Having MAJOR difficulties displaying X11 applications remotely

I've been reading on various forums and through searches on the web for a solution to "locally" displaying "remote" X11 applications.
There have been numerous number of posts that I've read through and tried my darnedest to get this working, but have had NO / NONE / ZERO sucess. Not even the mere hints of success. So hopefully there are others that might be able to help me with my plight.
Ultimate goal:
Run Matlab 7.2 from "remote" Apple G5 Tower running Mac OS 10.4.6 on "local" Apple Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.6
Basic Problem at present:
1.) open X11.app on "local" machine (xterm opens as default)
2.) ssh -Y [email protected] -- I've also tried 'ssh -X ...' and 'ssh -X -Y ...' as well as systematic variations of this with editing the ssh_config and sshd_config 'X11Forwarding','ForwardX11','ForwardAgent','X11DisplayOffset', and 'X11UseLocalhost'
3.) xeyes & -- I've also tried systematic variations with variations from step 2 incorporated by entering in: "export DISPLAY='.0'; xeyes &", "export DISPLAY='local.ip:0.0'; xeyes &", "export DISPLAY=':local.ip.0'; xeyes &", etc., so on and so forth
4.) message display on "remote" machine:
"Error: Can't open display:"
NOTHING WORKS. I'M COMPLETELY AT WITS END!!!
EITHER PLEASE SEND ME A LARGE BLUNT OBJECT TO BEAT THESE MACHINES INTO SUBMISSION / OBLIVION OR GIVE ME SOME HELPFUL / INSIGHTFUL HINTS ... Please. Oh, please. Please. Help me!

Cannot display x11 applications on server back to my mac running x11

Something has happened recently and I can no longer display x11 application windows running on a large SGI Server back to my mac. I am connecting via a x11 xterm window with ssh. Prior to logging onto the sgi, I add it to my xhost list with a xhost + command and get the return that the machine was being addd to the access control list. I then log onto the server with ssh or ssh -Y, set the env variable DISPLAY to my mac. I then try a simple xclock to display the clock, and get a "cannot open display display" error. IP's are correct, env variables are set right. 3 weeks ago I had no problems, but now I do. Unfortunately, I remember two security updates and 10.4.6 have been installed since I last used X11. Can anyone help?

   Ah, data; that helps! You don't have to delete all of those options. The one that disrupts connections made by setting the display on the remote machine is the nolisten_tcp option. If you set that to 0 or "no", your apps can connect directly to the window server on your machine via tcp.
   However, that doesn't apply to a secure shell tunnel. I don't know what happens between-the-sheets but maybe secure shell negotiates with XWindows directly because the above setting doesn't affect the ability to do window forward through a secure shell tunnel. Of course for that you have to have "X11Forwarding yes" in the sshd_config file on the server and you're supposed to have the "ForwardX11 yes" set in the ssh_config file on the client, although I've gotten by without the latter. After that, all you have to deal with is X11 itself, or more specifically, the X11 Security Extension.
   Newer versions of X11, such as the one that ships with Tiger, have an operative Security Extension. Thus, they have more stringent requirements of dangerous applications. I don't really know how to deal with it outside of SSH but again OpenSSH will handle the negotiation for you if you use the "-Y" option instead of the -X option.

Displaying X11 applications on multiple monitors same Mac

I have an iMac 20 with an external monitor. I can easily display any Mac OSx app window except X11 app windows such as xterm, xeyes, xman, etc. on the external monitor. Any clues?

nols_geek: The issue is the same as yours. I can push X objects almost completely to the second screen as long as a few points remain on the first for grabbing. I cannot push the entire window to the second screen nor can I reference/point to any portion of the window that is in the second screen. I can only reference/point to objects on the first screen. For static displays, it is okay but the Xapp is non-functional on the second screen. Thanks for the open issues lists, do you have a incident/ticket number that you are referencing?
Bill: No, sorry to scare you into thinking there might be good X documentation out there .I did not find an X man page for 10.5, dumping the X static usage is all I found.
The key information I was referencing was the output of the xdpyinfo command. I used the X man page for 10.4 I gleaned from Huntsville Mac Users' Group (hmug.org) to define the format of the DISPLAY variable and whether it should be :1 or ".1". This backed up the format of the output of the xdpyinfo which stated both screens were working and defined the features for both screens for the display variable and these matched the display preferences defined in the System preferences application. 1=1
So to test this, I tried xeyes with the display variable set to the first screen. If the mouse pointer did not move, there is no system CPU activity for the application. If I moved the mouse pointer a lot for a minute, there were a few tenths of a second of CPU activity monitor. I received similar results with the same exercise on the second screen.
I really want to use both monitors. My second monitor is somewhat smaller than my built in 20" screen, so I really don't want the second display over the internal screen and reverting to 10.4 is not desired since other 10.5 benefits have a higher priority than this incident.

