Hello, just starting to use my 2012 MBP.

Hello,
I just started this weekend to really use my MBP I bought while still in the Army back in 2012. (November I think it was.) A couple of things that are of interesting me:
1. Which port, Firewire, USB or Mini Display port, works most efficiently when changed to HDMI? (Which adapter(s) should I get?) I'm heading to Walmart later tonight.
2. Clamshell mode. This is what I hope to do. Any tips or tricks or cautionary tales?
3. Gaming: League of Legends and Starcraft 2 is more then enough gaming for me for now and they both work amazingly well (1 hour of test playing w/ each.)
4. I was a communications soldier in the Army so I replaced parts on radios as well as vehicles and PC's. I was hoping to upgrade my memory from 4GB to 8GB+. Can I do this on my own after purchasing said memory? Money is a bit limited now since I'm living off the GI Bill while I go to school for Medical Lab Tech.
5. Any tips or suggestions with this MBP? Admittedly, I'm going to be using it like a desktop-- until a new mac mini comes out. Then I'm maxing that out that little guy and will use this laptop for college.
Thanks for your time,
Slade.

Mini Display to HDMI - there are several available that work great.

Clamshell mode is straightforward to use, you can setup displays in System Preferences > Displays very easily.

Don't see a question in here - but I don't do gaming so cannot comment anyway

If you have the MacBook Pro non-Retina, memory upgrade is easy and straight forward - be sure to get quality memory from reliable sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial: http://www.crucial.com and both have on-line videos showing how the installation is done.

Tips???  Use it, enjoy it...don't worry about leaving it plugged in on the line, the charging circuit auto stops when the charge level hits 100% and then runs on the line until it trickles down to 93-95% and kicks in again.  Take it off the charger every couple of weeks and just run the battery down to 50% and plug in again.  That will give good battery life.
Thanks for your time,

I have just started to use Muse for our design agency and learning how to build ourselves a new site, I have managed to create a basic lightbox which contains sliding images, what I need to do now is have a pop up window which goes into detail about the projects, what I would like is a piece of text  or icon that when you roll over it and then click a separate window pops up with additional information in, once finished reading the info you can then click to close the box, any advice on how to do this?

The best way to do what you're asking is with the Composition widget. Start with the Tooltip preset, which, by default shows the info on rollover. You can change the option to show on click, which is what you're after. You can also add the close button or have the info disappear on rollout.

• Just starting to use InDesign CS2 and can't pull up my previous Pagemaker files; what do I do?

Just starting to use InDesign CS2 and can't pull up my previous Pagemaker files; says "damaged and cannot be recovered"
How can I retrieve those?

I have no idea what "diagnostic recompose" is...
Step 3 in this linked technote will show you how to do a diagnostic recompose - on a Mac. Instructions for doing it on Windows are out there somewhere, I'll try to find 'em if you can't. The technote tells you to remove graphics from master pages; I'd also unembed graphics (make sure all graphics are linked, not stored in the PageMaker doc) in order to try to get it to open up in ID.
I'm sure there are more things you can try, if that doesn't work, but my broken-PageMaker-doc skills are pretty rusty.
Also, you may want to edit your response on the forums webpage, and delete it from your future email-replies, so your email address and phone number aren't preserved for all to see on the forums, forever.
Edit: Step 3, not step 4

If you do not have it on disc, then download it, install it, and activate it with your serial numnber.  If you need to download it, if you purchased it online thru Adobe look for a link in your Adobe account online.  You can also download the trial version and activate it with your serial number...

• Just started out using Collections, Verifying Whether a Collection Exists

What do I query to see if a collection exists? When it hasn't got any members, yet?
Pete

Okay, am somewhat closer:
Verifying Whether a Collection Exists
Use COLLECTION_EXISTS to determine if a collection exists. For example:
l_exists := HTMLDB_COLLECTION.COLLECTION_EXISTS (
p_collection_name => collection name );
What kind of value does this function return? How do I check this, am not sofar into pl/sql.
If I want to make the creation of a collection conditional, only execute the creation when it doesn't exist. How do I do this?
Please help.

