HAL 0.5.8.1-1+kernel 2.16.8=broken automount?

Gnome doesn' t know how to auto mount my removeral usb disk after update, only manual mount works.
Is there anyone meeting the same? Could someone give me a clue, thanks in advance.

JGC wrote:error messages? "Doesn't work" is something we can't fix.
I'm seeing the same thing JGC, though Gnome behaved the same way for me  prior to the last update (i.e. USB drives are not automounted). But it doesn't throw any errors unless there is a log file that might be helpful to you.
If I mount the USB drive manually, it works perfectly. The drive mounts, the icon displays on the desktop, and a Nautilus window opens showing the drives contents.
I have another system running PCLinuxOS and the older Gnome version in it automounts the same USB drive fine. It seems like the preference setting to mount removable drives when hot-plugged is not being honored by Gnome on my Arch box (see the 'Storage' tab for the Removable Drives and Media preferences found at Desktop>Preferences>Removable Drives and Media).
Gnome 2.10 in PCLinuxOS has the same type of preferences setting as Gnome 2.14 on my Arch box. However, when I look at the fstab in PCLinuxOS with the USB drive plugged in and compare it to the Arch fstab when the USB drive is plugged in there is a difference. The fstab in PCLinuxOS is being dynamically written to with the following when the USB drive is plugged in and has automounted:
/dev/sdd1 /mnt/UDISK_20X vfat pamconsole,exec,noauto,noatime,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,managed 0 0
When the USB drive is unplugged this line does not exist in the PCLinuxOS fstab. When the USB drive is plugged into the Arch box, the fstab never changes. Even when I manually mount the USB drive.
Another difference is the following code *always* exisits in the PCLinuxOS fstab and not in the fstab on my Arch box:
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0
I don't know what these 2 lines tell PCLinuxOS to do or if it is even related to the issue at hand. Could be just differences comparing the older base system of PCLinuxOS to the very up-to-date Arch.
I'm planning on removing PCLinuxOS off my main workstation this weekend and installing Arch. It would be nice to know an answer to this odd behavior with Gnome & USB drives, but not a show stopper. Arch is sooooo much nicer!

  • KDE4 / hal no longer automounting usb thumb drives

I have hal and dbus running as services and they were until recently automounting usb storage devices in KDE4. After installing VirtualBox/WinXP it's not working anymore. I did set up a usb device entry in fstab to be used by VirtualBox, but even when I comment out the fstab entry and reboot, hal is no longer automounting.
    Any ideas???
    thanks

    Yes the drives were formated.
I continued to do some researching on Apple.com and Macworld.com and found out a couple of things.  One. There's "Lion Recovery Assistant" and "Lion DiskMaker" or in better terms, one that has a minimal amount of information to connect to Apples servers and download the large install file, and one that is actually bootable.  The later is what I wanted.  Two. I discovered that the LRDA drives are invisable to the eye unless you use Disk Utility to view them.  So basically I was wrong with my statement about Apple's LRDA killing my drives.  Sorry.
Now I still can't figure out how to easily make a bootable drive though.  The LDM says it automatically searches for the install.dmg file if there is one available.  Well it can't find one. I also found out that when you upgrade Lion, which I have to 10.7.4, it automatically deletes the installer.  That's conviently unconvient.  So now I have to figure out my next step so that I can have a bootable install drive.