Brand new 11 inch Mac book air, having major difficulties

Hi, I've been told by 3 reps at an authorized Mac dealer and computer repair company what I needed to buy to back up my information. It's not working. I spoke to 2 people at Applecare who seemed to not know what they are talking about. The "Help" answers on the Mac itself do not work and one applecare tech sent me an article that failed to address the issues because it seems that I can only use fireware to transfer with migration assistant and the air doesn't have a firewire port. The Macbook air won't read my BRAND NEW Glyph external drive, nor will mogration assistant and I'd rather not drop and drop every bit of infobecause it won't emulate the way my old Mac looked and I may lose certain folders in say, Aplle Mail, Itunes, and iPhoto and it will an incredibly long time to remedy that. Through research of my own said I could transfer Mac to Mac with a USb Ethernet adapter, however Applecare says it's impossible without firewire ports. She also said that to use migration assistant I'd have to create a new user and login as the other user rather than the one I created when i turned on the new machine, which seems crazy to me. I have done nothing at all on the Macbook air yet except for turn it on an run set-up assistant--why is it impossible to use migration assistant on your current username when there's absolutely nothing on the new Air at this point and I'd like to keep my current user and profile. Any suggestions? Could desperately use the help since my former Mac could die any moment. They also said using wifi or airport will not work. Thank you all!
I addition, does anyone find the mac usb ethernet adapter useful after this initial transfer--if that even works? I'm not sure what it's useful for after my transfer. Haven't used ethernet in a zillion years.

I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X. The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar: Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.

Having major difficulties with sound in FCE-HD

I am trying to export a couple of sequences to send off to a friend. I've tried sending it to iDVD as well as sending to print to video. When I play it on the computer as a quicktime movie every track is there for the audio ( 6)
When I print to video to a dvc tape. All 6 tracks are there. When I then tried to record to a dvd on a dvd deck I only have 2 tracks of audio. Same with iDVD. Is there a button I didn't push. Did I push a button I shouldn't have? These are the questions I need answered. What have I done wrong. ANY help or SUGGESTIONS would be greatly APPRECIATED.

Can not start remote X11 application by SSH

Hi All,
I'm now encountering a problem of starting remote X11 application from my iMac to an IBM server by SSH.
I login into the IBM server by this command: ssh -X -Y username@ibmserver, then I start an xterm, but I get an error message like this:
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: 10.32.12.149:0
However, I can start an 'xterm' using the same command to login into a Linux server (OpenSSH_4.3p2, OpenSSL 0.9.8e-fips-rhel5).
The SSH version of IBM SSH server is:
OpenSSH_3.7.1p2-pwexp26_krb5, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0.9.6m
and the SSH version in iMac is:
OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8l.
Is this the problem of the SSH version?
Can anybody give me some hints?

Do you have your own DISPLAY environment variable defined in as part of your IBM server login?
When using ssh -X (or ssh -Y; you only need one or the other), your DISPLAY on the remote system (IBM) should look like:
localhost:10
localhost:11
localhost:12
etc...
It should NOT have an IP address.
The above is my best guess.
The other less likely possibility is that you have created your own DISPLAY environment variable on your Mac, however, while that could screw up X11 usage with your Mac, it should NOT cause the error you specified to have anything other than "localhost:nnn". Anyway, your Mac's DISPLAY environment variable should look like
/tmp/launch-5cbXzq/org.x:0
And is created by Mac OS X when you login. You do not need to do anything.

For reasons that you would have to ask Apple for they decided not to allow the precise position of the playhead to be shown in iMovie 10 (unlike in FCP 10.1.x).

This issue can be caused by the Babylon Toolbar 1.1.8 extension
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I have created a navigation system on the master pages and set the presentation to links only mode. I also have other links scattered throughout the program, like a linkable table of contents, etc. Some of them work, some of them don't. Not sure why. Anyone out there having similar issues? Or have any idea on how I can solve this issue? Any help would be appreciated!

