HELP!!! My iMac (20" alum) is giving folder/question mark on start up. I found the original Leopard cd(10.5) that came with the iMac and attempted to boot from the disc...

The installer didn't find the hard drive at first, but disk utility was able to find it. So I repaired the disk, and permissions, then quit utility.
The installer was then able to locate the hard drive so I went ahead and reinstalled leopard in hopes that I could use the computer.
However, half way through my reinstall, it froze. So I tried booting it back up from the disc, yet now neither the installer or the disk utility can locate my hard drive.
Is there anything I can do at this point other than buying a new hard drive?

Its starting to sound like a failed hard drive. If disk utility can't find the internal hard drive, it probably dead.

  • What is this thing that came with my iMac?

I just got a new iMac (quad core, i5). There is a curious object in the packaging that I don't know what it is, and it isn't discussed in the instructions. It's a thin piece of black felt-like material, square shaped, with the 4 corners folded inward. I have no idea what this thing does, or what I should do with it. What is it? It's way too thin to be a mousepad, I think.

*To clean your iMac display, do the following:*
    ● Shut down your iMac and disconnect all cables.

Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

Yes, I've been using it for months. And I can charge other devices with it. (my iPhone) but something weird just happened..... I kept on pluging it in the iPod and sometimes it would start to chàrge then sometimes it won't charge. Charges every time with the iPhone though.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher

  • I purchased my iMac using the same (and only) Apple ID I use to purchase apps. Third-party apps update fine, but the apps that came with my iMac (iPhoto, iMovie, etc) bring up a message saying I have to log in with the account I used to purchase them.

I used my only Apple ID to purchase my iMac (Intel-based one).  I've never been able to update core apps that came with it.  I can update third party apps I've bought (like Coda), but when I try to update Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie and so on, a popup message appears saying "You have updates available for other accounts" and "Log in with the account you used to purchase this app in order to update it", or similar (see screenshot above).
The OS seems to get its updates fine - it's just the core apps from the App Store.
I've only ever had one Apple ID, so I have no idea what to do.  I went to ask the Genius bar at my local Apple store, and they couldn't help, and insisted that I must have purchased the iMac using a different account, but I definitely didn't.  There are a few posts on non-Apple forums of this happening to other people, so it must be a rare bug.
I'm a little concerned it may affect my ability to update from Lion to Mountian Lion.  Can anyone help?
    Dan

Have you done a Disk Repair and a Disk Permissions Repair?
If that doesn't resolve the problem I would suggest calling customer support about this issue as it is most likely on their (Apple's) end that the problem exists.

  • The mouse that came with my imac does not work very well in a window virtual machine

I finally got Windows 7 on my iMac and am using FusionVM.  I installed one of my favorite games and the mouse goes soooooo slow I cannot use the game.  Any suggestions?  I am using the mouse that came with the iMac, magic mouse(??).

I have already tried that.  The mouse speed on the iMac is good.  The mouse speed in other Windows7 programs is good.  The problem arose when I tried to play Zuma's Revenge using Windows7.  This is the first game I have loaded since setting up the virtual machine.

  • I am having problems with my optical corded mouse that came with my iMac (it's about 2 years old) It stops working periodically, and I can't figure out how to fix it; doesn't look like I can open it to clean it, or anything like that.

My corded optical mouse (model A 1152),which came with my desktop  iMac, stops working periodically.  The little tracball may work scrolling down a page, but not up, sometimes, and I have yet to figure out how to fix it, or why it happens at all.  Is there someone who has had that problem, and what did you do?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it over a microfiber cloth.

  • Blinking file folder question mark on start up!

My mac was working fine I shut it down because the mouse froze like it does some time. It turned back on with a white screeen and and a blinking file folder with a question mark on it and stays that way until it shuts down! Its a white screen behind it and it makes the start up noise. What is going on and how can I fix it? I already kept it off for a while then took out the battery.. any other suggestions?

I got this same message after using Disk Utilities to create a new partition formatted in FAT 32, booting from my windows XP CD, reformatting that partition to NTFS, and installing Windows XP on that partition. (So I can dual-boot without using Boot Camp Beta, which is expired)
I worked around it just fine by holding the "alt" key when booting, which (after entering my firmware password) allows me to select the boot partition. It's like I somehow selected "Neither" for my default startup disk.
It's possible that your problem goes beyond this.
By the way, in my Windows reformat, I did end up deleting several 200 MB partitions that appeared on my drive...it looked like this:
    (partition) (size) (name) (file format)
Partition 1: 198 MB [unknown empty
    Partition 2: 250000 MB [Windows FAT32
Partition 3: 202 MB [unknown empty
partition 4: 850000 MB [Unknown unknown
this one is formatted in the mac file system, but XP (of course) doesn't
    recognize it....
partition 5: 201 MB [unknown empty
Anybody know what's going on here? I sucessfully merged the first three from the XP cd, but I don't know what's up with Disk Utility and why it leaves these spaces after partitioning.....

  • HT1476 I'm using the Apple Brand cord and power adapter that came with my iPhone 5C, but I still get the "This accessory is not compatible" error. Any ideas as to why?? Please help!

I have no idea why it does that. I have it plugged into an extension chord if that helps.

Plug adapter directly into wall socket. If still problem, all components are covered by Warranty. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone, wall adapter, and Lightning USB cable to Apple for resolution.

Make sure your computer is running smoothly on Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
    Create a Backup Before Upgrading...
Then check your Mac is compatible with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.x
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion

  • I purchased iphone 5s in t mobile store in Philladelphia and paid 700$ but it is locked. The phone is now in Serbia. The t mobile employee told us that it would work abroad and we believed her because the price was as for simfree device. Help!

We purchased iphone 5s as a gift in T mobile shop inhilladelphia last week. When we asked employee will it work on local carrier in Serbia, she saod YES. She also mentioned that it would be locked to T mobile in the US. Si ce we did not have time to wait for simfree device from Apple store we made the purchase and it costed 702$. But when the phone got to Serbia it simply doesn't work. Now do we have the basis for serious complaint as we were mislead or shoudl we throw away the phone?
The original sim card is in USA.

TMO does not sell unlocked iPhones.
The only source of unlocked iPhones in the US is the Apple store.
Uncertain why you suspected it would work outside the US when, based on your own words, the employee clearly stated the device is carrier locked.  The only one to blame here is yourself.
Return the device for a full refund.
Purchase an iPhone in the country where it will be used.
