Help wanted: Building jsp chat
Hi!
I am currently working on a school project where we're building a chat. We use jsp as server side programming language.
We store the messages in a MySQL database.
Now to the problem:
We want the message window to be updated everytime any user writes something eg. the user can see when someone writes something. We have thought of using the HTML meta tag "refresh", but there has to be a better way? Got any ideas?

Personally I am not sure that I would use JSP to build a chat application because JSP was not really meant for interactive user responses. If you are using JSP because the assignment requires JSP then I understand.
I would consider creating some sort of simple client-side applet that interacts with a serverside java app. This might require a little more work because you would have to work out some sort of simple protocol and pass the data over via a socket connection, but doesnt that sound like fun? :) The server side app could still query the DB but it would also be able to update client applets.
Seriously though, if you have to use JSP then I would agree that your best bet at refreshing entries would be to use the HTTP refresh meta tag. For best performance you will want to make sure that if no new entries to the DB have been added since the last refresh that you simply send a static version of the last page so that JSP doesnt have to build the page every time each clients web browser refreshes.

Hi all,
I need a little help with building a new comp and any help will be appericiated.
My wife is a video editor and she needs a new CPU.
She is editing HD films from various cameras (she have several clients).
The budget is around 1500-2000$ for the CPU without screens and software which she already owns.
She is working with CS5.5 and using windows 7 pro 64bit.
I read quite a lot in the past few days and I ended up more confused then I was, this is the setup which I thought of:
CPU: I was thinking about the i7 960 3.2 (310$) or the i7 2600k (330$).
MB: Asus p6x8D 1366 ddr 1600
Graphics: Gigabyte nVidia GTX460 1gb gddr5 (210$) or gtx560(230$) the 570 is way off the budget (440$)
BLURAY: Pioneer BDR-206
RAM: I don't know really.. I was thinking about 12gb but I am cluless about it.
Power: AX 850W Gold Active PFC 12cm Fan Modular (No particular reason, when I'll know my final setup I'll check the power I need with http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp).
Case: Antec / Thermaltake, No idea which model..
OS HDD: I'm still puzzled weather to go for the small (60gb) ssd for the OS and programs or go for a 7200 rpm hd.
HDD: W.D Caviar black 1tb 7200 rpm, 64mb, Sata III * 4 with raid on board (Raid 0 or Raid 5? - I'll save it for another thread).

When i click in a checkbox or radio button, the action (event) must make me generate dinamyc html code like show fields or forms (not hide forms or tables, just generate tables or forms whit the checkbox or radio button actions). But i wan�t use javascript just JSP, XML, XSL or whatever.
Please give me help =P plzYou can use AJAX for doing this. Or you can submit the page onchange event of the combo and get the required values from the DB and set the values in the text field.

I also upped the memory however it always gets very close to maximum allocation. It is not crashing as much however if I close flashbuilder it takes ages to load the workbench in. Are you on windows 7 also?

new to j2ee and hv exp on j2seIt's depends what OS you have:
Windows -- IIS + Tomcat
Linux(FreeBSD) -- Apache + Tomcat (or Resin, but I prefer Tomcat);
Of couse you should have a text editor to edit *.jsp file :-) -
Help in building an Expression

I am trying to write an expression that generates the following SQL:
select count (*)
from ntf_messages a, ga_languages b, ga_language_code c
where a.language_id = b.language_id
and b.language_code_id = c.language_code_id
and length(a.MESSAGE_TEXT) > 1 * (1120/c.BITS_PER_CHARACTER)
This is a simple 3 tables join with a mathematical expression that I am not sure how to implement - I was trying to use the ExpressionMath.divide(..) method, but it divides an expression by a number and not a number by expression..
My objects' structures is:
I have a notificationMessage object that has a m_messageText member of type String (mapped to a.MESSAGE_TEXT) and a m_Language member which is an embedde object of type Language.
The language object has got an m_languageCode member which is an embedded object of type LanguageCode.
The languageCode object has got a member m_bitsPerCharacter which is of type int and is mapped to the table field BITS_PER_CHARACTER of the table: ga_language_code.
I was trying to write something in the form of:
ExpressionBuilder builder = new ExpressionBuilder(NotificationMsg.class);
ReportQuery reportQuery = new ReportQuery();
reportQuery.setReferenceClass(NotificationMsg.class);
reportQuery.setSelectionCriteria(builder.get("m_messageText").length().greaterThan(1 * 1120 / builder.get("m_language.m_languageCode.m_bitsPerCharacter")) );
But this is wrong since I am dividing a number by expression, and obviously it cannot be done.

MichalI was trying to use the ExpressionMath.divide(..) method, but it divides an expression by a number and not a number by expression..This method also takes an Expression and Object parameter, which can be another expression. You can also use the Expression.value(Object) method to create an expression from a number.

Can I still build JSP for BC4J in 10g
Hi,
I recently downloaded 10g preview version and I was trying to build the JSP pages for BC4J as I did in previous 9i versions. But 10g doesn't give me that option in the File - New - Web Tier menu. There is only 1 option for plain JSP available in the menu. Is this because of 10g preview version OR did I miss sth?

LingYes you can build JSPs for BC4J backend in JDeveloper 10g.
Check out the tutorials page (linked from the JDeveloper main page http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev ) to see how it is done (a little different than the 9i way).