Links should not create any problems in Keynote. If they are set up correctly on text, the text will be underlined. Objects that have links will have a curved arrow bottom right, if you click the arrow a popup will display the link information.
Try this repair for Keynote, ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:

delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application

empty the trash: Finder > Empty Trash

Shut down your Mac, wait 30 seconds, then power on the Mac, immediately after the start chime, hold down the Shift key
When you see the grey Apple symbol and progress indicator (a spinning gear), release the Shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, then hold down the Shift key again as you click Log in.

Let the Mac fully boot up, it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive

when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive then First Aid tab and click repair disc permissions

when complete, restart the Mac normally, Apple menu > Restart

Accessing Applications Remotely

Is accessing computer applications remotely a reality? I have several apples with airport and can access the computer and move files and folders but have never been able to access an application remotely. I have check USERS & SHARING and do not find where it allowes running applications remotely. Am I missing something? If so what am I missing, and in simple terms how do I set this up.

PS. Thanks to all those who responded to my request on how to extract video from DVD's. Handbrake quickens the time to do this compared to using iMovie. Those DVD's are all my home movies not the retail stuff by the way.

That is a different issue.
I was talking about the fact an Application does not have to be in the Application Folder of the computer you are using.
Basically it will set up files and the like on your current computer even if you access the Application via File Sharing.
What you are proposing is running the app on the Original computer with access to the files it has already created but seeing it on your Display (Screen Sharing).
On the computer that will be Host go to System Preferences > Sharing and turn On Screen Sharing.
You may want to set an Account Name and a Password to access this if doing it over the internet.
It will still ask you to access the computer from your current computer with an Account on the Host and it's password.
LAN based access.
Lets say the computer in question appears in the Shares section of the Finder.
You have two ways to start what can be referred to and the Finder's Screen Sharing.
1) using the item in the Shares the window will show "Connecting" and give options to Screen Share and Connect As.
I am already connected in this Pic (Standard File Sharing)
Using the Screen Sharing Button will launch this icon and bring up the Dialogue box
the default User Name will be the Account on the current computer.
You will need to change this to the account you are going to Log in on to the other computer with.
And fill in the password.
2) Finder > Go Menu > Go to Server and enter VNC:// (instead of AFP or SMB) in front of the IP address.
It is greyed out in this pic as I already have that dialogue box open
Using the Connect button will bring up the App icon in the Dock and the Dialogue box again.
Having singed on to the other computer then you will get a Window showing the Desktop (or any open app window)
Here in this Pic I have clicked the Applications Folder's icon in the Dock
The window is not the "front" one because when it is the CMD+Shift+4 works on the MacBook Pro and it is not grabbing shots on this computer.
You can do the same from a remote location.
However the IP used is then the Public IP and the routing device has to then point the request to the Host computer.
iChat and/or Messages Screen Share can get around the User Name and Password issues and the router processes.
However the iChat Auto Accept does not work in it's current form for Screen Shares.
One thing.
This Process via iChat/Messages or the Finder is like using that computer as if you were there.
If it happens that there is also a person already using it they can't continue doing what they were doing.
The iChat/Messages version does include a Audio Chat alongside so it is great for remote Help.

Having major issues with InDesign CS6. Not only is it crashing, but it is corrupting the existing file. Then when I relaunch, it is not allowing me to open the file again.
In another instance, yesterday I opened an file created 3 months ago and it allowed me to make changes, however I could not save them to the existing file, or not even to a new name.
I had to copy each layer on each page to create a new document. NOT GOOD!!! Just saw that ADOBE has an update for InDesign. WILL THIS FIX THE PROBLEM??

Yes, I would certainly get the latest update. That we often solve issues like these, for this is not normal. Some further tips would be quite InDesign, then to trash your InDesign preferences and then re-start InDesign (it will rebuild them again). Some further areas to look into would be:
* Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)
* Corrupt Image(s)
* Power Failures (power surges)
* Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page
* Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server

Using X11 application as default for file type?

Hello,
I wanted to know if it's possible to set an X11 application as default application to open a certain file type.
I tried the "open with" option on a file type, but the X11 application I wanted to associate to was unavailable (impossible to select) in the file explorer window.

Unix executables are not usually "visible." "Standard" OS X applications use the ".app" extension, but Unix executables do not. I suspect that's why you are having the problem. Making the association through OS X may not be possible.