  • Hal mount folder named "/media/uuid" of all storeage devices.

hay guys new here, I've been trying to figure out how to get HAL to use the devices UUID for the mount folders name. (For example /media/5ee2c068-fab8-4b64-8061-e7662c9c2169) this is so when i make symbolic links to folders on my removable storage devices i don't need to worry about the order i mount mount my removable drives. I know that well at least the time when i used Ubuntu as my primary distribution it was the default configuration to do this.
After doing a bit reading of Hal's default policy files i  noticed that when Hal is invoked to mount a volume it will call the binary "hal-storage-mount" (located in  "/usr/lib/hal") and so I'm guessing this is the mounting command that handles creating a folder in "/media" and mounting the volume to that directory.  so what i would like to know if anyone knows how to configure either hal or "hal-storage-mount" itself to achieve what I'm asking?
any help would be greatly appreciated

I am not sure how to tell hal to auto-make the folders. You could always make the folders manually and set the mountpoints in fstab.
Another option is (specifically for your purpose of creating symbolic links - I do this personally). Set labels on your partitions! HAL automatically creates the mount points in /media according to the partition's label.
You can use gparted to edit the labels.
Ah i didn't know that Hal would use the labels if its available, i guess I'll stick with this option for the mean time. I don't really think configuring my fstab for this case would be very viable for me since it my portable hard drives that I'm trying to setup and having to manually invoke remounting fstab every time i plug something in would be a  little crazy.
i kinda  like using the uuid for the mount directory, it think kinda adds a little bit more security and robustness because it 's unlikely any other device would have the same uuid but they could quite easily have the same label.

When I insert on example a flash disk I see in /media link:
    volume_uuid_7B40_CFDC -> /var/autofs/hal/volume_uuid_7B40_CFDC
If I go in the volume_uuid_7B40_CFDC directory then the flash disk is being got mounted:
    /dev/sdc1 on /var/autofs/hal/volume_uuid_7B40_CFDC type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime,gid=1001,uid=1000,fmask=133,dmask=022,codepage=866,iocharset=utf8,flush)
wow thats quite a bit to churn through, but what it looks like you've had to completely rewrite the polices to invoke your custom "hal-autofs" script and clean up scripts for all the volume devices? very new to how hal is configured and operates. so I'm guessing that you had to make it call a custom script instead of using "hal-storage-mount" and the other scripts involved with the management of mounting and unmounting volumes? does this mean that "hal-storage-mount" can not take custom arguments or be configured to use the uuid for the mount directory's name instead of the label or the "disk"?
though the "hal-autofs" script seems strange, i don't see anywhere where it invokes mounting of the device but i do see that it makes a symbolic link from /var/autofs/hal/<device key> to /media/<device key> (done a little bit of research)so I'm guessing that I'll have to install autofs in order to achieve what I'm trying to do. but does that mean that autofs will mount automatically any and every storage volume and hal will just make a symbolic link to the /media directory when you call hal and say you want to use the volume even though its already mounted. Thats kinda risky isn't it unless i've misunderstood autofs workings having the volume mounted when you unplug the device isnt exactly best practice.....
Thanks guys this is providing some great insight

  • ORA-00374 - Block Size issue

I've already searched and researched this quite a bit. I am not using 9i like the other post about this issue from many years ago. Before you ask "Why a db_block_size of 32k?", this is for a test case. Simple as that.
    My system:
Quad DC Operton, 32GB RAM, 4x 15k SAS disks in hardware RAID10.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit (I much prefer Linux, but this test requires Win2008)
    Oracle 11g R2 64-bit EE
The Disk with the O/S and ORACLE_HOME is formatted with the default 4k size allocation units.
The allocated database file storage IS formatted with 32k sized allocation units and is on a SAN.
I know it's 32k because when I presented the LUN to the server, I formatted it with 32k allocation units. See below the output paying attention to the * * section:
    C:\Users\********************>fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo o:
NTFS Volume Serial Number : 0x60d245e2d245bcd2
    Version : 3.1
    Number Sectors : 0x00000000397fc7ff
    Total Clusters : 0x0000000000e5ff1f
    Free Clusters : 0x0000000000e5f424
    Total Reserved : 0x0000000000000000
    Bytes Per Sector : 512
    Bytes Per Cluster :               32768
Bytes Per FileRecord Segment : 1024
Clusters Per FileRecord Segment : 0
Mft Valid Data Length : 0x0000000000040000
    Mft Start Lcn : 0x0000000000018000
    Mft2 Start Lcn : 0x0000000000000001
    Mft Zone Start : 0x0000000000018000
    Mft Zone End : 0x0000000000019920
    RM Identifier: 35506ECB-7F9E-11DF-99F3-001EC92FDE3F
So, my db file storage is formatted with a 32k allocation size.
    My issue is this:
Oracle shows me the 32k block size when running DBCA using the Custom template. I choose it and the other required options are configured, and when it starts building the DB, I get this:
    ORA:00374: parameter db_block_size = 32768 invalid ; must be a multiple of 512 in the range [2048..16384].
Other responses I've seen to this says "Windows doesn't support a allocation size above 8k or 16k" which is utterly absurd since I run SQL2008 on a few machines and it DOES support up to a 64k allocation size, which is what I run. I know this for a FACT.
Windows DOES support up to a 64k allocation size. Does anyone know why Oracle is giving me a hard time about it?
I saw Metalink note 794842.1, but I'd like to know the reasoning/logic for this limitation?

