Help setting up my print server!

Hello all, just call me stupid but I have tried and tried to hook up a Linksys Wireless printserver to my system. I am running a airport extreme now using the 192 ip range and cannot get this item to work at all. I the print server hooked up to a HP 5L via a parallel cable and as long as I have the lan cable connected I can print via my Windows machine but not the Mac. I am stumped on how to make this a wireless connection without having to use the lan cable.

I'm going to assume you are able to get the print server on to your network, using the web based setup tools. All you need from that is what the IP address of the print server is.
The print driver provided by HP doesn't do network printing (or scanning, etc, either). It's for USB only. You need a CUPS driver to use standard network protocols on OS X. Install the 3 parts of hpijs from here:
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
To Add the printer, first make sure it is plugged into the first port on the print server. Then select IP printer > HP Jetdirect protocol, then select Officejet 6200 Series driver. Done.
(Page 19 of the print server manual tells me the print server supports two "standard" protocols - TCP/IP raw (=HP Jetdirect) and LPD.)

  • Help Setting Up Wifi Printer...

I have gone to my parents house for the weekend and brought my Macbook with me. It seems he upgraded his old Dell printer for the new All-in-one Dell 948 Wifi. I can see the printer on my Network, but I can't seem to add the printer using my Printer Utility, can someone help set-up this printer. BTW I do know the IP Address of the printer and the MAC address, I was told I have to log into the Wifi Network in order to print, or I could do ad-hoc.
    Cheers,
    Paul

I don't thinl it's Postscript and I don't think there is a Dell Driver for it. Any third party solutions?

  • Setting up a print server OR securing/password protect a networked printer

    ok...here's my problem:
i manage a 25-person creative department. several other coworkers - outside of my department, keep using our two networked printers. i need to find some way to password protect or limit access to the printers to only those in my department.
currently, the printers are online and those of us on Macs access them via AppleTalk. they also have a static IP and some using PCs access them via the IP printing. the printers are a Xerox Phaser 7700 color laser and a GCC Elite 20/1200 b&w laser.
i have a Dual 2.5 G5 that we use as our department file sharing server. anyway i can set up some sort of printer server on it and only let authorized users print?
anyway i can use the "print sharing" feature on it? i've read post about using CUPS...but that scared me...over my head!
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

Connect the two printers via USB to the server.
Now it gets harder. Copy the file cupsd.conf by going to the Go menu > Go To Folder /etc/cups. Drag the file cupsd.conf to the desktop (it makes a copy).
Edit the cupsd.conf (on desktop) with Text Edit or Text Wrangler from BBEdit. Find the line
#<Location /printers> and remove the # (which means uncomment that line).
    Now find
    ## Require a username and password (Basic Authentication)
uncomment the two lines just below that:
    #AuthType Basic
    #AuthClass User
    Now find the next #</Location>
and uncomment it. (It's about 5 lines down from AuthClass User)
Save the file. You have now created a new version of cupsd.conf that will require user authentication.
To install it, Start up the terminal. Type these commands:
    cd /etc/cups
    sudo mv cupsd.conf cupsd.conf.old
(when it asks for password, use the same one you use for installing software)
sudo cp [Drag the cupsd.conf from desktop here] cupsd.conf
(the drag types the file location for you)
Restart the Mac - it's an easy way to get CUPS to recognize the changed configuration.
At this point, you must make sure that every print user has an account on the server and that the password is the one they will use for printing - I recommend the same password they log onto their own computer with. Keychain on each computer should do the authentication after the first time.
    Good luck.

  • HELP setting up a classroom server!

I run a mac lab at a middle school and would like to (a) have individual student accounts (we don't right now) so they can access the computers from anywhere in the school, (b) be able to install/software and manage the network from one location instead of having to go to each of the 40 computers in the lab, and (c) eventually be able to link up our iBook carts and teacher computers to the server.
One question that comes to mind is will it be very slow for users to access/use the programs (e.g. iMovie, PowerPoint) and their saved files if a lot of them use the software at the same time?
Other than OSX Server, what software should I get (e.g. Remote Desktop)?
Obviously, I want everything to be forward compatible as Apple updates its OS to Leopard and beyond.
What other kinds of questions do I need to ask before I go ahead?
What other comments/suggestions do you have as I try to bring my lab into the 21st century?
    Thanks very much!
    Gary