X11 and X11 applications won't start

I seem to be having a problem getting the X11 application, which I installed from the 'optional installs' package on the OS X installation DVD, working. I originally posted this elsewhere, but was advised to post it here, where people familiar with X11 might be able to help.
I'll just quote what I posted elsewhere below, and hopefully someone can help.
I seem to be having a problem with the X11 utility, which I installed off of the OS X DVD (from the 'optional installs' package), and a problem with The Gimp, both of which i think are probably related.
Well I installed The Gimp a while ago, aswell as the X11 program, and both worked fine (you probably already know that The Gimp needs X11 to run). But at some point, it suddenly stopped working. I think it may have been after an update, but I really can't remember.
The problem I was having with The Gimp is that it would go to start up, but just after the X11 icon appeared in the dock, the cursor would change to an X for a few seconds. The splash screen would come up, but it didn't even appear to have a background or progress bar or anything, and didn't do anything.
At that point, just running X11 on it's own, or OpenOffice.org worked fine.
Well recently, i've tried to run The Gimp again, and something different happens. The X11 icon comes up and starts bouncing in the dock, but after a few seconds, it closes again, and The Gimp tells me that it needs X11 to run (which I already have of course).
When I try to run X11 on it's own, the same thing happens. The icon comes up in the dock, starts bouncing, then goes again.
I've used the Console program in the Utilities folder, and both times, for both problems (when The Gimp had the funny splash screen and wouldn't start, when it wouldn't start up at all, and when X11 wouldn't start), I get the same few lines which might help, these are below:

So now, I have The Gimp that doesn't work, X11 that doesn't work, and OpenOffice.org doesn't work either (same problem where X11 quits), which is rather annoying, since I could do with using The Gimp.

Wanting to install GIS software (Grass GIS) it appears to require X11 application. Found the refence in Machelp to the topic on the Apple site. However, it doesn't provide a link to the actual software, just states it is on the Install disc. Indeed, there is a package on the install disk (under Xcode Tools/Packages) called X11SDK.pkg. I thought that this might be the required app, but after installation of the Xcode tools the Grass software still doesn't function (start-up screen only and error message indicating that there is no X11 found).
Thus the question is: how do I properly install the X11 app and where do I find the software?
I hope that someone can help me out (as the AppleCare helpdesk doesn't seem to function today). Many thanks in advance.

Anyone else having major issues with 1.1.4?

So I updated to Firmware 1.1.4 a day or two after it came out and I've been having major issues. This is on a phone purchased on launch day that has not been jailbrokened or hacked in anyway.
Battery life...when the phone actually works, is down drastically. I went from 2.5 days with Bluetooth and Wi-fi on to about 12 hours at one time.
Wi-fi...when it works, just cuts in and out even when the signal should be all full strength.
Clock...even though it is set to sync with network time, can be accurate one minute and lags behind as much as 15 minutes.
I've done numerous restores, both from a backup file and setting the phone up as a new phone. Nothing seems to fix the problem so far. Has anyone else run into these issues and/or know of how to fix it.
I was contemplating downgrading the firmware to 1.1.3, but I don't believe there is an official way to do it.
Any input would be appreciated.

I have exactly the same issues, After the Update the sound quality of my calls dropped drastically! I tought first I got a cold or something like that...but it was not I cannot hear as clearly as I used to before and increasing the volume does not solve anything!
I also noticed that trsitionning from an application to another and especially using the home button to got to home page is getting slower. I need more time to lose safari and go to emails than before.
My Memory usage is exactly the same as I havent added anything to my library or so. Aroud 3.5 GB free.
Anyone with same symptoms?

Pass info from safari to X11 application

I am wanting to pass some data from a web page (viewed using Safari) to an X11 application and I was wondering if anyone can suggest how to do this ?
The data in question is ascii text and represents a script which is passed to a molecule viewer (rasmol running under X11) which then displays the appropriate molecule. The web server sending the data gives it a unique mime type. The X11 program needs to be invoked from the command line to specify the name of the script file which is sent. Under other unixs (IRIX and Linux FC3) it is possible to have the browser activate a shell script which sends the text to a temporary file, then executes the X11 program. I have the shell script set up but can't assign the mime type for it (I tried RCDefaultApp which won't allow the selection of a shell script in its mime type setup). I've also tried this with FireFox 1.5 but it doesn't seem like the mac version handles the passing of data like it does on Linux. Any other suggestions ?

Hmm, I doubt you'll be able to what you want directly from Safari.
Do you have to interact with the data via the browser beforehand, or could you just pass the url pointing to the data to a command line tool like curl instead?
I'm a little fuzzy exactly what workflow you're after so apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick
