HELP! What is the best PC to play Sims 3?

I am ready to buy a new PC and I need a good one, but I am lost.
Biggest concerns are playing the Sims and working with multiple graphic programs like CS4 and POser/Daz 3D.
I am not a hardcore gamer, but I would like to be able to play the Sims 3 smoothly.  Here are the requirements for the SIMS 3 (but i would like slightly above that but don't need to get crazy lol)
2.4 GHz P4 processor or better
1.5 GB Ram (hopefully more though)
128 MB Video Card w/ Pixel Shader 2.0 (don't know what this means)
6.1 GB Hard Drive w/ 1 GB extra for custom content/saved games
For computers using built-in graphics chipsets under Windows, the game requires at least: (what is this?)
Intel Integrated Chipset, GMA 3-Series or above
2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
0.5 GB additional RAM
Supported Graphics Cards: (I don't know which is better and would prefer one that comes installed already but i know nothing about video cards)
NVIDIA GE Force
FX 5900, FX 5950
6200, 6500, 6600, 6800
7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950
8400, 8500, 8600, 8800
9300, 9400, 9500, 9600, 9800
G100, GT 120, GT 130, GTS 150
GTS 250, GTX 260, GTX 280, GTX 285, GTX 295
ATI Radeon
9500, 9600, 9800
X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950
2400, 2600, 2900
3450, 3650, 3850, 3870
4850, 4870
Intel GMA
GMA 3-Series, GMA 4-Series
The graphics card or capabilities are the most confusing, please help! Or reccomend a computer that hopefully won't break the bank.
Solved!

Those are the ones that have been tested with Sims3...not that ONLY ones it works with.
Like I said, pretty much any computer, as long as you don't go dirt bottom of the barrel cheap, will run the game. You just have to ask yourself how WELL you want it to run.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • What's the best way to play a very short sound?

    I'm writing a swing application, I want to play a beep (a very short wav file) every time I press a button. (a bit like the alert sound in windows)
    I know there're different ways to play sound. I don't want to use a full-feature sound library because you tend to write more code and it going to use more RAM. I just need a simply way to play the sound.
    Any suggestions?

    Pardon my untested code, but...here's the basic idea.
    /* Global variable */
    Clip soundClip = null;
    /* Load the clip */
    public void load(String file) {
        /* Load the file into the stream */
        File af = new File("test.wav");
        AudioInputStream ais = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(af);
        /* Load the stream into the clip */
        soundClip = AudioSystem.getClip();
        soundClip.open(ais);
    /* Play the clip */
    public void play() {
        /* Don't play the clip if it hasn't been loaded yet */
        if (soundClip != null) {
            soundClip.setFramePosition(0);
            soundClip.start();

  • What is the best way to play .m4v on lcd?

    Hi. I have many movies in .m4v format in my macbook, but I really don't like having to connect every time I want to use it through thunderbolt or streaming from it. I would like to have a device which is always connected to the lcd through hdmi. I have the macbook, 2 external drives, ps3. But the ps3 must me fat32 which has the 4gb limit, so it doesn't work. I was thinking on a mac mini or the apple tv. ( nothing else comes to my mind). Though I'm not sure if the ATV would work, I have never used one. But it would be much cheaper. The mac mini would work for sure perfectly. The movies also have multiple languages in audio and subtitles, I use VLC player to play them, which works perfectly. Any suggestions on how to do this?

    Hi Rob,
    A few options for the Video_TS folder:
    - One, as kyrunner said you can use DVD player (the "Open DVD media" item under "File" menu)
    - You can use the very adaptive VLC player, which is a free project and can be downloaded here <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>
    - Another useful option is to use the great video_ts feature under "video" in Toast (7.0 or 8.0) this will allow you to drop a bunch of .VOB files off your Video_TS folder into toast, then decide what level of compression with which tracks (subtitles, supplements, audio etc.) to save. Once you're done you can save the new DVD as an image on your disk (File>Save as disk image) saving disk space since you dropped unneeded tracks but being able to double click the image and treat it like you would any real DVD (via DVD player VLC or any other).

  • Please Help, What's the best way to un-install Leopard?

    I have a new MBP 17" . I installed Leopard 2 days after I bought the machine, am having so many keyboard problems, like not being able to type and waiting around for the keyboard to start typing. It has now become very annoying and I cannot get any work done! I think I should un-install Leopard and go back to Tiger. How can I do this successfully and without losing any data. I will back up..... If any one has the answer to this it will be great. I also think that apple knows about this issue, and I think it's really bad policy on their part, not to simply say, WE ARE FIXING IT...... In-fact I think it's downright stupid of them!

    What I meant with external backup is either an external hard drive or another mac where you have a copy of all your important files/applications and you should be able to use Migration Assistant with either. If you want to use MA, it will copy all the files (you can't pick and choose), so what I did was simply connect my external hard drive to the new MBP via firewire and copied over whatever I needed. Since I also keep copies of all installer .dmg's (updates or applications) on the external, I copied those over as well and then just installed my (some third party) applications and/or updates. If you don't have an external hard drive, you should also be able to connect your Powerbook and new MBP via ethernet cable and copy your files over. I used that method as well, using my internet ethernet cable (temporarily disconnected from my cable modem) and following the directions under Mac Help -> Filesharing. I've found both the firewire and ethernet methods easy and quick and they worked for me because I wanted to pick which files I wanted to copy to the new machine (rather than all of them).
    I will wait for quite a while before installing Leopard again (if at all); not only because of the keyboard issue, but Disk Utility seems to have some major problems, and so does the System itself (showing up during 20+ minutes of every Permissions Repair with 71 full pages of "ACH found but not expected in..." listing what seems to be every single system file). I also prefer to open the contents of a folder from the dock in alphabetical order, rather than the admittedly cool looking icons - when you have 120+ items/folders in that folder, it's a waste of time to get through all of those icons. And Spaces didn't work for me either. So, except for the cool desktop picture, I wasn't at all impressed with Leopard. However, I did use the included iLife 08 (except iMovie 08) and custom installed that once I had Tiger up and running.

    Completely compatable, I just upgraded my iPhone through it yesterday. But as these are the Lion Forums, you may be better places posting this in the iPhone Forums as well.

  • Do I get better results/ keeping the battery's life longer by charging only when it comes to 5-10% or should I let it empty and then charge it? Someone told me also to turn it off while I charge it... So help what is the best way to keep long life battery

    I got the new iPad on June 2012 and I wish to keep the long life of the battery as much as I can. I always and only use the cable that comes with the product and never charge it through computer.
    Should I:
    1) wait till baterry is completely empty, pratectly dead and then charge it?
    2) charge it when it reach 5%-10%.
    3) turn off the iPad when I charge the battery?
    Thank you apple support :)

    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
    How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • What is the best device for playing music from my iphone 4 through my car stereo via Bluetooth?

    Do Apple recommend any products or do they sell one?

    Apple does not recommend nor sell any.  Read online stereo reviews and form your own opinion as to what what's best.

  • Need help - what is the best way to move CS5 from my old XP machine to a new Win 7 64 bit platform?

    Is there a preferred method to do this?

    While saving your actions and brushes into files that can be loaded into the new installation is a good idea, I'd STRONGLY recommend against trying to copy your settings (i.e., the "internal" settings files) because they might have machine-specific stuff in them that will cause heartburn on the new machine.
    Here's an idea:
    1.  Install Photoshop CS5 onto your new system.  You get two activations with one license, so there's no rush to deactivate the old one just yet.
    2.  Set up your workspace the way you like it on your new system, and save it as a named workspace.
    3.  Methodically go through all the settings (Edit - Preferences, and the fly-out menus on the panels) on the new system.
    4.  Jot down all the changes you make so you can do it again if ever you should need to.
    5.  Keep both machines for a little while so you can go back and see the old settings if something seems different.
    6.  Deactivate Photoshop on the old system before permanently retiring it.