A WAG.. Oracle is written to be run on a wide variety of operating system. As operating systems differ one typically designs something that is equivalent in functionality to a Windows HAL - this provides an abstraction layer between the kernel services/calls that is needed by the s/w and the actual implementation of such by the kernel itself.
So despite the kernel supporting feature X, it could be different than similar features supported on other kernels and difficult to implement via this s/w HAL-like interface. The Windows kernel has a lot of differences from the Linux kernel for example.. and somehow Oracle needs to make the same core db s/w run on both. Not unrealistic to expect that some kernel features will be supported better than others, as there is a common denominator ito design and implementation in the core s/w.
As this is a case with block sizes... not that critical IMO. I have played with different block sizes in a 20+TB storage system and Oracle RAC (10.2g) on Linux (part of testing the combo of storage system and cluster and technologies used). Larger block sizes made zero difference to raw I/O performance. The impact was instead more a logical one. Fewer db blocks can be cached as these are larger.. more data can be written into a datablock. And as numerous experienced Oracle professionals have commented, Oracle decided that the default 8KB size is a best fit at this layer.
So extensive and very accurate testing needs to be done IMO to determine whether a larger block size is justified... and the effort to do that may just outweigh the little gains achieved by finding the "+perfect+" block size. Why not focus all that effort instead on correctly using Oracle? Application design? Data modeling? Development and coding? These are factors that play the most dominant roles at the end of day that impact and determine performance.

  • [SOLVED] Set up ZTE mf627 GSM Modem - almost there...

    Hi eve!
I have this goddamn dongle that never worked...
I read alot of posts about it, tried installing usb_modeswitch and everything, but the device never showed up on NM.
Plus i saw a big change in the last year and logs show a very strange situation that it's not yet documented on any forum. In fact, i still can't understand how the hardware is abstracted now that HAL is deprecated... Kernel magic powder? Keel anyway, HAL was a bit junky ;-)
So when i stick it in, it first tell me
Apr 27 00:03:24 myhost kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
    Apr 27 00:03:24 myhost kernel: scsi8 : usb-storage 1-4:1.0

Apr 27 00:03:35 myhost kernel: usb 1-4: USB disconnect, address 4
!! Then! The device automatically shut down and restart givin theese new messages:
Apr 27 00:03:40 myhost kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5

Apr 27 00:03:45 myhost kernel: sd 9:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
At this point one may think that HAL now see a new modem and dbusses NM to create a new connection through the frendly wizard... but it doesn't...
Plus i get a ZTE MMC Storage on my "Computer" that i can't "safely remove"
Error detaching: helper exited with exit code 1: Detaching device /dev/sdb
    USB device: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-3)

    (Continuing despite SYNCHRONIZE CACHE failure.)
STOP UNIT: FAILED: No such file or directory
So i tried usb_modeswitch with the setting i saw on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1017630&page=3 and it just worsened the situation since it would only mound as an MMC once restarted.
HAL infos, gathered from the link above, made no difference...
lsusb give "Bus 001 Device 009: ID 19d2:0064 ONDA Communication S.p.A. ZTE MF627 AU" with various Interface descriptor ("bInterfaceClass         8 Mass Storage" and various "bInterfaceClass       255 Vendor Specific Class" , no modem though...)
Damn, i'm afraid that these dongles only work fine if you are a teenager with an unsure personality that needs to check her facebook profile every 5 minutes on a windlords svista...

