/bin/ls format woes

I have been googling until my eyes hurt but i cannot seem to find how to send long file names that contain spaces....
I am currently implementing an FTP server in java and have gotten to a point where i can send directory listings and files, however when i use WS_FTP-32 version 951130 FTP client to connect to my server, in the directory listing, all the the files/directories that have spaces are missing the first 'word' of the file. e.g.
say there is a file called "Java is Fun!.txt"
in that FTP client it is called "is Fun!.txt"
i have tried my ftp sever with Internet explorer, cuteFTP and SmartFTP and they all interpret the directory listing correctly. Is it just the WS_FTP client that is at fault or is there a special way to send long filenames via the /bin/ls method?

You should connect directly to the known server and see what commands it is sending you, then connect to your server and see the same commands and then compare the difference.
You can use a telnet client and connect to the FTP port and send the same commands an FTP client would send and see the output that the server sends you.
I used to do this to debug http problems. I connect to the http server using a telnet client connecting to the port 80.

  • Hard Drive file format woes

I bought a LaCie portable hard drive and like the idiot I am I was so excited about freeing up space I recorded a bunch of my files onto the portable. Without Mac-formatting it! Now I have a bunch of files I can't seem to access because they were recorded on the drive with the IBM formatting. So now i have a bunch of those little dark rectangles that I can't even get to by using Parallel.
They say Unix Executable when I Info them.
Anyone know how I can convert them back.
    Thanks.
    glennm45

Do you know what each of the files is, glen?
Simply adding the appropriate suffix to the file names may get you access to them. (ie ".txt" for a text file; ".doc" for a word file etc.)
If not , have a look at the thread at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=81361 for a discussion of the usual means of "revealing" their identity etc.

  • Another newbie MS to Mac convert - AW formating woes

Ok.. seasoned Microblows user, finally converted over to the "right" side. Trying to see how much I can do on my new G5 without compromising my ability to work with the MS crowd.
I have noticed that appleworks has incredible potential.. but I am still having basic formatting incompatibility with things like bullet points and indents when I save as a .doc.
Is this normal? I expected issues with tables and indexes.. but not with simple bullets and indents.
Can someone assist? PS... Pages on the other hand does an excellant job of pdf 'n and MS exports with ZERO formatting issues.
Before I buy Pages.... is there help for Appleworks that Im missing.?
    thanks in advance

    Goose asked:
Before I buy Pages.... is there help for Appleworks that Im missing.?
You're not missing anything. Pages is a superior word processor to AppleWorks' word processing module. And as Barry notes, AppleWorks's will eventually be superseded by iWork.
NB AppleWorks can save PDF as well as Pages can. Pages just uses Mac OS X's inbuilt PDF engine to create PDF files, like every other Mac OS X app does.
NBB Unless you need Pages now, you may wish to wait till January. Apple announced iWork '05 in January 2005 at MacWorld. Odds are that iWork '06 will be available then.
The question to ask yourself is will you get USD$79 value from iWork '05 between now and January. If the answer is Yes, then go for it.
And as another person notes, NeoOffice/J is a free clone of Microsoft Office and will open Word documents very well. It's based on the free OpenOffice program. However, its future is in doubt as Sun is making it difficult for the two sole developers of the application to get funding - Sun have announced they will make a native version of OpenOffice for Mac OS X, but have said so before and were unable to do so, and because it's technically difficult.

  • HD formatting woes

I just purchased a Western Digital 1TB drive (which I assume is made up of 2 500GB drives?) and am having troubles formatting it for my Mac. It came formatted as MS-DOS I believe, and when I went to initialize it as MacOS Extended Journaled in Disk Utility, it gives me the following message next to the erase progress bar:
newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk4s1: partition size is not a multiple of 4k.
and the progress bar just keeps scrolling with no indication to any progress .. i have left it like this not knowing whether or not i should force quit. advice would be very appreciated!! thanks

If this is a single drive (which it probably is) then here's what you need to do:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If there are in fact two drives, then you will need to disable the RAID array and repeat the above on both drives. Then re-create the RAID.

  • Premiere Elements 9 for Mac: import clip format woes

So, is the Mac version of PrEl 9 simply unable to import video clips in the .wmv or .avi formats, or are there some codecs or modules I can install to enable this?

