HD failure with neither time machine back-up or OSX install working

Hi,
I recently had the OEM HD fail on my Mac book pro resulting in the blinking folder question mark on startup. I purchased a new intel SSD to replace it and it installed it in the laptop. I then performed the command + r on boot and went through the system recovery from network. This seemed to be working fine at first and I was able to open the disk utility after load, I created a single partition on the SSD and then was able to verify successfully. I then closed this window and tried to restore from a time machine back up on an external hard drive. About 30 seconds after it started, it returned an error saying that it was unsuccessful and to restart the computer. I accepted and then it rebooted.
I power cycled the system and again tried the command + r on reboot. This time I first erased the new SSD from the disk utility and then proceeded to create the partition. This time I tried the option to load the OSX and did not plug in the external HD. It began to download from the network and looked to be working fine. However, at some point about 1.5-2 hours later it looks like the system reset itself and came up with the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I power cycled the system for a third time to check the disk again it gives a white screen and command + r does not do anything. I tried resetting the PRAM which the system responded to the option+ command+ p+r and rebooted but it still returns to this white screen. In order to check if it was the SSD that was the problem I opened the computer again and disconnected the SATA cable from the SSD. Then with the SSD disconnected at boot I was able to attempt a system recovery from network using the command + r.
Does anyone have any advice or did I just end up ruining the $200 SSD?
Thanks in advance.

Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
[1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
[3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
[8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
Code:
ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
Code:
wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
Code:
sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works

  • Merge my new MBPr data with old time machine back up

Got a new Macbook Pro retina, can I merge my old data (from my old imac using time machine ) with my new macbook retina data without loosing data from my MBPr?
I used my MBPr during holidays without having the opportunity to restore my backup from my old imac and now I have information/data I do not want to loose. If I just restore my back up from time machine (of my old imac) won't I loose any new information on my MBPr that I have not backed up (e.g iphoto or imovie data) ?
PS: I havent yet backed up my MBPr as I am afraid of overriding my old imacs back up

Put all of your data from your 'old' user into your Shared folder - accessible by any user. Then you can copy it into your new user folder(s) and delete the old user if you wish.
    Good luck,

  • HT201250 My hard drive had to be replaced. I am restoring it with my time machine back up, but it is still (after 30 minutes) "looking for other sources" is this normal?

My hard drive was replaced. I am using time machine to restore. It is about 40 minutes into the procedure and the computer is still "looking for other sources" is this normal?

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

  • How can I erase my iMac and replace with a different MacBooks time machine back up ?

I have a 2008 iMac and it's contents are backed up on my time capsule. I want to lend the iMac to my sister. She has a 2007 MacBook  that is giving her problems. Her MacBook is backed up I
On a time machine file on an external. My question is
How can I replace all the data on my iMac with her time machine back up?

Is it possible to create a new user log in on my iMac and have all the info from my sisters time machine file transfer? Then the iMac would have two users me and her?

  • Time machine back up failing after itunes update

I am having a massive problem with my Time Machine back up.
My set up is as follows
late 2011 Macbook Pro 13" running latest version of Yosemite
An older Airport Extreme running version 6. something (latest version)
Macbook connected via WiFi on the 5Ghz
Connected via USB to the Airport Extreme is a Western Digital 2TB hard Drive.
My last successful back was 5.40pm on 1st February 2015. The only changes to the system that have been done since that time is an updated to the latest iTunes version.
    This is what is happening.
Time machine shows the disc as connected and that there is 905GB of 2TB avaialble.
When the back up starts it finds the disk, prepares the back up and than starts.
It states the back up is about 29GB in size (so more than enough room on the hard drive).
The back up begins and after about 10 minutes (or somewhere around 4 or 5 GB) the back up fails and a pop up window in top right hand corner comes up saying that the back up has failed as there is not enough room on the Time Machine Backup (that is what I have called the drive).
I have run it a number of times and always the same thing.
I have run a disk utility check on the hard drive and run a repair disk and veriofy disk and both stated that there drive was fine with no problems.
I have powered down the entire network, shut the computer down and rebooted the whole thing but still the same problem.
I can't think of anything else I can do. Any suggestions from anyone greatly appreciated.

Problem solved. Can't remember what I did though!

  • Setting Up a New Mac From Two Different Time Machine Back-ups?

    Greetings Apple People,
I am planning on getting a new iMac. Right now my wife I are still using our separate MacBooks from college. Both of them have Time Machine back-ups. We would like to setup our new iMac to have two different users. Is it possible to setup each of the users on the new iMac from our respective Time Machine back-ups?
I know you can do this seamlessly with one Time Machine back-up, but can you do it from two different back-ups, essentially merging the two, while keeping the separate user profiles?
    Thanks!

Follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using one computer as the source on first boot. Then, hook up the second computer and use the Migration Assistant to transfer the second user account and nothing else. Don't use the TM backup because it's much slower doing it that way than directly from each machine.

  • Mountain Lion causing apps not to work, how can I downgrade to Lion without Time Machine Back-up?