    Hi MisterE,
I suggest you go to the Mac OS X tab at the top of the web page, then the sub menu server, then Documentation at the top of the page, and you will find alot of pdf's that will answer your question's, give you more, and answer most of those also.
I suggest you start with "Deploying Mac OS X Computers for K-12 Education" This will give you some Idea's and point you to the other pdf's you will want to read.
I also am making the jump into the '21st century" and I can tell you this is going to take you some time to set up. I started 3 months ago and have 80+ Network home folders over AFP on 2 Xserver's (1 for homes the other for lg database's) I am Running my internal DNS, using Open Dir for authentication. This is all for the Teaching/Admin staff.
Each of those servers are running 2 partitions, 1 for system, 1 for data, with 3 HD's 1st 2 are set up for raid, and with the 3rd I make a back up copy.
I am now starting to set up a 3rd server to netboot and image, that will replace an old 1.2 server, for the students.
I am a self taught mac man, however I have taken the "Mac OS X Support Essentials" and "Mac OS X Server Essentials" Class's. I found the classes helpful and they showed me alot of possibilities.
    Good Luck!

  • Setting up a print server for 5 USB printers

I have seven Macs in the house all networked through hubs and a router.
Does anyone know how to set-up five USB ink-jet printer through a print server from Linksys. I current use all on one shared G5, so all can choose the printers.
My first attempt by getting the IP address of the print server was sucessful, but apparently I need port information. Also, the print server feeds into a USB hub, then to the printers. Is this possible?

In my limited search for a USB print server, I recall that you cannot connect them through a Hub. Look in the documentation to see if it can do this. I doubt it, though.

  • Help setting up a File Server

    Hello,
I have a few questions about setting up a file server with Mac OS X 10.5 Server.
I have set up a sub domain name for the server to use... I just don't know how to get the dynamic IP address to contact the domain name so can ftp to the server... Mac Server is very new to me and I have know Idea on how to set it up...
FYI we plan to run the file server on a G5 Mac Pro, With a dynamic IP.
    -Ron

You will not find this an easy setup to achieve.. the TC is not accessible remotely with BTMM unless it is the main router in the network.. and this is not possible when the Uverse is installed as the main router.
The other method is to open AFP to outside access.. read the Tesserax methods here.
AirPort Disk - Remote Access (3 Methods)
The last method can be adjusted for using any brand router.. you do not need to port translate.. simply open port 548 to TC bridged behind the Uverse. It must be static IP so set that on the Uverse. And you will likely need to use ddns which is also built into the uverse.
Good luck with the treatment.. I had a bone marrow transplant for Lymphoma 20years ago.. still alive.

  • Help Setting up Mac Mini Server for Printer/File Sharing to Windows comp.

Hi, so in our office, we decided only to switch half of the office to macs for budgetary reasons. We purchased the mac mini server to replace the 5,000 year old one and have also gotten to macbooks and a mac mini. My other two co-workers unfortunately still are using two windows vista machines. We have important documents on the server hard drive and they also need our OLD ACT! database to access from it and I have not been able to get them to access the hard drive. Can someone please walk me through these steps? Also, ideally we want to be able to access this servers hard drive when we are out of the office and edit word documents and such, but I also have not been able to do that or make that work. Any help in these areas would be greatly appreciated!

If you use a different login name for the network account to your existing local account then the local account will not be affected. You might want to transfer the contents of your existing local account to the new network account. To do this you could try the following
    Create new network account
    Login using old local account
Now while logged in using old local account - connect to the File Server
    Enter the new login details
It should hopefully list the Share that stores your new network account, complete the connection
You should now have the Share mounted, copy the contents of your local account to the corresponding location in your new network account
Note: The Library folder in your home directory contains all your settings
Once complete logout of the old local account
Try logging in to the new account
In terms of limitations, it is going to be slower than a local account because it has to go across the network, and some badly written applications may have some issues but most will be fine.
At this stage your local account has not yet been deleted so if you have problems you can revert to it.

  • Need help setting up Flex on server (sdk?)

This should be a simple noob question:
I have Flex Builder on my local machine. I've created an
application (project.mxml) that uses VideoDisplay to play some
videos chosen from a List using an XML file as the data source. The
app works great testing on my local machine.
I now wish to take my project and put it on my Windows 2k3
    server.
I copied over my project directory to the server at
D:\Flex\ProjectName, and I set a website in IIS using home
    directory D:\Flex.
At this point, I go to my local machine and punch in the URL,
    http://10.xxx.xxx.xxx:8700/ProjectName/bin/project.html,
which brings up my application UI. I can see the app, it looks
identical to my local machine. However, when I go to select my
video from the List, nothing plays. I've included a function that
checks for connection and it doesn't report back with an alert.
As for the server, it has the newest version of Flash player
(not sure if this is even needed on server side?) and it also has
the Flex Data Services 2 installed (yes, I'm using Flex 2). I don't
even think I need the FDS2 installed at the moment since I'm not
really connecting to any data sources other than this xml file, but
I installed it as a precaution since i have it installed on my
local machine. This is as far as the server is setup for Flex. I've
looked at documentation and its not clear to me as to what needs to
be on the server to get Flex apps to work. Do I need to install
Flex Builder on the server? Or the SDK? And what files am I
supposed to give the server from my local machine? I've spent a
great deal of time on this to see it fail on the server, so any
    help is appreciated.

