HD formatting woes

I just purchased a Western Digital 1TB drive (which I assume is made up of 2 500GB drives?) and am having troubles formatting it for my Mac. It came formatted as MS-DOS I believe, and when I went to initialize it as MacOS Extended Journaled in Disk Utility, it gives me the following message next to the erase progress bar:
newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk4s1: partition size is not a multiple of 4k.
and the progress bar just keeps scrolling with no indication to any progress .. i have left it like this not knowing whether or not i should force quit. advice would be very appreciated!! thanks

If this is a single drive (which it probably is) then here's what you need to do:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If there are in fact two drives, then you will need to disable the RAID array and repeat the above on both drives. Then re-create the RAID.

Hard Drive file format woes

I bought a LaCie portable hard drive and like the idiot I am I was so excited about freeing up space I recorded a bunch of my files onto the portable. Without Mac-formatting it! Now I have a bunch of files I can't seem to access because they were recorded on the drive with the IBM formatting. So now i have a bunch of those little dark rectangles that I can't even get to by using Parallel.
They say Unix Executable when I Info them.
Anyone know how I can convert them back.

Do you know what each of the files is, glen?
Simply adding the appropriate suffix to the file names may get you access to them. (ie ".txt" for a text file; ".doc" for a word file etc.)
If not , have a look at the thread at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=81361 for a discussion of the usual means of "revealing" their identity etc.

Another newbie MS to Mac convert - AW formating woes

Ok.. seasoned Microblows user, finally converted over to the "right" side. Trying to see how much I can do on my new G5 without compromising my ability to work with the MS crowd.
I have noticed that appleworks has incredible potential.. but I am still having basic formatting incompatibility with things like bullet points and indents when I save as a .doc.
Is this normal? I expected issues with tables and indexes.. but not with simple bullets and indents.
Can someone assist? PS... Pages on the other hand does an excellant job of pdf 'n and MS exports with ZERO formatting issues.
Before I buy Pages.... is there help for Appleworks that Im missing.?

You're not missing anything. Pages is a superior word processor to AppleWorks' word processing module. And as Barry notes, AppleWorks's will eventually be superseded by iWork.
NB AppleWorks can save PDF as well as Pages can. Pages just uses Mac OS X's inbuilt PDF engine to create PDF files, like every other Mac OS X app does.
NBB Unless you need Pages now, you may wish to wait till January. Apple announced iWork '05 in January 2005 at MacWorld. Odds are that iWork '06 will be available then.
The question to ask yourself is will you get USD$79 value from iWork '05 between now and January. If the answer is Yes, then go for it.
And as another person notes, NeoOffice/J is a free clone of Microsoft Office and will open Word documents very well. It's based on the free OpenOffice program. However, its future is in doubt as Sun is making it difficult for the two sole developers of the application to get funding - Sun have announced they will make a native version of OpenOffice for Mac OS X, but have said so before and were unable to do so, and because it's technically difficult.

Premiere Elements 9 for Mac: import clip format woes

So, is the Mac version of PrEl 9 simply unable to import video clips in the .wmv or .avi formats, or are there some codecs or modules I can install to enable this?

The Mac version absolutely does edit DV-AVIs. In fact, it edits them natively -- just as if they were DV-MOVs.
But I doubt your editing software is creating DV-AVIs. It's likely using some proprietary codec.
There is a program called G-Spot for PCs that will show you your AVIs codec information. There is also a Mac program that will do this for free, but I don't know the name of it.
If you can find it and we can determine what the codec is for your AVIs, we may be able to figure out what to do with it or how to convert it to an editable file.
Meantime, you can try to put it in Premiere Elements, place it on your timeline and Share/Computer/MOV using the DV preset. It may convert the file into something you can use in an editing project.

Ipod Formatting Woes

Hello one and all,
Just today I had bought a 30g 2007 video Ipod from my local Pawn Shop. It was a fairly good deal, I got all the accesories and what not, and to my suprise the battery was charged and the thing turned right on..
But when I got home just a few hours ago, another thing jumped to my suprise. My Itunes was not prepared to read this new Ipod in its state. It told me i needed to reformat.. easy enough, yes?
I thought so, too. But as soon as I started to do so, an error came up. I belive it was error 1628. I restarted everything.. my comp, my Ipod, and my hopes but still I got this error.
Now I was using the oldest edition of Itunes, because the new ones would seem to mess up my songs, and I had been for a good while. This new Ipod has plenty of music allready, and I'm unsure how to rid of it.. I uninstalled my Itunes after backing up my music and still when I try to format the Ipod as part of installation I get this error..
Now I feel as if I'm far far up the deepest creek.. any help? Together I am sure we can fight this evil error 1628!

