Had to erase my hard drive.

I got my first ever virus I left the house for about 6 hrs while my GFs brother was watching the kids. When I came back my laptop was next to him I tried to turn it on a few hours after that and every time I did it would start and then freeze I tried running it in safe mode and running a virus program and it told me that the program was already running although it wasn't. I tried booting from my snow leopard dic and it wouldn't even let me do that. Finally I tried booting from my leopard dic and I was able to I installed it brand new then installed SL and it's back up and running I don't know what happened. It took me almost 2 full day to down load everything everything back on to my Mac from my two drop box accounts.
Yes I said drop boxes accounts because I have two. They should really have more space than just 100 gigs. I know sugar sync does but dropbox has a better integration with iOS apps like filemaker.

In addition to AussieDJ's comments, what AV program are you running?
Most of the AV software is only capable of causing troubles on Macs. When asked to help with Macs that are having problems, my step when I see AV software installed is to uninstall it. Generally that fixes the majority of the problems.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and now when I try to sync the I phone or Ipad it says I will loose my data on the iphone or ipad .  how can I sync the phone or I pad without loosing my music ?

I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall ox snow leopard.  when i try to sync my Iphone or Ipad it says that my device was synced with another computer and I will loose my songs on the Iphone or ipad and it will be replaced by the library that is on my computer now.  The library is empty since I had to erase the hard drive.  Can anyone help?

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone/iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone/iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How do I restore my operating system from Snow Leopard back to Mountain Lion on line after erasing my hard drive?

I had to erase my hard drive.  I loaded Snow Leopard with the disk I got with my computer, but I purchased Mountain Lion several months ago and don't have support any longer.  How do I get back to the Mountain Lion operating system, on line?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
You must perform the last step - updating to 10.6.8. Until then you have no access to the App Store. When you can sign into the App Store using the same Apple ID with which your purchased Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. Locate your Mountain Lion purchase line then click on the Install button on the right to re-download.

I had to replace my hard drive and now when I plug in my iPad, itunes says it is synced with another library

That is because the iPad can only "sync" to one iTunes library at a time. You can move all of the iPad contents into a new iTunes library. This discussion will give you a lot of useful information.

This one is Mac specific - not that it is any different except for the iTunes menu.

I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes it says i have to restore my iopd touch to factory settings and will loose my files. I have a few films on there and they show up on my purchases. If i restore, will i be able to get my films back ? as at the moment my ipod wont work now untill i restore anyway.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Here's how to:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.

  • How can I erase my hard drive if the Installer can't find it?

Our iBook, 10.3.9, was pretty reliable for 5 years, but it started to work slower the past days (maybe thru too little free space or too many programs open at the same time), so we restarted a lot.. until it didn't restart but came up with the question mark; then with a black screen/white letters asking for a login. But what is my login? I only know my admin password.
I ran DiskUtility and repaired the permissions and wanted to repair the disk as well, but it said (in red letters): unable, could not unmount disk.
I tried Archive and Install, but it stopped halfway and said there was an error, try again later. I didn't try again, but managed to save most of my documents to another iBook (10.4.3) thru FireWire Target mode.
Then I was ready for Erase & Install.
When I first got this iBook, I had a big accident and had to erase and install, at which time an Apple tech person advised me to first install 10.1 and then 10.2 ('cause this iBook was first made with 10.1, it had 10.2 when I bought it). So this morning I put my 10.1 install CD in and selected Disk Utility to Erase the hard drive. This was recommended in another thread to erase all faulty blocks on a computer. I must say the hard drive itself (below the '27 GB OSX' thing with the triangle in front of it) was already greyed out, but I selected this triangle thing and said erase.
Then I went back into the Installer but... it can't find any hard drive to install OSX on. It shows just one blank space...
The strangest thing is that one time this morning when I opened the iBook, it started up just like normal! But it worked too slow, it wasn't fine, so I restarted and then the problems came back just the same. Now I'm back atthe black screen with white letters. It makes me think though that not all is lost with this computer, which my family hopes with me.
    What can I do???
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

