Halfway through my update phone update my phone froze

i was connecting and updating my 4 phone and it got almost all the way done but stopped and froze the phone. it is stuck on the black screenand apple symbol with the progress bar. the phone wont turn off and itunes wont recognize the device. other devices are recognized on itunes though aka. my ipod anf ipad.

DFU mode? How do I do that? So far the only thing I can do is hold down both buttons to power it on and nothing is on the screen and it wont reconize on my computer....

My sister has forgotten her IPod touch passcode and in my efforts to restore it, I accidentally updated it, leaving it unable to go into recovery mode. It no longer comes onto my devices list on iTunes but asks if I want the computer to read the device, but as I can not unlock it, either option has resulted in nothing. Can anyone help me restore the device? Or at least reset it, as it will not go into recovery mode.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Disconnected halfway through update

Hi all,
Halfway through latest software update, usb cable was kicked and process interrupted. Now if I turn the phone on it just shows the not connected by usb picture, and if I try and connect to usb it just vibrates, attempts to connect and repeats with nothing on the phone screen (an no response from pc or zune). How do I fix this issue without losing any of my data on the phone?

Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
From what you are describing it sound like the update was interrupted while it was actually in progress instead of writing to the device. In that case I suggest you visit a Nokia Care Point where they will be able to rewrite the firmware. This will however overwrite everything on the device so all your personal data and apps will be lost.
When finished you will get your contacts and calendar events back when you log into the respective accounts (like your LiveID). You will be able to get your apps back using the app Reinstaller. With paid apps, just select 'buy' again and Marketplace will know you paid before and allow a re-install.

SBerman- I am the only owner/user of the phone but thanks for trying on that angle. It doesn't apply but I appreciate your idea.
KiltedTim- Yes, I have encountered an activation lock. The Apple ID should be the one that I use when I go into itunes but that one is not working. I even tried the Apple email/id I got when I first bought the phone years ago and that didn't work either. It is asking me for an id that ends in @me.com and I have NO IDEA what this is or how to get it to "shift focus" onto one of the id's I do know.
Does that make things clearer?

If it's frozen you may have to do a reset.
Hold down the home button (circle with a square in it) and the sleep/wave button (button on top) together until the phone restarts.
It may go into recovery mode, which means I hope you have a backup

as ar as I know, voicemails aren't stored on your iPhone, your carrier saves them.

Using his article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!

Just to be clear. You have downloaded the Yosemite installer. However you say while it's updating you get the error you are not online. This is confusing since you shouldn't be able to use your computer in the process of updating.
Exactly where do you see you need to 10.9 to get on Safari?