The Mac version absolutely does edit DV-AVIs. In fact, it edits them natively -- just as if they were DV-MOVs.
But I doubt your editing software is creating DV-AVIs. It's likely using some proprietary codec.
There is a program called G-Spot for PCs that will show you your AVIs codec information. There is also a Mac program that will do this for free, but I don't know the name of it.
If you can find it and we can determine what the codec is for your AVIs, we may be able to figure out what to do with it or how to convert it to an editable file.
Meantime, you can try to put it in Premiere Elements, place it on your timeline and Share/Computer/MOV using the DV preset. It may convert the file into something you can use in an editing project.

  • Ipod Formatting Woes

    Hello one and all,
Just today I had bought a 30g 2007 video Ipod from my local Pawn Shop. It was a fairly good deal, I got all the accesories and what not, and to my suprise the battery was charged and the thing turned right on..
But when I got home just a few hours ago, another thing jumped to my suprise. My Itunes was not prepared to read this new Ipod in its state. It told me i needed to reformat.. easy enough, yes?
I thought so, too. But as soon as I started to do so, an error came up. I belive it was error 1628. I restarted everything.. my comp, my Ipod, and my hopes but still I got this error.
Now I was using the oldest edition of Itunes, because the new ones would seem to mess up my songs, and I had been for a good while. This new Ipod has plenty of music allready, and I'm unsure how to rid of it.. I uninstalled my Itunes after backing up my music and still when I try to format the Ipod as part of installation I get this error..
Now I feel as if I'm far far up the deepest creek.. any help? Together I am sure we can fight this evil error 1628!

  • How do you keep text box formatting data after saving and closing a PDF? (Acrobat XI)

I love that Acrobat XI has the feature "Edit Text & Images". It saves me and my company time when modifying PDFs for our clients. Though I am having some formatting woes...
When I insert a new text box into the document, I can span the entire text box from top to bottom of the page. I can type whatever I want in it and it makes it simple for editing later. Though, when I save the document, close it, and reopen it, all the text that was in one huge text box is broken out into multiple text boxes (per line of text). This makes it a pain to do any edits to the document because the text overlaps and does not wrap (different text boxes over one another). How can I stop this from happening? Is there a way to combine multiple text boxes maybe? What is the best solution to this issue? (running trial version of Acrobat XI on Win7 64-bit)

Why we have chosen not to use comments is due to the how jumbled they become on a page. We are basically going back and putting detailed annotations/footnotes (with numbered markers) to identify what portion of the page the functionality lives/exist. Comments also sometimes close so you cannot find them very easily...
I have just figured out with this form text field solution, I can't use underlined text...sigh...
Update: Figured out the underlined text, CTRL+I

  • What is the diffrence between ASCII and BIN mode

    Hello All,
What is the diffrence between ASCII and BIN mode
    Regards,
    Lisa.

    'ASC' :
ASCII format. The table is transferred as text. The conversion exits are
carried out. The output format additionally depends on the parameters
    CODEPAGE, TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS, and TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS_EOL.
    'IBM' :
ASCII format with IBM codepage conversion (DOS). This format correspond
to the 'ASC' format when using target codepage 1103. This codepage is
often used for data exchange by disc.
    'DAT' :
Column-by-column transfer. With this format, the data is transferred as
with ASC text. However, no conversion exists are carried out and the
columns are separated by tab characters. This format creates files that
can be uploaded again with gui_upload or ws_upload.
    'DBF' :
The data is downloaded in dBase format. Because in this format the file
types of the individual columns are included, import problems, for
example, into Microsoft Excel can be avoided, especially when
    interpreting numeric values.
    'WK1' :
The data is downloaded in Lotus 1-2-3 format.
    'BIN' :
Binary format. The data is transferred in binary format. There is no
formatting and no codepage conversion. The data is interpreted row by
row and not formatted in columns. Specify the length of the data in
parameter BIN_FILESIZE. The table should consist of a column of type X,
because especially in Unicode systems the conversion of structured data
into binary data leads to errors.

  • How to open .bin files on Mac?

