Help! External LaCie hard drive 1.6TB suddenly won't appear on desk top.

From the beginning: I was in the process of backing up onto my LaCie external disk using the FireWire 800 cable. (The model is a LaCie 1.6 Tera-byte, forgot the brand name of this model, but it can connect via FireWire 800 or 400. I'm using the FireWire 800 cable on my PowerBook 15 inch G4, 1.5 GHz). While it was backing up, I connected a Flash card reader via a USB port. After I disconnected the Flash card properly by "ejecting" it, a few seconds later or maybe it was 30 seconds later (not sure), the uploading to the LaCie disk stopped. I could still access it via the desktop, but the folders showed nothing inside them, just blank. Then everything slowed down, followed by the "spinning beach ball" of dread. I restarted everything, but the LaCie icon did not show up on the desktop afterwards.
Using the Apple System Profiler, the LaCie disk appears there, but when I click "Verify Disk" it says "Invalid node structure" and "Volume LaCie disk needs to be repaird." When I click "Repair Disk" it says "Invalid node structure" and "Volume check failed," and after that "1 HFS Volume checked - 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
I tried FileSalvage software, and I let it run for about 20 minutes and it scanned up to 24 GB and seems to have the ability to recover files, though it does not recover the file names, it seems, and the process is extremely slow for over 600 GBs to recover. I am wondering if there is something to reset or redo, so I can access over 2 full months of work, which I will immediately backup on DVD disks. Thanks for any help!

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.
Ummmm....

  • External Lacie Hard Drive Won't Show On Desktop

    Hello,
I have a LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface. I know this topic has been posted before but nothing seems to be working for me. The hard drive will not show on my desktop, but it does show up in the Disk Utility. It's there, but I can't access it.
I have disconnected the drive many times. I have repaired the permissions on both drives more than once. I have swapped cables between firewire and USB. I have tried shutting down everything, unplugging everything and waiting 15 mintues before turning everything on. (Three times) (I have tried turning the computer on before connecting the drive, no good. I tried again with the drive already plugged in, no good, and also tried turning the computer on, then plugging the drive in and turning it on.
I have another LaCie Hard Drive, The one that has the design by F.A. Porsche and is 250GB. This drive connects perfectly. I don't understand. Hope someone out there can help me out, take care,

  • Folder disappeared on External Lacie Hard Drive - Mountain Lion

    Hi
I had a folder named "Digital Pictures" on my external hard drive where i have stored with "year-month-day folder name" as a folder name. Before I went on a trip last friday, I had copied all the files from my EOS memory card and formatted them on my camera.
Now after the trip, I am trying to copy files, and I see the total folder "Digital Pictures" itself is disappeared. It has thousands of very precious images of my 2 kids and over 7 years of photographs.
I can't locate them. Restarted my mac (Mountain Lion), connected my hard drive on a different mac pro laptop, and I don't see it. I have never deleted it even by mistake which am sure.
Last thursday I had copied lots of files to this folder. That's the latest thing happened in that folder. When I search through spot light for the files modified recently on JPEG kind, I don't see anything on last week.
It's very frustrating, and MAC has been recently failing on me a lot.
If any of you have experienced this type of situation, please assist. Thanks a lot.

    A. Disk Warrior: When you hold OPTION on the "Rebuild" directory it does a full deep scan of actual files and goes by what it can find on the hard drive. Has been known to take days and succeed in some instances.
    WHERE ARE REDUNDANT SETS BACKUP?
I see and have to wonder, and with 2TB disk drives for $120 (WD RED NAS) there is no reason not to: and data should be on clone, Time Machine, and one other and always have a set beside your work main data, that is off line at all time.
    Clone every drive
Use more than one Time Machine drive (just swap one out from time to time so you have a "last month" or something).
DW may not help. It may also.
Data Rescue 3 might. It has a demo.
Using the drive is out of the question for now.
And a dozen years ago I came to see way more, too many, LaCie related issues to ever recommend let alone use theirs (and I was a LaCie Quantum Computer buyer back in early 90's)
So go shopping. Some repacement and spare recovery drives and software and cases - one place to look,
http://www.macsales.com/firewire or Amazon - I buy a lot of WD drives, but never touched a "MyBook" - drives and cases are different matter.
It has thousands of very precious images of my 2 kids and over 7 years of photographs.

