Help Adding hard drives to V240

I'm a "newbie" at upgrading existing sun servers. I have a V240 w/ two 36GB drives.
I have two additional drives that I want to install. What do I need to do this?
Also, I have some user directories that I would like to move off of those drives, and onto the new ones and then expand the root filesystem to populate the main HD. Can I do this without destroying the data on the root partition?
thanks!

Since the 240 holds 4 hot swap drives, as long as you're adding only 2 drives to the unit, this should not be a problem. Additionally, the drives are hot swap, so this can be done live.
If the drives are supported on the v240:
1) insert the drives in the open slots
2) run devfsadm -Cv on the live kernel
3) check format
you should be good to go!!
First off, YOU CAN'T GROW ROOT!!!!
I put that in caps, because you can't do it on the fly. The only way to successfully grow root is to back it up, change the size, newfs the partition, restore the data, and put a new boot block on it. SunSolve has some good docs on it. Even if you use growfs(1M) you will run into problems with access and file locking as growfs locks the filesystem from all access, which is a problem for root(/).
Second, moving the directories is as simple as making a new partition, creating the filesystem, mounting it to a temporary mount point, and copying the directory structure to the new location. The switching the old device for the new one in the /etc/vfstab. init 6.
hope this helps.

  • Help Adding Hard Drives

Am trying to add a Seagate 250MB internal HD to a SIGG Ultra ATA133/100 Pro PCI card to the secondary IDE channel. I have a 200GB attached to the primary IDE channel which is running with no problems. I also have a HDD installed in the OEM uchannel which is the boot volume. Here is my problem: When I install the 250 HDD the computer boots up normally, recognizes and initializes the new drive with no problem. I am able to use it like any other drive. (Do not want it as the boot drive, only for storage} But after a while I get message on screen that the computer needs to be restarted and everything freezes up. This occurs everytime as long as the 250HDD is connected. I am writing this with the 250 disconnected to the power supply and I don't get the restart message anymore, but off course I can't now use my 250HDD. Can anyone tell me what is going on? Thanks

The boot volume is connected to the OEM ATA motherboard set to master.
I have the 200GB on #1 IDE channel of the Sigg card set to cable select on the end of the ribbon, nothing connected to the middle. This works with no problem.
I have the 250GB connected to the #2 IDE channel of the SIGG card on the end of the ribbon, nothing connected to the middle. Tried changing the jumper from cable select to master with no better results. Everything works for a while then I get message on screen that the computer needs to be restarted and everything freezes up. This occurs everytime as long as the 250HDD is connected.

Help, my hard drive is about to die and icloud won't let me sign in it's saying "you can't sign in becauseof server error"

The best approach would be to take the iPad to the school's IT person and see what is going wrong, why it will not accept your sign-in.  That person can make sure the userid and password are correct on the iPad.

  • Humming sound like a ground loop with added hard drives

I get a humming low freq Hum from my MacPro from adding or added hard drives. I am using Seagates 320's ( 3 - non raid ). The MP is under my desk and I think some may not hear what I do if sitting on a desktop.
I can't figure out if it's a ground loop issue, more than one drive spinning at the same speed or some mechanical isssue, like metal to metal contact.
Just one drive with the OS. The Hum if still there is not something I am aware of or bothers me. But your room must be quiet to hear ir best.

As I mentioned before, some people will not hear the "hum" if the MP is sitting on your desk ( or one hard drive ) . Mine is under a large desk that is 6' long, which kinda amplifies the sound and creates a sound box for the low freq hum. Some what like adding a subwoofer. But when you add one or more drives it will Hum and I think I know the cause.
One is there is no isolation ( ie rubber ) between the hard drive mounting system, the (metal) inside frame and outer (metal) case. This causes the MP to become or act like a tuning fork.
For those who do hear the hum sound, you can take both hands on either side of the MP and "squeeze" the sides and hear the sound get lower. Take your hands off and hear it louder. So the whole MP is vibrating or creating "noise" or low freq Hum ( tuning fork) .
The problem is some what resolved with using 2 drives if you mount one in bay 1 and the second in bay 4. ( not side by side ) In other words, the sound is amplified to a higher degree if you have matching drives ( non raid ) next to eachother.
This issue will drive you nuts if you have it or can hear it. The MP stock 2.66 thats a month old is what I have. Maybe some other Macs don't show this same sound.
Whats interesting is the metal case, both outer and inter being connected as a "rigid unit" is causing or lets say, making matters worse. The other of which I have not plotted the freq, I think is around 60hz which just so happens to be the same as your " AC power". So the humming could sound like a ground loop, when in fact the sound originates from the hard drive and is being magnfied by the rigid non insulated MP that might be inhancing it's own "resonate frequency"and acting like a tuning fork.
Now if I am right and the MP is reacting as a tuning fork. What is the solution? I don't really know. And I have not tried any so called fixes other than switching bays. I have some ideas. But only those that would not cause a warrenty issue.
I hope Apple will take a look at the issue and see if a real engineer can first identify the issue and come up with a solution.

  • System lockups/video corruption after adding hard drive

I have a first generation MacPro with an ATI video board. I recently added a 1 TB Western Digital "Black" hard drive, and I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the first drive onto the Black HD, which is now my new boot drive.
Ever since I did that, my system has become quite unstable and locks up frequently. What typically happens is I'll get a garbled single row of pixels in random places on the screen, and then within a few minutes it will lock up if I try to do anything that is graphics intensive such as using Expose's active screen corders to show my desktop, or opening a folder with dozens of different icons (like the Apps folder). It /seems/ like the problem is compounded when I am using FireFox, but that may simply be because I use it alot.
After the lockup the only way to regain control of the machine is to hold in the power button.
I've even gone as far as removing the original drive thinking that perhaps the system might be confused and is pulling drivers or whatever from the old drive. That didn't help.
Any thoughts as to what is happening here? It's seriously driving me nuts (not to mention wasting a lot of my time constantly having to restart the system).

Did you run Disk Warrior before and after cloning?
    Repaired permissions?
    Re-ran 10.5.7 combo update?
I'd even look in system profile - memory and see if there are errors showing (doesn't show errors from prior system boots though).
Cleaned out the X1900; add copper cooling kit $29, or look into another ATI card.
Before using any new drive, zero it. And if you have Windows and the drive is backed up or before you put files on it --- do a complete and thorough zero and extended test in Windows using WD's own Diagnostic utility - much better, reliable, and does map out bad blocks while Disk Utility and other OS X tools rarely do. But any new drive... I've had 3 out of 6 need such treatment.
As a test, reboot back on your original why not? I'd have done that just to narrow down the possibilities.

  • Need help after hard drive crash

My hard drive crashed recently and I was unaware that the iPod would not synch music that I added to it from my personal CD's. Because I added a lot of music this way (and only about 80 songs from iTunes) I am hoping there is a way to move these songs to my new computer/iTunes.
I looked at support here on apple.com and I could only find instructions on how to move the songs if I had my old computer working. I need instructions on how to move songs directly from my iPod to my new computer with out having to access my old iTunes/hard drive.
I already authorized my new version of iTunes to accept the previously purchased music and it successfully synched them to my new computer.
In going through the steps that I was able to on the support site it said to consolidate music to the iTunes folder. I was afraid to do this b/c it seemed as though it would only do this with the music that is currently on iTunes (which is only the previously purchased music I mentioned above).
Please excuse the rambling post but I am in need of some assistance and figured that this was the best place to find it!
Thanks in advance. P.S. I have Windows Vista (it's not an option in the OS dropdown below yet).