• Just starting to use aperture. is there a way to find and delete duplicate pix?

I'm working on a huge project and there are duplicates here and there. Is there a way to delete all duplicates from projects--or at least an easier way to do it then 1 by 1?

Aperture has no built-in tools to detect duplicates. There are some nice tools to detect duplicates in iPhoto libraries, so if you treat your Aperture library as an iPhoto library, you might give these applications a try:  see the post by Old Toad:

• Question regarding the IR receiver on the 2012 MBP non retina.

Hello!
I recently purchased a 2012 MBP this month.  While cleaning it using a soft cloth, I noticed that there were tiny scratches on the tinted plastic covering the IR receiver.  I have never taken my MBP out of my house and has mainly been used on a desk.  I was just wondering if anyone also had scratches on the tinted plastic besides the scratches due to normal use.
Thanks!

Does anyone not have an IR receiver on their MBP?

• Just starting out, basic problem here.

Hi, I'm just starting out using DW to create a very basic website. I'm following the tutorial found here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_website_pt1.html
I've created the container div and placed several divs inside of it. So far I've added a background image into one div and am placing text and images on top of the background.
I'm trying to place the business logo image in the top left corner 50px down and 90px to the right (from the top left corner). My CSS for the logo looks like this:
#Main_Logo {
position: absolute;
top: 50px;
left: 90px;
In the design view it looks exactly where it should be, but when I preview the page in Safari the logo is aligned with the very top of the background image and is very far left. Here is an image of what the design view looks like:

direct link: http://imgur.com/WCO8H
And here is the preview of the page in Safari:

direct link: http://i.imgur.com/8mhDP.png
Can anyone offer any advice? Why is this happening?
Thanks.

Thanks for the advice Nancy. My plan was to make the logo into a link back the the home page (as you've correctly assumed). So you're saying I won't be able to do that if it is placed inside the background image div? I thought that in order to position divs inside (or on top) of existing divs (like the background image) you needed to place the div you want to appear on top inside of the background div.
Also, here is my code so far:

The guy at the Genius Bar has told you absolute and utter rubbish.  It is true that Apple has stopped supporting iWeb, but it definitely DOES NOT mean that your website will stop working any time soon.
They should know that iWeb is an application on your Mac and as long as it is compatible with your OS - it works in Snow Leopard and Lion and will be compatible with the new Mountain Lion out this Summer, then you can still use it to build and maintain websites.
As long as your are not publishing your site to MobileMe, then you are okay - if you are publishing to a local folder and then uploading to another host that is fine and your site will not be going anywhere in a hurry.
You don't need to change software unless you really want to.

why does watching just youtube videos causes my fanspeed to be very audible! im using a retina MBP 2012 june

Video use a lot of CPU/GPU resources and thus creates heat.  The fans speed up in order to dissipate the heat.  If you open Activity Monitor, it will show you the % of CPU that the video utilizes.  At high speeds, the fans are very much audible.
ciao.

• Mid-2012 MBP with 27" Cinema Display SCREEN GOES BLACK WHEN USING USB PERIPHERALS IN DOCK

