Help! Network Nightmare

Hi. I'm living in an old office building with a lot of other people. We have a cable modem in the basement which feeds ethernet to a router upstairs, and that router feeds two others. At any given moment the system might have as many as 8-10 users.
Very frequently, the internet quits working, and any combination of resetting modem, routers and computers won't get it going again, until poof, at some point we can connect again.
Our paltry knowledge of setting up a proper network is surely to blame. Can anyone suggest some solutions?

hammondbeck,
First, you posted this the iPhone Internet and Networking section.
Second, are all of the routers doing NAT, if so that can cause some routing issues, but only for those connecting to the routers that are already behind a router.
Third, if you connect directly to the first router in the series, does it have any network utilities?
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

  • HELP networking & file shareing with FCP!

Greetings! I am producing/editing a low budget (low level of experience) documentary and I'm trying to build a network where multiple users can edit off of a single hard drive array. Currently, we have a two Lacie firewire drives (1.5 TB in total) connected to a G5 via fw 800, connected to a 1GB switch via cat 6, then connected to multiple G4s.
We have tried using OSX's built in networking devices, and additionally have tried using “NFS” via a Linux server. Both attempts were unsuccessful for the multiple G4s. We can load the project (at a painfully slow rate), and play a clip, but after only a few seconds, we get dropped frames.
Can anybody help networking FCP to multiple workstations via a 1GB CAT 6 Network? Fibre is currently not in the budget.
Does anybody know the "fastest" way to make a G5 function as a server?
    Thank you!

After hours upon hours of playing around with my 1GB ethernet, I WAS able to get it to work! It has to do with the way final cut manages it's project file.
The solution was to copy the project file off of the master computer onto the terminals, and reconnect the media from there. Previously I had been importing the clips, or using a project file already on a terminal... etc.
Last night I had 3 different computers running (one of them on 10/100) sequences off the same media with no problems.
    Thanks for the reply!

  • Networking nightmare

I'm having something of a nightmare getting my mixed Mac and Windows home network working. I have external drives connected to both the Mac machines and I need to be able to access them and the contents of the intenal HDD from a couple of Windows XP machines for backup and file sharing purposes.
I initially got the windows sharing enabled and that allowed me to access the home directories, but it didn't allow me to access the external drives. So I installed Sharepoint on both Mac machines and tried to create additional shares.
That seemed to work in part, but I kept getting access rights warnings which manually going in and giving r/w rights to everyone didn't seem to help resolve. So int he end, I kind of gave up on that and deleted all of the Sharepoint shares.
Now when I try to access the Macs from the Windows machines, they either don't appear on network neighbourhood or if they do appear, when I try to access them they demand a password for a guest user (e.g. iMac/guest) but I don't have guest accounts on the Mac machines and I can't edit the user information - I can only put in a password and, predicatably, that doesn't work as the account doesn't actually exist.
So right at the moment, I have absolutely no way of accessing any files anywhere on either Mac from either of the Windows machines.
How do I unwind the mess that now exists to at least get back to the limited functionality that is meant to be available?
    All help greatly appreciated!

    Hi Brian!
I belive SharePoints is still the way to go. It's the simplest way to do some complex Windows sharing on your Mac OS X system.
I did have a long "how to" on what I thought you should do and then I remembered my Microsoft best practices for creating Windows shares.
Create your Windows shares with Everyone full control, which means you'll need to select the "Show System Users & Group" option. While you can't make the owner Everyone, you can set it as root and set Group to Everyone and set all permissions to r/w.
Use your Mac OS X's file permissions to set owners and groups and control access.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Help networking a Security System DVR for remote viewing