  • Adding Hard Drives to Tower

    Hi Group,
Well I finally took the plunge and purchased my Mac Pro Tower for our recording studio
    www.VisionRecordingStudios.com
I got so fed up with Windows XP and the unstable of that operating system thta I needed a more stable platform. Now my entire life is PC FREE!!!!
Anyway, I had a question about adding additional hard drive to the mac. I had recently added an internal hard drive to my PC and I would like to take that drive out, format it and install it as a secondary drive in the tower. Is this possible?
It a western digital black...here is the link
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=733
just a standard SATA drive. I would assume it would work in the tower correct? I didn't purchased additional drives when I bought the tower due to the cost and I was hoping to re-use these form the PC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

Well that's great news!! I have 2 internal 500 gig hard drives I can erase and install in the mac as my back ups for my recording studio. GOD I am so happy I am finally moving to mac in our studio.
in 2009 I have gotten rid of my office pc and purchased an I-mac and sold my laptop and got a macbook pro. I love them both!! Absolute no issues with them and they are about as plug and play as you get. The last investment was in our studio. I was using a year old dell with XP pro and it was nothing but a nightmare. Loosing usb ports, crashing during sessions, you name it and it happened.
I know I will never buy another PC product again!!
Thanks for your help with my hard drive question

  • Adding hard drive?

    Hello
I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to add a second hard drive to my Quicksilver G4/867 (2001). It currently has the original single IBM 60GB ATA66 7200rpm hard drive installed.
I'm thinking that since the computer never sleeps (I run my own little 5-account personal mailserver for the family, and I think the network intrusion detection software is adding entries to its log files frequently enough that the hard drive could never sleep even if it wanted to), that having a second internal hard drive to backup the entire original drive, perhaps as a mirrored RAID, would be a good idea.
That said, any recommendations on what to get, how to install it, how to configure for mirrored RAID without destroying everything on original drive, possible vendors (as a mirrored RAID, wouldn't I also want, essentially, an identical drive (IBM G0GB, ATA66, 7200rpm), which I am having big-time trouble locating)?
Or perhaps just having it as a second standalone hard drive as a periodically updated copy of the OEM drive, that I make backups to once a week or whatever, would be a better way to go? Then, how would I make it bootable, should the OEM drive fail?
Thanks in advance for any help/guidance/recommendations!
    j.v.

Yup! It arrived last week -- a 60GB ST360021A -- picked it up on eBay for $65 (includes shipping) -- allegedly brand new. Installed it last weekend. The only thing about the install, I couldn't get one of the bracket mounting screws in because all screws were side install, and the one in the rear outside corner I couldn't get a screwdriver to. So it's only got three screws holding it in place. Disk formatted right up with Disk Utility. Did a "write zeros to disk first" option to ensure any bad blocks would be mapped out. The Quicksilver model of Mac has the spare power and data cable connectors on the same cables that go to the primary drive, and all you have to do is just remove the jumper on the drive to make the new second drive a "slave" drive. After having read a number of posts here, I decided against a mirrored RAID install, and instead downloaded a crippleware backup utility called SuperDuper. Made a bootable clone that I verified boots up, can read/write files to, etc. I've mailed the shareware fee because it appears there are a lot of convenient options (scheduling unattended backups, "smart" back up that only modifies (on the target disk) what's changed on the source disk since the last backup, etc.). There are probably cheaper-priced but equivalent backup utilities out there, but this one had a pretty decent report card, both overall and as of recent, on versiontracker and macupdate so that's what I got. Also, I keep an administrative account on the computer separate from all the regular user accounts, so in Terminal, I changed the file permissions on /Volumes/Seagate so there were no "world" privileges -- that keeps it from showing up on the desktop of, or in Finder windows of, regular user group accounts. But both primary and backup drive show up on, and are accessible via, the desktop and Finder window of the admin account.

  • Slow Boot after added hard drives in RAID 0

    Hi,
My Mac Pro used to boot very fast (from Bong to Login screen).
After installing a RAID0, it takes much longer to boot (x5).
When powering on, after the BONG, the grey screen appears and it seems frozen for a while ~30seconds. While grey screen is still on, I can hear the RAID0 hard drives finally waking up and starting to spin (I believe that they are the RAID0 hard drives because I can hear the startup disk just after the BONG). Once the MacOSX splash screen is displayed, everything goes very fast. Progress bar takes <2s to finally display login screen.
I suspect an incompatibility of the hard drives firmware with the Mac Pro even if those are very popular drives.
The Mac Pro is also sometime very slow to shutdown and when it occurs, I can hear the same sound of the drives waking up and starting to spin again.
I have disabled the hard drive sleep option in the power settings.
Here is my configuration. Disk4 has been added after the RAID0 and hasn't changed the issue. Please help.
    Disk1: (Startup Disk)
    Capacity: 149.05 GB
    Model: ST3160812AS P
    Revision: 3.BQH
    Disk2: RAID0 - slice1
    Capacity: 298.09 GB
    Model: ST3320620AS
    Revision: 3.AAJ
    Disk3: RAID0 - slice2
    Capacity: 298.09 GB
    Model: ST3320620AS
    Revision: 3.AAJ
    Disk4:
    Capacity: 698.64 GB
    Model: ST3750640AS
    Revision: 3.AAE
    Regards,
    Guillaume