/bin/ls format woes

I have been googling until my eyes hurt but i cannot seem to find how to send long file names that contain spaces....
I am currently implementing an FTP server in java and have gotten to a point where i can send directory listings and files, however when i use WS_FTP-32 version 951130 FTP client to connect to my server, in the directory listing, all the the files/directories that have spaces are missing the first 'word' of the file. e.g.
say there is a file called "Java is Fun!.txt"
in that FTP client it is called "is Fun!.txt"
i have tried my ftp sever with Internet explorer, cuteFTP and SmartFTP and they all interpret the directory listing correctly. Is it just the WS_FTP client that is at fault or is there a special way to send long filenames via the /bin/ls method?

You should connect directly to the known server and see what commands it is sending you, then connect to your server and see the same commands and then compare the difference.
You can use a telnet client and connect to the FTP port and send the same commands an FTP client would send and see the output that the server sends you.
I used to do this to debug http problems. I connect to the http server using a telnet client connecting to the port 80.

How do you keep text box formatting data after saving and closing a PDF? (Acrobat XI)

I love that Acrobat XI has the feature "Edit Text & Images". It saves me and my company time when modifying PDFs for our clients. Though I am having some formatting woes...
When I insert a new text box into the document, I can span the entire text box from top to bottom of the page. I can type whatever I want in it and it makes it simple for editing later. Though, when I save the document, close it, and reopen it, all the text that was in one huge text box is broken out into multiple text boxes (per line of text). This makes it a pain to do any edits to the document because the text overlaps and does not wrap (different text boxes over one another). How can I stop this from happening? Is there a way to combine multiple text boxes maybe? What is the best solution to this issue? (running trial version of Acrobat XI on Win7 64-bit)

Why we have chosen not to use comments is due to the how jumbled they become on a page. We are basically going back and putting detailed annotations/footnotes (with numbered markers) to identify what portion of the page the functionality lives/exist. Comments also sometimes close so you cannot find them very easily...

Best Mac Pro Configuration for Editing

Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade my editing capabilities from a iMac G5 to a Mac Pro computer system. I pretty much want to go all out on this thing, as I don't look to upgrade again anytime soon. I will be working with a fresh copy of Final Cut Studio 2.
I was wondering, however, about what would be a good configuration for the hardware itself, more specifically the video cards that are available now.
Which video card would be the best for HD video editing and manipulation? I was thinking about just getting the most expensive one, but I have heard some video cards are made for one thing more than another, and I want to make sure that I get the right configuration the first time.
Again, money is not too much of an issue as this will be an expense for my business.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well I'll try not to be too vague here but I think it's going to be easier for me to give you a few hints but mostly talk about where to do more research.
First: Formats -
With good ol' DV, any off-the-shelf, completely stock, Mac Pro will handle it - absolutley NO sweat. Just add 1 (or more) iternal SATA drives for capturing media, and you're off to the races. HDV...this could go either way. In theory, again, a basic Mac Pro can handle this. The format's total throughput is no more than DV. However, my thought is that using straight HDV in it's "native" format can be a real pain in the butt. Cruise over the Final Cut forum and do a search for a phrase like "HDV" & "Yuck" and you'll end up with a big long list of issues. I'll not go too far into detail, but HDV is a highly compressed format with a GOP-structure. Dealing with GOP-structured media in an NLE is not pretty.
The good news is if you're even considering something like an Io HD then the HDV issues can be conquered with it. You would use the Io HD to transcode the HDV to Apple's ProRes codec on the fly. That's what the IoHD does. It's an external capture card whose form factor makes it nice and portable. So you'd come out of your camera or deck - into the Io HD - and out via firewire to your computer. The one "trick" is: you're married to ProRes. That's the one & only codec this box does. (To the best of my knowledge, that is.) Anyway, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just good to know going into it. Here's a review of the Io HD over at the creativecow.net. And by the way, if you've never hung out over there, note that it's a great resource for help. Tons of in-the-know pros hang out there.
As far as AVCHD, I'm personally not too familiar with it. I know that it too is not very intensive to deal with - per se. But the whole tapeless concept is still somewhat new and as such has it's share of "gotchas". For that I'd do a search over there on Apple's Final Cut forum. I know a search for AVCHD is going to turn up many many posts.
Regarding the RED. Again, it's so new it's got it share of workflow bumps to be aware of. (Personally, I love the concept of what this camera is all about. I checked it out and NAB and was really impressed with where they're going with it.) But for better info on that, I'd steer over to the Final Cut forum here and the Final Cut form over at the COW. Further, the camera has it's own forum over at the COW. And another great source of info is reduser.net. This camera is sweeping the industry. But it's changing the workflow quite a bit too.
Second: Processing -
As far as overall CPU power goes....Sure! A higher clock speed is basically going to be a faster machine. Here's some stats. But what's the cost? The 3.2 is faster than the 2.8. Is this worth $1600 to you? Only you can answer that question. For me: I just spent a month vacillating over a new machine purchase. I had originally "decided" months ago to get a new Mac Pro Eight 2.8. Then I thought I might save some loot and buy a G5. Then I thought, No! That's a dumb idea.... I could spend only about $600 more and get a refurb'ed 2.66 Quad core. Then I figured I could spend $800 more than that and end up - right back where I started - with a new 2.8 8-Core. So for me, the $1400 more, to go from a used G5 to a new 2.8 Octo, just made sense. But the point is: it's a completely personal decision. For me, that overall margin of money/performance made a lot of sense! On the other hand, did it make sense for me to spend $1600 more and get the 3.2 instead of the 2.8? Not at all! So only you are going to be able to decide if $1600 buys you enough of a performance hike.
Then, Extras -
Too, you're going to want to add as much RAM as you can afford. The other big question is storage. You've mentioned a spectrum of formats. On the one hand you've got your DV. Again a single SATA drive will be more than enough to capture to and playback from. But with ProRes HQ you're getting more demanding on the drives. For this, you'd want to now add, let's say, 3 more internal drives and stripe them together into a capture RAID. But you could even go up a few steps and get something like the CalDigit HD Pro and get multiple streams of HD playback with the security of a hardware-controlled RAID 5 scenario. So there's a couple of different ways to go here....However, if you start with very very fast, reliable drives, you're setting yourself to handle higher-end formats. Drive speed can be a killer. But if you start at the top you can basically head off any format woes for the future. (For a while....Nothing's completely future-proof in this game.)
Finally, Monitoring -
You've got to figure out how to look at/hear the media outside-of-the-computer. Meaning - you're going to need external monitoring equipment: Video and Audio. Again this will open more questions for you. But these items are key to your knowing what you're REALLY working with. So you really need a NTSC monitor, an audio mixer/control surface of some sort and some powered speakers. The Final Cut forums will be good places to research what others are using in these arenas.
Anyway, good luck with it all! You've already discovered a great resource: this forum. If I were you, I'd start to spend more time on the Final Cut forums. These types of queries will get solid answers over there. I'd recommend establishing the habit of performing a search when you've over there though. The chances of someone else, already asking the same thing that you're investigating, is quite high. Almost guaranteed. Enjoy!

