Help! Problem downgrading from ARD Admin 3.0 to 2.2; LAN clients still 2.2.

Hi gang! This is my first post here. I work as a technician in a university computer lab with 250 machines. About 10% of these are Macs, and we manage them with Mike Bombich's NetRestore, Faronics Deep Freeze, and Apple Remote Desktop. All clients are running ARD 2.2.
I installed ARD Admin 3.0 on our office eMac to see some of the new features. Sadly, most of them will not work until you upgrade the clients to 3.0. I aso dislike how a majority of older commands from 2.2 (like UNIX commands, Lock screen, etc), are suddenly not working in 3.0. How convenient! Just upgrade your client software and presto! Not happening, yet.
So I went to uninstall the ARD Admin from my machine. Here is what I did to roll back: I have deleted anything to do with Apple Remote Desktop from the following folders:
/Applications/
/Library/Application support/Apple/
/Library/Preferences/
/Library/Receipts/
~/Library/Application Support/
~/Library/Preferences/
I reinstalled the software (it said "Install" not Upgrade) and launched the freshly installed ARD 2.2 Admin. It prompted me for my serial number and then I sat waiting for over 30 seconds for the main screen to appear. Finally it spat an error message at me, then crashed: "The Remote Desktop Administrator failed to start due to an unexpected error."
I can't find this in the KBase, or perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it?
eMac 800Mhz, TiBook 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   In lab: 4 x Intel iMacs, 24 x Quicksilver G4s

Remove ARD again, using the instructions here.
Then reinstall your 2.2 ARD administrator. If you have an earlier version of ARD 2 on your installation disk, make sure you update it to 2.2, either through Software Update or via the downloadable updater, before you try and launch the administration application for the first time.
Hope this helps.
Just FYI, if you try to use a 3.0 admin app with 2.2 clients, or a 2.2 admin with 3.0 clients, all that works is the VNC functions which means that other than the ability to upgrade the clients to 3.0 (where applicable), you only get Observe and Control.

  • I can't upgrade clients from ARD admin

    Hi all,
I am trying to upgrade all my client machines to ARD 3.3.2. But when I try doing this from ARD admin, it comes back failing with no error message returned. What could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance...

Have you tried restarting the workstations and then trying the update? That's often cured the problem for me when an update fails.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error in accessing ARD client 2.2.1 from ARD admin 3.2 via Airport

    Hi all,
I was successfullly accessing mac-mini machine having ARD client 2.2.1 which was connected to ethernet cable from ARD admin 3.2. But now when I am trying to access same mac-mini machine which is now connected to airport, I am getting following error:
Machine is having old ARD client/agent.
Even though, ARD 3.2 supports ARD 2.2.1, why am I getting this error? How to resolve this error?
    Thanks,
    Palav

Because Chicken of the VNC doesn't use the full ARD client, only the VNC portion. The error you reported:
Machine is having old ARD client/agent.
is exactly what I'd expect when accessing a 2.2 client from ARD 3.2. You will need to update the client version to 3.2, and that will require that the ports in the Airport base station be open and forwarded so that the ARD administration application can get full access to perform the client upgrade.

  • Need help to downgrade from my 20GB yearly storage plan to a free 5GB cloud plan

I have tried everything possible to downgrade from a paid version to a free one. But as the screen shots show, it let me select the free version but I can't save this option as the "Done" button is greyed off. If I select another paid plan like 20GB, the "Done" button is blue and active.
Anyone an idea how to execute the downgrade ?

For the sake of other users with this problem (although I didn't have a yearly plan - it just seemed to be a rolling monthly payment) I'd like to confirm that it took a call to the support line to resolve this. The online support information simply tells you how to downgrade assuming that the done button is available to complete the downgrade so it's not at all helpful in resolving the issue for those experiencing the problem. The support agent resolved this at their end and I had to log out and in again to check that this had resulted in the required downgrade. The online support doesn't recognised the greyed out button as a common problem but I suspect it it. Also when I searched this forum for the problem 'icloud downgrade problems' it said there were no existing articles. This really makes it difficult for people to find the resoluton to their problem. My resolution was to get the support line to contact me. Hope this helps other users with the same problem.