I am still booting off of the same drive as before I added the RAID so RAID disk doesn't appear in disk control panel but I went there and reselected my initial MacOSX installation folder on Drive0. It seems to have improved things quite a bit. Was it just looking for other boot partitions on all hard drives on startup? I don't know why this setting would have changed when adding drives into the box.
    Thanks.

  • HELP!  Hard drive no longer recognized

Installed Lion on my MBP first day.  Everything worked great except that my TM backup would no longer work on my WD external hard drive, so I had no backup.  WD is supposed to be working on this.
Yesterday, while checking email I get the spinning wheel.  Spun for about 15 minutes so I did a hard boot.  (Held the button down until shutdown)
When the computer tried to come back, all I get is the apple screen with a spinning wheel again.  So I restart with option key down so I can look at the drives.  The drives shown are the Lion recovery disc, Bootcamp, and EFI boot disc.  Everything I read said I need to erase the Macintosh HD and reinstall OS.  I erased the disc, still no luck. When I run disc utility, verify disc, it says the volume MacintoshHD appears to be OK, but when I try to reinstall the origional OS from the DVD that came with my computer, it says the disc is not available.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can see it in the disk utility, but not in the install window. This is the part that I don't understand.
I don't understand it either. I think there may be issues involved in installing Lion on a drive with a Boot Camp partition. That's why I think you should start over with a blank drive. Restore everything except Boot Camp to the state it was in before you installed Lion. Go through the whole installation process again, and when everything is working, run Boot Camp in Lion if you wish.
By the way, for future reference, you made mistakes that may have made matters worse.
When an application hangs, force-quit it. Don't do a forced reboot except as a last resort.
If you can't boot, try booting in safe mode, or from the Lion recovery partition. Don't erase a boot volume except as a last resort.
You need at least two independent backups of all your data, one of which should be off-site.

  • Help - my hard drive is lying to me???

Today my computer was working fine except my iphoto seemed to have dissappeared, so I made a mistake I think and added library from an external hard drive and I think it copied the files onto my main hard drive? But the weird thing is that the pictures are nowhere to be found, but the space is gone? Meaning, my main internal hard drive says it is at capacity at 74 Gigs and when I get info on all folders inside it only adds up to 45 Gigs? Where is the missing Gigs?

  • HELP. new hard drive not recognized

    HELP!
guys, i badly need your help. i've been searching all over the internet and reading so many user groups already to search for answers to no avail.
I bought a new Western Digital 160GB Scorpio SATA hard drive. I wanted to upgrade my Macbook which only has 80GB as of now.
I cannot seem to install Mac OS X on it. Here's the problem:
    1. it is recognized as "Media" with 0 bytes capacity which I am really surprised why it's like that
    2. PARTITION: partition fails and i receive an error message saying that the "Device is not configured"
    3. ERASING: i also tried erasing it but it also fails; the message reads "The selected disk does not have enough capacity"
i really don't know what seems to be the problem. i can't use it, can't even format it, not partition it.
so now it's just sitting on my desk, useless. i want to use it badly though.
can someone help me please? thanks.