    Nick,
    You will need a Windows PC with iTunes running and a working copy of Windows Media Player available on the machine.  (iTunes calls WMP for the conversion from WMA).  Then just drag the WMA file(s) into the iTunes Music window.
    iTunes will detect it and give you the dialog shown below, to which you choose "Convert."  iTunes will create a new version in the format/bitrate set in your Import preferences (MP3 in my example below), and immediately add it to your iTunes library.
    The WMA original will be left in place, so you can delete it if you have no other need for it.

  • I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon!

    I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

    What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
    If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
    In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
    Click to view full size
    If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
    Click to view full size
    When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • What's the best solution for audio out of sound files from a MacBook Air to both an amplifier and to a subwoofer amplifier? I'm using the MBA to play sound files for worship services at our church.

    I have a MacBook Air (13", 1.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD) that I'll be using to play sound files (primarily organ and piano) for worship services at my church. We'll be using a QSC RMX2450 650 Watts/Channel amplifier with Community CPL-27 speakers and also a JBL SUB 250P powered subwoofer with its own amplifier. What's the best option for getting sound out from the Mac to both of these amplifiers?

    if you work with own recorded sounds you might wanna have a music program where you want to work with samples, steinberg has got very good ones (so they say)... but their really really ( ²) expensive(that's why almost no one haves them), magix haves good ones too bu their more for 'unprofessional' use, ableton haves really good ones too and they're not to difficult to use (if you know a bit of those programs you learn very quickly) and if you don't get them, there is a sort of manual built in it which explains and lets you do things to start (basics)
    i hope this helped, btw stereo speakers are always better if you buy good ones (no pc speakers), but if you don't think you need them, don't buy them...
    so again, i hope you have some ideas now

  • What are the best essential apps for a newbie?? Please help...

    I'm new to Mac and in dire need of apps so that I can utilize my Mac for more than the very basic. Other than regular updates, I haven't put anything on it yet. I want to be able to do the basics - type a document/report, a sign, labels or design cupcake toppers or things for my child (a problem I've run into this week preparing for my child's birthday). I'd also like a money/finance app and wondered if there was something available than the usual Quicken. There are so many apps to choose from and I don't want to spend more than I have to or spend anything on something that I don't need or won't use. I'm all for spending money on doing it right, just need some guidance. Any suggestions?
    Another question: What's the best way to protect my Mac? I'm careful about emails, etc., and I'm scared to death to download any apps online unless it's the App Store - am I correct in thinking that it's safe??
    I appreciate any and all suggestions in advance...this has been quite the headache

    Apple's own iWork suite (+Pages, Numbers, Keynote)+ is more than enough for the vast majority of users. I'm a "power user" - I prepare manuscripts for publishing using InDesign and Microsoft Word. Those are the tools I have to work with to be as close to 100% compatible with my collaborators as possible.
    *But for all of MY document creation needs, I use Pages.* It's very powerful, providing all of the tools, templates, etc., one could want. And for presentations? Keynote is simply amazing and so much better than PowerPoint could ever hope to be. (and FYI, we're expecting anydaynow that Apple will release iWork '11... +since there is no indication from Apple whether those who purchase iWork '09 apps will have free or discounted upgrates to iWork '11 apps, you might want to wait+).
    Labels is the one thing that catches a lot of folks when they move to the Mac - they expect it to be a part of the word processor (Pages), when it's really in a more logical place - *Address Book*! Use AB to track your contacts. Make groups of contacts (like, Christmas list), Select the group you want to print onto labels, and choose File-->Print. In the Print dialogue, you'll find options to choose various label formats and other customizations.
    Two essential additions are Perian and Flip4Mac. These are two System Preference add-ons that will allow your Mac to play WMV and other multimedia files that you may encounter on the internet.
    For much more information and suggestion for new Mac owners, check out the Mac Help section at the Canadian Mac User's forum, ehmac.ca! We have a thread specific to your question, always pinned to the top of the forum
