HD Media Archival advice?

I'm soon to be the proud owner of a Sony EX1R which will shoot HD video to solid state media at 35Mbs. I want to get my storage scratch disk/archive system dialed now so I'm good to go when the camera arrives. I'm an independent videographer and I would like to have:
2TB for active projects
1TB for archived stock footage
So my questions is: Can I use Disk Utilities Raid options to build a Raid that would suit my purposes without buying a pre-configured standalone RAID system.? I would need all footage back-up all the time (mirrored?).
My current drive configurations is 3 external 1 TB drives daisy changed using FW400 and then FW800 into my Mac Pro (8Core 12GB Ram). My System and personal drives are all ready back-up up to an internal 1TB. I appreciate I'll need some more drives to make this work which isn't a problem and it will be cheaper than buying a self contained RAID from the likes of G-Tech.
Will through-put be an issue? I will only ever need to access media from one computer. Will the drives going to sleep be an issue? Will FW 400 be a bottleneck? Any help and advice on possible solutions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response. I won't be 'capturing' so much as 'log and transferring' as I'm shooting to SxS cards. Unfortunately my Mac Pro doesn't have eSata connection and my 1 TB drives only have eSata, FW400 and USB2. So maybe my best option is to just use my everyday back-up software (Memeo) and continue on as I have been. It backs up immediately which is cool.

  • X-SAN Media Network Advice

I am researching into the implementation of a video / audio network using X-SAN as a system to manage multiple workstations and a pool storage array.
Could I ask your advice about what I think I require in order ensuring I get the right network setup to suit my needs.
The network (in concept) is only small, it involves 2 workstations, one dedicated for video the other for audio. Using X-SAN a Raid server would provide the files to both workstations (which may use the same media).
In terms of setup I would prefer to sue Workstation 1 as the video ingest and editing station, and the same for Workstation 2 (except for audio ingest and editing). Possibly another computer as a meta data controller, maybe a G4, my only concern is would a G4 be powerful enough to handle the meta data?
It would be great to distribute processing of both Compressor and Logic to the server along side sharing media, although I am not sure if this is possible or what have detrimental effects on a workflow.
Eventually we may look to expand to 4 Workstations, we were thinking of using Fibre Channel opposed to Ethernet, but again due to cost would this be a worthy upgrade?
For the setup I have described would you be able to offer some opinions / advice, all help is more than welcome.
    Kind regards, Jim.

When you are getting started it can be pretty expensive. Depending on how much space you need and how many computers you are hooking up to it. We started out with 3 machines (don't forget the meta-data controller MDC). Apple recommends both cables hooked up to the dual fibre card. That is already 6 ports on the fibre switch. For each workstation it will be about $1500. That's $1000 for Xsan Software and $500 for the fibre cards and another $20-$30 for the gigabit ethernet card. Depending on what fibre switch you get, you could be paying anywhere from $3000 on up. Make sure to get one that is expandable or connects to other switches. The apple store has some on their website. Just search for fibre
    Here is the rough layout
    http://www.apple.com/xsan/videoworkflow.html
Apple recommends I believe a dual proc G5 at least for the MDC. We have a cluster node acting as the MDC and a workstation as the backup meta.
What's cool about it is the startup costs were a little big but now adding to the storage is a piece of cake. We just added another Xserve raid and was able to implement it into production really really easy. All it really took was adding the two cables to the existing switch and raiding the drives.
Hope this helps. The apple store is a good place to start when finding prices. These will be pretty much the prices you see everywhere else.
Good luck. Let me know if you need any more info,
    Thomas

