Hi, see if this can be done...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • BLACK SCREEN on start up with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-power

Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any
cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears,
and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After
about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling,
    so I'm putting 2 together.
           Errors:
I got a Blue Screen of Death the first time I started it up with the overheating ritual, but I never got it since. It was 0X7B.
I got another Blue Screen of Death about a week ago, but came as it was on already and I had been using it, and said something about disabling Cache or Shadowing in BIOS. I never got it since.
           Event Viewer events found:
    1. Kernel-Power, Summary page.
There are critical events for a few things like Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63). There are 19 of them, each day 1 or 2 of them but mostly 1, so this maybe corresponds to my daily ritual.
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    2. Kernel-Processor-Power - Event ID 37, task category (7)
"The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report."
    3. LMS - HCMI - Event ID 2, Task Category: none
"LMS Service cannot connect to HECI driver".
I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the
driver wasnt for the system, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on.
MSCONFIG.exe, Boot Advanced Options: I have tried twice to change this 1 setting, check box "Number of processors" and change to 2 processors, because I do have 2 processors. I have been able to change
this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?

You are very wrong about that mystified. What do YOU think made my computer work without beeping at all hu? (I bet you're gonna tell me). I figured it out.

Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.

Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
    Good luck!

  • NB 305 black screen on start up

My NB305N410BL displays a black screen on start up. It had worked fine the prior night. You can hear the "beeps" for the start page but no mouse or image ever. Any ideas on the problem? Thanks, Karen

Try this, disconnect the battery and charger. Hold the power button for 15 seconds and reconnect everything and turn on the computer...hopefully this helps you fix the issue...

presario f700 black screen at start up, if left  to own it flashes hard drive light once fan starts then turns off the starts again can get it to stop this sequence by pressing certain keys but screen always stays black and remote screen does not turn on. Have tried removing memory, hard reset, removed ram, have tested hard drive out of device. Anything else I can try.
Book says 15secs for a hard reset, one post said 30secs, which is correct

Hi, 30 secs is the better of the two options there. I am assuming the Hard drive tested fine? You can try turning the computer on with out the hard drive in it and see if you atleast get some text saying not bootable device or if you are able to boot into BIOS. If this does not happen you can switch out the ram chips. (boot with one chip then take it out and boot with the other) see if these work. If these steps fail its more than likly more of a hardware issue with the systemboard.
While I may work for HP, my posts and replies are my own and should not be mistaken for statments made by HP as a whole.

My Mac Pro is acting up.
If I do a reset after its beenruning for a period of time I get a black screen at start up.  I have tried multiple different monitor cables and nothing seems to work.  It does seem to resart and I can here the start up chime but no display.  If I unplug the machine and let cool for 1/2 ~ 1 hour it then turns back on with no problem.

    Any ideas?  Bad graphics card?

AC if you used it this once would pay for itself. Same for a good solid UPS - a good one can stop that 1/100,000 surge that takes out a modem (if you filter of course).
I've known people that never knew you could filter coax cable or dsl and we get enough severe storms it has been, not if it happens, but when.
Unlike the X1900 which had a air chamber and would cause clogging you really should not need to and be pulling it out to clean dust all that much if at all.
People have gone through 2 or 3 ATI 5770s and some 5870s due to what are probably design or bad batches especially the first months run.

@tjk Thanks! My mother-in-law (also named Barbara, ironically) started having this issue this morning, so I've been looking into this. It seems to be a fairly widespread problem which makes me think that Lion (10.7.x) has exacerbated some issue with the card that may have already been in place. from everything I've seen, its a display-only issue (no data corruption, unless you force reboot). Still very frustrating for folks though.
Actually, thank you! I'd probably still be beating my head against the wall. That did ring a bell with another link I had stored: http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbo ok-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars
Don't know if it's related or not (and don't have the inclination to read all of them right now), but there it is. Will stay tuned for any new info. Again, good work and thanks!

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • Please Help: Black screen on Start up.

We lost our power due to a storm yesterday. My week old intel iMac was asleep when the power was cut and when I re-booted, all I got was the start up sound and then a black screen.
The light in the mouse is visible and when the spacebar is pressed I hear the error sound.
I have re-set the pram several times as well as left it un-plugged for and an hour. No change.
    Any ideas?

Insert your installation disk, restart your Mac while holding the 'C' key down. It will take a little longer, but once booted up, choose File>Utilities>Disk Utility and Repair the Disk. Then restart as normal and see if that helps. You may need something more robust from a 3rd party, like DiskWarrior (which I think should be owned by all Mac users personally), to perform a proper repair. But anyway, try this and post back.

  • Black screen on start up!!! Please help!

I have been having baffling problems with my imac (2006) and am desperately seeking advice.
Basically, it has become really unreliable lately... Sometimes it starts up and runs fine- with no obvious problems but once it goes to sleep or is shut down it more often than not will not start up properly again.
The start-up chime sounds, you can hear the fans as usual and the light at the front goes on and is steady BUT it only has a black screen. I imagine that the computer is responsive but it only has a black screen. I have tried everybody's suggestions from other similar posts but it is still really unreliable- which is even more of an annoyance because I was hoping to sell it soon and really don't have the money for expensive repairs.
Has anyone had this same problem and found a good solution????
I look forward to your responses.
    Lizzy

    Hi lizzyblue
Operationally a steady LED light on the front means that the computer is on and the Display is sleeping.
    First, reset the iMac's SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
    +2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
Then if it is still acting up or occasionally starting up black, try the following:
    1. Going to: System Preferences > Energy Saver > and click the Restore Defaults button.
    2. and if you are using Hot Corners/Active Screen Corners to sleep the display, go to: System Preferences Exposé & Spaces > Exposé and deselect any corners that are set to "Put Display to Sleep" just incase your mouse is running to a corner at startup.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.