I've added FLV to the MIME extensions list and restarted
    WWWPS
Still no video connection. Sigh, this is weird. I am able to
directory browse and I can see the videos.
Something strange happens though. If I directory browse to
/vids/, I can see all my FLV's. However when I click on one, it
gives me a "Server Error" - Either the Macromedia application
server is unreachable or it does not have a mapping to process this
    request.
I changed my script a bit to point to another XML file
    located on the web,
    http://ws.jamesward.org/youtube.xml
and modified my dataProvider and the source spots to fit his
structure and it displayed his youtube videos.
I'm going to try using full URL addressings for each video
url on my XML file, though I think I did this already without
    progression.
Let me know about that error I reported.
EDIT: Using the full URL didn't work. It's still giving me a
    connection failed alert.
EDIT2: I made a new mxml file with just a
<mx:VideoDisplay> control only. I set the source to the full
URL path of a single video on my server and tested the app locally.
It would not display the video. I then set the source to the
relative path of the same video on my local machine and the video
played. So it's definitely something with my server handling these
    FLV's.
EDIT3: Just to note, my server also has ColdFusion 7.0.2
running on it. I don't know if that explains the error
    above?

  • Need help setting up network printer...

    Good afternoon.
I have an HP 2600n printer connected to my network through my router... I've got the printer working through my Windows Laptop and printing over the network. I have the printer assigned a static IP address.
I can't for the life of me get it to show up, assign it, or anything on my mini... I've got two more Apple iBooks in my house that I want to set up too, but thought I'd start with the mini. Tried the istallation disc, and it goes through and tells me the install is finished. Gone to print utility, etc... just can't figure this one out.
If anyone can give me a hand it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Okay, I just needed to know...
Another thing you can check is your AppleTalk setting. Go to your System Preference, Network, (Ethernet or Airport, however you're connected to your network), AppleTalk, and make sure AppleTalk is active.
If not active, activate it and apply the change and go back to printer setup, add, IP Printer and hit more printers button at bottom, it'll give you another window for AppleTalk printers, see if you printer comes up there.
    I hope this helps,
    Alex

  • Help Setting Up 2nd Mail Server

I am running Mac OS 10.4 server. I have several web sites running on this server but only one of the domains currently has a mail server. I use Server Admin & Workgroup Manager to administor as I am not very unix savvy.
Here is what I have done so far.
Created the domain: m2venturepartners.com in the web:sites section
Created the Web Server Alias mail.m2venturepartners.com under the Web:Site:Aliases section
Since the DNS and website is hosted elsewhere I had them create the MX record that points to mail.m2venturepartners.com and a DNS record that points mail.m2venturepartners.com to 209.233.105.38 the ip address for my server.
I created mail users with the workgroup manager enabling mail and adding the mail server: mail.m2venturepartners.com
At this point I set up a user client and successfully logged into both the imap & smtp servers. But when I send an email to a [email protected] it comes back with the following failure notice:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.

I'm lost as to what to do under the Mail section of Server Admin. Because this section was filled in when I set up my original domain (theteelfamily.com) and I can't figure out how to add additional domains.
Can someone help me get this 2nd mail server up receiving mail?
    Thanks

I am having the same sort of problems as you - and I have not been able to resolve my problems as yet. The document which was referred to earlier might be helpful, but I have not been able to get this to work, and Apple don't seem to offer any real Postfix support. I can get outgoing mail to work but incoming mail is always rejected for one reason or another (550 nu such mailbox is the usual problem).

  • Need help setting up a Git server.

Been following this guide. But it is missing a part regarding SSH support. When I add a locale server, IP-based. It gives me some error about line length and access denied. I suspect that it tries to connect with the wrong user, or something. I have a password on the git user, since it can't be blank.
Could anyone help me with this. I plan on update the with what I learn here. Adding a locale Git server with SSH support.
The server is updated with the latest software. We use a static IP, and SSH is working perfectly.
    Ed1t: Fixed typo in subject.