  • Seeking Feedback Concerning Media Archiving

Hello- I'm just looking for some feedback and second opinions for getting the most out of our archive solution which includes an Xserve and a Magnum 448, because right now I'm dealing with an archive solution that's a bit unstable, overly complicated, and seemingly not robust enough to assure it's a long-term archive/media solution.
Let me lay out some details and I'd like any opinions or tips for my situation:
I'm employed by a small video production company who have a large library of production masters (HDCAM and DVCPRO, 1000+ tapes total) that they needed backed up/archived. The choice was made to archive digitally (as opposed to physical tape duplicates), which entails capturing the footage in Final Cut Pro and then taking those raw media files and archiving them to LTO-4 cartridges and then restoring them when needed for editing, etc.
An Apple Xserve running Atempo's Time Navigator 4.2 to interface with a Magnum 448 was bought as the archive solution (a decision made before I was hired- but I am the primary engineer and operator now and have to play the hand I was dealt). The Xserve is also connected to a QLogic fibre switch which mediates data between the Xserve/Magnum, a hard drive server, and the workstations that capture and edit.
We've learned to make things work but the Time Navigator [TiNa] package is not very intuitive and sometimes limited in function for such a complicated interface:
-if files are archived incorrectly, you can't rename, delete, or designate them as faulted in anyway- they're stuck taking up storage space and in the catalog leaving the potential to restore bad footage
-there's lots of esoteric, manual operations, and modules in using TiNa even for the basics- a simpler, more self-contained, end-user friendly interface would be nicer
-searching for and selecting specific files can tedious and the 'find' function can be hit-or-miss
-TiNa doesn't state which cartridges it needs for a restore until the moment it begin to access the data from that particular cartridge- if that cartridge isn't in the library it ends the restore (unless you are watching the entire restore and/or quick enough to catch it and do some manual operations- otherwise it automatically times out)
-Alarms and errors can lack details (ex. "1 object(s) are not correct restored"... and then looking at the 'details' doesn't tell you the specific object/file that had the error)
Now I can deal with the Atempo software being unwieldy- but the more alarming issue is that after only a year of moderate use, there are alerts when restoring media that state- "Physical Error[s] were detected on [the] drive while reading media..." and certain files/tapes can't be restored (which will have to be recaptured- something that causes more wear an tear on the masters, which we want to avoid). This has happened with multiple cartridges and our cartridges have only had maybe had three uses in the Magnum's drive- once for the initial archive, then a restore or two.
These LTO-4 cartridges are supposed to be our long-term library and working media source; we're nearly done with capturing all the masters, which will be put into protective storage and we're planning on duplicating the LTO cartridges for safety's sake- but having media that's compromised for restoring and being unsure whether our backups are secure and usable is unacceptable.
So here are my basic questions and concerns:
Does anyone know what may cause or correct the 'physical errors' issue or any Atempo/Time Navigator/storage tips in general?
I asked Atempo support once and they said I should talk to Tandberg about the errors. I talked to Tandberg and they said it could be the LTO cartridges- but I've used both Quantum and Sony brand and have had the same issue. So I'm unassured the LTO-4 based solution is reliable at this time.
Is there any recommended software solutions besides Time Navigator that better fit our bill?
I basically want a software that backs up the media when I tell it and restores easily when we need it- with a catalog/directory that can be modified and corrected. I have no need for a daily, automated, date-based, data/file structure archive.
I've seen that Atempo offers 'Atempo Digital Archive', which may be closer to the mark than TiNa. I've also heard good things about PresSTORE.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. If you've got any ideas or sympathies, I'm glad to hear them.

    Hi Archimedes76,
I use windows media player to manage my music files. Regarding your music file info issue, sometimes I do have to restart my media hub so that it'll re-index the files especially if I transferred a lot of new media. If after a restart and waiting for a few hours while the media rescan and reindex files doesn't work for you then you might try to read this. I found it on the linksys support page though the example shown there is  a windows PC.
         Hope this helps!

  • I need multi-system media storage advice please...

