Help with memory allocation on Solaris 10

I am trying to make a FEM analysis that requires at least 6,5 GB of memory according to software's logging. I have increased the per project memory limit to 12 GB, machine has 8 GB of RAM and 6 GB of swap. But the analysis fails every time to "out of memory"
Here's a list of limits I've taken with prctl for this process. I am hoping that someone is better of with Solaris kernel parameters than I am.

  • New to Oracle - could really use help with memory configuration

I'm new to Oracle and am assuming the support role on a system that is using Oracle 8.1.7 as the database server and need help with memory configuration.
The server is being used with FileNet and we're having issues while trying to purge logs (purge never completes) and the disk drive activity LED is on almost solid. My guess is is that it's not using enough/doesn't have enough memory therefore constantly reading off the disk and going too slow to finish the purge between nightly backups in which the database service is stopped.
The server is running on Windows 2000 Server SP4, has 1G of RAM and is dual-Xeon processor.
Any help or starting point references would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ...
You can use a StatsPack for guess the best distribution memory with your DB needs.

  • Urgent help with memory issue (ORA-04031)

    Hi Geeks,
Came Across this below error in alert log in of our databases. Interestingly this error only pops up while the database backup runs. Below are the memory parameters.
    memory_max_target big integer 14G
    memory_target big integer 13G
    pga_aggregate_target big integer 0
    sga_target big integer 0
    shared_pool_reserved_size big integer 192M
    shared_pool_size big integer 0
ORA-04031: unable to allocate 5792 bytes of shared memory

    Errors in file /apps/opt/oracle/diag/asm/+asm/+ASM1/trace/+ASM1_lmd0_14123.trc
I have tried specifying a value to shared_pool_size but with no luck..!! Pls help. I am not sure how to resolve this.

Hi, ORA-4031 in this case can be caused by unrestricted growth of the PGA, thus forcefully reducing the SGA.
We've had this in the past also.
The solution is in older versions to increase the shared_pool_size as you mentioned but with ASMM, this is no longer an option. You can however retrict the growth of the PGA by setting SGA_TARGET.
On our system this now looks like:
    SQL> show parameter _target
    NAME                                 TYPE                 VALUE
    db_flashback_retention_target        integer              1440
    memory_max_target                    big integer          10G
    memory_target                        big integer          10G
    pga_aggregate_target                 big integer          0
sga_target                           big integer          8GSee how we in fact set the max growth of the PGA to 2Gb ( 10Gb - 8Gb)
Try this and see if ot works for you also

  • Help with reboot error for solaris 10

    Hi,
we have a sun sparc solaris 10 machine and recently there was a power failure and one of the server domain was down. So today morning i have powered up the domain and it returned me to ok prompt then i have booted the machine with disk from devalias, the system was up as normal and no error messages in message file. All the mount points we available as it was in vfstab. To be on safer side i have rebooted the machine and it never came back up and from xscf console i had a look and the system got repeating these messages as below
Feb  7 12:58:08 svc.startd[7]: svc:/system/sysevent:default: Method or service exit timed out.  Killing contract 19.
Feb  7 12:58:08 svc.startd[7]: svc:/system/cryptosvc:default: Method or service exit timed out.  Killing contract 22.

.Then i have powered the whole domain down. Not able to understand what the issue was and any help will be great.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
The system doesnt load up to check the svcs -vx command when rebooted. I am able to bring server up when only i did a shutdown instead of reboot. when the system was up i had a look at the services which are timed out when rebooted and all the services were fine and in online state and no error in svcs -vx.
I believe it could be something of getting time out and thought of increasing the timeout for start and stop but any ways got my issue sorted by solaris itself.
seen similar cases in google so below link could be helpful

  • Help with Oracle 10G on Solaris 9

This is a question that belongs to Oracle forum since I am only a Unix Administrator but work closely with some DBA's. I am installing Oracle Companion CD 10G on Solaris 9. The Oracle 10G software, I was able to install successfully in the past. The DBA's asked me to also install the companion CD for some added features.
Currently, the system is running Oracle 9i on Solaris 9. I installed Oracle 10G on this test environment. I have ensured to change the .profile entries in Oracle 9i and use the Oracle 10G profile so they dont overwrite one another. I have also made sure not to overwrite any files such as "oraenv" etc during the install. The install of Oracle 10G was successful. The dba's that I am trying to help out asked me if I could also install Oracle 10G companion CD 64 bit version.
I tried to install it by placing the path to Oracle 10G
But when the prerequisites started, I got the following:
"Oracle OHS Standalone can not be installed into an existing Oracle RDBMS 9.2.0.1.0 or higher Oracle home."
Now I know that at that time, I had all the Oracle instances down on 9i so it wont interfere with 10G but why is it still seeing 9.2.??? What can I do to bypass this message so I can install the Companion CD? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Help with memory leak using DAQmx & VB6