Hey, I was wondering, how do we view .bin files on Mac computers? The .bin files that I have are generally movies, so I want to extract them sumhow to allow me to watch the file. In Windows, I would usually use a program called Alcohol 120% to mount the image on the harddrive, and then open a media player and watch it thru there...Im not sure if anyone, knows what Im talk about.. but thanks

There's no such thing as .bin video format.
".bin" is normally an extension used by a CD image file. CD image itself is a "snapshot" of a CD disc that can contain virtually anything -- a software, a VCD movie, an SVCD movie, a game, X rated images, etc.
For .bin files, you should always try open the .bin file first -- think it as a helluva big "zip file" that fits usually perfectly to a single CDR disc.
For opening such image, you have two options -- you can burn it to a CDR and see what it has inside it after you've burned the disc.

  • Convert from .bin/cue to .mpeg or .mov

    Hi,
Im not sure this question is in the right place, but here it goes. Anyone know how to do this? Basically, i got a movie in bin/cue format and i want to convert it to .mov or mpeg. Any hints would help.
    Thanx!

when I open the program, it said I needed mpeg2enc to download and install. I noticed the word "intel" in the website address. I don't have a g5 with intel processor, only a G5.When I selected download, it took me to a page that contain tons of words, which probably is computer language. What do I do?

  • In gui_download FM can we input  FILETYPE = 'WK1'

In gui_download FM can we use the filetype = 'wk1'. or it is going to support only BIN and ASC.
i want to upgraded ws_download to gui_download.in that ws_download filetype was 'WK1' .so how to give WK1 IN GUI_DOWNLOAD.
    PLS ITS URGENT

    you can use WK1 also
    chk this help
    'ASC' :
ASCII format. The table is transferred as text. The conversion exits are carried out. The output format additionally depends on the parameters CODEPAGE, TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS, and TRUNC_TRAILING_BLANKS_EOL.
    'IBM' :
ASCII format with IBM codepage conversion (DOS). This format corresponds to the 'ASC' format when using target codepage 1103. This codepage is often used for data exchange by disc.
    'DAT' :
Column-by-column transfer. With this format, the data is transferred as with ASC text. However, no conversion exists are carried out and the columns are separated by tab characters. This format creates files that can be uploaded again with gui_upload or ws_upload.
    'DBF' :
The data is downloaded in dBase format. Because in this format the file types of the individual columns are included, import problems, for example, into Microsoft Excel can be avoided, especially when interpreting numeric values.
    'WK1' :
The data is downloaded in Lotus 1-2-3 format.
    'BIN' :
Binary format. The data is transferred in binary format. There is no formatting and no codepage conversion. The data is interpreted row by row and not formatted in columns. Specify the length of the data in parameter BIN_FILESIZE. The table should consist of a column of type X, because especially in Unicode systems the conversion of structured data into binary data leads to errors.

  • Want to change Public, private and vip address on RAC 10g R2 windows 2003

The network section told us the configuration of the network who support our cluster will have to change all ip address.
We are looking for a complet document who give all the step by step instructions how to make this change.
We have to change the Public, private and VIP at the same time of our 3 nodes cluster.
We know the OCRCFG will be impact. So we will take backup of it first.
Can someone are able to indicate us how to procede to execute this task.
    Thanks

    Hi,
i check the Note:283684.1 you give me, but it didn't give all the answers to my problem.
I finally found a recipe to make the job. I would like to tell you it's not supported be Oracle, but it work very well
Don't forget to take a good backup of the ocrcfg and vote disk before you start.
    Here we go:
Stop all Oracle service on all nodes before the change of the address, the low format of the ocrcfg and vote disk
change the address in the file host in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc with the new address
change the ip address in the window network definition connection with the new address
    ocopy \\.\ocrcfg d:\backup\ocrcfg.dmp
    ocopy \\.\votedsk1 d:\backup\votedsk1.dmp
rem go to directory of the cluster binary crs\bin
    cd /D D:\Oracle\Ora10g\crs/bin
rem Format raw ocrcfg and vote disk
    LogPartFormat.exe \\.\ocrcfg /q
    LogPartFormat.exe \\.\votedsk1 /q
rem Run in prompt mode the cluster setup
    rem crssetup.exe config -nn %s_nodenumberlist% -pn %s_privatenamelist% -ch %ORA_CRS_HOME% -oh %s_OracleHome% -c %s_clustername% -l "%s_languageid%" -q %s_votedisklist% -g %s_usergroup%
    rem example for 2 node
    crssetup.exe config -nn host_name_node_1 ,1,host_name_node_2,2 -pn host_name_node_1-priv,1,host_name_node_2-priv,2 -ch D:\Oracle\Ora10g\crs -oh D:\Oracle\Ora10g\crs -c crs_lab -l "CANADIAN FRENCH_CANADA.WE8MSWIN1252"; -q "\\.\votedsk1"