I have a small video production company; we currently have two workstations, a Power Mac G4 dual 1.42Ghz and a Power Mac G5 dual 2.0Ghz. Our workload is increasing at a healthy rate. But with more work comes the need for larger and more flexible storage for our media. We primarily work in DV and more recently HDV.
Typically my editor and I will work on different projects back and forth. What we are forced to do is copy all our assets back and forth from system to system. We have multiple firewire drives on both systems but sneaker-netting them back and forth doesn't work because normally both projects we are working on may share the same drive. So inevitable, we are forced to copy it from one firewire to another or through the network. It's not over efficient to say the least, and at times it messes up backups and keeping things correctly up to date.
What we need is some sort of shared storage that both systems can access a RAID setup at the same time, but of course has enough bandwidth to serve the Power Macs their HDV media. An Xserve is a total overkill, and honestly beyond our budget.
Does anyone have any cost-effective suggestions? I would think, bandwidth-wise, something like a Firewire 800 or eSATA makes the most sense. I am very computer savvy, but I have to admit my knowledge of the different solutions and how they could work for out setup evades me. That’s why I've come to you guys!
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

can someone please recommend a solution that I can use to store and access all my dv projects? I'm using imovie, but soon to upgrade to fcp, and am looking at the lacie 2tb raid drives. My issue is that I do not understand Raid and how it will affect my ability to access and edit directly. I tend to like to import lots of footage (60-80gb) and then work through the editing process with all of it at my fingertips. I want a solution that will allow me to put all my video in and work with it from there, while knowing that I have the ability to recover the data should the drive malfunction. Ideally I'd store all my footage on that drive long term, but not sure if that's the best way. Somebody straighten me out on this.
It's a bit daunting. I'm not afraid of spending up to about $1500 on this, but I want to be sure that I pick the correct hardware. I do not necessarily need the ability to share over network or have multiple machines access projects simultaneously, just redundancy / stability and speed for accessing during editing sessions I guess.
    thanks! BT

  • Media drives advice

My new Mac Pro arrives in 5 days. I need some new media drives - for high res, high track count audio work + HD, 2K and some 4K video work. My visual work is not massively demanding - mainly pilots, trailers and short films - not a lot of fx or compositing.
I will need around 6-8TB of storage. I have been considering these two:
    https://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?id=10624
    http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-raid-studio
My experience of LaCie is that they have been unreliable - all my previous drives failed. But that was quite a long time ago.
My experience of G-Tech is that they are really noisy - lots of loud ticking as the copy or delete data. I have read that the G-RAID Studio is noisy.
Anyone tried them both out? Any views out there. Anything else to consider?
    Thank you : )

If you are going to be doing 4K video, then I recommend a raid 5 system such as the Pegasus2 R4 or R6 systems for fast and secure storage.  I have had a late 2013 Mac Pro cylinder since January of this year, and I have been using it with a Pegasus2 R6 raid 5 system since the Mac Pro arrived in mid-January  the Pegaus2 has worked flawlessly and gives me read and write speeds of 800 MB/sec  or more consistently.  I have been editing 4K video in Final Cut Pro X and to a much lesser extent in Adobe Premier Pro 2014 CC without any problems whatsoever.  The Pegasus2 systems may cost a bit more than systems from Lacie or G-Technology, but they are great systems which run cool and quiet even when pushed hard editing 4K video.

  • Iphone 4 OS5 bluetooth in car only works with music no media any advice?

Hi, I have an iphone4 connected to my car bluetooth and its fine when playing music but the audio connection is paused when i try to play other audio (like VLC media player) through the system. i had no problem doing this before i upgraded to OS5.any ideas or has anyone experienced this? I already repaired and still not working. When I switch between 'music' and the media player the audio plays for about half a second but then it stops as the music automatically pauses and mutes the audio.

By the way the media player is an app in the iphone to play videos.

  • Archiving Vendor Payment Advices

    Hi,
I'm looking for assistance in archiving vendor payment advices.
    Can anyone help please?
    Many Thanks,
    John.

