HELP! serious problem receiving mail in iMac account

Here's is what seems to be happening:
I received my mail and the progress window showed it flowing in. I can spot the important items before they appear in the inbox by the title. Today there was a very important email from my daughter and it seemed to be downloading just fine.
However, when I went to look for it, it was nowhere to be found! I searched everywhere. I searched in the search field by using words that I remembered in the Subject line. I search by using the "From" typing my daughter's name. Nothing! It had completely evaporated.
I tried to download it again in my imac account and there was no mail to be downloaded.
What do I do to retrieve an important email that the Mail.app seems to have trashed without my permission?
The scary thing is that Mail may have been doing this on a regular basis while my attention diverted to something else.
BTW, I did rebuild my inbox, but the wanted mail would not appear.
Griff

Yes, I mean Activity viewer, my bad!
And my account is a POP account.
And yes I have searched all available mailboxes and in my search have included "All Mailboxes." I also did Google Desktop and Spotlight searches just in case it might reside in a folder deep in the Library file system. It just doesn't exist!
I could see this email being downloaded and waited for it to appear in the inbox but when Mail.app had finished it didn't appear.
To update, this a.m. I thought I would give Entourage a try and it found the missing message in my .mac account, downloaded it and I was able to get it successfully.
I for one am giving up on Mail.app since I can't afford to have this happen again. I will go back to Entourage until Apple fixes the problem. If you search through the Apple Discussions in Mail & Address Book you will find a surprising number of people reporting their Mail mysteriously disappearing from their inboxes - especially lately. I for one am going to abandon Mail.app and go back to Entourage which seems much more reliable; slow, ponderous, bloated, but reliable.

  • Cannot receive mail from .Mac account on port 143

I use my laptop at work. I used to have a 12" Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4.3. I had no problem receiving mail from my .Mac account. Now, and all of a sudden, I can no longer receive my .Mac mail using the Mail app. The error I get is:
The server "mail.mac.com" refused to allow a connection on port 143.
I called AppleCare about this issue last night and they told me to perform the following steps:
    1. Choose .Mac in System Preferences and delete my username and password from the Account tab.
    2. Move com.apple.mail.plist and the Mail folder from my ~/Library folder to the desktop.
    3. Restart the Mail app and re-import the Mail folder from the desktop. I was told not to directly copy the Mail folder from the desktop into the ~/Library folder.
    4. Go back into .Mac in System Preferences and re-enter my account information.
According to AppleCare, things should now work. But there's a little problem with this "solution." I spoke with my network admin and he told me that incoming traffic on port 143 is blocked. That being the case, I fail to see how any of the above steps will solve my problem. It seems nothing more than an issue of trying to get my network admin to open port 143 and he seems reluctant to do that.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Richard

I've solved this problem. Well, actually, I didn't do anything other than:
    1) Rebooting my computer, then...
    2) Following the instructions at the top of the following thread to re-create my email accounts (I had two):
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1598309#1598309
Not sure what this fixed, and how I got into this issue in the first place.
I had four or five days worth of email to come in... it took...
    ...a...
    ...long...
    ...time...
But its looking like its working.
A few things I tried, and although they didn't have an immediate effect to fix the connection refused problem, they might have kicked something to start something working again:
    1) Created a new 'test' user on the system, restarted, logged in as that user, and started Mail.app setting it up with .Mac settings (it was after this everything worked)
    2) Changed SSL ports in the accounts settings (no difference)
    3) Turned firewall on and off (no difference)
    4) Attempted to use Thunderbird to read .Mac email as IMAP mailbox (didn't work)
Hope this rather obvious help helps anyone else

I have 3 mail accounts in apple mail. One of them has had the spinning ball going for several days and I cannot receive mail in this account or delete messages etc. For some  reason, I CAN send mail on Apple mail using this account, although it takes several minutes. I can receive mail in this account on my iPad and by signing into aol on safari and internet explorer on my office PC. It's obviously a glitch in Apple's Mail. I've deleted this account and reopened it in Mail on my Mac Pro with no difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this E amil account is major to my business.

sounds like a corrupt database or index
the glitch is your home folder and mail folder, esp look at syncservices
I'd post in the mail or Lion forum where you will find similar issues being discussed.

  • I frequently receive a notice from Mail that it "can't connect" to my yahoo mail account, despite the fact that I can receive mail from that account. The banner appears with my coded password highlighted and asks me to choose 'cancel' or 'ok'.

I frequently receive a notice from Mail that it 'can't connect' to my Yahoo account despite the fact that I am able to receive mail from that account. It appears with the name of my Yahoo account, my password (coded), and the choice to 'cancel' or 'ok'. If I click either, the banner goes away but comes back soon. I can open Mail and see that all accounts are online. I get the banner SEVERAL time during a session - very annoying!
I have several accounts, but this only happens with Yahoo and sometimes Hotmail. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this Mail issue?
    Thanks.