  • Exchange 2010 EMC and EMS errors - BLOCKED by software restriction

    EMC has this message:
Initialization failed "Execution calling 'GetSteppablePipeline" with "1" arguement: File D:\program files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\RemoteScripts\ConsoleInitialize.ps1 cannot be loaded because its execution is blocked
    by software restriction policies"
    EMS has this error:
"There were errors in loading the format data file: D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange 2010\V14\Bin\exchange.format.ps1x
ml, , D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange 2010\V14\Bin\exchange.format.ps1xml : File skipped because of the following validation exception: File D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange 2010\V14\Bin\exchange.format.ps1xml cannot be loaded because its execution is
blocked by software restriction policies. For more information, contact your system administrator."
All other powershell scripts work just fine.  It is not the execution policy.  That is set properly.  Authenticode returns valid on the files. There are no settings it GPO to control or cause this. Email working fine.  It just started
after a reboot for updates.  Any other thoughts before I spend $500 for a call?
    Server2008 Standard SP2
    Update Rollup 4 v2 for Exchange Server 2010 SP2
    Thank you

The long and short of it was Microsoft Certificates didn't update and were expired. I was not given a reason why this happened but the final solution after Microsoft spent 2 weeks on this was to first reinstall Exchange Service Pack 3, reboot. Install
update rollup 8, and reboot.  This fixed the EMC but not the shell.  Then they reinstalled the rollup 8 again and one more reboot.  Everything now works.  I'd say with all the other little tweaks they looked at as possible suspect and "other
things" they fixed in their efforts to solve this, I defiantly got my money's worth.  Despite not really knowing what really caused the issue in the first place

  • Cannot get details for a SLED+SP1 workstation

    Hello everybody.
    Using ZAM 7.50.0023 IR 10.
I have licenses for both Windows and Linux workstations.
No firewall is operating/in use between the ZAM server and the Linux box.
I installed the ZAM client on the SLED10+SP1 box without problems and the
client is running as root user; port 7461 on the client is in LISTEN state:
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
    tscclient 10008 root 3u IPv4 3093188 TCP *:7461 (LISTEN)
The client gets detected by the Network Discovery task but I'm unable to get
more details from the client, even if I force a scan either using the manager
    or the WEB console.
Here's what reported when running in "diagnostic" mode:

to reveal the address of the ZAM server.
I can telnet to port 7461 from the ZAM server to the client without problems.
I tried by defining a Collection Set in several ways:
    .. LAN Address = <MAC address of the client>
    .. Asset-Type = Unix/Linux
    but unsuccessfully.
From the Manager, I can perform a Query for "Inventory Type = UNIX
Workstation" and the client gets reported but again I don't have additional
    info available.
The the row reporting the client box, I can force a "Scan now" but I do not
see evidences of the scan in progress.
"netstat -an" does not report any connections to the IP of the client box.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Does your Collection Server event log show any indication that the Client in question has connected to it, or has asked for a scan? Even more, has that Client scanned by this time and this issue become moot?
I've observed that sometimes a freshly restarted Client won't scan until it's gone through at least one checkin cycle.
What's your Client checkin interval? That should be in the Collection Server's "Advanced" tab (in the Manager).

Judging from the output, I think that OP has a system from before that news post you linked and hasn't quite understood the news post correctly.
@jgvr: I think you have missed this news update and haven't read the forums on how to do it, thus ending up with a borked system.
My approach would be to move everything back to where it originally was, then upgrade everything (including AUR packages) except for glibc, bash and filesystem and see how far that gets you first. But as @Scimmia says, if you installation was from before Jan 2013, just re-install the whole thing.