F*#ç s>*t!!! You mean modemmanager is the opt depend for NM to bring up the modem?!!!
    sorry... thought it was wvdial...
So cool! This gives ZTE mf627 full linux support out of the box ;-)
And even the MMC reader seems to work! WoW
    Love you all guys!

  • Workarounds for 2.0.1 app install crashes

    Hi All,
This will be a long post, but hopefully of help to those suffering from the infuriating application related crashes and instability of 2.0 and 2.0.1.
For those just looking for the workarounds, jump to the bottom of this message. For those interested in a technical discussion of what's going on behind the scenes, keep reading.
After running a very stable iPod Touch on 1.1.3 for quite some time complete with jailbroken apps, I decided it was time to give 2.0 and the official third party apps a go.
At first I loved the new features especially the WPA Enterprise support and MS Exchange support which I think are brilliant, but then I started to notice all kinds of problems with crashes like most other people in this forum as soon as I had a few apps installed.
Basically the thing was horribly unstable to the point of being unusable, and I did about 10 full restores in the first two weeks, just to keep the thing going, and experienced dozens of cases of being stuck on the apple boot screen.
The crashes could be narrowed down into two types of crashes - one is crashes while trying to RUN applications, and the second is crashes trying to INSTALL or UN-INSTALL applications.
The first type - crashes while running applications would take the form of either an app crashing back to the home screen when launched, or causing a total system freeze or a spontaneous reboot either when launching an app, or sometimes while running an app.
Usually when this would happen most large apps (hint: memory hungry apps) would fail to launch, good examples are super monkey ball, cromag rally and enigmo. Repeated attempts to launch these apps would fail and eventually the device would spontaneously reboot.
In all cases, a full reboot of the device, (hold sleep button for 5 seconds, swipe to power off, then power on again) would allow the app to run again. The reviews of some apps on the app store are littered with complaints from people that the app crashes during launch - the irony is the app is NOT to blame, in all cases I have seen.
The second type of crash is a lockup and/or spontaneous reboot during app installation or removal either through the built in appstore application or via syncing with itunes. More often than not this type of crash would render the device unbootable with you stuck at the apple logo - you could tell this was happening because after a few minutes the apple logo would go darker, and the device is no longer pingable over wifi.
First the good news - for me anyway, 2.0.1 FIXES the first type of crash - apps crashing back to the home screen, spontaneous reboots and lockups when launching apps or using them. I haven't had super monkey ball fail to launch, or crash during play a single time since updating to 2.0.1 for example. Wahoo Apple.
When not adding/removing/updating applications, I now find 2.0.1 to be quite stable, apart from the usual Safari crashes, which seem to happen a bit more often than 1.1.3.
Now the bad news - the app install / un-install related crashes are NOT fixed in 2.0.1 or even alleviated, so these are what I will focus on in this message describing workarounds I have found and the reasoning behind them.
Ok here's the deal, with a bit of analysis the root cause of the problem is LOW MEMORY conditions that occur during the app install / un-install process. It seems to be a combination of increased system memory requirements of the 2.0 firmware in general (there is simply more stuff running than there was in 1.1.x, so there is less free memory) as well as what look like memory leaks (or at least poor coding) in both Springboard and mobileinstallationproxy. More on those in a minute.
In addition the emergency low memory handling of the system (maybe the kernel) seems to be broken in 2.0.x - once free memory gets below a certain point the system will hard freeze - this never happened in 1.1.x, at most it would cause a reboot if memory became critical and nothing could be done to free memory.