    Hi Karin,
    Thanks for your reply.
I am referring to the archival of the output media 'Payment Advices' which are associated with the payment documents (normally doc. type KZ). The subject is addressed in the SAP help text at: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005vp/helpdata/en/02/5bd7345a238045e10000009b38f83b/frameset.htm.
However, we are getting the following error when we try to create the Payment Media in F110: Message no. SPOC020 “Invalid value for parameter ARCHDEST”.
If you have experience of archiving Payment Advices I would appreciate your input.
    Many Thanks,

  • FCP7 - media is becomes disconnected on Xsan unprovoked by user

    Hi folks,
I ran across this issue a month or two ago with one of my student workers.  We were able to fix the problem on the fly and I just assumed it was user error that caused his files to go wonky, but now I can't see that as the answer.  I don't really know how to describe the problem without just saying what exactly happened:
I exported a video yesterday morning.  The sequence was perfectly intact and there was no missing media anywhere in the project (which isn't big, 1 sequence, and only about 15 gb of ProRess422 movies in 18 clips).  After exporting I closed the project; throughout the rest of the day yesterday I worked on other projects, but never that project.
Today, I opened the project and 6 of the 18 clips show up as offline.  When I click reconnect, FCP tells me it's looking in the root directory of the Xsan for the clips, where they have never been located.  I did a Log and Transfer from a Canon Vixia first thing when I started the project so the .mov's went straight to the Capture Scratch (which has never moved).
When I go to "Locate" the files, the clips in the Capture Scratch that I should be able to reconnect with are grayed out.  If I deselect "Matched Name and Reel Only" then I can select the file I want, but when I do I get the message: "File Attribute Mismatch - some attributes do not match the original, etc.."  If I say "Continue" then it reconnects and ends up being the wrong file (that threw me for a loop).
So after this happened I went into my Finder into the Capture Scratch and went through the 18 clips.  It looks like what happened is some files were deleted, and then replaced with the same name but with a different file.  Specifically: I have clips 138-155.  Clip 146 is now the exact same as Clip 153, whereas yesterday morning they were completely different.
Has this happened to anyone else?  It could very well be an issue with our Xsan too, but thought I'd ask around here since I've only noticed the problem in FCP.
Running FCP 7.0.3, and OSX 10.6.8 on MacPro and Xsan.  Xsan is hooked up via fiber.

We are having the exact same problem, but it's much more widespread.  For the record we are using the following:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Xsan 2
    Final Cut Pro 7.0.3
Sony NX5U AVCHD media logged and transferred to ProRes 422 (proxy)
Sometimes our students can reconnect without issues, but often it's next to impossible to reconnect, so they have to batch capture their footage from their archived media.  For one or two clips, this isn't too bad, but sometimes it's almost an entire project.  I can confirm that this is the same issue because the clip paths in FCP now just list "Xsan:" (our Xsan volume name) or "Xsan:Clip ####.mov" (where there should be many other folders).  Permissions aren't an issue, because all the files show up in Finder and can play back in QT without issue.
One thought I've had is about how FCP auto-names the ProRes clips as they are ingested from .  All the clips are sequentially numbered as Clip #1, Clip #2, etc..  If a student ingests from more than one media archive (or SDHC card), they will have multiple Clip #1s, Clip #2s, etc..  In Capture Scratch, FCP will automatically increment the clip name until it finds the next available name.  Example:
    Card A
    Clip #1
    Clip #2
    Clip #3
    Card B
    Clip #1
    Clip #2
If I ingest the following from Card A:
    Clip #1
    Clip #3
And then try to ingest files from Card B, this is what I get:
Clip #1 becomes Clip #2 (the next available name)
    Clip #2 becomes Clip #4
You can see what a mess this can become.  The issue is further compounded when our students fail to uniquely name their archived cards.  In the logging information, all the reels are listed as "NO NAME", so it's impossible to figure out whether a clip is from one card or another.
Most recently, I've noticed the following behavior:  students reported that some clips suddenly started "flashing colors" and playing rapid random frames.  When restarting FCP, the clips in question (and several others) were offline.  This seems to be the first effect of this problem, but I can't trace it back to a specific cause.
Lastly, today, I discovered issues with students clips that had been recaptured after going offline.  I saved the project with a new name in an attempt to distinguish the newly captured files from the old ones.  One would expect a new project folder within Capture Scratch, but instead, I got several new clips right in the main Capture Scratch folder, all named "[new project name] #".
I'm thoroughly frustrated with all this, as are our students.  I think some of this just boils down to maintaining a very rigid ingest workflow, but the offline clips is very troubling.  Any other suggestions or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!
    Pete

  • Is there a way to capture two streams simultaneously?

