Half the internet unavailable, i.e. google no, hal...

Hi,
I'm having trouble connecting to most websites google, ebay, saainsbury's, festive-sparkle, but this one is ok, I know through facebook that someone else in the near locality is also having the same issues. Location is Bridgwater Somerset.
1x hardwired pc and 2x Windows 7 laptops & android phones x2 are all having the same issues through wifi.
Thanks Alex
Ps) Black concave fronted home hub, plugged intto test socket.

I created a forum account so that I could post on this issue. I am having what appears to be an identical problem to the original poster (OP), especially not being able to access any sites that link to Google. I even had to use someone else’s computer to register, because the Captcha words were not being loaded into the signup page! I am using Windows 7, with a fixed Ethernet connection to a BT Home Hub 5 (Type A). What is particularly relevant is that I also live in Bridgwater, Somerset, though I am not a neighbour of the OP. However, having seen the recent post about their proximity to the BMW garage, I can confirm that I also live within 2 miles of there. This problem, therefore, surely cannot be a coincidence. I do not know what cab I am on.

This problem has been ongoing since Boxing Day afternoon, when it suddenly started for no apparent reason. I rang BT Customer Services yesterday (29th December) and essentially got nowhere, as I had already done all the things that they suggested. The woman I spoke to stated that as there was no problem on the line it was not an issue with BT. She basically said it must be a browser problem and advised me to go and find a local technical person to deal with it. This was despite me reading out the original post above to her and pointing out that I lived in the same area. One would have thought that she might notify the technical department to at least investigate this.
Some things are just downright mystifying. I can Ping and Tracert to www.gooogle.com (see below), but my browser (Firefox) just says “Connecting…” for a few minutes if I try to load it there, with the busy icon in the tab, and then gets timed out. I have tried two other browsers (IE and Opera) “out of the box” with no adjustments, but the result is the same.

Note that hop 10 is referencing a BT site. At what point does connection stop being a BT issue?
Some sites will load (www.bing.com has no problem), while others may do so after a while, or may do so if I click the “reload” icon a few times. Others will not do so if there are calls to any Google-related site (such as ajax.googapis.com, www.google-analytics.com, www.googletagmanager.com). This includes YouTube, which will not load at all.
One site (The Open University, http://www.open.ac.uk/) will load its main page, but fails to connect when clicking on “Signin”, the url for which is: “https://msds.open.ac.uk/signon/sams001.aspx?nsh=2&URL=http://www.open.ac.uk/”. Apart from being very frustrating, this is particularly puzzling.
A lot of sites appear to finish loading, yet the busy icon (the blue spinning circle) on the page tab continues to revolve for several minutes. Sometimes it eventually stops, sometimes it does not. Some sites are taking much longer to load than normal (the Sky TV guide site took several minutes, whereas it usually takes a few seconds).
I temporarily disabled my firewall/anti-virus (Norton 360), but it made no difference.
I tried another PC, but the result was the same.
I restarted AND reset the BT Hub, but no change. I tried using the old BT hub (a mark 3, I think), but results were identical.
I am not going to go through the whole process of reinstalling Windows, etc, because it takes many hours and I seriously doubt it will make any difference.
BT say it is not their problem, because there is no fault on the line (and the speed is the same too, as far as I can tell). However, there is another person in the house who has a laptop. That connects to a Belkin router, then the line goes to the same telegraph pole and BT cabinet. The difference is that he is on TalkTalk instead of BT. He CAN access Google AND get the Signin page for the OU. BTW, he uses the same firewall as me (Norton 360) with the same settings, so that can't be the problem.
@gg30340: I am inclined to agree that the problem lies with a BT server somewhere.
Your link did work for me eventually, though it took several minutes. I noticed at least three Google sites being referenced during the wait.
UPDATE: I downloaded DNSJumper (http://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v1-0-6/) and changed the DNS IPs to the ones suggested by gg30340. Google loads!!!
HOWEVER…
The OU still has the same oddity of not loading the Signin page.
YouTube now loads its home page, but is still “busy” trying to load something after some minutes. I tried loading a user profile and only part of the page initially loaded, whilst it showed the busy symbol again. The page suddenly finished loading after about 5 minutes.
So, the problem is not entirely resolved.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

• IPhone 4 same audio issues as half the internet it seems

So.. iPhone was working fine...
iTunes said Hey! iOS 5.1 is out! Upgrade?
So I said sure why not.. Haven't had any problems yet...
Was out and about, and needed to make a call..
They could hear me but I couldn't hear them. Until I turned on my speaker.
I have tried the reset (hold button til it turns off) [multiple times]
I have tried 'Reset All Settings'
I have tried 'Erase All Content and Settings'
I have tried restoring via iTunes
Nothing worked.
So now I have an 800 Euro (about $1042 USD) phone that is useless for making phone calls.
Warranty repair is out, because of course my warranty support expired last month.
Hours of google searches later, it seems there are a ton of people with this problem, and no real 'official' answer
from Apple.
Any ideas? If it is a known issue why doesn't Apple just push the last known good iOS to downgrade people's devices instead of leaving them
with useless toys?

• ISE NEEDS THE INTERNET FOR THE CLIENT PORTAL?