    Hey,
I am trying to network my Security System DVR for remote viewing but cannot seem to get it working. I have read some post on this site as well as many others and followed instructions to the T but to no avail.
    Here's what I've got:
    Linksys WRT54G2 V1 connected to a modem.
My DVR has 3 settings for networking:
    -PPPOE
    -Static
    -DHCP
On DHCP, The DVR automatically sets these settings:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.100
    Subnet:  255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
and then the DNS is the same as the one on the "status" area of the router settings...
    Port: 10000-10020
I set up port forwarding for 192.168.1.100 for port 10000-10020 selecting "both"
If I pull up the "DHCP Clients Table" it shows the above IP Address but with no name....and the MAC address is something like ee:ee:ee:d4:03:5f.
I have tried to change the DVR to Static and do everything manually but thats not working either.
I created a Dynamic DNS with goddns.org but the DVR seems to have its own one built in that you cannot change. (at the bottom of the network settings it says something like "URL: 123484984.goddns.org----Status:  OK."  But when I try to type that in the address bar of IE it goes no where.)
I hope someone can tell me why its not working.... It was working when we first got everything set up...then it stopped. then I messed with it and got it working but didn't know what I did.  Now its broken again and I don't know what to do.
    -Ian
PS.  When I am connected to the router via LAN cable and I type the internal IP Address assigned to the DVR by the DHCP (192.168.1.100:10000) it brings up the DVR menu perfectly.  But when I try to log into it from a different location...with the external IP address...thats when I have trouble.  I do not think my external IP has changed since I got this router set up.
     Any help would be awesome.

Hmmm... Did that and I can't seem to get it working still. Whats weird is that as long as I am connected to the router...I can access it through the internal IP address.... (if using DHCP its 192.168.1.100:10000 and if using static its 192.168.1.99:10000)
Those both work when set up on DHCP for the first and Static for the second.  But as soon as I type the external IP address with the port it doesn't work.  Its like there is a firewall OR the port forwarding is not working.  But everything on the port forwarding page looks good... Its enabled, set on Both, correct port range... 10000-10020...
    Any Ideas?

  • Help Network Startup delay

    Hi,
About a year ago we upgraded most of our computers from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x. Ever since then there is a 30 to 40 sec delay at startup before the Network initializes. This issue is only present in 10.4.x and it happened the 1st day we upgraded to 10.4.x. It does not happen on either of the two remaining 10.3.9 machines.
Basically, on the 10.3.9 machines the Network is available (I can surf the net and mount Network volumes) as soon as the Desktop finishes loading. On the 10.4.x machines, there is a 30 to 40 second delay between the time the Desktop finishes loading and when the Network is really available to surf or Mount Network Volumes.
I have opened the Network Preference and before our Network is really active (so I can Surf the Net) I have a valid IP Address and the Green Light is lit, indicating that the Compter thinks it has a valid connection, even though it doesn't. This has happened on every version of 10.4.x we have used, all the way up to and including 10.4.9.
We were using a 4 year old Router up to about 3 weeks ago, so I was hoping that upgrading the Router might help this situation, but it didn't. Even our Network with the new Router has the same problem.
Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Kalagan

I am in the process of updating the Firmware on our Cisco Gigabit Switches to see if that will help.
    Just an update

  • Need help networking a photosmart 7960 to a windows 7 64 bit system from an XP Home 32 bit

I'm trying to network an HP photosmart 7960 to a wireless notebook with Win 7 64 bit where the printer is connected via usb to a windows home 32 bit computer. Have downloaded vista 64 bit drivers for the printer but can't install them on the windows 32 bit system. Have installed the drivers on the win 7 system but can't locate the inf file when trying to add a network printer. Any help would be appreciated.

