HELP! Question about "Locking" ipod

I am an elementary teacher that is trying to get ipods integrated into the school curriculum, school administrators have expressed concerns about students putting inappropriate content onto the ipods, is it possible to "lock" unauthorized editing on an ipod, possibly password protection, or only allowing it to be updated on one cpu?

No, it's not possible to do what you want.
There is a screen lock that locks the iPod so another user can't use it without a code being entered, but this would lock the whole iPod.
There's no way to selectively lock specific content, either adding it or viewing it.

  • Questions about the ipod camera connector...

    Hi,
i got some questions about the ipod camera connector.
1)Is the camera connector compatible with the Sony camera DSC-P93A ?
In fact, this camera got PTP protocol.
    PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) Oui
Marque PIM (Print Image Matching) Oui
    PictBridge™ Oui
So, do the camera need to have the three following protocols to be compatible with the camera connector ?
=>Mass Storage, PTP, and Type 4
Or maybe does it need only one of it??
    2) Is it compatible with a USB memory card reader?
    Thank you

Wel, if i've right understood what you said, my camera is compatible because it got PTP protocol ?
That's weird, cause i wrote a mail to sony to ask them about the compatibility of my camera, but they answered that it wasn't. But of course, i'll prefer to believe you than them !

  • Question about the "iPod radio remote"

I assume the "radio remote" is the same for every country and is under software control. I want to buy in Canada but use in UK and Canada.
Has anyone got one and seen the RDS work, in the UK almost every FM channel is RDS. Do they have RDS in Canada (Toronto) can anyone confirm?
And of course it says FM so this again I assume no AM, not that I need AM it was just an interest in if it could do it.
What happens about headphones, you can plug a pair into the remote, can you still plug into the bottom of the iPod or does the remote connector get in the way.
What is the story with "line out" I use this all the time as I amp my headphones. So I assume you cant use line out? or is the remote a line out also.
And I assume the remote cable and you headphones act as the aerial, how is the quality? Is it any good indoors, some little FM radios I have used drop to mono indoors. Does this Apple one frop to mono if the signal is weak?
Someone that has one can perhaps answer
    Cheers
    Ray

I can at least answer some of the questions.
The RDS function on this radio/remote is poor in the
UK. You have to set the radio function on the iPod
to "Europe" and when you do this RDS info is not
displayed on almost all radio stations such as
Virgin, XFM, Capital, GLR, etc. It does display on
Radio 2 however. At least, this is my finding. So
it's unpredictable at best. Setting the radio to
"USA" on the iPod increases the likelihood of getting
the RDS to display, but the downside is that you can
then only tune the radio in increments of 2mhz which
is a bit awkward if your looking for 89.1mhz!
There are three settings for the radio which you
choose via the iPod. They are USA/Europe/Japan. No
setting for Canada, although I'm sure you will still
be able to use it over there as I can still use mine
here in the UK even if it's set to USA.
No, there is no AM radio.
You can plug headphones into the remote or the
headphone jack on the iPod, or both at the same time.
I'm not sure I understand your question about the
bottom of the iPod. The radio plugs into the iPod
    via the dock connector.
There is no 'line out' on the iPod. If you mean the
one on the dock, then no you can't use it as you
cannot place the iPod into the dock whilst the
radio/remote is connected as they use the same
    connector.
Yes the cable of the remote acts as the aerial.
Reception is surprisingly good where I am, but it
will of course depend on where you use it. I've
used it indoors without any drop in signal or it
    dropping to mono.
Lastly, you need to update the software for both the
nano or the 5th generation for the radio to work
(after you do this a radio function appears in the
menu), and some users have found that doing this
screws up the iPod. I have mine working on both the
nano and the 5th gen without any problems.
There is a review of the radio/remote here. I like
mine and consider it a worthwhile accessory, but of
course there will be those who disagree.
    iPod
    Radio/Remote Review.
    Thank you for the reply.
Think your right USA or Europe will work in Canada.
Yes I mean the line out via the dock, I just wondered if the remote become a line out socket (I also use a pocket dock for line out for headphone amp as I use a pair of Sennheiser HD600 with my ipod) but of course that is silly becasue you have a volume control on the remote and line out is normaly fixed.
Based on your views I shall get one in March when in Toronto

  • Question about lost iPod - Please help me out!!

My iPod was stolen and is there anyway to relocate it if it connect to someone's computer? Could Apple track it down? And I am not sure whether I have registered my iPod online. Is there anyway to check??

Apple have no process in place to either report or track stolen iPods. All you can do is report the theft to the Police together with it's serial number, and if your iPod was registered with Apple when you first got it, they will assist the Police in returning it to you should it ever be recovered.