I'm using DAQmx 8 with VB6 to control an NI 6251 analog input board. The application calls for changing channel configurations as the system is running, thus there are many multiple create task/clear task calls. I've been trying to track a memory leak, so I've created a very simple VB app to help identify the source. I have a loop with the following calls in it:
    DAQmxCreateTask
    DAQmxAddGlobalChansToTask
    DAQmxCfgSampClkTiming
    DAQmxStartTask
    DAQmxReadAnalogF64
    DAQmxClearTask
I see a little over 1Kb leak per loop iteration. If I skip everything except the create task, add channels and clear task, it still shows a leak.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I not be calling CreateTask/ClearTask multiple times?
    Thanks for any help.
    mfrazer

    Mfrazer,
You definitely don’t want to have CreateTask and subsequently
ClearTask in a loop, nor does it look like you need to for your application.
You only need on task, you just need to change the task, so there is no need to
create multiple tasks. So leave the CreateTask and ClearTask on the outsides of
your loop, and keep everything else on the inside of the loop and make the
changes you need to the task each iteration. Also you are going to want to have
a DAQmxStopTask after your read to make sure the task is stopped and in the
proper state to be reconfigured. I hope that helps.

  • Help With Memory Install

    I have a new 2.8 Mac Pro.
    It comes with 2G memory.
Intending to expand to 8g, I bought 2*1G memory, and 2*2 Gig of memory. I installed but the Mac did not see it. I am sure I'm probably putting it in the wrong slots.
Could someone guide me as to where these DIMMS should be placed?
    Thanks
    Tom

When adding ram, you must put together matching pairs of fb-dimm, but it looks like this rule has an important, and confusing, exception : the stock configuration has one fb-dimm on top riser, and the second on the bottom riser. (According to what I read here and there, I have not received my macpro yet to confirm...)
So you must now put together the two stock 1Gb ram, as well as the two 2Gb and 1Gb pairs you bought. (Do not mix the sizes, nor the brands.)
So you could put 2x2Gb in slot 1 and 2 on top riser, 2x1Gb stock ram on slot 3 and 4 on top riser, and the last 2x1Gb ram you bought on slot 1 and 2 on bottom riser...
    Hope this helps,
    phjo
P.S. : the output of ABOUT THIS MAC you reported is interesting... Maybe the rules could be bent here and there for better cooling efficiency, such as putting 4 memory modules on slot 1 and 3 on top riser and bottom ? (Does not apply in your case as you have 6 dimms, but could be tested... Someone ?)

  • Help with memory management

Hi apple community - I'm at a loss.... Can someone please help me with my memory management? My computer has become so slow lately. I've read a bunch of forums and can't seem to find anything that helps. I can't find a pattern to the slowness other than when I use big files in Photoshop it slows down quite a bit, but I assume that's normal when you're editing photos that are around 1GB... My computer doesn't really seem to be releasing inactive memory at all. Once it goes inactive, I can close all the programs I want but it never becomes free. I tried applications like "Free memory" and they worked but it's not really fixing the problem and when I do re-open stuff it takes FOREVER so I didn't really like using those.  I attached a screen shot of my activity monitor... Any help would be much appreciated... thanks!

Simple fact is it looks like you have every program ever installed on your system open all at the same time.
Post how Many Processes are running. I bety it is well over 100.
Sure 8GBs is plenty of RAM IF you actually shut down, QUIT, Programs you are done using them.
Just from the SS you posted you have Spotify, Numbers, Pages, Skype and Safari all open and running, let alone what isn't shown in that SS. And now you open Photoshop and load a Large Image and you expect the system to just fly. Not going to happen. The whole Apple Mac thing of not shutting down programs when you close the last Windows that is open on the desktop has always been IMHO Very Stupid. In this Respect Windows has OS X beat Hands Down (alone with other feature that are just done better in Windows). You Click the X and the window and program close which frees up the RAM and all resources that program was using.
So Shut some of that Stuff Down. System will get faster.

  • Need Help with Simultaion for a Solar cell simulation

hello, I want to simulate a Solar Cell in Multisim and i already entered the cirquit for a solar cell. However i have a problem with the simulation.
i want to vary the load and the input power to see how the output voltage varys, as a function of input voltage. The purpose for this is to simulate later
a shunt resistor which regulates the cell voltage to a constant value?
has anyone a suggestion how to do this?

  • Still need help with changing hostname on Solaris 10

    Hello.
I have some difficulties with changing host name of my computer.
    It is DHCP Client.
AS I understand there are the following steps that I have to do:
    1. Edit the /etc/default/dhcpagent file and change the line that reads the following:
    #REQUEST_HOSTNAME=no
    to
    REQUEST_HOSTNAME=no
    2. There are two empty /etc/hostname files: hostname and hostname6.
Do I have just to put there hostname?
    3. /etc/hosts has what I need to change.
    4. I was unable to find /etc/nodename. Do I have to create it? What properties should contain this file?
    5. hostname <new hostname>
In previous time when I tried to change host name with Management Console my system crashed, I changed: /etc/hosts, but it didn't work.
    Thank you.

