HELP!!! Energy Saver ...Automatically start at ...Shutdown at ...corrupted

A while ago in the Energy Saver settings I ticked the box to start my iMac every day at 7 and to shut down at 23. Although I unticked the boxes, it still starts at 7, so I think the preference file is corrupted. I also tried to change times, but without success. Which one is it. Are there other/better solutions ?

Are you looking in the right Library folder? You need the one at the top level of your boot drive ("/Library") not the one in your home folder ("~/Library")

  • Energy Saver settings not controlling shutdown

I've reset the SMU and PRAM and my problem continues to return. The computer shuts down in about 30 minutes regardless of what settings I put into Energy Saver. The only way I can prevent it is to open an image in Photoshop and then open an edit screen in a NIK plug-in. It still tries to shutdown but this stops it. I've noticed if Lightroom is running as well that it gets shutdown (even if playing a slideshow) and then the computer tries to quit but Photoshop stops it.
This has been going on for several months. I posted previously here and only response was to reset the above, which I do periodically. Any other suggestions? Is this a software or hardware problem?
I just want control back of my Energy Saver settings. It's almost impossible to download anything that is of any size - say an Apple 150Mb update.

    Hi Mel
Set Computer sleep to Never, Display Sleep to say 10 minutes and uncheck the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"
Then click the Schedule... button and make sure that the boxes for Startup, Wake, Sleep, Restart, Shutdown are unchecked and click OK.

  • Energy Saver Ignoring Start Up

I have been trying to get my computer to start up based on the Energy Saver settings, but it seems to be ignoring them. The computer has no problem shutting down from the energy saver, but won't ever start up on its own.

Using the energy saver to turn on, is your MBP turned off or in sleep mode?
Is the schedule set to +"start up"+ or "wake" mode?

Try running +repair disk+ from your *software install DVD* and afterwards, run +repair permissions+ *from your HD.*

  • Energy saver not starting the MM at times, holds the log a clue?

I have a MM as a server, normal OS, that sometimes does not start in the morning.  It is set to shut down at 23.00 and does so all evenings at 23.10.  However this morning (01-10-2011) it did not come on again and I was looking through the log and found some strange stuff.
    like:
    29/09/2011 12:38:06 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker[848] FolderManager: Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/dev/null/' path=/dev/null/ err=-36 uid=505 euid
    and
29/09/2011 12:38:11    /Applications/Utilities/QuickTime Player 7.app/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Player 7[262]    DTUninstall(), the current deferred task 0x267454 being removed is also currently executing its dtAddr routine, so unexpected things may result  ( Radar #4555679 ).
    and
    29/09/2011 23:30:02    mds[66]    (Error) Task: QueryClose failed (-1) for store <MDSStoreToken: 0x411050>{storeID:0x6b000010 registered:YES private:NO age:14h18m40s uuid:5D7AEDC7-4772-4AB5-A1D9-5C5AF631FBFF machPort:0x00004007}
Now if it hangs for some reason I have a cron script that kills all at 23.30.  However I installed this via Cronnix and just checked and it is no longer there in Cronnix.  however the machine turns of at 23.30, so this puzzled me too. Is there a way to see in cron if there is a script there?  And remove it?
Two questions, is there anything in the log (I am not an expert here) that should not be or could cause this.
second one, if i do a cron killall, would this effect the energy control panel and for the machine not to start the next morning?
    Looking forward to your wisdom.

  • Please help, energy saver problems

I have a problem with my imac G5 (2004). Whenever I put it to sleep and leave it for awhile, it will now wake up. I have to unplug the G5 and reinsert the plug and start over to get it going again. I tried resetting the (PRAM) and the (SMU) but no such luck. I also unplugged it for a good 5 minutes and replugged it and still nothing. The articles with this problem only applied to version 9 and not X (I have version X). Please any info. that you have would be most appreciative!!!

sorry that should have read "I'm running IE 6.0.28 with version 1.5.0_02 of the JRE"

  • Automatically change energy saver

Is there anyway that I can have energy saver automatically change the setting to "Highest" when I start up Halo? I noticed a huge performance leap when I changed to highest in the middle of playing halo and was wondering if there were an easier way to change the settings.

Sort of, yes. For 99% of the users and applications, it works pretty good. However for demanding applications and games (like Photoshop or in this case, Halo) Apple recommends that you use the "Highest" setting to get optimal performance:
    From the developer docs :
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G5/iMacG5May05/iMacG5.pdf
Note: For best performance when using professional applications with high demand on the system
(such as Final Cut Pro or Logic), you may want to set the processor/bus speed option to highest.
Games are really hit or miss, regarding performance. A lot of modern games offload much of the heavy lifting to the GPU. In many cases, the load on the CPU is not constant so the Automatic setting throttles everything back. However there is a "lag" time in between, so it's not an instant change back and forth from Automatic to Highest. So in order to get the most even, constant performance, Highest is recommended.

  • Energy saver keeps coming unlocked... sleep won't work

I've noticed when I arrive in the morning that my Mac Pro is awake.  But the Time Machine log shows it had been an entire hour since TM was active.
I researched various places (including here) and deleted the preference for com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
But the problem persists.  What's more mysterious is that even though I lock the energy saver padlock, when I go back the next morning it is unlocked.
Any idea what's going on here?