Powershell / Scientific Notation Woes / Formatting Output to Live Excel Sheet

I have a WMI query in a script that dumps machine information to a live excel sheet.
I find when I query the model # of the machine using (this line of code from the script):
$Sheet.Cells.Item($count,4) = (Get-WmiObject win32_computersystem -ComputerName $computer).Model
The output almost always changes into Scientific Notation, because this is a typical model number : "3500-E52"
Is there a way to modify the formatting of the:
$Sheet.Cells.Item($count,4)
so that Excel uses "text" formatting for that cell? I know you can change the fonts etc... but have not been lucky in finding a powershell > excel reference
that explains how to change a cell or column's formatting beyond the basics.
I have seen recommendations to others to dump the results queries to a CSV first, and then import into Excel (which would allow a manual change of that column's format). I'm just
hoping to bypass the extra "hands on" and format more directly to a sheet in Excel.
If .csv is the best way to go, I'll muddle through it and change the code.

Paragraph format import woes...

I may be a bit rusty (almost three years of forced MS Wording, yuck) and a beginner with FM 9, so this may be entirely my own stupidity, but:
I have set up a template document with para styles, master pages etc. When I import the styles into other documents, I noticed that my heading paragraphs lose their autonumbering properties (the box is unticked, building blocks erased) as well as tab presets. Paragraph font properties and master pages on the other hand import fine.
I have tried to circumvent this problem by numerous tricks, e.g. copying text into the template document, erasing all formats before import, removing all formatting from the text before import... Even when I paste plain text into the template the formats suddenly change for no (obvious) reason. I need to focus on translation and have no time to hunt down formatting gremlins - anyone out there with a clue?

Just speculation, but I'll mention it because it caught me out a few times before I got used to it: have you checked "While updating, remove other format/layout overrides"?
Consider two documents that both contain a style :listItem*, where:
:listItem in document B [source] uses the numbering properties
:listItem in document A [target] does not use the numbering properties
I have the impression that when you import definitions from B into A, the difference between the two definitions is seen as a local override in document A and sedulously preserved – unless you select that "Remove overrides" checkbox

Format bar woes

I like the way in which the format bar changes depending on the context.
However, is there any way to change the items that appear on it? There are three different buttons that select bold/italics. This seems like a waste of screen real estate.
In particular, I'd like to get rid of the unnecessary 'character style' and 'typeface' buttons.