I have 5 IMAP and 1 POP (Hotmail).
    The Yahoo is IMAP.

  • HT4864 Is anyone having problems receiving mail on iCloud right now?

Is anyone having problems receiving mail on iCloud right now?

My daughter is having problems, has since last night. So, I guess she is one of you 1.1% who are affected. My husband & I are not having the problem. Since she is at work, I did some research on the problem for her and bumped into this forum. I did respond to the Report to Apple. She did the same several times. I hope everyone is reporting when that window option pops up so that Apple can see the real size of the problem....

  • Ipad 2 not auto receiving mail from IMAP account

    Hi, I have an iPad 1 & 2 and an iPhone 3Gs.
I have may email accounts with different servers, Apple, Yahoo, Google & 1&1.
All auto receive mail via push, except for the 1&1 acc on the iPad2.
Checked & double checked settings are same as on iPhone & iPad 1 which both receive mail from that account without issues.
The only way I can get to see new mail from the 1&1 acc on it is to open the mail app and sit back for it to come in!
What could I possibly be doing wrong? Is anyone else having the same issue?

I am. I have a G5 and an iPad. I can get my mail from the G5, or by logging onto the server via Internet, but my mail app tells me it can't connect to the server. I've tried all the fixes on the other, similar threads... Set both fetch to manual, hard restart, reconfigure, etc. I can get it to work once after hard reboot.

  • Help please: can't receive mail on POP account.

Can someone help me? I can't receive emails on my POP account. I am using 10.6.8 os and apple mail 4.6. I'm able to send messages using port 587. Trying to get ready for business launch on Wednesday. Thanks for your help!

Just curious - were you ever able to receive mail or did you recently set this account up and encounter the problem?
As a paying Dreamhost customer, you should have access to their 24/7 tech support. The basic Apple mac.app account set-up is very straight-forward (at least with web mail).
If this is a new account with no received messages, simply deleting it and going through the set-up again is no big deal. Remember, use IMAP instead of POP3 to receive messages. POP3 pulls the only copy of the message off the server and delivers it to your mail client/computer. Since there is no back-up copy of the data on the server, this is bad news if anything happens to it locally.
Here's a basic tutorial on adding/deleting accounts (just in case):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84cYMuVsLp0
Check out this thread as well - appears that even after deleting an account the name of the old account might remain:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4094214?start=0&tstart=0
To summarize, I would try the following:
1.) Contact Dreamhost and explain your issue - it could be a problem on their end. Don't be shy about using their tech support; you pay for it!
2.) If Dreamhost finds nothing amiss on their end, you could delete and re-enable your account via mail.app (keeping in mind the caveats about backing-up all received POP3 messages and the potential sender account bug from the thread). Use IMAP if possible.
3.) If that does not work for you, try another Mail client. I recommend Thunderbird, but there are other free options:
    http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/communication-roundup/8-awesome-alternatives-to -mail-app-on-your-mac/
I doubt that this is causing the problem, but you could also disable your firewall (System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall) and see if that changes anything.
Hope one of these works for you.

  • Problems receiving mail from exchange after upgrading to Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks I am having issues receiving e-mail. Activity doctor says I am connected to Exchange server but Mail.app won't donwload e-mail. I have heard this is an issue on OS X Mavericks. Any idea on how to solve this?

I solved the problem by disabling all Internet Accounts in the System Preference and re-enabling them one by one.  I found that a few settings crashed the Mail app., mainly for those Microsoft Exchange accounts.  I deleted them and set them up again then it works fine now.  No more crash when I open the Mail app.  Hope this procedure helps those with similar problems, too.

  • Send and receive mail from different accounts.

I'm new to everything and I just posted this in the iPod forum, but I'm now thinking it belongs here.
How do I receive mail from my Gmail account and send from another account?
I have the incoming server as an IMAP and it works fine. The outgoing mail server is the problem. It's set up as a different username and everything, and it STILL sends it through my GMail account. I deleted the outgoing smtp gmail server with no success. What should I do?
    Thanks!

    Ernie,
You beat me to the punch... I was just about to reply with a follow-up asking if there was a way to do just that. Looks like I may need to use the separate accounts option in order to allow my to have Full Name information that is more helpful. For now, it won't be a problem because I only need 2 different addresses. If that changes in the future, however, I can see how it would be a problem.
It would be simple if I could add a comma-separated list of Full Names in the Full Name field (in the same order as the list of addresses) and have them match up.
Hmmm... might have to try that, just to see if it would work!
    Thanks again.