    Cornelius,
ask as many questions as necessary! I know it is a confusing situation.
Your profile lists OS X 10.3.7.
I believe I upgraded last year to 10.3.9.
Do you have a Full Retail Version of Panther available for re-install?
    Yes.
What OS version(s) do you have a full retail version for?
    For 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3.2.
Do you have an OS currently installed on your computer?
    I don't know...
This morning I had set my mind to do the Erase & Install. I inserted the 10.1 disk, opened DUtility and selected "Erase" from the tablist. At that point the hard drive under the top-triangle was already grey I believe. I selected the top line, or the grey line, am not sure which was last. The computer started to spin. I can't tell if it erased anything at that point. But I know that once the computer stopped spinning its operationwheel, I quit DU and went on trying to install, but then there was no installation disc available. There was just a blanc field.
There was nothing else to do but restart, and at that point the computer opened up with a desktop like normal. I know it sounds crazy.
But it didn't work well. I could open a jpg-file in "Preview", but went in "Mail" and it took forever to open a message, at which point I restarted.
And since then, the normal desktop hasn't shown up anymore.
Whenever I restart, I keep getting stuck at 1. a flashing icon with the picture of a globe, which changes into
    2. the question-mark, then
    3. the window "Mac OS" with the blue stripe, filling up almost all the way and then
    3. a black screen with white letters. If I type something and press return, it asks for password. If I type anything and press return, it says 'login incorrect', and then I see a new screen with "Darwin/BSD (X-3.local) (console)..... next line: "login: "
I don't know what my login could be.
I have since started up from the 10.3 CD, but also only saw a blank field where there should be an icon of my hard drive. (at 'select destination').
Since my post, I used my Apple Hardware Test-CD, and that gave a pass. It said "No device found" for AirPort and Mass Storage. "Device found" for Modem and "Passed" for Logic Board, Memory and VideoRAM.
In any case, what I want to do is still to Erase & Install, because something seems to be very wrong and my stuff is safely backed up.
Looking forward to your answer. Thanks a lot.

  • I had to Wipe my hard drive! Ipod wont recognize comp now plz help!!!

I recently had to wipe my hard drive to repair windows, now when I try to sync my I-pod nano it tries to "delete and sync" all my songs I have purchased and downloaded from this very same computer. I need to know how to either get my ipod to resync back to this computer or how to re-aquire the songs I have already purchased. please help, I am new to I-pods! thanks!

    Hello hoparella,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
With your iPod connected, have you tried using the *File-> Transfer Purchases* options?
Otherwise, another work around would be to copy all the music currently on your iPod to your new iTunes library. From there, you can "Erase and Sync" the iPod with your new iTunes library or opt to restore it.

For ways on how to copy music directly from your iPod to iTunes, see this older post of mine.

  • Erased Old Hard Drive

I accidentally erased my hard drive when I installed Leopard onto my machine. Is there any way to recover the desktop files I had?

Unlikely. your only hope is data recovery software like [Data rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [Filesalvage|http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. this is far from guaranteed to work as those files may have been overwritten by new data. you should use that software ASAP to maximize recovery chance. Also, You should start backing up to protect yourself from similar data loss.

  • I have lost my imac bootable disks and have erased my hard drive.

I wanted to format my hard drive and put a clean install of Tiger on my iMac so that I could sell it, so I went in to disc utility and erased my hard drive. What I thought were my bootable discs were for my macbook pro with Snow Leopard on, and they wont work on my iMac. I have since gone in to disc utilities from the bootable discs (just after it tells me these discs wont work) and have replaced my hard drive with the DVD (thinking I would be able to boot to that point and mount an image from another DVD to run tiger from there) and now I am totally lost! I know I shouldnt meddle with things I dont know, but I've never managed to break a windows PC by doing this!
Could someone help please as I have no idea what I can do now!
    Super thanks
    Helen

Replacement disks run about 16.00 per disk.  You can buy Mac OS X Tiger from Amazon for anywhere from 79.00-200.00.
If you buy a full retail copy of an OS like Snow Leopard you can install that on any compatible computer.  The license for a standard retail copy of the Mac OS entitles you to install it on 1 system.  However the retail copy of the Mac OS does not include the iLife Applications which come with the original install disks that came with your computer.
The individual install disks that come with each computer are made just for that computer and include drivers required for that system.  As a former Dell owner I can tell you that Dell also uses specialized install disks for the OS.  They don't hand you a copy of windows, rather a set of disks that are specific to that model of computer.
    Cheers!

  • How to erase a hard drive on a i MAC Power PC with OSX 10.5.8 pre-intel?

I got this i Mac G5 Power PC with a 20" screen (no iSight) and last generation of i Mac repaired.  Capacitors and a power supply did revive my machine and it works fine.  I would like to donate my machine and want to erase the hard drive and make sure that all my personal data is gone.
I have the Leopard disk and I am told that if I booth my machine with the disk while holding the C key then I can go to Disk Utility and erase my hard drive.
Does anyone have a step-by-step approach to guide me through this?
Any help will be most appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Guy

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