    Dear all,
I'm experiencing some problems while trying to downgrade this HP Sleekbook 14 b051TU machine from 32 bit to 64bit. It keeps showing me error message off unable to load the driver for the storage device.
    What I've done:
    1. I have downloaded the necessary drivers from hp website for Win7-64bit
    2. I have turned off Secure Boot
    3. I have enabled Legacy Support
I am able to browse the driver and load it but even after loading the driver, it still says that there's missing driver and I cannot see any disk that I can install on.
Your help is very much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

  • XServe from ARD Admin shows a blue screen

Our G5 Xserve is administered from a Macbook via ARD, as are 130+ other machines. They are all fine except for the xServe. When I try to Control or Observe, I see a plain blue screen with a row of icons along the top edge. These represent: Share mouse and screen with user, Capture screen to a file etc.
All the services the Xserve provides are running, and I can use Workgroup Manager and Server Admin no problem. I can't however look at logs or Retrospect operations etc.
There are references to blue screen and Locking the workstation screen in earlier posts, but these don't appear relevant.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions please.

  • Are you having problems downgrading from 5.1 crapware (1602.error in Itunes)?

    Hi!
Like many ppl, I´m experiencing major problems with the last (and less successful) upgrade to ATV(2). Tried downgrading but keep getting 1602-error in Itunes.
    Found this useful youtube-clip, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7UCAH_Fczc
In short terms, helps you putting the ATV in DFU-mode and overrides the 1602-error.
Helped me and is now up running as before, with 5.02-firmware. And everything works like a charm. Apple is still signing earlier firmware due to fu*kup with the last one.

too bad i expect that when i pay $300 + dollars for something that i assume it will work correctly... without me having to go through so much trouble to fix a problem that shouldnt exist to begin with.

  • Big Problem Downgrading From Leaopard!

    Greetings,
I was having big problems with iPhoto 6.06 in 10.5.1 and so decided to Archive and Install back to Tiger. After the installer finished I was asked to create a new user instead of seeing my usual log-in screen with all the users listed. After getting to the desktop I discovered that the installer had placed all the user accounts into the Previous System folder and not transfered any of the data to the new Users folder, including many apps.
What is the best way to get these now de-commisioned user accounts active again with all their settings intact?
    Thanks all!

Ok, you might be able to set you computer in target mode, and use Migration Assistant to get it back. If you make a complete backup, you could mess around a bit. Maybe even drag and drop would work.
Saying that, you have made so many mistakes that I want to point a couple out. Why go backward (always dangerous)? Why not A&I Leopard, rather than Tiger? Why did you do any of this without a backup?

  • Hostname entry in ARD Admin 2.2

Can someone tell me where, on the client system, does ARD admin get the hostname value for the client? Not all the entries in ARD admin show hostname values. Or, why wouldn't all my OS X client systems be providing a hostname value to ARD admin?
    Thank you
    Greg

It gets the hostname from the "Sharing" section of "System Preferences" on the Client machine.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    4 MB
      Memory:
    2 GB
      Bus Speed:
    800 MHz

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • Help on small issues after WinXP downgrade from Vista