Ok, what is mobileinstallationproxy ? This is a program whose job it is to install and uninstall applications, basically, and did not exist in 1.1.x firmware. When an application is to be installed or removed either directly on the device or by syncing with itunes, this is the process that is launched to do it.
Problem number one - sometimes, this processes memory usage will grow enormously - there is typically only 60MB ram free no additional apps are running and background mailcheck is disabled. mobileinstallationproxy's memory usage will often climb to reach or exceed this amount causing an extreme low memory condition which will cause the Springboard to try to kill off unnecessary processes, but if it can't find enough memory the device will either freeze or spontaneously reboot - the reboot in the middle of application install / un-install corrupts the application state, causing more trouble later on.
Ok, what is Springboard ? This is the main application on an ipod touch / iphone which gives you your home screen, and manages the launching of applications, provides touchscreen input to applications, and also does additional memory management by asking applications to reduce their memory usage if free memory is tight, and will even go so far as to quit background processes to free up memory when memory gets really tight.
Problem number two - sometimes Springboard starts allocating large amounts (over 70-80MB) of memory itself causing a low memory condition - and it cant free up memory because it can't ask itself to quit! At least, not without rendering the device unusable, because you lose the ability to use the touchscreen......
This typically happens when Springboard is "regenerating the application map" which basically means it is looking at newly installed applications to find out details about them and display them on the home screen. This regenerating happens both immediately after application install, and during bootup (before the lock screen) if it wasn't previously finished. BIG PROBLEM.
What happens if the device crashes if you are half way through installing an app ? The answer is that when you try to boot up again Springboard starts regenerating the application map before you are presented with the lock screen - it looks like nothing is happening, but it is. Corrupt applications can cause Springboard to crash during this phase which means you are stuck in an INFINITE LOOP of rebooting showing the Apple logo, which is what many people have experienced.
Problem number 3 - if you have a LOT of applications installed, and just one of them gets corrupted during a crash, when the device reboots, Springboard will start rebuilding the application maps, but this can take a LONG time, and there is a TIME LIMIT on how long Springboard is allowed to run in this state! A watchdog process waits for Springboard to respond during bootup but because Springboard is busy regenerating the application map it doesn't respond. If it doesn't respond in a certain amount of time (approx 5 minutes) the watchdog will KILL Springboard, thus not only preventing it from finishing the job and letting you get to the lock screen, but possibly further corrupting data, and causing the device to freeze, as Springboard is an essential system process.
This is the reason why the system becomes prone to getting stuck on the Apple screen after just a single application becomes corrupted, if you have MORE than a certain number of applications installed. If you have few applications installed (less than approx 10) the situation of one app becoming corrupted is recoverable, and self healing, if you have many applications installed (over 20) there is never enough time for Springboard to finish the job before the watchdog terminates it - thus being stuck at the Apple Logo with no escape other than a system restore.
For anyone who wonders how I am gathering the data to form these conclusions there are two tools that I've used - one is freely available from Apple, and that is the 'iPhone Configuration Utility' available from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/iphoneconfigurat ionutility10formacosx.html
Which has the ability to show the local system log (console) of the device in real time, showing things such as:
    Sat Aug 9 20:54:28 unknown configd[15] <Notice>: kernel memory event (93), free: 376, active: 1179, inactive: 770, purgeable: 0, wired: 5400
    Sat Aug 9 20:54:30 unknown configd[15] <Notice>: kernel memory event (90), free: 376, active: 1398, inactive: 788, purgeable: 0, wired: 5417