I am using a Sony HVR-1500a video deck to transfer DV and HDV tapes to hard drives as part of an archiving project. The Sony deck can output both an SDI signal and a firewire signal at the same time. For archival purposes the project calls for capturing both signals and thereby creating two files. I am using a BlackMagic Decklink Extreme card to capture the SDI signal into Premiere Pro CS5. It works fine. I would like to use Premiere Pro CS5 to simultaneously capture the firewire signal. At the moment I am using Nero Vision from Nero 9.x running on the same machine as Premiere Pro to capture the firewire signal. This all seems to work but I would prefer to use Premire Pro for both signals. There are over 5,000 hours of tape to transfer. So, I only want to play each tape once. If anyone can tell me how to so what I am trying to do I would really appreciate it.

    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
I think that the points that David makes need to emphasized a bit. In particular his reply to Lee's comment regarding that the file output will be an exact replica because no re-encoding is done. For years  some people thought that just because video was "digital" that all "digital" copies would be identical. That is of course not the case. It is also not necessarily the case that a firewire output from a digital video recorder will be the same as the digital video output from the same recorder or even a "replica".   Digital Video recorders are optimized to provide a good looking VIDEO output for the human eye, and that means that a great deal of the technology in these machines are devoted to doing things to the picture that "massage" the data in such a way that it is pleasing to the eye. Many things are done to the data after playback that makes it look better. It is a very long list.... dropouts are corrected for, motion artifacts are smoothed in some situations, edges may be enhanced or blurred in others, color spaces may be changed, entire sections of images are interpolated, there are a whole list of things that happen - all in real time, and it actually is very fancy stuff. Depending on the specific machine and the output type a great deal of image processing occurs and that directly impacts what the image looks like when you view the video. When you take the direct data output you are not getting the benefit of all of the image processing that has been done. Truly Video ≠ File for many reasons - in fact they frequently are very different and will look very different.  There is another area of difference which David mentions which are the issues that relate to error correction and concealment. Correcting for these errors are fundamental to the design of digital video recorders in general and mini-dv in particular because mini-dv is a very error prone format due to the density of the recording and the media size. Correction and concealment are fundamental to the performance of that format and you easily can get different correction and concealment on every section and on every playback run - that is how error prone the format really is. I am saying that even though it is "digital" when you play back the same exact section of the tape - say only 10 or 20 seconds worth, it is extremely unlikely that you could ever get two  passes that were bit for bit identical data wise. These are not clones or anything even close to clones.  When you are moving just the data stream you are getting most of the errors (which can and do change) and not getting the benefit of most of the correction circuitry. You may get error flags that are telling you that the machine knows that there is an error, but correcting for that error outside of the machine on the file itself is a non-starter for many reasons including the fact that the exact algorithms that the manufacturer uses in hardware in the deck for correction are not available in software or on any editing system that I have ever heard of (even those made by the same manufacturer). So while the flag telling you that there is an error is nice - you really cant do anything with it and there is little if any benefit to it because it cannot be used to know what the circuitry did to make the picture look correct. It is sort of like lots of metadata - nice but what can you do with it? What does it really tell you? I suppose in aggregate it is useful to know how lossy or bad the tape is, but this really has little to do with the original point which was trying to have a best practice for MiniDv preservation. What you have "preserved" is in fact not what the machine would have reproduced as video at all. It is something different.  Frankly I feel the approach offered is too simplistic and is not best practice at all. IF one of the goals of preservation is to preserve the material in such a way that it is at least a fair representation of what the viewer would have seen at the time of playback on the deck, then I am afraid that I would have to argue that in this case a straight data capture that does not include all of the image processing technology used to create the picture is in fact a very poor preservation master precisely because with that information you can not recreate the viewing experience. In fact the best preservation master would be the SDI or HDSI output from the deck because what is coming out is digital video information that has the benefit of all of the image processing as well as data correction that the direct data stream does not have. The SDI stream has "video" and the firewire output has data - and they are far from identical and this can be very easily shown to be the case.