    Hello.
Using DHCP you may really have problems changing the hostname.
The fact is: The DNS server may assign your machine a host name which has nothing to do with the host name you sent to the DHCP server. Depending on the server (typically DHCP and DNS server are the same machine) nothing will really work. (This is the case with my configuration where the servers are located on a DSL router.)
I solved the problem the following way:
    * I created two host names (MyMachine and MyMachineNet) in the /etc/hosts file (Solaris 10 and newer: /etc/inet/ipnodes must be changed, too.)
    * "MyMachine" is 127.0.0.1 (localhost):
    127.0.0.1 localhost MyMachine
192.168.178.100 MyMachineNet* I assigned the name "MyMachineNet" to the network interface in /etc/hostname.networkcard.
    * I use DHCP
The computer name (in /etc/nodename) is "MyMachine". Some programs (e.g. Gnome !) establish a TCP/IP connection to "MyMachine" instead of "localhost" (I do not understand why). These programs are now satisfied because the host name "MyMachine" represents 127.0.0.1 (localhost).
I know that there is a switch that tells Solaris to take the machine name from DHCP/DNS instead of /etc/nodename. Unfortunately I forgot where it is.

  • Help with memory issue - abap memory vs roll area

    Hi experts,
with our customer we are using TRM and WebDynpro technology to process Tax forms. We have portal integration. Recently due to performance reasons we were forced to analyze memory consumption and actually we are unable to understand what is happening. In memory inspector we can see much higher total memory than for ABAP total.
For Example, running simple application for form bundle search will produce following memory consumptions:
We do not understand why the Total section is + 12 MB when all ABAP code is just 7 MB?
Another example - opening of a form bundle (FB) leads to cca 32 MB consumption (no matter what type of FB we are opening). Visiting all pages of FB leads to 52 MBs (specific FB, this depends on FB type). Again, when we invoke memory inspector a lot of memory is in Roll Area.
This look like roll area is almost always twice as big as the actual ABAP Application.
Please any suggestions what is happening?
May be just the misunderstanding of roll area. To our knowledge roll area is the area of the internal session managed by memory manager (usually mostly created by extended memory). But why is this area so large when the actual application needs half of the space?
Some discussion suggests that this is due many dead objects released when memory inspector is started. But why is this space still available to the application and not put back to the extended pool? Is there any way how to identify those dead objects?
    Thanks a lot

  • Need urgent help with Ifs1.1 on Solaris

We have installed IFS 1.1 with Oracle 8.1.7 on a three tier System (two Suns). We use JWS as WebServer. When we start IFS and JWS everything seems to work fine. But after some time (irregulary) we are not able to contact the JSP-Sites via a bowser. After restarting JWS, everything works fine for some time.
Sometimes it happens (about one times a day), that the whole JWS crashes (JWS-Admin doesn't work). So we have to restart the whole IFS.
What can be the problem? We need urgent help, because the deadline for our project is Wednesday.
    By the way:
Where do I have to start CTX on the IFS- or the Oracle-Side?
    null

Yes, we tried the Oracle HTTP - Server, but we weren4t able to get it to work. We didn4t get our JSP-Files to work with it. But that is another issue. I think it4s not a problem of JWS, but IFS.
Additionally it is strange, that we are still able to connect to the database via SqlPlus.
IFS works fine for about 15 minutes, than it crashes, nothing works anymore. We found following errors in the IfsAgents.log:

  • Need Help with Memory OC to 1066 on P35 Platinum Combo

    Hi,
I've been trying to get my Corsair Dominator memory to 1066, but everytime I change settings, the system will not post. So far I've:
    - Disabled EIST & DOT
    - Disabled 'Configure DRAM Timing by SPD' and set values to 5-5-5-15 (left all others as is)
    - Processor reports 333x9
    - Set ratio to 1:1.6.7 bringing adjusted timings to 1109. I also have 1:1.2 for 1332 & 1:1.50 for 999
    - Memory voltage set to 2.1
Not sure where to go from here as other MS reported here seem to have different settings than the P35 Platinum Combo.
    Specs are:
    - Intel E8400 3.0GHz Dual Core (45nm)
    - MSI P35 Platinum Combo
    - Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MB GDDR4
    - Xigmatek NRP-MC651 650W Modular PSU
    - Corsair Dominator 4GB 1066 DDR2 RAM (PC2 8500)
    - Samsung 22X DVD Burner
    - Lexa Blackline Case
Any advice welcome -- I'm at a loss.