    Sat Aug 9 20:54:33 unknown configd[15] <Notice>: kernel memory event (90), free: 376, active: 1455, inactive: 1204, purgeable: 0, wired: 5419
Sat Aug 9 20:54:33 unknown SpringBoard[16] <Warning>: Memory level is urgent (10), but there are no apps to warn!
A great deal of information about what is going on can be gained from watching this log file, and the program can be left monitoring even during an itunes sync.
The second way I have gathered data is by running top over ssh on a jailbroken version of the firmware. I don't endorse or encourage jailbreaking of firmware, but in this instance it has allowed me to gather invaluable data on the problem, and I would stress that the crashes that I've been chasing occur equally on standard and jailbroken firmware.
In particular ssh has allowed me to prove one hypothesis - when the device gets stuck at the Apple logo after an app is corrupted, and is in an unrecoverable state that requires yet another restore, if I quickly ssh in as soon as I can during the bootup phase, and delete all the Appstore applications from /var/mobile/Applications the device will almost immediately spring to life and has been "saved" from requiring another restore - this proves that Springboard is getting bogged down scanning the applications and once they are removed it will boot normally again and the apps can be reinstalled.
    WORKAROUNDS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The biggest problems here are (a) too many apps installed preventing bootup recovery once an app gets corrupted, and (b) low memory situations being encountered during app install / uninstall causing the corruption in the first place.
    1) Don't install or update Apps using the built in Appstore application on the ipod/iphone. For reasons not entirely clear this is a very hit and miss proposition and there is a VERY high chance that you will get a freeze or a crash from doing this if you have more than a few apps installed, and end up in an unrecoverable state. Just don't do it, always sync apps across from itunes.
    2) Free up as much memory as possible BEFORE syncing applications with itunes, and this applies both to installing and un-installing applications. The best way to do this is disable MobileMail from running in the background. If you have automatic message checking of any kind enabled MobileMail launches at bootup and runs in the background ALL the time, consuming approximately 14MB of ram, and this is often the straw that broke the camels back when memory gets tight.
To do so, disable PUSH, and change Fetch new Data to Manually, then either do a full reboot (sleep button for 5 seconds then swipe to turn off, then press to turn on again) OR launch mobile mail, wait for it's mail check to finish, then hold down the home button for 5 seconds to do a forced quit. It's imperative that automatic checking of mail is disabled, or it will immediately launch in the background again.
This step of disabling MobileMail to free up a bit more memory makes the most difference of all the things I have tried in preventing crashes during application syncing, so don't skimp. You can enable automatic mail checking again afterwards.
    3) As much as it pains me to say, having downloaded over 30+ apps, if you want your ipod/iphone to be stable, until Apple fixes this issue, install as few apps as you possibly can - just the ones you really need, and not lots of gimmicky things you don't really need. Try to keep it under 20 at any one time, and you can do this on the Application tab in iTunes telling it to sync only selected applications. Keeping the number of synced applications down to a minimum makes a big difference, and means that even if you do get a crash during app installation it will usually recover. If you have lots of apps installed it will NOT recover by itself.
Good luck all, and roll on 2.0.2.

If you DO get in the situation where the iPhone won't load and is stuck at the Apple logo, there is an alternative to Restoring: renaming the Applications folder momentarily.
Of course this assumes you have a way of getting to the Applications folder before the phone has fully booted. I am lucky as I have OpenSSH installed and when this crash occurs the WiFi has already connected, so I can (for example) log in and rename Applications to Applications2 and then back again.
The Springboard will start about 5 seconds after you rename the folder. This at least gives you an opportunity to back stuff up or try to remove the offending application instead of restoring.
I have heard that you can use iPhoneBrowser on Windows to do the same but not tested this.

  • How to use DVB on ArchLinux (with an em28xx chip)?