Top Margin Woes: Setting the "Before" Margin for Every Page in a Section

Hi,
I've scoured the forums to no avail on this one. I am trying to create a document where the text in Section 1 appears 1 inch from the top of each page and 2 inches from the top of each page in Section 2. Should be pretty straightforward, right? Please tell me it is! I'm using Pages '09 (version 4.0.5).
Right now, the document margin is set to 1 inch from the Top, so Section 1 is fine. For Section 2, when setting the Before margins after a Layout Break (in the Layout Inspector under the Layout tab), only the first page of that section gets a Before margin of 2 inches. Every page after that in Section 2 is still 1 inch from the top.
Suggested Workaround Attempted
I tried the "Move Object to Section Master" workaround, but the menu item "Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master" is disabled when performed on an "inline" object, which is what is required to force the text down from the top of each page in Section 2. Turning it into a "floating" object enables the "Move Object to Section Master" menu item, but since it is floating. the text for that section is not pushed down, the rectangle is just displayed in the background of each page in Section 2.
Any ideas on how to solve my Top margin woes would be much appreciated!

To push a text down in the text body using the clean way which means setting space after, requires that we have already a paragraph which means a chunk of text ended by a paragraph break.
It's exactly what I do.
Most of the time, we don't put a paragraph break at the end of a header so it's not a paragraph and so, we can't define the space after value.
My tip just gives it the status of paragraph allowing me to define space after the clean way. The dirty one was to insert several returns to adjust the height which I carefully rejected.
It's exactly what we discovered some months ago:
we can't set space before (above) at top of a page because there is no paragraph before (above) in the page.
As far as I know, the "Use Previous Headers and Footers" must always be set correctly. I'm remembering a thread which became huge because the OP can't understand that he had to define these properties correctly to get correct results with his captured pages.
I wish to add that at this time we don't know exactly what the OP want to achieve.
Maybe he want to move down the top of the print area and the header.
You can't do that with your tip.
With mine, I just insert a paragraph break at the beginning of the header.

Camera RAW support 2.2 update and Nikon .NEF unsupported image format

I Use a Nikon D2x and only take raw images (.NEF file)
After I update from RAW support 2.1.1 update to RAW support 2.2 update, all my raw image file (.NEF file) taken before 13th September 2006 ! would not display - In the Aperture program, if i navigate to a project / folder and clicked on a thumb nail in the browser, I get a magenta / cyan screen showing in the main viewer panel with unsupported image format. ?
This is my worst-case scenario ! - I have entrusted Aperture with all my digital images (all raw .NEF) images taken before 13th September 2006 are un accessible with camera RAW support 2.2 update installed !
I have deleted (the 2.2 update) “from” System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle and reinstall the RAW support 2.1.1 update.
* NOW I can now see all my raw Nikon .NEF images and they are now all fully functional again *.
Their is a problem with the Apple digital camera RAW support 2.2 update, it rendered the Aperture program useless to me for my older .NEF image/files (as above).
This requires a fix ASAP

Thankfully, I wasn't affected by the issue given I'm currently with Canon. There have been Canon woes in the past though.
On a side note, I never update anything until it has been out for a few weeks just to be sure. Because Aperture is such an integral component of my studio and business, I make sure everything always works before making any updates or changes - including upgrading cameras.
I'm sure the next update will fix the magenta issues.

TOC Page-size woes...

Using InDesign's (CS4) TOC generator, it generates the TOC with the proper page numbers for the book's sections, but the page size seems to be wrong. I'm using 1/2 letter size for the page, but the TOC generated appears to have been formatted for a full letter page... it looks like this...
if the pipe symbols below represent the page boundaries, the dots preceding the page numbers "wrap" to the next line... I know that it's formatting the page for a full letter size, because when I print it out, everything is alligned perfectly on a sheet of 8-1/2" x 11" paper:

Anyone out there have any idea why it's doing this ?... I created the TOC document page with a size of 1/2-letter, but the TOC generator doesn't seem to be recognizing this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It appears that you need to adjust the tab settings in the paragraph style that is being applied to the TOC entries. Make sure that only one Right-justified tab is set at the end of the text frame. If a tab extends beyond the edge of the text frame, the text will be forced to "wrap" to a new line. Sometimes it helps to clear all the tabs and then start over if multiple and unneeded tabs have been set.

It imports macros and sets up menu items in Word, for handy formatting of docs. It doesn't get anymore how-to than this. Still I suspect there are some brilliant writers out there who will convince themselves this is too complicated. . . sigh.

I wouldn't hold your breath. I created a separate styles menu for one project so that authors didn't even have to click on Word's dropdown menu - they just had to click on one of a few named styles that were always visible (and even had simple icons giving a visual clue to what they did). Still, no one used them, and this was even after they had asked for a template to use.
