HD AVI FILE Compatibility

HD AVI FILE Compatibility
I am working with a company to have our family home movies (8mm & super 8mm) from the 50’s-70’s and 35mm color slides restored and transferred onto a digital format
(DVD archive and digital HD-AVI files saved on an external Western Digital 1T hard drive with ESATA, USB 2, and Fire Wire 800 ports)
We would like to have the ability to work with/edit the HD-AVI files to eliminate unwanted footage and be able to make our own HD DVD movies or post onto an online library for family members to download or view.
This will be a very expensive restoration project and we are considering an IMac or
Mac Pro purchase to do the editing of the HD-AVI files and to copy & burn copies from the DVD archive set.
Is the HD-AVI format our best choice…????

I agree and go for the Mac Pro if you're looking to do serious video work. You may be able to get away with the consumer video processing products like iMove, iDVD, Toast as the jump to Final Cut Pro is quite steep.
It's not clear from your post whether you are a current Mac user as you describe yourself as a rookie. The Mac is definitely the way to go for such video work but I wouldn't jump in blind. You are looking to splash some serious money here and its not quite as easy as Mac Pro vs iMac, Final Cut vs iMovie. You need to consider memory and disk configuration and backup strategy etc.
I would definitely recommend a visit to an Apple store or maybe even preferably an authorise Apple dealer where you can sit down for as much time as you need to discuss what you need in hard/software and also for training if needed.
Making things available via the web is also one of your possible requirements so you also need to think of such things as web hosting/MobileMe etc
Sounds an exciting project. I'm currently going through the process of migrating all of our digital video over to my Mac Pro which is obviously not as daunting as moving from film. I'm using iMovie HD which is managing to suit my needs at the moment but I can see a time when I will want to make the jump to Final Cut.
Best of luck

  • Import of AVI files

I did a search and can see this has been discussed before, but it's still not clear to me how I can solve it. My camera produces video clips in .AVI format. I can play in quicktime, I can import and edit in iMovie HD, but the files won't import in iMovie 08. What can I do? I saw some suggestion to get visual hub. Is this the best/only solution?
Anyway, I find it amazing that Apple would make an update of iMovie that won't import old iMovie HD projects. What if Microsoft updated word so it cannot edit old documents?

My camera produces video clips in .AVI format. I can play in quicktime, I can import and edit in iMovie HD, but the files won't import in iMovie 08.
Basically, there are three levels of compatibility here -- playback, conversion, and edit:
    1) Some files (like MPEG-1) can be played by QT applications but cannot be properly converted to other formats (e.g., MPEG-1 loses its audio) or be edited (requires an MPEG based "engine") since data is synchronized spatially using blocks of audio data interspersed with blocks of video data in a single data stream while QT requires parallel streams of data synchronized temporally.
    2) Other files (like an AVI with M-JPEG video and DVI ADPCM audio) are conversion compatible. That is they can both be played by QT application and converted to other compression formats by them but cannot be edited. Contrary to what you seem to think, your files are not edited in iMovie HD as AVI. Instead, they are converted to DV as part of the import process and are edited as such. On the other hand, iMovie '08 edits in a number of "native" compression formats and assumes you will only import compatible compression formats so it does not perform an automatic conversion to any of the possible edit compatible formats as it doesn't know which one you may wish to use, what settings you would prefer, or how much time you are willing to invest for a return in terms of quality.
    3) Lastly, out of the hundreds or even thousands of possible audio/video compression combinations, on a few can be edited at the frame level. (I.e., iMovie is a frame level editor not a GOP (Group of Pictures), "muxed" content editor. For instance, if your digital camera saved its AVI file using M-JPEG video and say Unsigned Integer audio, your file would be edit compatible in their AVI container and import without a problem (or at least they used to do so).
Or, can I use QT pro? The problem with that is there is no trial. So, I might buy it and then it does not work for me,
It would as long as you have the proper decode component installed whether Perian, DivX, 3ivX, from your digital camera manufacturer, etc. But why spend the money if you don't have to? You can always download the free MPEG Streamclip utility which accesses the same QT components and QT structure embedded in the Mac OS as QT Pro.