Since installing Mountain Lion, I have found applications that don't work.  I want to go back to Mountain Lion, unfortunately I had trouble with my Time Machine back up hard drive a couple days after installing Mountain Lion and I don't have any back up to work from.  Tried to go to App Store and redownload Lion from there under purchases, but I got message that said "You can’t upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed."
I have another mac that I can download the Lion install package to and then drag it over to this computer, so the question is, Will I be able to re-install Lion over the upgraded Mountain Lion without any problems?

  • Transfer Time machine back up to new device

    Dear,
Could anyone help me to solve the problem with transfering time machine back up to the new hard drive,
I am facing the problem " If the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended but without journaling, OS X may state that "the volume has the wrong case sensitivity" to be used as a back up disk."
Does anyone know how to solve it
    Thanks in advance

Well I'm not sure the tm backup will install/copy to the new drive without the case-sensitive format. Actually that is a poor format to use as it can cause problems down the road with installing software and other things. Not sure why your original drive was formatted like that. It really is not a recommended format. Not sure why apple still makes it available. If the tm backup won't load then you'll need to repartition and format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled Case-sensitive) which is also a option in disk utility.

  • Restoring a Lion Time Machine back-up to a Mountain Lion iMac.

I have a Time Machine back-up that was backed up on an iMac running Lion.  I'm now buying a new iMac and it will be running Mountain Lion.  Will this cause a problem if I try to restore my new computer with my time machine back up that was done using Lion?  Do I need to do anything before I plug in the backup?  I can’t update my old iMac because it died and Apple said it would cost several hundred dollars to fix it.

    Nick,
Thank you for the reply.  I’m a relatively simple MAC user.  I don’t do a lot of stuff on my Mac other than pictures, videos and documents… simple things.  Very little third party stuff was on my Mac.
When I booted my old machine I know there was a screen asking for me if I want to use a time machine back up to transfer data to my new iMac, at least there was in Lion.  I used that feature when the HDD went bad in my old iMac.  It was very easy.  Do you know if I can use that same feature or do I have to do something special because it is a different OS?  I don’t want to go back to Lion.  I just want to make sure it will recover my old stuff easily.
    Again.  Thank You!

  • Time machine back-up: software

    Hi everyone,
I'm setting up Time Machine to back up my MBA.  I just have a quick question:
In the event that I have to ever use a back-up to do a full restore, will this include all the software that is currently on my Mac?  If I am switching to a new laptop and wish to move everything to the new one, is it possible to do this with a Time Machine back-up?  If I delete everything from my old laptop, will I be able to re-install all the software without repurchasing another product key?
Specifically, the software I purchased are: Parallels, Microsoft Office 2011 and Windows 8 (to use on Parallels).
If you know the answer to this question or have tips on the process for doing this, I would be very grateful.
    Thank you!

Also,  can you clarify what you mean by 'it is not bootable'?
It means that you cannot use it to boot up your computer.
With a bootable clone, you can - you start up and hold the Option key and the Startup Manager will show you which disks are available for booting - your clone should show, so you choose that and boot up.
By install the OS first and then port over my files, do you mean by using the 'migration assistant' as opposed to the 'install with a disk' option?  There is nothing I would like to 'exclude' or change so would just starting the process with the disk to begin with, as opposed to using the 'migration assistant', be the better option?
Not sure what you mean with the "disk"? I am referring to your external drive which has your backup. You can actually also use your old Mac and connect them using target disk mode (that is what I've always used):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13842
Personally, I've found that the easiest way.
When you first turn on your new Mac, you can use the Setup Assistant which is by far the easiest way to port over files - you need to follow the onscreen instructions and connect the two machines. If you wait until later, it will be Migration Assistant and it will create a second user account for the transfers because you've already created one. You will then need to deal with getting rid of duplicates.
I don't have to 'de-activate' anything on my old laptop, right?
Yes, you do. You need to de-authorize it in iTunes and you need to wipe it and reinstall the original system before selling it as anything you've obtained at the app store is tied to your Apple ID and not transferable.

  • Time Machine back-up disk too small

Recently I had to restore my system from a Time Machine back-up, all seemed to work fine. Now I have a situation where time machine gives me an error when I attempt a back up, saying there's not enough free space on the back-up drive. The drive I'm backing up is max 500megs, the external BU drive is a TB. I fixed all the prefs but it seems as though Time machine is not deleting old files from my BU drive to make room for new ones. Any ideas?

Hi, I have the same problem.
My backup drive (G-Tech Q 500Gb) has 465Gb of space and my Pro has only 434Gb,
Your backup drive is much too small. To work well (and keep a reasonable number of backups for you), TM usually needs roughly 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. See item #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
yet when I tried to update it says I still need 63Gb of space??? I downloaded the Time Machine buddy recommended here, the message said that some old copies were deleted but still need 64Gb, only had 40Gb.
Did I miss something? should I just wipe my G-Tech and try again?
Short-term, probably. Without the actual messages, we can only speculate, but most likely you've made a lot of changes or for some other reason TM is trying to back-up about 54 gb (the 64 includes about 20% extra for workspace). Copy and post the TM Buddy messages here and we can be sure.
Long-term, you need a bigger drive.