  • Question about multiple ipods on one computer

    Hello!
Let me explain this in detail for you:
    The Do Not Disconnect screen
It is normal for your iPod to say this message to you when you connect it to your computer.
When you need to disconnect it from your computer, you'll first need to eject it.
There are a few ways to eject your iPod; through iTunes, the Safely Remove Hardware program, and "My Computer".
    Through iTunes
Ejecting your iPod via iTunes depends on what setting your iPod is on for.
Connect your iPod. Go into Edit> preferences> iPod. See what setting your iPod is on; "automatic" or "manual".
    Automatic
If you aren't restoring, or updating your iPod, iTunes should automatically eject your iPod from iTunes. If it doesn't, then right-click the name of your iPod in iTunes, and make sure that the "enable for disk use" is un-checked.
    Manual
If you need to eject your iPod from iTunes if the setting is "manual", click the little arrow that's next to the name of your iPod in the left source list in iTunes.
Through the "Safely Remove Hardware" program
Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen, and there's the system tray icons there. If the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is there, click on it, select your iPod, and click "stop".
    Through "My Computer"
    Go to "My Computer".
Find your iPod's listing there (it's typically "E:" or "F:").
    Right-click it, click on "eject".
For additional information about ejecting your iPod, check this Apple Support articles about it.
    Safely disconnecting your iPod
About the "Do Not Disconnect" and "OK to Disconnect" screens on iPod
Any more questions? I'll be glad to try to help you again.

  • A string of question about Locking & Isolation Level

    Hi All
It is highly appreciated if someone give offer answers to my below questions
    1) There are two ways of locking mechanism: Pessimistic & Optimistic. In general, do all J2EE app server support all these two ways of locking ?
    2) It seems to me that setting the isolation level to "serialization" should result in using pessmistic locking. If no so, please point out my misconcept and explain to me.
    3) Are there any differences in the way of entity bean programming as different locking mechansim is adopted ?
    4) With regard to optimistic locking, will the app server throw out exception as data contention is detected ? Is the way of handling dependent on app server? Or It is transparent to the developer of entity bean. Please give me an e.g of j2ee app server product how to handle this scenario.
    5) To adopt the approach of "optimistic" locking, do l have to implement it on my own using bean managed entity bean.
    6) It seems to me that optimistic locking can achieve better concurrency. If it is inherently supported by app server for its container managed entity bean (=> totally transparent to the developer of entity bean). Is it always the rule of thumb to config the server to use "optimistic" locking instead of "pessimistic" ?
Sorry for bombarding you guys with such long list of questions. l would be very thankful if someone can help me consolidate my concept on these topics.
Also, please send your reply to [email protected] as well
    thanks & regards
    Danny

    Hi Danny,
I became interested about the optimistic locking recently. If the topic is not long forgotten then this may make some difference!
We have attacked the optimistic locking issue by introducing audit fields (MODIFY_BY_USER, MODIFY_DATE) in tables where concurrency needs to be implemented.
We are retrieving rows from the table (for display or update) through Stateless Session Bean using simple SQL SELECT. The audit fields are fetched along with the business data and are kept at the client. While any of the concurrent users tries to update the row the audit fields are sent to the application server along with the modified business data. The relevant Entity Bean checks for any difference in the timestamp of the audit field (MODIFY_DATE) value with the value in the database. If a mismatch is found it reports a business exception to the user. Otherwise, the row is updated with the lastest timestamp value in the audit field MODIFY_DATE.
This works fine when two update operations are not concurrent, i.e., two users submit their update requests in a time lag greater than the time taken by the transaction to complete. This alone could not prevent the dirty update on the database.
Hence, to prevent any concurrent update contending for the same row you need to set the following ejbgen tag in the Entity Bean:
concurrency-strategy = Exclusive<<<<<Note: We are using Weblogic 6.1 with SP4 and CMP (no BMP).
Please let me know if you have got a better solution to tackle this issue.
    Chandra.

  • 3 Questions about the iPod.

If my work gave me a 30gb iPod video, does it have the one year warranty? and will it work if I purchase the Apple Protection plan for it (2 years)? If it worked, do I send it report for service and send it directly to Apple (after they send the package to put it in)?
Also, when I am listening to some songs, when it is aobut 3/4 done, it skips to the very end then freezes, then waits about a minute then plays the next song, and it will happen over and over. - It does this on the same songs over and over.
Also, some of my songs on iTunes are in the correct order (track number, album number, etc.), and they are out of order on my iPod. How can I fix this error?
My main question is the first one, but since I was asking questions, I went ahead and asked the other two questions also.
    Thanks for your help!

A Fifth Generation iPod refers to the 30GB, 60GB or 80GB iPod with video.
    1. If your current MP3s were not purchased from some other online store and are not copy protected they'll work with your iPod
    2. Around 2000 depending on song length and file format. The advertised song capacity of iPod is based on 4 minute songs encoded in AAC (MP4)format at a bit rate of 128 kbps. Longer songs and songs encoded at a higher bitrate or in uncompressed formats take up more space. You'll get a similar number if you MP3 are that bit rate or lower, the figures are pretty approximate.
    3. You won't be able to use Firewire to update, only to charge. USB 1.1 will be signigicantly slower that USB 2 but if you can live with that should work ok.