  • AVI file format

    Hello
At this moment I use Adobe Premiere Pro, but in the future I want to use Final Cut Studio. Now I make avi file in Microsoft DV format. Is this also possible in FCS ? Al the file that I create in FCS are later used in Premiere Pro, so there must be some kind of compatibility. Those anyone know how compatible FCS is with Premiere Pro
    Thanks in advance
    Tonnie
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You'll have no problems making the switch. All the normal codecs - DV, Uncompressed 10-bit, etc, all work perfectly in both applications.
You can easily make AVI's, but not directly from within FCS. All you have to do is export your finished movie and transcode it in a third-party app. A good one is VisualHub, it's $23 shareware. But as I said, you won't need these to move media between Premiere and FCS.

  • AVI files with iDVD??

There are many different CODECS used to compress the video in .AVI files - some are Mac QT compatable - some are not.
I have a small digital movie camera that produces .AVI files compresed in DivX format. Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.4 and QuickTime 7, the ONLY way I have found to use these files in iMovie/iDVD is to convert them to DV stream files using ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
To find out the form of video compression used in your .AVI files, open one in QuickTime and select Window>Show Movie Info. What video format is shown?

  • DV-NTSC File Compatability

AVI files captured from my Sony DV cameras with OnLocation cannot be opened by mplayer, virtualdub, mediacoder, stoik and many other programs. The selected recording AVI type (T1,T2 or quicktime) doesn't matter. For a T2 type, GSpot reports the codec name as DVC/DV Video and confirms that the codec is installed. It is also able to render the video using MS rendering. It does fail to render using GSpot codec solutions on the DivxDemux process. I have no idea what this really means or if this is related to the compatability issue with the programs mentioned. I'm trying to find a software solution to batch compress these AVI files, preferably keeping them as AVI, but with reduced resolution. Note that if I capture from the same setup to an AVI using Windows Movie Maker, everything is compatable.
So what is OnLocation doing differently and why?
How can I get my OnLocation files to be compatable?
Any suggestions to batch compression software other than what I've tried?

OnLocation records standard AVI and Quicktime files. We test compatibility extensively in other Adobe apps, and we spot test all formats in other NLEs as well as WMP and QuickTime. We don't specifically test in GSpot or Vdub, but we do on occasion use those tools, and have never had a problem with them playing clips out of OnLocation. I'm unfamiliar with the other apps you cite.

  • No longer plays AVI files

Since the update QT no longer plays my AVI files. The app hangs up and has to be force quit. It also winds up my computer like a jet plane, which even Photoshop does not do. I already paid for the patch to play my mpeg2 files, what do I need to do to get my AVI files back?

What are the codecs for the files that aren't playing properly?
(open the movie in quicktime - press Command + I to get the "movie inspector" window - there should be a section called "format" with details of the compression codec used and the pixel sizes and stuff.
I have noticed the latest version of quicktime (7.4.1) has lost some of its backwards compatability - i have a load of old tutorial videos that were AVIs using the msvideo1 CRAM codec - they opened fine in quicktime under Tiger (still do in fact on our Tiger machine) - but now on Leopard quicktime can no longer decode the video so you get a big white screen.
Yet another reason to avoid Leopard? - there are so many things that USED to work fine and no longer do...... smb access, quicktime, exchange access via safari.......
Sad really - as I said in posts elsewhere - can it be long before we no longer have "software updates" and switch to be truly microsoft and call them "service packs"!
    Robert
P.S. In the end i managed to get my video working by using ffmpeg (great app if you have a little knowledge of what you're doing to re-encode the video - nothing else I could find anywhere would play it!)

  • .avi files crash finder and quicktime player after Flip4Mac component mess

The .avi files that are downloaded directly from my camera cause the finder to crash as it tries to preview, they will cause Quicktime Player to quit unexpectedly, and Final Cut Pro will see them as corrupt. The files still open in VLC so I know they aren't corrupt.
I think this may have happened because the stupid 'Flip4Mac' program suggested that I remove some conflicting components. I accidentally lost them and I'm not sure which ones they were.
I tried re-installing Quicktime 7.20, but that didn't seem to do it. Does anybody know which components I should be looking to re-install? Maybe the ones that commonly go with FCP and Quicktime? Or does anyone know which components Flip4Mac will identify as conflicting?

    http://perian.org for your AVI files.
Remove any browser plug-in that has an x in it's name as Perian replaces them (with better compatibility).
I don't use Flip4Mac but what I've read about it suggests it is used by WMP formats (not AVI).
AVI was invented by Microsoft and they discontinued the container nearly ten years ago.