The first thing to realize is that git works on directories. Network protocols are really just to get access to the remote directory that contains the git repository.
    Let's say you've got a ~/code directory.
    Enter dir: cd ~/code
    Create a file: touch oldfile
    Init repo: git init
    Add oldfile: git add oldfile
    Commit oldfile: git commit -a
Now you're ready to clone the repo. We'll do it locally for easy testing.
Move to home dir: c d~
Clone it to another dir: git clone ~/code clone
Now you've got a ~/clone directory (and repository) that is a clone of the ~/code repository. There is a file named oldfile there (so you know the clone worked)
Now in ~/clone you can create a file: 'touch newfile'.
Add it to be tracked: 'git add newfile'.
Commit the change: 'git commit newfile' OR 'git commit -a' (to commit all changes, which is just this one in this case)
Now push it to the original ~/code repo: 'git push'
Now anytime you pull or clone from the repo you'll get both oldfile and newfile because they are both in the repo (newfile won't show up in the ~/code directory, though) That's really all there is to git at its most basic level. You clone, edit/add files, commit locally, then push to the server.
So now that you've got your repo working you want remote access. If you can ssh into the computer hosting the ~/code repo then you've already got remote access. Use the username of the user whose home directory ~/code resides in (you can worry about real permissions later, as that's a Linux question, not a git question).
From remote computer, clone the repo:
    cd ~
    git clone ssh://remoteuser@remoteserver/home/remoteuser/code code
Now you have a local ~/code repo and working directory. We operate on it just like we did when we created the ~/clone repo on the other computer. You'll have files named oldfile and newfile if you followed the steps earlier. Let's work on this remote repo:
Create a new file: touch hello.c
Add it to be tracked by git: git add hello.c
    Commit: git commit -a
    Push to server: git push
That's it. The server will have hello.c. If somebody else updates the server you can run 'git pull' to get those changes. Anybody else who runs 'git pull' or clones the repo will have your hello.c
    Simple? Yes!
Please note that my example is a very simple setup and you may need something more complex, but once you've got the basics it's not hard adding one or two more commands to do exactly what you want.

  • Need help setting up dnla media server

I have gone to the forum to read what others are using to setup a media server on their intel iMac.  I have a 2010 i5 quad core 27" mac and just got a new Panasonic plasma DLNA TV with all of the internet apps.  I have Directv with the whole home network that was setup using my Qwest wireless modem/router.  Now, that I have a TV that can access my files on my computer I have tried the following apps, TwonkyMedia, XBMC, iSedora and none of them shows up when I select on my TV the DLNA icon, it says no media server found.
In my network pane I can see Location: Automatic, Status: Connected, Configure IPv4: Using DHCP, along with the IP Address and other listings.  Under the Security and Privacy pane I have Firewire: ON, and when I look at the advanced settings I can see that all of the applications that I tried shows that they have access for incoming connections.
I have file sharing off on everything except Bluetooth sharing.
Since I have my Directv HD receiver in the living room and the whole home networking, I have taken an ethernet cable and hooked it to a Belkin router to my ethernet connection on the receiver, and another one from the router to the TV.  I have internet access now on my new TV, and my Onkyo AV receiver, but when I try to use any of the media server applications, my TV says it can't find the DLNA server.
Is there a setting that I should access in the Network or File Sharing pane to allow these programs to work.  I am running Lion 10.7.2.
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

    Hi Dansyacht,
Yes, I tried Medialink server.  One thing that concerns me is with apps like TwonkyMedia a web based server that any of my folders could be viewed by others or get personal information.  Whereas the media servers for my computer seem safer, is that a concern to worry about?
I just tried on Saturday before posting this the Medialink server, I can see my pictures, music, and video files listed in the window.  But when I go to my Panasonic tv and select dlan the window does not list any IP addresses.  I am wondering if I should reset my router, or change something in any of the panes listed above.  As I said above I can access the internet via my router on my tv, so I don't know what I am doing wrong with these applications, settings etc.
I just tried the Medialink app again and now in the window under devices I see "Unsupported Device, Generic Remote Device with a list of four IP address.  This is also happening with my new Panasonic Blu-ray player which is also hooked up to the Belkin router.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Daisymay

  • Help setting up Software Updates server?

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up an Apple Software Updates server inside my network (to save bandwidth) but I'm a PC geek, not a mac maniac so I'm a bit confused about how I need to apply the update server's location to the client computers. I think I need the use the workgroup manager but I really have only a very limited idea of how it works.
Can you please guide me through it? Or at least defer me to a how-to guide that relating to these matters.

If you have Apple Remote Desktop you can send a Unix command to change the software update URL. For me, I had to actually change it in two locations:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http ://myserver.mycompany.net:8088/
defaults write /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http ://myserver.mycompany.net:8088/
(Note: I had to add a space after the "http" and the ":" to keep the Discussions from making a link.)