I sympathize with your dilemma.  I have the same situation.  I have a Media Center 2002XP SP3 desktop with 3 printers connected.  Photosmart 7960, PSC 750xi all in one, and a Deskjet 870cse(a vintage 1996).  I just purchased a HP dv7-3188cl notbook WIN7 64bit.  My home network has worked flawlessly for years, with at least 4 wired and 3 wireless computers connected, networking 6 printers.
I have resolved my network problems with the printers.  They are connected to the host machine running MC2002 XP SP3.  I tried to install the printers through the network wizard by adding the  printers through WIN7.  Only the 14 year old printer installed successfully.  The photosmart 7960 and PSC 750xi did NOT.  Windows Update could not find the drivers for the install.  None are available on HP website either.
After some web research, I have solved my problems. At first, I followed the add printer protocol from the WIN7 laptop.  Error messages resulted and the USB printers would not install   error0x00000214.  The USB printers failed to install while connected to the host XP machine.  The 870cse is on LPT1 and it did network successfully when attached to the host  XPcomputer.
The drivers needed for the 7960 and 750xi (and probably many other HP printers) will install if you connect the printer to the WIN7 machine and follow the setup.  Windows update will load the needed drivers if they are available.  I sucessfully installed both printers on the WIN7 notebook, printed a test page on each, and printed other docs from the WIN7 notebook while they were connected to the WIN7 notebook.  These drivers are 64bit.  Both printers worked well when connected via USB to the WIN7 machine.
I then disconnected the printers from the WIN7 notebook and reconnected them to the original host XP desktop.
With the host desktop running, and the notebook running wirelessly, I went to (on WIN7)  START--Devices and Printers.
Click ADD A PRINTER at the top of the window, then click LOCAL PRINTER ( NOT network!!!)
Then in the following Printer port window choose  'CREATE A NEW PORT--SELECT LOCAL PORT amd click next.
In the Port name box, enter the name of the port, ie the path.  For example if the host machine with the printers attached is named WINXPMACHINE (as named on the network), enter \\WINXPMACHINE\    Then add immediately after that the Printer's name as it is on the XP machine( right click the printer in the Printer and Fax folder on the XP machine, select sharing and find the network share name for the printer).  It may look like \\WINXPMACHINE\Printerx where x is a number corresponding to the printer.  Then click next and OK
The next box asks to choose the printer from a list.  Select the printer you want to network( I have only done this with HP printers) and click next
The next dialogue box asks to use the driver currently installed(recommended)--click next -- do NOT replace the driver( it was installed when the printer was directly connected to your WIN7 machine)  Type in the name you want to use to identify the printer on your WIN7 machine.  The printer will install.  Print a test page to confirm installation.
Original web post I discovered ishttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/bd43f9f6-e231-484f-a3b8-e06afeee7...
     Hope it helps.

  • [Help] - Network Production Ordes

Hello dear SAP gurus and friends,
I have the following scenario with network production orders:
    FP
      MP1
      SF
        MP2
    With backflusk in all MPs.
I do the confirmations at FP level and the confirmation for order os the SF are done automaticaly. So, everytime I made a confirmation for FP order in CO11N for 1 KG I have the following movements:
    1 KG 101 FP
    1 KG 101 SF
    1 KG 261 SF
    1 KG 261 MP1
    1 KG 261 MP2
    Untill now everithing goes OK.
The problem is, when I cancel the confirmation! When I do that, I have:
    1 KG 102 FP
    1 KG 262 SF
    1 KG 262 MP1
    1 KG 262 MP2
Is missing 1 KG 102 SF!!!
Can someone help me with this? Is this SAP bug?
    Thanks everyone for your time.
    Best regards,
    Adelmo Silva

What do you mean by "the confirmation for order of the SF are done automaticaly"?
There must be some sort of user exit in use, because this is not standard SAP functionality; and this must also be the reason for your problem: this enhancement was poorly designed in the way that it works only one way, but not with cancellations as well!
Review this with with ABAP expert; trace the program if no documentation is available.

    Mario

  • I need help networking a ibook color series blue se with a mac mini please

Ok i need some help let me explain:
I just purchased a blue clamshell g3 366mhz here are my specs:
    powerpc g3 clamshell 366mhz
    apple airport card
    40 gig hard drive
    512 megs of ram
running mac os x tiger 10.4.10 (by the way no issues running mac os x tiger if you upgrade ram and hard drive)
I also own a intel mac mini here are it's system specs
    intel mac mini 1.6 ghz
    1.5 gig's ram
    250 gig hard drive
running mac os x tiger 10.4.10
So here is what i would like to do
    I own apple's ilife 08 and 06 and i purchased a 05 installation disk from amazon.
I use the ibook as photograghy storage while i am out shooting nature shoots and wedding's
I have installed in this order.
    adobe photoshop cs
    adobe illustrator cs
    adobe indesign cs
iphoto 06 (yes it does work on g3 computers
i movie 05 (yes it works as well)
but i really need to be able to network the two machines to each other so i can transfer photo's from one machine to another. How do i do this????
Is there a way to do this with the airport cards????
Do i need to purchase software from apple???
    If so what???