  • External Lacie hard Drive would not Mount on my imac

    HI all,
I have had this Hard Drive for a few years now, worked great, no issues at all. Even after upgrading to 10.8 it continued to work.
A few days ago my cleaning lady moved the computer and disconected the Lacie drive (connected via Firewire) and since then I am not able to mount it again.
I see it on my Disk Utility but when I press "mount" I get an error messege "the disc can not be mounted, try First aid" but non of the buttons on First Aid work.
So far I tried re-settign the SMC, of course shutting down and starting back up numerus times but nothing.
I even tried working through Terminal, it can see the drive and its partition and when I looked online I saw a few commends to try and mount it, but nothing worked so far.
Here is what i wrote and got in terminal:

The drive is clearly there, it's working, I hear and feel it working (spining) but can't mount it.
What can I do in order to mount it and get my data of of it?
this is extermely important as my itunes library is there. PLEASE HELP SOON!
    Thanks!

    Update:
so, I shelled out the $100 to get Disk Warrior, and got the following messege:
Directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unspported
This disk is not a  macintosh Disk
and further down the list it said: File system: Windows/PC
All of this is of course distressing as this has been a Mac disk for several years now, not to mention the $100 gone in the wind.
    what should I do now?
I have Parallels, would that help? is there a way of mounting the disk on there?
Should I try connecting it to a PC?
    Please Help me!!

  • Store Photos on external LaCie hard drive vs. Mac Mini?

I have a Mac Mini purchased in 2006 and a LaCie external hard drive. The combination was bought primarily for video editing. Now I am considering transferring a large number of jpeg photos from my PC. I have been told that it is better to put them on the Mac Mini rather than the LaCie. Any comments?

If you have a lot of them you would probably be better off storing them on the external drive.
However, no matter where they physically reside, don't forget to have two or three backups just in case of a catastrophe.

  • Can 2 computers use the same external lacie hard drive?

    hi thanks for any replies.
working on some fcp projects ,we were wondering if its possible for 2 computers to be using the same external lacie terrabyte (lacie d2)
    cheers
    simon

Not at the same time, if that's what you mean, unless you connect the drive to one computer and share it via file sharing to the other computer. To have a drive connected to more than one computer at the same time, the drive has to have special circuitry to arbitrate the multiple requests; such drives are usually marked as SAN (storage area network) drives.

  • Can I format and use a Hard Drive for my mac if removed from a Desk Top PC

    Hi All,
I wondered if you can help with some advise. I have a mackbook and love it, will never go back to pc. But, I have a desk top pc with a fairly sizable Hard Drive in it. Even though I also have a WD external Hard Drive for my macbook back up, would I be able to use my old desk top hard drive if I found a case for it to make it an 2nd external hard drive?
Would I be able to format it for use with my mac? Or is it the bin for all the hardware?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Matt

It'd work just fine. Apple uses pretty much the exact same parts every other computer maker does. The one exception is now they have a temp sensor cable connection built onto drives. Before they just stuck a little plastic clip on them at a specific spot. Other than that, it's no different from any other SATA drive you might buy at the likes of Best Buy or NewEgg. So as long as you partition the drive into a format readable by Mac OS X, there shouldn't be any problems.

  • Suddenly getting message that my system doesn't support final cut. this is after hooking up an external lacie hard drive and downloading a new lacie shortcut button software. i had also safe started the computer.

I am suddenly getting an error message when i try to start up final cut pro 7. it won't let me anymore, saying i don't meet system requirements. this started after I hooked up my lacie external drive and found the shortcut button to not be working properly. i then turned off my computer and safe started it. that didn't help. so i downloaded a new lacie shortcut button software. then i could no longer start final cut. also, my screen shots on my desktop appear blank when i try to open them now.

if your using the Lacie as a scratch drive for Final Cut, uninstall the backup software and blue button control utility to use the drive properly to save and read media files.
Lacie blue button drives are for automated backup and dont perform with FCP
see this from Lacie on uninstalling the preference utility:

  • HELP - External USB Hard Drive Will Not Mount

Ok, I've read through MANY other external HD mounting problems but can't find anything that helps me with my specific problem. Here goes...
I have all of my graphic/music files on the HD of my Mac. I want to copy these files to a drive so that I can clean it off and sell it. I will be transferring the files to a PC.
I purchased a USB external HD from Best Buy four months ago. I plugged it in and it asked me to reformat the drive as Macintosh. I took it back and had them reformat the drive as FAT32 so that I could use it on both systems. I had this done twice because it didn't work the first time. Well, it didn't work the second time either but they tested it on their Macs and it worked so I think it's a problem with my Mac.
The drive is recognized in both the System Profiler and the Disk Utility. When I try to mount it in the Disk Utility, nothing happens and it goes back to "Select a disk or volume".
I would like to get this problem fixed without spending any more money on it. I've contacted Mac techs and they usually charge $100/hour and can't guarantee how long it would take to fix. That, and I don't know anyone I trust with my precious data.
I'm beyond frustrated with this as I have been dealing with it for over six months now. I have tried unplugging and replugging but nothing seems to work. I've tried all USB ports (keyboard, monitor, tower) and various different power outlets (wall, power strip, etc...). The data is irrecplaceable and I'm nervous that it just sits on the computer without being backed up. If anyone has any ideas for me to try, please let me know. I am at my wits end.
Also, now it seems that Apple System Profiler "unexpectedly quits" when I try to open it. Any ideas???
    Thank you

Here is a USB faq. Hope it helps!
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for your unepectedly quit issue.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
Try the repair first. if no luck try things in this Unexpectedly Quit link.

  • In Snow Leopard   Pages'09 files suddenly do not appear on desk top. What to do?

    Hello,
When I open a template in My Templates (Pages'09) and want to save it to the desktop, all of a sudden that doesn't work anymore. The file can be found with Spotlight but I can't have it on the desktop.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Ben

Sounds to me like you have a corrupt plist file.
First thing I would try would be to simply relaunch your Finder and see if that sorts your problem.
    >ForceQuit>Finder>Relaunch
If not navagate to com.apple.desktop.plist and delete.
    Finder>GO>(option Key)Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
or in Finder shortcut ( ⇧⌘G) copy and paste:
    ~/Library/Preferences/
    delete the com.apple.desktop.plist
    Relaunch your Finder again.
The deleted plist will rebuild itself to default setting after Finder relaunch
Report back on your sucess or failure.

  • Need help finding lost hard drive space on my Power Mac G4

I have a Power Mac G4 that is just about out of hard drive space. Why? I have no idea. I only have about 7 MB left of the 512 MB that came on the machine. I have backed up most pictures, documents, etc... to an external hard drive and have barely anything left on the desk top. Does anyone know what might be working 'behind the scenes' to eat up hard drive space or what I can do to gain any back? I'm not a huge 'techie' so any advice past 'empty the trash' would probably be helpful.
Thanks very much for anything you can do for me.

I believe you mean GB instead of MB when referring to hard drive size/space.

  • My Lacie Hard Drive is no longer being recognized by my MacBook, please help.

    Hi all,
I have a Lacie external hard drive (LaCie Rugged XL eSATA 3Gb/s | USB 2.0) that I have been using on my MacBook (timemachine) (late 2008, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.9.1). One day it stopped being recognized, not showing up on the desk top, the disk utility program, etc.
I Googled many articles, blogs and support communities but have yet to find any solution. I also went to the Lacie support site and followed the trouble shooting instructions - changed my power source, usb cable, and tried the drive out on 3 different computers. The results: The drive works fine on the other computers (OS X and Windows) using the same power and usb cords. So Lacie recommened I contact Apple but my MacBook is not under warranty so I have decided to try my luck with the Apple Support Community. If any one has had this problem or knows the solution, please let me know. I would like to continue to use my MacBook with this Lacie hard drive.
    Thanks

    Hi Dibenkorn,
Yes, both USB ports are not recognizing this lacie external hard drive. I also tried the SMC reset but that did not change anything. I have another external hard drive (smaller one) and it works on this computer fine and like I said before the Lacie works fine on my other (older) MacBook. I just can not figure out what went wrong or what happened...
