HDR Too much exposure, not enough Highlight, Shadow

For Lightroom generated HDR photos the range of Exposure has been changed to +/-10 from the normal +/-5. I would like to see a LR/HDR where this increased range is necessary. All the increased range does now is make it harder to fine tune the exposure and doesn't seem to provide any useful benefit. What is needed is a little more range (probably +/-125 or 150) in the Highlight and Shadow sliders. The info is there but the only way to get it is to use the local adjustments which should not be necessary. On the Shadows side the HDR does a great job of eliminating the noise so a little more range would be very useful.

While the help is well done, ACR is a pretty complex topic, and for a more in depth coverage I would recommend the latest edition of Bruce Fraser's Real World Camera Raw, which Jeff has updated and will be available soon.

Too much Data, not enough Time.

Alright, So I have a problem...Guess thats why I am here.
I have a bulk of information after digitizing a few days shoot, the problem is, Its takes so long to transfer the information in HD format and I have multiple transfers I would like set up, however the computer seems to crash when multiple transfers going. Also sometimes I need to set up transfers where the original file needs to be in 2-3 locations. Causing a time issue.
So what I am looking for, is something along the lines that will allow me to line up a bunch of transfers individually, that can be done while I am not at the office.
any suggestions?

In my experience, rsync [http://rsync.samba.org> is by far the best utility for pushing data around quickly. It has a learning curve if you're not too familiar with shell commands, but is well worth the effort to learn.
Forgot to mention, if you are running 10.4 or later, rsync already comes bundled with your os.

Chicklet keys too smooth and not enough finger grip?

Hi I find the plastic chicklet keys are too smooth and there is not enough finger grip for me (friction), they dont stick so well on my fingers if you know what i mean?
I bought a silicone cover from ebay that was peanuts but it was so crap I had to press down hard on the keys to use them, it has eliviated the problem of smooth keys but the fit is bad. Can anyone recommend anything ? Thanks!

I use a sheet of microfiber cloth, but that's just me. Useful for cleaning your glasses in a pinch, if you wear one.

Strange problem: USB devices drawing too much power / not responding - multiple macs

Hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone had any solutions to a rather strange problem.
Yesterday my Lacie USB drive and my USB SD card both stopped working on my Macbook Air.
The USB SD card fails to mount (no power light), my Lacie USB drive brings up a warning that it is "Drawing too much power and will be disconnected".
The only thing I had done the day before was try and plug in a USB externally powered host to connect these two devices (and a printer).
This morning I tried these two devices (Lacie drive and SD card) on a different Mac and both still don't work - I get exactly the same issues as described above.
Is it a coincidence they have both gone wrong at the same time? Could it have been the external hub that broke these? Has anyone else come across anything like this?
I've done some searching and have run the SMC and Pram resets on these machines and it doesn't make any difference. I've also tried a different cable / used the cable on a different USB drive and it works fine.
Any help / advice would be awesome!

Are you talking about the CABLE ,the charger is the device that plugs into the wall socket
if it is the cable it has warranty with the iphone .Cable is intelligent ,they go wrong which is why you have a warranty
If it is faulty Apple will exchange it but you will have to take it to an Apple store genius bar ,nothing else you can do

Perfomance trouble - to much swap - not enough RAM

On an HP RX3600, HP-UX 11.23, with 8gb RAM, 2 CPU itanium. I have my sap Ecc 6.0 installed end of march 2007.
I have 110/120 users in session.
I have some performance problem.
2 weeks ago, my dialog average response time was very good (less than 400ms).
the Ø FE Network Time (ms) was near 60 0000.
Now i have poor perfromance :
Response time near 1000ms and Ø FE Network Time (ms) near 200 000.
I do not know why this increase, and what mean this "Ø FE Network Time (ms)"
It seems my perfomance problem are caused by to much swap.
I have 24 process dialog. The abap/buffersize is 450Mb
I have saved memory by changing some parameter :
PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET -> decrease to 536870912 (500MB)
DB_CACHE_SIZE -> decrease to 1610612736 (save another 500 MB)
SHARED_POOL_SIZE -> decrease to 629145600 (600 MB)
JAVA_POOL_SIZE -> decrease to 1048576 (1MB) - not used
Before I will buy new 4Gb RAM , have you an idea ?
Do you know something with an HP-UX bug about bad memory liberation ?