  • Anyone else having problems receiving mail on outlook on iPad, iPhone and Mac.

  • Cannot receive mail on some accounts

I have three email accounts each with different passwords and after working satisfactorily for years I am finding that I am not able to receive mail one one of the accounts on either computer at any time and one account receives mail only intermittently on one computer but not at all on the laptop. The third (least used) account works perfectly all the time on both computers. I can also send mail on all three with no trouble. The message I get is that the password has been rejected by the server. I have checked the account settings many times and they all seem fine and have also checked my mail on my iPod touch which can see that there are many messages on my server which will not download on to my iMac and laptop.
'Connection Doctor' says that all my accounts have connected.
What on earth can be wrong?

Have tried re-setting the password in Keychain but no improvement. Have also re-set my password with my ISP but still no joy. Both computers still refuse to access one account totally and the iMac sometimes works with one of the problem accounts. My iPod touch accesses all accounts all the time but I have now discovered that my wife's iPod touch will not access one account but happy with the other two. The position seems crazy. Four separate devices all having varying degrees of success at varying times. The only hardware that they have in common is the Airport Express and D-Link ADSL modem. Could this be the problem?

  • Microsoft Office Entourage, problem receiving mail

I have set up Microsoft Entourage to send E-Mail but it will not receive E-mail.
Whenever I select the button (Click here for advanced settings) ((in the receiving mail part of preferences)) the advanced settings window pops up, I then click the box (Override default POP Port) then I change to the correct POP port.
I then exit the advanced settings window with all the settings correct, Entourage automatically turns off the override button, I then cannot receive E-mail.
Whatever I do it will always turn off the override POP box
Does anyone know why? And maybe how to fix the problem?
    Thank You

Since Entourage is not an Apple product, you should really consider posting your question on Microsoft's own forums for Entourage, as they would be more focused on the issue than an Apple forum that deals with Apple's own Mail and Address Book applications:

  • Problems receiving mail to Mail Server

I have recently purchased the Mac Mini with OSX Server Lion on it.
We love the services, and have been able to setup Mail, Webmail, Web and several others.
We setup a domain name: zehnder.ca
We decided that since we have only 1 server with many services, that we would just keep all the naming simple:
    ONE Hostname: zehnder.ca for everything
So the Server is setup as hostname: zehnder.ca
Mail is setup to serve: zehnder.ca
We are able to send email out, but we cannot receive mail in. If a user emails us, they get a 553 Error:
    Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 553 553 Relaying disallowed (state 14).
So I've been reading online about MX records and whatnot. We setup the MX record to still point to zehnder.ca eventhough we read it wasn't important since we use the same hostname as the domain name.
I dont see why this doesn't just work. We have the ports all open for SMTP, POP, IMAP, HTTP, HTTPS, Secure-SMTP etc and still we cannot get it to work.
Anyone have any ideas on the 553 error? Why can't we get this to work?
    Thanks for any help,
    Philippe and Patrick

Always a good source to check your server configuration is mxtoolbox.com
Your server is flat-out rejecting any SMTP connections. Based on what I've found, this is probably tied to your DNS settings.
I'm going to make the assumption that you have about Zero-Experience being a SysAdmin..
First, I would get in communication with Shaw and make sure they have a PTR record in their DNS to map your IP address to the server name. Most cable companies require that you have a PTR record with them for your static IP for the services to work. Your MX record is set to server.zehnder.com and the PTR record with Shaw should match that.
Your current DNS resolves like this:
    zehnder.ca.                    86400          IN          SOA          ns41.1and1.com. hostmaster.1and1.com. 2011102213 28800 7200 604800 86400
    zehnder.ca.                    86400          IN          NS          ns41.1and1.com.
    zehnder.ca.                    86400          IN          NS          ns42.1and1.com.
    zehnder.ca.                    86400          IN          MX          10 server.zehnder.ca.
There are several problem here, namely that your server is not the SOA (Start Of Authority) for your domain. You are also using 1and1.com as your nameservers; your domain registration should point to your server as being the nameserver, which you can change with your domain registrar. And without having the proper SOA resolving (and hence a reverse lookup), most of your services - including email - are going to have issues that require resolving your domain to your server.
Your reverse lookup should map your IP address to your domain name, like:
    4.73.57.in-addr.arpa.
(Yes, that is correct - entries in DNS resolve right-to-left, and the last block of the address is not needed.)
Once you have DNS sorted out and resolving properly, incoming mail should start working. If it doesn't, check the mail configuration so that your hostname matches your MX entry and that you are not using any hostaliases other than localhost.
Hope that gives you a good starting point.
    -Doug