    Lenovo 3000 v200
I recently downgraded from Vista to WinXP Professional, and I must say I'm much happier with XP.
Some issues on the install: although I downloaded all drivers from the Lenovo site, the install didn't work from my usb floppy drive.
It recognized the floppy on the F6 portion of the install, but then later it kept asking for the disk to be inserted (it was already in the drive).  Workaround was to install by changing to "compatibility mode" in the BIOS, and after install, loading all drivers and changing BIOS back to SATA.
All features of the laptop appear to work perfectly; camera, fingerprint reader, wifi, etc.
HOWEVER: in the device manager, there are 3 yellow exclamation points in the "Other Devices" section, and each of them is labeled "Base System Device."   Does anyone know what these are?  Why are they not recognized as specific devices?  LenovoCare doesn't recognize them either, and I have no idea what drivers to attempt to install for mystery devices.
Also, "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" won't install.  I have the current driver, and I've tried updating from LenovoCare, but no luck.  As I don't use a modem, this seems irrelevant, but I'd like to install it just the same if possible.
Finally, the LenovoCare recognized a need to install a "Hotkey" update, and it claims to successfully install, but everytime I run LenovoCare it says I need it again.  Any comments or observations?
Again, the computer works just fine even with these small issues.  In fact, it is better than fine; it is a joy to use and a real speed demon with XP instead of Vista.  So I'm not trying to do any rocket science or potentially screw up a very nice situation, but I am trying to iron out these small nuisances.
Thanks to all of you who consider my trivial problems.  I really appreciate having knowledgable individuals like yourselves help out a very modestly skilled, but reasonably ambitious user.
    Cheers,
    Fred

    Hello Fred,
I created a blog on this forum called.... "I Explain How To Downgrade From Vista To XP Successfully On A 3000 N100 Laptop" Locate this message and read through it. Try the "Auto Detect This System" I Talk about. It will load the latest drivers and the latest...BIOS..... for your particular model if you have not already upgraded it. You did not mention if you had upgraded your BIOS...... if your running an  "OLD" version.... THIS..... could be your problem.

  • Downgrade App store bought version of ARD admin?

I bought ARD admin 3.5.3 via the App Store a while back to control computers at work from home on my Macbook Pro 17 inch late 20122 occasionally and it worked great.
Following the 3.6.1 upgrade, all attempts to connect to any computer at work crash the Netgear incoming broadband router. This is with the ports mapped to various single macs to control, mostly running Snow Leopard.
I wanted to downgrade to 3.5.3 and followed the tip here exactly
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20292728#20292728
But since this is from a support/download version of the Admin tool, it asks for the serial again, which I never received as it was an App store purchase.
I can only now re-install 3.6.1 from the App Store.
Does anyone know a way of getting the older version from the App Store? Maybe I'm missing a very obvious trick here (like a "Legacy versions" button?).
    Many thanks in advance
    James

I have a similar issue - I have 3 copies of ARD 3.6.1 running perfectly on Lion systems - but also one "old" PPC Tiger system which detect as running ARD 2.2 (though I never actually installed 2.2 I assume it built into Tiger). I think ARD 3.4 is compatible with Tiger but wonder if anyone has got thise to work somehow as I also don't have relevant serial numbers.
Fortunatly remote access does work to the Tiger system but some of the other function don't work (e.g. remote package install).

  • Help needed from ARD expert : Client  Status always VNC  ON

    Hello,
Lorna has posted the following problem which I have also encountered and I could not solve it by re-installing ARD and upgrading to version 2.2:
I administer a small office network (all 10.3.9) and I am running ARD 2.2 Admin on a G4 Powerbook, controlling a number of other laptops and some desktop machines on a mixed airport/wired ethernet network.
On one G4 desktop I just re-installed OS 10.3.9 using the Apple Sotware Updater and since then I get the "VNC ON" status on that Mac. The other Macs work fine. I have deleted this machine from the ARD Master List, and I tre-defined it,but all in vain. It always shows a VNC server status.
Obviously, the ARD admin does not "see" that the ARD client is active and I can only connect via VNC.
Does anybody know what could be the cause of this problem ?
    Thank you so much

    Hello,
I could locate the culprit in the meantime:
I had a hunch that Netbarrier X, which is installed on my Powerbook could be causing the problem. Although I believed I had switched Netbarrier off ("No restrictions") for troubeshooting purposes the host entries in the so-called "stop list" remain active. And there I had one single entry : 127.0.0.1. Deleting my "own" host resolved the problem. I don't understand why the other wireless Macs still worked but I am not a network specialist.
Netbarrier's illogical behaviour has caused me other troubles in the past (such as not being able to print because the cupsd app was in a stop-list!)
I think that I shall now get rid of it, it's doing more harm than good.
    Thanks for responding.