Guys
this might seem like a silly question but ill ask anyway.
Out setup is fairly simple
WLC5760 (Code 3.3 i think) ISE 1.2 and a few 2600 series APs.
We have two portals, authenticated guest and Corporate that exist on the ISE.
The issue is this - the page (Portal Page) sometimes does not display on the client browser - independent of the type device and/or OS.
We checked DNS, did wireshark traces etc but it pointed to a network issue.
Eventually, i recreated the environment and noticed something - if i didnt actually have internet connectivity to the outside world, the ISE portal page never came up - My confusion was that why would a local page depend on Internet
I tested a few times and sure enough it was consistent.
I placed back into the customer environment and same issue occurred. I then setup a router to bypass their firewall (checkpoint - perimeter) and it worked consistently.
My thinking was that the Checkpoint was the issue - but again how come?
So, the question is, and looking at the post i know that you guys would need some more technical stuff, why would we seem to require actual Internet for that page to be displayed consistently?
thanks in advance for any gentle reply :)

It does require the Internet to check (say google.com) first and then go to ISE. In case anyone has an issue with the ISE portal (other than DNS or IPHONE issues) you may want to check your Internet stability.

• Only IE is able to access the internet; no other applications can access internet

I recently upgraded my original Hitachi 160GB hard drive on my Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 to a WD 320GB hard drive, and cloned my original hard drive image to the new hard drive using Acronis True Image WD Edition's Disc Cloning utility. I had the utility resize the original partitions proportionally. Everything else seems to have transferred correctly to my new hard drive, but I find that ONLY Internet Explorer is able to access the internet, although I can ping my network printer, the other computers on my home wireless network, and even other IP addresses on the internet such as www.google.com, etc.
I had removed my previous ZoneAlarm Free Firewall before doing the hard drive upgrade; it appears to have been conflicting with my Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird applications, causing them to hang up and then not close down properly. I am currently using only the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, along with AVG 9.0.814 Free Antivirus, SpyBot S&D 1.6.2.0 and Spywareblaster 4.3. I also used to use AdAware Free Edition, but had to uninstall it as I have not been able to update it to the newest version successfully.
Is there something in the Windows Vista Home Premium OS I have on my machine that might be causing this problem? It is funny that ONLY Internet Explorer is able to access the internet now.

Yes I do, and even with them checked to allow access (i.e., as an exception), it does not help. I have tried all of the MS help about the problem, but they refer me to my machine's manufacturer for support, since my copy of Windows Vista came with it. I cannot even use my DVD NeXtCopy software, as it requires access to the internet too, and even after re-installing it, I cannot activate the new installation because it cannot access the activation server!
I hope someone can help me. Upgrading to this new hard drive should not be so disastrous!
Regards and thanks for trying to help!

• Why do I see: iTunes Help is unavailable because your computer isn't connected to the Internet. IE9 works fine but iTunes does not connect to the store.

I have tried 4 days to get iTunes 10.4 working on my Win7 x64 machine. I purchased a new iPhone4 and after syncing it the first time, I can't connect to the iTunes store.

I tried upgrading permissions but it did not help!? Can anyone tell me what is wrong? Thanks

Try
Reboot the computer, see if that fixes it.
Then try:
Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and simply reinstalling OS X
Log in and update to 10.6.8
c boot off the 10.6 disk again and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk
reboot and all should be fine, except some third party programs that install kext files, those will have to be reinstalled from fresh sources.

I do not know if it's relevant or not, but I got a message on my ipad while on safari saying that my iPhone has a virus. I looked it up and it seems it might have just been an ad from the website I was on, but it happened around the same time YouTube stopped working.

You will find that using the YouTube app will provide a better viewing experience for YouTube videos.

Hi Patrick,
I'm starting to think it's either an AirPort card issue or something to do with the Mac OS. I have stopped using wireless as much as possible in my home (have wired up several new Ethernet outlets), and it sure is nice having Internet run at the speed it's supposed to all the time, and with no drops. Might be something to consider.
In the meantime:
Open System Preferences > Network > select AirPort > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply > Turn AirPort Off > Turn AirPort On
Open System Preferences > Network > select Ethernet > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply
(FOR LION: If you can’t see an option to turn ipv6 off, set it to link-local only.)

Most of the current Apple Intel based computers are comparable in CPU speed. I don't think it is so much the model of laptop as it is the memory, and storage capacity of the machine. If you are going to use FCP on a regular basis, perhaps as a professional or semi-professional, then you should think about the maximum memory and a very large capacity internal disk drive. For instance, one hour of finished compressed video will take up about 1.5 to 2Gbytes of disk space. If you add up the raw footage and still imagery and audio, you'll use up your disk drive capacity real quick. So a hard disk on the order of 750Gbytes @ 7200rpms might be good for video editing. 5400RPMs might be slow to rendering times. Rendering a video might take up a lot of memory so more memory is better e.g. 8Gbytes.
As a rule of thumb, once you get to about 80% of your disk drive or memory you'll see degradation of performance.
You can check out macsales.com. THey have a menu system that will allow you to pick and choose from various alternatives. BTW, it's been said that although Macs are typically spec'd at a certain memory size, macsales.com found that Apple computers will actually support higher memory levels. That is, if 4Gbytes are spec'd, some machines support 6Gbytes. macsales.com will provide the guidance for you.
You might also consider buying an external disk e.g. 500Gbytes to carry around with you for back-up or transport to another machine.

no you can't install apps on Apple TV and it does not have a browser