Hi,
Finally HP has today concluded that, we need to add additional RAM.
We are upset with this.
Mean while we have seen little bit improvement in performance, when we have stopped the Java stack.
Previously i also done lot of fight with parameters. But no result.
I hope u have set parameters correctly, no need to do further research on this.
If u still experienceing very bad performance, there is no other way, u also need to go for invest on memory.
Have you tried with SAP Memory Analyzer,

Too many computers not enough answers

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro at home and I use a Dell computer running Windows XP Pro. I have a 6th generation iPod classic. I usually listen to at work. Last Friday I took the iPod home and my son accidently turned it off while I was watching a movie. Low and below, the screen pop up and said I needed to restore my iPod. I did. All of my music was gone. Apple was kind enough to allow me to redownload my most recent purchases. So far so good. When I got into work today and attached my iPod to my work computer (windows), I got the message, iTunes has detected a Macintosh formatted iPod. You must restore this iPod before you can use it on Windows.
OMG!! I did not restore it because I did not know what that meant. Then I tried to back up my iTunes library to a DVD. iTunes would not back to DVD, it kept saying checking media then nothing. When I placed a CD in, it said checking media and then attempted to download the library to the cds. But I do not have that many cds to load all of this stuff I have there.
Help.
1. Can I play my iPod both at work and at home?
2. How do I download my work library so I can add this to my Mac at home?
3. Is there any help for me? I am an iPod illiterate.

Yes, provided it's in the Windows format

You can transfer the files using an external portable hard drive, or just use the iPod in disc mode. I don't know if the library files, album artwork etc. can be directly transfered between the OS's, but you can certainly share the media.

This will let you recover any data currently on your iPod that you failed to keep on your Mac. This is the information you could have used before you let iTunes restore your iPod.

I'm firmly in the PC world but does Time Machine do something similar for Macs? A file level backup beats the built-in iTunes backup to disc routines, not least because you can restore individual files should the need arise and, if the library is self contained and backed up to an external drive, you can properly test your backup or even take it with you...

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians

I placed an order on-line with Best Buy on 3-3-14 in which were 2 items. 1ea. guitar tuner and 2ea. HDMI cables. One item was shipped UPS to my old address in which was the wrong address and the other item USPS and still went to old address even after I changed my address in the system when I placed this order. I found that the item was kicked back to a main post office, now I get an e-mail from Best Buy thanking me for my returned item, which I never returned. The item sat in a post office for over 3 weeks, then they shipped it back to sender (BestBuy). I never been so disappointed in a company in my life, I really needed the item which were HDMI cables for my home entertainment. Now Best Buy tells me they returned the money to my MasterCard, which they havent until I called the automated teller, stating it will be returned in 3-5 days! MLB on FIOS: Too Many Orioles Not Enough Nationals

FIOS in Northern Virginia has three Mid Atlantic Sports Network Channels - 77, 577 and 1526 with most of the broadcast MLB games being with the Orioles. Fans of the Nationals in the Washington metropolitan area deserve more Nationals coverage. Why not allocate one of the three MASN channels to MASN2 HD and give us more Nationals games as Cox does.

The MASN2 games are carried on 501 in the DC area.

Why is there too much exposure when taking pictures?

My pictures come out over exposed when I take a picture with the flash any ideas why?

As with any point and shoot camera, the flash is of limited utility. If you get to close to someone while using it, they will appear over exposed. Try moving away from the person. Or, better yet, if you can, turn the flash off and turn on more lights.
You may also want to try removing any case you have. Some of them interfer with exposure controls.

Safari Bookmarks problem: Too many subfolders, not enough time!

Hi people,
My bookmarks were imported from IE. I have many main folders with many subfolders in each: thus I have always had my bookmarked information very organized and I know where to find anything, by category.
However now I'm using Safari on my new MacBook. When I want to add a new bookmark, I click the Bookmarks drop-down menu. I click "Add Bookmark..." A box displays that allows me to enter two things: the name of the bookmark, and the folder I want to enter it into. Then, clicking on the arrows next to the folder list, hundreds of folders come up in a huge fast-scrolling stream. Not main folders that I can see at a glance, but ALL of my folders, at once! This is a mess. Finding my main folders takes scrutiny and fiddling, and when I'm trying to work this is a huge distraction.
It's a visual organization problem: there seems to be no way to CHOOSE which folders I want to display. Safari simply displays ALL of my folders AND subfolders at once. To sort my new bookmark I must scroll through every single folder, (the scroll-speed makes this difficult, and the size of the icons and the tab-indents require leaning and squinting.) Alternatively I can save it in the bookmark bar, then open the bookmark window, then move the new bookmark elsewhere, step by step by step. This is tedious and distracting.
So can somebody please help me learn to do the following?
I want to find a way to display only the main category folders in the Add bookmark dropdown menu. I can choose from there which subfolders I want to open, and I don't want every single folder to show. Is there a way to do this??
If not, is there at least a way to change the color, text, or image of the main folders so that I can locate them easily within the huge list??
If I can not organize my bookmarks the way I need them using Safari as my main browser becomes an ordeal. I was VERY happy to switch from IE, but this is very discouraging. To continue using it I would have to come up with a completely new organiztional system and reorganize my nearly 3000 bookmarks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Rather than using the Bookmarks drop-down menu, perhaps using the Bookmarks Manager might be an easier approach. To access the Bookmarks Manager, click the "book icon" on the left of the Bookmarks Bar (if you haven't done so, the Bookmarks Bar is enabled in View Menu>Show Bookmarks Bar, or Apple Key/Shift/B).
When you click on the book icon (or Apple Key/Option/B), a back screen appears showing your various Bookmark collections and History on the left, and the detail inside each collection on the right (clicking on a collection reveals its contents). You can drag the current URL from the Address window down into the folder, which is a faster way to navigate through the Bookmarks. There, you can also create folders etc.
Go to the Safari Help menu>Safari Help or Apple Key/Shift/? and type Bookmarks. Additional information is provided about how to manage your bookmarks.
Lastly, 3rd party software exists as an alternative to Safari's Bookmarks. One popular one is URL Manager Pro. Personally, I find Safari's manager sufficient, however, this is something you may want to consider.