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Energy Saver Panel: Machine not automatically starting up in the morning

My blind server (MM) is set to start every morning at 06.00. (via the 'Schedule' button in the Energy Saver control Panel).

  • Please Help: Cannot open Energy Saver on iBook

When I click on the Energy Saver preference pane on my iBook (dual USB) G3 (running OS 10.3.9, with a 20 GB hard drive with 13 GB of space left), I get the message "Preferences Error, Could not load Energy Saver." This just suddenly started happening a couple of days ago.
I have searched this forum as well as Google and have found no information about this problem. After I opened Disk Utility while booted from my external hard drive, I ran First Aid and Repair Permissions on the iBook. No change in the problem with Energy Saver.
Here are the additional steps I've taken:
    1. As a test, I created a new user account and logged in under that account. Still got the same message when trying to open Energy Saver.
    2. I attached my iBook to my iMac G5 via firewire cable and booted my iBook into target disk mode. Then I ran Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro on the iBook. Both programs gave the iBook a clean bill of health.
    3. Via the Find command, I searched my hard drive for any files with "energy" in the title. No hits.
    4. I went to my ~/Library/Preferences Folder and found the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file. Removed that file, restarted the iBook. Still could not access Energy Saver.
    5. I put the System Preferences application into a folder called Sys Prefs Old. Dragged the System Preferences application from my iMac into the Applications folder on my iBook. Opened this new System Preferences application. Clicked on Energy Saver pane. Still got the message "Could not load energy saver."
    6. Inserted OS X 10.3 install disc into iBook. Used Pacifist to re-install just the System Preferences application. The application was an older version than the one that had been giving me problems. Opened this application and clicked on Energy Saver pane. Still got the message "Could not load energy saver."
I'm at my wit's end. I can no longer change any of my energy settings on my iBook. If anyone can make a suggestion, I would certainly appreciate it. If your suggestion has to do with using Terminal, please talk me through it in baby talk because I've never used Terminal.

It may help to look in your log files to find out why your applications are quitting.
The simplest way to look at log files is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "console.log" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom to Clear both windows.
Now try to open the Energy Saver preference pane and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". Click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar. Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • Setting Shutdown time in Energy Saver

I'm trying to set a shutdown time in the Energy Saver on an additionaliMac G5 I have. The wakeup time works fine; however, every time I go into the Energy Saver, the lock is unlocked even though I've locked it when I set the time and closed out. The computer stays on past the time I've chosen. I've run disk permissions and Disk Warrior and still the problem exists. Everything else works fine.

I don't think the change of administrator could do any difference, unless there's data corruption in the user Library folder.
Just in case, the auto shut down will not work:
When administrator is not logged in.
When the system is sleeping at the shut down time.
When an automatic backup is being performed, or certain obscure underlying system task is running.

  • HT1776 I have the Energy Saver setting set to NEVER on both options, and my computer STILL goes to SLEEP after 1 hour. Please help!

I have the Energy Saver setting set to NEVER on both, and my computer STILL goes to SLEEP after 1 hour. Please help!
My COMPUTER goes to sleep and disrupts my apple tv all the time. How can I fix this?

That you are getting the BONG is a good sign, it's unlikely to be hardware if you are able to hear that.
Start by running SW update. It's not that there is a specific fix, but when updating it may rewrite some system files which may get this going again purely as a side affect. Worth a go, and should not harm the system.
Try reset the PRAM - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Hopefully one of these quick fixes works, otherwise we'll need to try isolate the issue next - so if still having a problem, I'd try create a new user and login as that user to see if the issue persists (which will tell us if it's system wide or user specific)

  • Energy Saver Start up failure

I have tried on several occasions to try to get my MacBook Pro to Start up at a predetermined time using the Energy Saver Function. However it will not Start up under its own battery power. The goal is to make the MBP an awesome alarm clock that not only plays music upon Start up, but fetches my e-mail, and pulls up my favorite news sites. This of course done with automator.
I did some research on the web via Google, to see if other owners have this issue. The MBP will Startup if plugged into AC Power at a predetermined time with Energy Saver, however if I leave it unplugged, with the lid open, it fails to Start up even with a full charge on the battery.
I called Apple Support, but the tech I worked with for weeks said it would be addressed. However I have not heard back from them, and my ticket was opened back in April of 2006.
Even the tech tried the same scenario and his didn't boot either. Can someone try this on theirs to see if it worked? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I want to automatically start the oracle database at the time linux server and shutdown the database on shutdown linux server.

    Hi,
    I can share my scripts:
    1) /home/oracle/start_oracle.sh
#Script should be ran as Oracle user
    cd /tmp
    export ORACLE_SID=orcl
    export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/ora9i
    lsnrctl start
    sqlplus -S /nolog <<ENDSQL
    connect / as sysdba
    startup
    exit
    ENDSQL
    emctl start dbconsole
    isqlplusctl start
NOTE: emctl and isqlplus are optional
    2) /home/oracle/stop_oracle.sh
#Script should be ran as Oracle user
    cd /tmp

Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