  • Permissions and itunes

I upgrades to Leopard and ran repair permissions after every update. I have restored all my songs from itunes that were on my iDisk. I cannot play them because of the permissions. I log in and try to authorize them and it says i have a problem with the permissions and if it cannot be corrected then i need to deauthorize the computer. if i deauth the computer and reauth it, will it fix the permissions prob.

It's pretty common that folks give the advice to "fix permissions" after an update, etc. However, that's actually generally pointless since the update process adds or replaces files with the permissions that they have in the distribution media/archive (and this is where the list of permissions from fix-permissions comes form, so it's redundant).
However, your problem has absolutely nothing to do with file permissions. iTunes uses an encryption key (your "authorization") to encrypt your iTunes Store purchases. If you deleted iTunes and the key file in your account, you deleted your permission (authorization) to play those song files.
There's a procedure that you can use to deauthorize and authorize your account (deauthorize means throw away the key you have, and authorize means to download one that's associated with your iTunes store account). This is what you have to do. See: [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420]

  • [(semi-)SOLVED] 3 systemd annoyances

    Hi there!
After some research on systemd I finally made it and switched to a systemd only configuration which works nearly perfect. The system starts up properly in most cases (see below). Its even a bit faster than before. It’s all fine except three things i want to fix. I hope for some great hints from the awesome community for fixing my systemd installation.
    1. race condition … or so?
For some reasons I can’t figure out sometimes my system stars up without keyboard support (USB). Everything works. systemd shuts the system down on pressing power button, I can connect to the machine via SSH, the only thing that doesn’t seem to work is the keyboard (the Num Lock LED stays of and can’t be toggled and I can’t input any text or switch TTYs). After rebooting it works like charm – or not – but mostly it does Any hints where to track this down?
    2. SSHFS mounts from /etc/fstab are not mounted
While using SysVinit all of my SSHFS mounts in /etc/fstab were mounted properly after system boot. This seems not to work with systemd. On boot there aren’t any visible error messages, but systemctl shows status loaded failed failed for media-archiv-usenet.mount (one of my SSHFS mounts, none of them works) … and:
my fstab (reduced to example, the other SSHFS mounts are in same style)
    systemctl status media-archiv-usenet.mount
Manual mount via mount /media/archiv/usenet works. systemctl start media-archiv-usenet.mount works too. Only automatic mounting on system boot doesn’t.
After re-entering the whole SSHFS mount configuration according to the line given by firecat53 my SSHFS mounts get finally mounted. Research and a hint in German forum pointed out, that systemd doesn’t use a shell for mounting and therefore has no idea of what key file to use.
    3. My home partition gets mounted in /media
The title says it. I have absolutely no clue where to begin with research on this. /media/home is another mount point for my /home. mount shows this:
    /dev/sda3 on /media/home type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)
    /dev/sda3 on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)
    systemctl status media-home.mount
Neither I set up anything like nor want I my home mounted in /media/home, too. How can I get rid of /media/home and media-home.mount in a clean and permanent way?
For some reason the same UDEV rule results in different behavior either it’s SysVinit or systemd. Removing the rule removed the problem described here – It removes the ability to auotmount USB stick drives, too, but hey!
Apart from that systemd works for me very well. Changing from SysVinit to systemd worked with some support from the IRC channel and the wiki. If there only weren’t this three annoying little … things …
Thanks in advance for your support on this!
    Kind regards,
    Dirk

I took that rule from the German wiki. In English wiki is an example for setting group for optical media to disk using the same syntax without /dev/. But I still think there is nothing wrong with udev, because I can reproduce this behavior when switching between systemd and SysVinit (just installed it again for testing).
As has been pointed out, your device matches the rule. Again, if you had searched, you would have found other threads about this very issue. FWIW: switching between init methods has nothing to do with the behaviour; rather than disregarding the advice the community is giving you (again), you could do us the courtesy of actually testing it by changing the rule.