    Hi Paoj
You don't say if you have found that the new HD is Fat32 or not, so I will proceed assuming that it is FAT32. I will also proceed on the basis that there was nothing on the new drive already that you needed to keep or can't download.
    1) Open Disk Utility.
    2) Select your External Drive from the list presented
    3) Select the 'ERASE' tab then the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" option in the 'Volume Format:' box. In the box below, give the drive a name if you want to.
No need to bother with the 'Options' button etc.
    4) Select "ERASE'
This should rewrite your new drive in HFS+ (Journaled) format.
Assuming the above has worked for you -
The next step is optional, but careful consideration is recommended at this point in time because one can't change one's mind, say, months later.
    1) Still in Disk Utility, select the 'PARTITION' tab.
    2) Under 'Volume Scheme:" choose however many partitions (extra hard drives) you consider appropriate.
For instance, I have an 500gb External Drive partitioned into two drives of about half that size. One I have for expansion and has a bootable version of Panther on it. The other is my backup drive.

  • Help! hard drive failure and data recovery

I am a happy PC-traitor who has been using my Macbook successfully for over a year now. I love the Mac.
    Until now.
Last night, while downloading torrents onto my computer, it froze. I restarted. A blinking folder with a question mark was displayed. I tried resetting the PRAM. Disk Utility does not see my hard drive, so I cannot attempt to repair it.
In short, I think it's dead.
Disk recovery is so incredibly expensive! Can I stick the hard drive into an external housing and access the data via Firewire? Can I freeze it overnight? I'm desperate! I can't afford a data recovery service. Help!

If she's dead, she's dead. Could be a loose cable. If you boot from a DVD and DU can;t see the HD, that's usually a really bad sign.
If you are comfortable removing it, you can try something like
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
which will allow you to mount just about any HD via USB.
    You can try stuff like
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/download-mac-data-recovery.php
    http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    http://prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
And then there's DiskWarrior and TechTool.
Some of these may see HD's that won't mount and allow you to recover data.
Others may chime in with more detailed experiences.

  • Need Help Recovering Hard Drive Space on Disk Utility

I recently wanted to resize my Boot Camp hard drive partition as I did not need it to be 194 gb. In the process I screwed something up and now that space that was once my Boot Camp Partition is now "free space." My Mac Partition still says that I have 305 gb left and I am unsure how to expand this partition to get back that "grey" space. I've tried using Boot Camp Assistant, starting with Command+R after the "chime," and restoring my OSX (not completely however).
I need help in getting back this missing space. It seems that I have looked everywhere and although people seem to have a similar issue I can't figure it out.
Would restoring Mountain Lion completely by using a USB jump drive solve this problem? I have an external hard drive that uses Time Machine to back up my MacBook so a complete restore shouldn't be an issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
P.S. This is what my disk utility currently looks like...

You can try to use Boot Camp Assistant to completely remove the Windows partition but it might not work.
Simple fact is once you setup a Windows partition you can't fool with it at all, that is unless you use some add on program specifically designed to do that on a Mac computer. If you need to resize the Windows partition you first need to use BCA and remove the partition completely and then recreate it at the new size you want and reinstall Windows.
You might have to use Time Machine and backup your Mac partition then repartition the complete drive and then restore from that Time Machine backup. Then setup the Windows partition and reinstall Windows.

  • Please Help! Hard drive problem "Mystery Gb Space"

I recently ripped a lot of CD’s into itunes, so much that I filled up my hard drive. I cleaned up my music by deleting music I didn’t need. I also burned a majority of music to CD so that I could delete it off my hard drive. I have a 80gb hard dive; I freed up 20gb of space. I did not secure the trash when I deleted the music files. So for a while I had 20gb of free space, but a few days ago I looked at my istat pro and noticed that I now have a full hard drive again. I have not ripped any CD’s, downloaded any thing, or done any thing that would take up this much space. I contacted apple but all they would help me with was buying a plan. The only advice I was given was to secure trash. I would like to know where this “extra gb space” came from.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Get "Disk Inventory X" (it is freeware.)
    http://www.derlien.com/
It searches your hard drive and gives you a visual representation of all of your hard drive space usage. It seperates each file type into groups of colors etc so you can see where you have 15gb of mp3's and such. You can use it to open finder windows to those files. Just be careful not to delete any system files with it!
Also, you can save yourself about 7gigs right off the bat by deleting all of the sound files your computer comes with for garageband (unless you use garageband.) I know I don't, and I couldnt believe they ship these machines packed with almost 7 gigs of sound files that you may or may not use...