  • I have been asked to provide AVI Files?

I have just finished 16 videos of a band playing live synced to music, the band have asked if i can provide AVI files. Could anyone help with this please.
I originally provided them with Quicktime H.264 on a hard drive and a full DVD. Plus iI phone versions.
    Many thanks,
    Mac.

AVI is an ancient windows format.
If they are just looking for direct Windows compatibility, you can offer up WMV versions. To generate them you'll need one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac's encoder (the least expensive will work fine). The free version only reads WMV.

  • Avi files not burning to DVD

I have been exporting windows avi files from premiere cs3 to the desktop, then importing them as either assests or timelines in encore cs3. It plays fine when i preview it, but when i try to burn it to DVD, once it has finished 'transcoding', and begins to write the DVD, without fail, it finds an error in one of the timelines and stops. It says 'internal software error, line (something)'. Anyway, i keep having to go back to encore cs2 as i cant get cs3 to burn to a dvd.
If anyone can help me out at all, or has any ideas it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

You do NOT want a high burn speed... higher speed = more chance for errors
To Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

  • Have a .mp4 video and would like to use it to burn to a disc and be able to be played on a dvd player, should i use idvd or what? also have a .avi file what should i use? thanks please help

Have a .mp4 video and would like to use it to burn to a disc and be able to be played on a DVD player and a .AVI file what program should I use idvd?

iDVD may or may not work with them – depending what kind of MP4 and AVI each is.
Drag them into iDVD and preview them to check compatibility.
If there are issues, use MPEG Streamclip and re-wrap them as QuickTime.

  • AVI file the film is white and no sound.

I am wondering why a Final Cut Pro file converted to a avi file in MPEG Stream Clip 1.9.1 when opened in QT will not play ilm or audio. It appears as white clip with no sound. Yet if I open the same avi file in DivX player the film and audio plays fine. The only problem is I have not been able to find a way to export the file playing in Dvix player as either Dvix file or .avi file. I read discussions complaining that there is a compatibility issue with QT 7.4.5 and playing avi files(white screen and no sound). I saw a few people mention a open source program that claimed to be the swiss army knife solution. But, discussion about their open source program also had a lot complaints. The whole purpose of the avi files is to play video in a 3-D Studio Max environment.
My options seem to be either trash QT 7.4.5 and download a earlier version of QT. Will this work? And if so what QT version? Or find another codec file source that will convert smoothly from Final Cut Pro to a 3-D Studio Max environment. I visited the components link at Apples website. But, a lot of the programs would not download successfully TO MY I-MAC 3.06. I really hope you have an easy solution because I need to be converting my FCP QT.mov files to a small file size for 3-D Studio Max. I must be able to preview successfully before I upload to my partner who is building with 3-D Studio Max. I hope someone has the right answers and links for me to download a solution that works.

If you "trash" 7.4.5 (which is not the current version, 7.5 is) you will wreck Quicktime for good. You cannot remove QT as it is a component of the operating system.
Go to the quicktime folder and drag all the cruft which I am certain you have other than Apple codecs, Flip4mac and Perian 1.1 (the open source component).
That means all XVid, DivX, 3ivX AC52, drag them all to the desktop and restart.

  • Quicklook no longer working with AVi files in 10.7

    Howdy,
Mysteries abound!  Updated to 10.7, and ever since, I have been having two problems:
    1.  AVI files no longer open open using QuickLook; all I get is is the AVI icon, and the "Open in VLC" button.
    2.  The icon preview for AVI files is no longer displayed as well; only the generic VLC icon shows (and yes, I have the "Show icon preview" box cheeked in the Finder preferences).
Is anyone else having the same problem?  Does anyone know how to remedy this?  Thanks in advance! (^_^)

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.

  • Playing inserted avi files in Adobe Acrobat 9 or later

A user has inserted avi files into Adobe and it always worked up to version 8.1.
Any version later than that, the avi files will not play anymore.
Is there any way to make them play or will all his files need converted to another source?
Converting them all to a different format would be quite the task as there are many videos involved.
    Thanks, Jeff

I used to be able to open .avi files in Photoshop just fine, but I’ve just tried opening one again after a couple of months and I can’t. It’s just black blankness. I have no problem with .mp4 files, but unfortunately, most of the videos I'm trying to make gifs out of are in .avi format.