    Hi there,

So it seems that the device has been recognized.. I downloaded the firmwares from http://konstantin.filtschew.de/v4l-firmware/ (the v2, since it is the 0ccd:005e version). I've also extracted the xc3028-v27.fw from the windows drivers using extract_xc3028.pl, since dmesg was complaining for the missing file.
However, Kaffeine doesn't recognize the DVB device, and I can't get any other player to work with it.
Is the kernel-bundled em28xx module broken for this device? I remember that I could make this USB dongle work some months ago in an Ubuntu setup, compiling the v4l from sources - do you think that this is required? I see many people can't compile it with the latest kernels.. and don't know exactly where to start.
Any help would be very appreciated.. thank you
    Cosma

Anybody can explain me what's the difference between /dev/video* and /dev/adapter*/* ?
I tried to cat my /dev/video1 (sometimes, plugging out and in the adapter, it gets assigned to video1) and some weird stuff is actually received so I decided to try a frequency scan.. I prepared the frequency file for my local muxes, installed the linuxtv-dvb-apps package, and tried to scan:
    bash-3.2# scan ./it-Roma
    scanning ./it-Roma
    using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
main:2247: FATAL: failed to open '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0': 2 No such file or directory
(also triend to play with the -f, -d and -a options to switch on adapter1, demux1 and frontend1)
Now, those devices was not created at all in my system.. isn't v4l supposed to create them, once recognized the dvb device?

  • Can't mount USB flash or external disk

For the last couple of weeks, the only way I can get anything to mount is by putting it in the fstab.  It used to work when the OS would detect the media.
Of course, I'm running hal and dbus.
I would consider it a favour if someone would point me in the direction of a howto, thread, documentation, or whatever on how to set this up so I can insert a USB key and have the OS detect and mount it.
I'm running KDE 4.3.4 and it discovers the device and asks if I wish to open it with dolphin (digicam, or no action).  If I select dolphin, I get an error.
    An error occurred while accessing 'USB-KEY', the system responded: org.freedesktop,DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.267" (uid=1000 pid=16082 comm="dolphin) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=8014 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
Again, I would appreciate it if someone would steer me in the right direction.  This must be documented somewhere.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anything relevant in this forum or the wiki.

This worked for me thanks! Although, I am wondering why is this? I understand that it is giving the right user permissions to mount and access the drive but is this a work around for something I may have forgotten?  I don't want to "jimmy rig" it.

  • New kernel(8/13/08) and hal notification

After yesterday's kernel/system upgrade I got message to remove hal from etc/rc.conf as it is deprecated, or being deprecated.  (Ubuntu 9.10-alpha release notes also gave similar info about hal)
If this is so what is replacing hal? --udev new version+?  How will that affect # 'pacman -S hal' step for automatic xorg setup during installation(August iso version); and what daemon, if any, will replace hal in the daemon array of /etc/rc.conf?
I want to thank the Archer's for the great wikis:)  KDE-4.3 is beautiful!

djszapi I am using standard 32-bit i686 version.  I was wondering about message during update of 8/13 that said hal is being deprecated(?) to remove it from daemon array of /etc/rc.conf. Unless I misunderstood. Hal  is still in my /etc/rc.conf.
Putting a !hal in the daemons list on reboot, got me to login window without mouse or keyboard activity.       Using Mandriva's root gedit I removed the !(from hal) and my system reboots with keyboard and mouse again functioning. Just to be sure I checked with pacman and xf86-input-keyboard and -mouse were missing.  They were re-installed.
I also have an /etc/rc.conf.pacnew which is like the fresh install file.  Wonder when that will take-over?