I haven't been able to find any straightforward answer as to why this is happening and it's becoming one of the most infuriating things in my life, impeding my workflow and costing me unmeasurable time in waiting, rebooting, screwing with cables, etc.
I use my MBP as a DAW for multitracking live audio events to ProTools through a digital console where I work. Here's my gear list that I use every day:
Mid-2012 MBP - Yosemite, 8GB, i7 quad 2.5, mechanical hd
HengeDocks dock for my exact model machine - has set-screw jacks for CinemaDisplay power, Tbolt, FW800, USB, USB, SDcard, headphones, etc
USB wired keyboard
Anker 1x4 USB3.0 hub - I have a TimeMachine 1TB drive, 3TB project backup drive, audio interface and MIDI I/O or PT iLok, depending what I'm working on
Magic Mouse (BlueTooth)
Here's what's happening:
SCENARIO 1 - I insert the CinemaDisplay (cD) power connector and TBolt plugs into the dock, tighten the set screws, close the lid of my MBP (already logged into Yosemite & linked with MagicMouse [mM]) and stick the MBP into the dock... everything comes up on the cD and I can go about my day. At this point, I can plug the USB hub into the back of the cD and the system sees the hub & all peripherals listed just fine.
SCENARIO 2 - Install cD powercon, TBolt connector, USB3 hub, USB keyboard into the dock, close the lid on MBP (again, logged in), insert into dock... cD comes up, looks great for about 15 seconds then goes completely blank. No response from key presses, mouse clicks, threats with a hammer, etc. Then, of course, I have to yank the MBP out of the dock, which hard-disconnects the external drives (backup and TimeMachine... good for them, right?) and causes the MBP to flake, thinking it's still in the dock, then not, then logging me out & requiring a password (not a big deal- I deal with copyrighted stuff, so passwords aren't the issue).
***EVEN IF I DO NOT PLUG THE USB3 HUB INTO THE HENGE DOCK, THE cD STILL GOES BLANK AFTER 15 SEC... IT ONLY SEEMS TO LIKE THE TBOLT AND POWER... NO OTHER PERIPHERALS (fw800, USB, etc)***
It seems like the MBP freaks out when the lid is closed and there are USB/FW peripherals plugged in while using a secondary TBolt display as the main output... seems stupid... if I need a closed-lid dock, the MBP shouldn't care what I have plugged in while the lid is closed. I had the same issues with Mountain Lion & Mavericks and now it's being repeated with Yosemite.
My goal in this exercise is simply to free up the USB jacks on the back of the cD for two reasons - #1) from time to time, I have extra things to plug in and I don't want some massive USB 1x8 hub on my desk... looks stupid; #2) the bottleneck created by plugging in the hub to the back of the cD (another hub via TBolt) almost triples the time required to back up/copy files. I move files from system drive to backup drive & back VERY often due to the nature of my job... speeding up this process would greatly improve my efficiency in the matter. Why would Henge create a dock with all the jacks on it to allow someone to plug into a cD that won't frickin work with said cD? Every other dock I've found makes the user stick the MBP on a slanted, goofy-looking stand and have the lid open or something dumb like that... what I have is the setup I need... just need the USB stuff to work while lid is closed and everything from powercon & cD to USB3 hubs will work without making the cD freak out.
Any ideas out there?

Have now taken the 27" display into the repair shop and after 24 hrs got the phone call - "appears to be nothing wrong with it, will check again on Tuesday and let you know".
I can't seem to find anything on the net describing a similar problem. Everything is working fine right now with the Mac Pro connected to the older 20 inch Cinema Display. In fact, everything seems to be working about a second faster.
I was told by the local retailer that Apple no longer makes the 27 inch LED Cinema Display product and the new display, the "Thunderbolt" will not work with my 13 month old Mac Pro.
***??? In 20 years of owning Mac equipment, this is my first major "uh-oh".

You could try wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS and all your programs.
Did you install any programs yesterday?
If not it may be best to take it to an Apple care center and have it checked out. Take it in while it is asleep so you ccan show then what is happening.

I think you are sailing in uncharted waters with those kind of modifications.
I am only guessing, but if you have not already done so,  do a PRAM reset and then trash your FCP preferences.

My understanding is the Mac is doing a ram/hardware test during the grey screen, if the card you added had additional memory, then it is very likely the test will take longer - but I am no hardware expert.

The phone is connected via Wi-Fi and is updated to the most recent OS that the phone allows. The computer is also connected to the internet. But I still get the error: "itunes could not contact the iphone software update server because you are not connected to the internet."