IMessaging issues - too mahy devices, not enough Apple IDs

We have many apple devices on our itunes account. Three iphones, three iPod touches, a MacBook pro, and three iPads. My husband who is in Kuwait just got a new iPhone. We were told that he could use the iMessaging on wifi to essentially text back and forth with me on my iPhone or iPad. Well, there is a ton of confusion on our account. If he sends a text, it comes from email address on our itunes account. It goes to every iphone and every ipad. He doesn't want to separate himself with a new itunes account because we share apps, books, and music. Is there a way he can still be on the icloud for everything in our 'main' account but we can each have our own ID for imessaging? He is the majority purchaser of music in our family and doesn't want to lose it on all his devices.

I will try this tonight. I think I tried it last night, but my ipads show the phone number as well. I also get a message that says your are changing the contact email and stuff for the itunes account each time I do this. I need my main and one itunes account information to stay the same. I have 3 ipads, apple tv, and two Iphones. All of them the newest out. It would end up with three email address on each device to choose from, I only checked the correct email for each device. My concern was it was switching the contact information for our itunes account each time.

CS4 Media Encoder - 7Mbps and 5.1 audio too much?

I recently re-encoded an SD DVD with a higher bitrate after initially using the "high quality" preset. I did the calcs and the 1 hour 15 minute video with 5.1 DD audio worked out to a 7MPBS CBR and fit on one single layer DVD.
The picture quality is of course very crisp. However, my problem is my player seems to be a bit glitchy on fast forwards. Even froze for a while. And there are a few blips or glitches in the video I did not notice in the lower bitrate render and burn.
I know that 8Mbps can be too much for some players to handle. But could 7Mbps and 5.1 audio be too much? Not sure what Mbps that combination adds up to. I also put quality on 5. Not sure of that setting's impact.
Should I try 6Mbps CBR or go back to variable? I am assuming that the issue is the render settings. I am using the same media, same timeline, same playback chain, etc.
I am somewhat surprised that the "high quality" preset has a low of 1.5, target of 4 and max of 5 and "quality" of 4. Or am I pushing it too hard with my settings? I figured since I had the space and was not trying to cram 2 hours on a SL DVD, why not max out the file size.
Clearly there is a setting or combination of settings that is creating a problem. Any help most appreciated!

I know that 8Mbps can be too much for some players to handle.
That's actually not true. ALL DVD players will handle a combined video/audio bitrate of around 10 Mbps. The cause of playback issues is more likely disks that don't read properly in the player.
The solution is threefold:
1. Quality burner (Sony/NEC is a very good brand)
2. Quality disks (Falcon Pro are the best I've used, better even than Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden)
3. Correct format (Some players work better with -R, some prefer +R)

Connect to iTunes, then click the Restore button. When asked, choose to set up as a new phone. After it finishes, right click on the name of the iPhone in the list on the left side of the iTunes window and choose Restore from Backup. Do this BEFORE you sync and after restoring.

Highlight/Shadow Clipping Indicator - Show the image too.

The highlight/shadow clipping indicator feature (Alt/Exposure or Alt/Blacks on my PC. Not sure what it is on a MAC)is marvellous and indispensible. But, it could be better, in my view.
When you are checking for clipping using this feature, the image disappears leaving you with only the clipped pixels. Everything else goes black.
The problem is that you only see the effect of your decision on how much clipping you want to allow (if any) when you take you finger off the Alt key.
It is vital, particularly when judging shadow clipping, which is so important in setting the overall contrast of the image, to be able to see the effect of your actions in real time. These actions can be so subjective.
So, would it be possible for the highlight and shadow clipping (i.e. the blown pixels) to appear in the form of a colour on the image, *but* keeping the image visible at all times?
Thinking about it further......it would be great to be able to switch between 'blacked out' and visible in Preferences, or some such.