  • Managing multiple iTunes libraries

My primary iTunes library, and the one that is synched to 2 iPhones, is on my desktop iMac with the files stored externally on a HD.  My second iTunes library is synched to my iPad, and on my laptop MBP, but there is no real data on the MBP.
I am about to move temporarily for 6 months so won't have access to my iMac but will have my MBP and want to bring the external HD with my media.  I'm happy to get rid of the current library on the MBP and would like to move the library file from my iMac to MBP so the library there thinks it is the same library as exists on my iMac.  Can someone please recommend the best way to do this?  My goal is so thisdoesn't necessitate me to choose that I sync my iOS devices with a "new" library and therefore have to re-fill with media.   Advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

you might want to have a look at 3rd party apps such as PowerTunes. you will have to be on OS X 10.4.9 (rather than 10.4.2 as per your signature) to run it.
btw, you seem to be on Macs, yet post in the iTunes for winsloth forum. in case you're using PC's, the above-mentioned app will not work for you.

  • ITunes thinks my 8 year old iPod classic is brand new??!

Hi,  Can anyone help with this please?
I've tried two different PCs and keep having the same issue, my only option is to click continue and really dont want to do this incase I lose all my music.  I've no idea if set to backup automatically but if there is a way to check this I'd be grateful.  Any ways to get round this and back up without losing anything would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    L

See Corrupt iPod classic. Start at the top for media recovery advice. If the file system hasn't been corrupted you may be able to get the media off without too much trouble. If the file system appears empty even when hidden files and system files are shown there is a possibility of recovery using unerase tools.

  • Image name shows instead of image?

i have done several homepages in iWeb.
when i tried to make one new today, as usually i dragged the picture from media archive into the page.
instad of showing the image on my iweb page, the filename shows.
and i cant find whats wrong. i want to use the image ...right now i just see file name?

i read some about backing up iweb ...and located the file "domain.sites2"
might klicked it of misstake i dont know.
when i drag an image to the page its wierd...i just see the linkname still....if i leave mouse pointer over image name ill see the path to the domain.sites2 folder...
adding pictures not been used before maybe klicking that file will insert, images used earlier wont show, just file name...

  • Older .mov files have no previews

Trying to see if ANYONE else has seen this problem:
I was digging through my media archive disk and noticed something very odd: maybe three quarters of my older .mov files show only a generic icon in the finder, and trying to use the Quick Look (or preview) feature will only play the SOUND from the file.  When played within QT 7.6.6 Pro, the files are still intact.  Is this a harbinger of the problems people have been complaining about with QT 7.7?
Add: attempting to re-save the files (to see if the format has changed between versions of QT) netted the same set of features, so it would appear that the difficulty may be with Finder, not QT.  As NOT ALL files are affected, I'm not sure what's going on.  Looking at the ages of the files, there's no hard and fast correlation between what the file was created (or last modified) and whether or not it displays correctly in Finder.  Worse, these clips all came from the same rip of the same DVD originally.  I have no clue what's going on, but it's making it difficult for me to separate out video clip from sound clip files in my working directories.
Ah!  That may be it.  The files that are displaying without video in finder may have last been worked on in QT using the Export as AIFF command.  But that shouldn't have affected the parent file.  Pretty glaring mistake if that's it.

Same problem here.  But I'm using QuickTime X and Lion.  Didn't notice anything until I upgraded to 10.7.1.   I was thinking it was related to that, but I guess not if you're having the same issue on 10.6.8.