  • Random Kernel Panic after upgrade to kernel 2.6.36

    Hello,
First of all, I apologise if this topic has already come up on the forums, but i've checked and can't see anything specifically relating to the problem im having, and ive also checked the bugs section of Archwiki and can't seem to see anything on there either. I'm not sure what information you guys need so ill just post as much as I can think of in this thread and then if you need any other info, ill post it on request.
The problem im having relates to a recent system update, which I did sometime within the past 4 weeks or so, after not upgrading for quite a while due to lack of free time.
In the last update I remember seeing it upgrading the kernel from 2.6.35 to 2.6.36, and since then I have been getting completly random kernel panics, whereby everything freezes. If I have audio output, the sound crashes and everything freezes, and the caps lock and scroll lock lights just flash in sync on the keyboard.
I have never had any problems like this in all the 7 months that i've been using Arch as a permenant OS.
    Hardware:
    Mobo: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
Ram: 2GB (2x 1GB different brand sticks, same specs)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz
    GFX: Nvidia 8800GT 512MB
Plug and Play hardware that is normally always connected:
    1. Zoom Wireless Dongle (4410b chipset, using ndiswrapper and the Zoom windows driver)
    2. Digital TV Stick (Artec T1) with specific firmware and using MeTV as a viewer.
I've looked in all of the logs, including: dmesg, everything.log, daemon.log, errors.log, messages.log and all the other logs. But there is very little information relating to the crash in there. I'm guessing this is because its a kernel panic so it doesn't have chance to dump anything into the logs before it all crashes? If needs be I can post whichever logs you think will be most useful, but i'm using my laptop at the minute so I wont get chance to post them until tomorrow evening.
I've also tried enabling the testing repos and upgraded to kernel 2.6.37-1 to see if this suspected bug is fixed, but the panic seems to happen the same, if not more with kernel 2.6.37-1. At the minute I've rolled my system back to kernel 2.6.36 because it seemed a little more stable.
It doesn't just crash when your in the X server either. Theres been a few times when i've had a kernel panic during boot. Sometimes a couple of seconds after it starts to boot into Arch. And sometimes just as its processing the Udev events. But as I say it seems completely random rather than relating to specific events.
During one of the crashes at boot I got an error message on the screen which read:
    Setting Latency Timer to 64
HDA Intel 0000:80:01.0: PCI: disallowing DAC for device
    [<c131621b>] ? error_code+0x67/0x6c
Thats as much as I can think of at the minute. As I say, if you need any more information or need me to paste my log files then let me know and i will do that tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for the help, its much appreciated.
    Scott.

    Hi Daniel,
I'm just guessing that its a kenel panic, as when it happens both the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash in sync, which is a sign of kernel panic isn't it?
    My cpu is i686.
I've just read that post and i've downgraded udev to 164-3 to see if this solves the problem as some people have said in that post, although others later on in the thread say that this doesn't solve it for them. This morning it took me 4 restarts just to get arch to boot without the panic. I took a picture of the screen during the panic which ill post after work this evening, it looks pretty similar to the picture posted by "rabid_works" in the thread you pasted. I'm not sure about your post in the other threat that relates to the errors in the Oops report, could you clarify this so I can see if the problems reported in that thread are what I am experiencing?.
In the meantime, here is my pacman.log from 26.12.10 when I did the upgrade and the problems started. (note I have done upgrades following 26.12.10 to see if anything fixed the problem but with no luck, that is why the log is so long and I don't have any hosting anymore, so i've had to post it in quotes, I apologise).

I'm also going to run some hardware tests after work just to double check that all my hardware is functioning as it should so that will eliminate another potential cause.
If downgrading Udev to 164-3 doesn't solve the problem, i will try your version of it Daniel. And if that fails ill try downgrading the kernel to 2.6.35 or something and see if that solves it.
Sorry for the super long post,
    Thanks again for your help.
    Scott.

  • [S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0

After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and  arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
    journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
    As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
    [edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.

Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
    grub.cfg now looks like
    # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
    # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates

It seems as if the lines you mentioned, Scimmia, have changed. I'll take that as a good sign.
[edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
[edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
    [edit3] Successfully downgraded.
[edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

    Hello guys,
for 2 months I'm getting errors and crashes on my MP. I have no idea what causes thouse crashes, I'm hoping somebody can help me to check what is wrong and explain to me.
I will add two crash reports and I would like to know if you can figure out what causes the crash.