  • General Questions about the iPod Touch

    Hello,
I'm considering buying a new iPod touch after the Keynote Yesterday. I have a few questions though that I'm on the fence about:
    1. Does the iPod Touch Mail Client Sync with the OSX Mail Client. Does it sync in Tiger? Does it sync in Leopard? Or does it only sync via .Mac
    2. Does the Calendar Program allow you to create new events on the calendar like an iPhone, or can you only view existing events like on the iPod. What about the Address Book?
    3. When the Wifi is not connected can you view your email messages?
    4. When the SDK kit is released in February, will I be able to purchase developer's apps for the iPod Touch, or will they be exclusive to the iPhone?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    1. The mail client works with POP or IMAP, it does not "sync" with the OSX Mail app that I am aware of however if you are using OSX Mail to access a POP or IMAP account they can be configured to work together.
    2. You can add events to the calendar as well as contacts to the address book directly
    3. You can view emails w/o WiFi if you have configured Mail to do so
    4. I don't have an official answer for this one, but I would assume the answer is yes.
Hope that helps, all of this information is avaliable on the iPod Touch product pages.

  • Question about iPhone/iPod and playing songs

    Hi all,
This is my first question here, so please be patient with me if I'm rambling, or this is posted in the wrong forum.
I've recently downloaded a language learning course and want to put it on my iPhone so I can learn Italian as I'm on the bus. While it's great having this course at my fingertips, I want to keep these particular audio files from playing when I'm listening to music on the iPod.
So my question(s) is this..is it possible to somehow ADD files to the iPhone (iPod) while excluding them from the general iPod playlist? I don't want to have to skip over these files each time I'm listening to music, but I still want to keep the files on the iPhone(iPod). If it is possible, how would I go about it?
    Thanks for all help!
    Cheers!
    PBEnglish

There's a work around by using playlists in computer's iTunes.
In iTunes, create one playlist with all the songs you want on the iPhone.
Create another with your language courses.
Sync with the selected playlists in iTunes when connected to the iPhone.
(With iPhone connected and selected in iTunes, in Music tab select Sync Music, Selected playlists, artists, ... and checked the two playlists mentioned above.  Click Sync button.)
Now on iPhone you can choose music or language course playlist without interferences.

  • Hi, my name's Michael and I had a question about my iPod touch. I recently dropped it but I still have a warranty and Apple Support said they couldn't fix that my screen doesn't recognize my finger is on there trying to do anything?

Hi, my iPod touch was recently dropped but afterwards I called Apple Support and they told me I have a 17 day warranty for my Apple iPod Touch, so then I asked them if I could send it in to get fixed but what had happened to my iPod was that when I click the home button and try to ''Slide to Unlock" it doesn't recognize that I'm trying to do anything else the only thing that I can do is press the "Sleep" and "Home" Buttons and nothing else. Anything you can do to help me please??

Even if you were still under AppleCare warranty, it would not cover damage from a fall.
That "17 day" warranty makes no sense, though. iPods have a 1-year free AppleCare warranty for service, and 90 days for free phone support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/products/ipod.html
Apple can repair just about anything that might be wrong with your iPod, but it will cost you. Call, explain the problem, ask for a repair appointment at your nearest Apple Store (or get a case number and ask for instructions to mail it in for a repair), but get a firm quote on the repair cost before authorizing the repair (or mailing it in for repair).

  • Question about my ipod and iTunes

I am stuck! Every time I connect my ipod into iTunes and try to update and then when it says updating ipod, do not disconnect, suddenly a pop up appears and says that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
    What do I do????????
    Some please help me!!!!!!!!!!

I think you should try what was already suggested. There are programs other than iTunes that can manage your iPod music anyway, so if we're unable to successfully debug your iTunes problem you won't be completely stuck without music on your iPod. But I suspect mods wouldn't like it if I told you about the other software so you'll have to Google around for it yourself, as a last resort of course.
P.S. Katrina in your computer specs do you mean 3GHz instead of 300GHz maybe? Or 3000MHz or 300MHz? =)

  • Help me about the ipod battery

Did the battery test as apple said to, but i only got about 8 hours out of it and ive only had it for about 1/2 months! Is this normal? Or is my ipod faulty in some way?
    Paul

I managed to squeeze 14 and a half hours out the the black 4G that I had by doing the following.
Draining it and then FULLY charging it (left it plugged in a good while after the battery indicator said it was full).
    Turned EQ off.
    Turned Sound Check off.
    Turned Shuffle off.
    Set backlight timeout to minimum.
Populated it with files smaller than around 9 meg.
Set volume to around 40% (which was realistic for me in general use).
Locked it and left the buttons alone.
Left it overnight and it was still playing until afternoon the next day.
Also, in my experience new batteries (in any device) often don't reach their full potential until they have had a few charging cycles under their belt I only got about 6 hours after the first charge, then it got much better after a few drain/charge cycles.
Let us know how you get on.
