiere or After Effects?  Should I be looking into Nuke and PFTrack to get a better result with upscaling my SD footage?  To be honest I can’t find much info about Nuke and upscaling so I’m really clueless about how this is done… That’s if this is even legit.

It looks like PFTrack was used for the frame rate conversion, and Nuke is the software that performed the actual scaling.  That software costs $1,600/$3,000 respectively.  I'm assuming that'd be impractical for this project, so InstantHD is probably the best it'll get.

  • IMove and Canon Video Cam

i just bought the new Canon Vixia HF200. it is Mac Compatible and i have imported the still photos from the flash drive. When i started to import the video into iMovie, all seemed well.
at one point, i wanted to start the import part over again because a few clips didn't import. iMovie stopped recognizing the cam. i have tried zapped pram, repaired permissions, trashed plists, updated all software. no go...iMovie still refuses to see the cam, it sees only my build in iSight.
i can still import photos with no problem...but iMovie just doesn't see the cam.
i am doing this on my MacBook Pro. Any ideas?

    Greetings, Gil!
Here's my initial ideas for your consideration.
I expect that you have already checked to see if anything from this link helps you:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
I see you have reset PRAM, but have you tried resetting SMC/PMU? That, and other troubleshooting tips related to your inbuilt iSight may merit a look at:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The other Apple Article I looked at about your problem is:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/10331.html
The thing that caught my eye there is that you might be experiencing a conflict with DVD Player (or some other app?). Try connecting the camera, quitting any extraneous apps like DVD Player that might open, and then launch iMovie.
If that does not help, you might restart your Mac and try again with NOTHING but the HF200 connected.
If the problem persists, and if the only problem you experience is with iMovie, you might reinstall iMovie to see if that cures your problem.
If everything fails, we might want to brainstorm this via iChat
and then post the fix here for benefit of others with a similar problem.
Will watch for your status update...

  • G5 Quad and dual video card question

I purchased the Quad with the 7800 GT..I originally had 2 monitors on the one card. In doing so you are splitting the Vram into 125 meg per monitor..I don't want that since my CGI demands require more screen redraw from my working monitor..so I purchased another card for my pallet monitor..the 6600LE but some (core image effect not sure) don't work..i.e...the ripple effect
is there something about the 6600 LE that doesn't allow all of apples desktop eyecandy to work?
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

That's interesting. The 6600 should support core image and everything else that it needs to. That's one of the cards Apple ships with the G5s. You have the 6600 in the eight lane slot right?
Perhaps it is something screwy with the way multiple video cards are handled?
If you want to try an experiment you could swap the 7800 and the 6600. Put the 6600 into the 16 lane slot and put the 7800 in the 8 lane slot. See if the 7800 then won't show the ripple effect.

  • How do I connect two video cameras to my computer have them both show up on the desktop at the same time so I can see and capture both images using a screen capture program?

    Hello,
I am a teacher and want to make some videos to post online for my class.  I would like to have it set up so that I have a powerpoint presentation going, a video camera pointing at a piece of paper I can write on and another video camera pointing at me.  How do I do this?  I have seen several solutions but they seem to be for switching between videos whereas I want both video images to be on at the same time.
Also, is there a screen capture program you would recommend?

Go to System Preferences - Sharing and change the computer name there. You can also, optionally, change the name of your hard drive to further clarify the origin of your backups. Click once on the "Macintosh HD" on your desktop, then click its name to allow you to edit it.

    Hello,
I will help you moving this thread into windows phone forum.
For you question, we can use DeviceInformaiton class to find all webcams and then get the front or back webcam.
     Code looks like the following.
    var devices = await Windows.Devices.Enumeration.DeviceInformation.FindAllAsync(Windows.Devices.Enumeration.DeviceClass.VideoCapture);
    Windows.Devices.Enumeration.DeviceInformation backCameraDeviceInformation =
    devices.FirstOrDefault(x => x.EnclosureLocation != null &&
    x.EnclosureLocation.Panel == Windows.Devices.Enumeration.Panel.Back);
You can see more about camera programming in this code sample. Get it from

  • How to synchronize colors with two different video cameras

I own Sony FX1 and HC9 video cameras. The color between the two video cameras can be pretty noticeable, and I tend to flip between the two cameras a lot during editing. Ideally I would get them to match up better before I start filming, but despite my attempts, I still can see a noticeable difference between them in post-production. I know I can use the color corrector filter to adjust the colors, but is there a more effective way to adjust the colors of the two video so they match better? I have used that eyedropper on the "visual" screen of the color corrector to adjust the white balance. Is there something similar where I could for example click the eyedropper on the blue of one video and it would change the blue of the video from the second camera to match?

You don't really have the controls for that in FCE. You can't fine tune the color with real precision for color matching in FCE. There is a match hue function with the eyedropper, but without separate shadows, mids, and highlight color controls there is only so much you can do.