You can use Ethernet or AirPort or even Firewire.
The fastest way to transfer photos is to boot the iBook into Firewire Target Disk mode. The iBook will then act as an external FireWire drive. You can then drag files from the iBook to the Mac mini.
For other options, you can find details on making a network for file sharing in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.

  • Help mail nightmare since upgrading to tiger!!!!!

Since I upgraded to tiger I have had nothing but trouble with mail. When I open mail there is no message viewer, I have to create a new one everytime and it is always blank - there are folders but no messages. When i try to get new mail it looks but gets nothing - it is online and I've used connection doctor to check. When i use activity viewer it says it is checking with the server but still nothing appears. The only way I can check my emails is to directly access my .mac account where all my mail is found but for some reason it won't download with mail. Also when I try to quit mail it won't and I have to force quit! Please help, I'm really stuck and its a nightmare!
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
    0. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/, and open Mail by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Help, network problems

    Hi,
Im new to these forums and i do require your help. my imac 20" intel with isight, has en-counted a problem showing the network as being the weakest that it can be, it was fine on thursday night, came back from a trip on sunday and found out that this problem had accured, im on virgin media with a 10mb/s connection with a belkin54g router connected to the imac wirelessly, i have other computers in the house hold including a macbook and a windows machine, both get full signal from the router, its also works flawlessly with my ipod touch just my imac is not responding at all
    HELP!!!
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

OK, I am not a pc guy at all, but wireless security on a network is only as good as the computer that has the oldest security capabilities. There is probably a better way to say that but I will explain:
Let's assume that WEP is the oldest and WPA is the newest type of security. If your pc can only handle WEP and your mac can handle WEP and WPA, if you want all of them "wirelessly protected" you have to use WEP and give up the more secure WPA .
To start with security I would enable the wireless and put both MACS on WPA with TKIP and choose a simple password just to check it out (you can change it later) Also choose mixed as a wireless network mode (this will deal with both wireless g and b) and see if the macs work wirelessly with the added wireless security

  • Please help, networking at work! Teaching tomorrow!

Hi, just returned to my work at school and I am having a problem connecting to the network at school as I'm a teacher. I just bought a MacBook Pro after 'donating' my ibook G4 to my wife . However, I cannot seem to access the schools network which I use to before on my ibook G4. I did, on the G4, use DAVE to connect and that worked fine. However, I have read and heard that in Leopard and with the MacBook Pro you don't need anything to connect to a PC network. So, after reading this I looked in the finder and, sure enough, I see the "shared" tab with "all". So when I click on "all" I SEE the network I can connect to. HOWEVER, when I double click on the file server I want it says "connection failed". I've even tried to use the DAVE 7.0 to connect (trial version) but that seems to have same issues as well. It mounts the file server but when I click on it it says "connection failed" as well. I tried to go into finder and to "Go" and then "connect to server" but what do I put in this field? whatever I type in this field, it adds an "afp:\\" in front of it and says "connection failed". I even went into Terminal and pinged the network and it does that fine..so I'm perplexed..is there something I am not doing? Please help as it's first day of classes tomorrow and I really need to marry up with the network here! Thanks for any help ahead of time!

    Hi there ...
Did you check or post in the "Getting online and networking" forum? It's one category back in Mac OS x v10.5 Leopard at the top of the screen ...
Just in case no one here can help ....

I'm using both itunes for Mac and iTunes for windows, I have a network drive that I have all of my music on. iTunes for windows reconizes the networks drive and all of the music. on iTunes for mac if you go to iTunes, prferences, advance you will find the folder on which all of the music is being stored. Have you tried that?
Further more I have not being able to link my iTunes for Mac to my network drive. when I tried it I had to first look for the network drive, connect to it and then from iTunes look for a folder to add to library. when I did that, itunes tried it to copy all of the music to the computer's hard drive, which I do not want. Do you know how to map a netwrok drive on to a mac computer?
