Help with Moodle on Mac OS X server - PhP issue

I am a server newbie. I am setting up a server on a mac for the primary purpose of running a website for my students to use. I have a hosted site now, but the version of php they offer is not high enough to run moodle. I want to install moodle 2.4 on my mac server (mountain lion) but it needs :PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.33 or Postgres 8.3. I read that I should not try to update the native php (5.3.13) any thoughts or workarounds? I could install an earlier version of moodle, but it is no longer being supported with updates.

First off, ensure that local DNS services are working. If DNS is not working, then various services offered by OS X Server can be flaky. Launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
It's common for folks to skip DNS setup or to reference ISP DNS services, which usually gets them in trouble, and have a much larger project fixing DNS-level errors.
OS X 10.8.4 should have php 5.3.15 and PostgreSQL 9.2.1, the versions of both appear to exceed the Moodle minimum requirements of 5.3.3 and 8.3, respectively. To verify the php version, use the usual "<?php phpinfo() ?>" script. For PostgreSQL, the brute-force command-line version check is "psql --version" command.
Put another way, I'm not sure why you're considering upgrading components — which can be problematic — if you're already running OS X Server 10.8.4 as implied by the footers of your posting.
Have a backup before starting the installation, as mistakes happen and having a backup of the whole disk means a faster recovery and an easier ability to start anew.

is associated to an existing case), the client should have some way to know if the attachments were stripped off and should be able to dlownload the attachments and continue with case resolution.

From your description, you want to achieve the following goal:
Configure Exchange to filter the attachments if the size is over 10 MB and store it in a public folder, and then forward the email to Salesforce.
Based on my knowledge, I'm afraid that it can't be achieved. Exchange can filter messages with attachments, but it couldn't store these attachments on public folder automatically. Also, I don't see any transport rule can do it.

Seeking help with PS Elements 11 which does not work with Epson r2000 printer. Epson tech support could not fix, said it is PS e11 problem. Receive prompt on PS e11 screen when I try to print stating "not compatible or settings are not correct. Have set PS to manage color and printer manages color to off. Sincerely appreciate your help. Running Windows 7 on a Dell XPS420. System has been very stable for years. Before purchasing the Epson r2000, I owned an r1800 which was an excellent printer but after seven years started to exhibit paper feed problems. The r1800 worked with all applications and I was well satisfied with the saturation, contrast, etc. printing mostly 8x10 and 11x17 prints.
Thank you for the information about the # of installs for PS E11, will try uninstall/reinstall this morning.

Need help with Outlook 2013 connecting to Exchange server(2010)

I need help with Outlook 2013 and with my exchange server(2010) email account
After setting up account initially emails come in and than after an hour or two stop. My OWA is working fine with no issues. I have even created a forward rule in OWA to my GMAIL account whch works fine
However Outlook 2013 is not syncing messages, have difficulty in sending emails sometimes as it takes too long. In fact the connection also is intermittent. Even if the task bar shows connected to exchange, it seems that is not the case since new emails
and any emails I compose dont work. I have trouble shot the issue with my ISP and email service provide, but they havent resolved the issue I have also done a TraceRoute and that shows no drops or problems to he exchange server.
Can someone please help me resolve this matter so I can continue to use Outlook 2013( running Windows 8.1) in both my computers which have the identical problem

To answer your questions, please note the following
a) My account is set up in Cache Mode( not online mode)
b) I am the only other user on the account
c) When the connection to the exchange server is broken, I see upon clicking connection tab that there is no information in the box, and when I press reconnect it starts showing "connecting"
d) When the connection to the server is there, it shows connection as "established"
e) Sorry I dont understand th meaning of CAS array in your environment? Can you pls explain
Since yday I have been using Outlook 2010 on desktop and Outlook 2013 on my laptop using Exchange 2013 account. So far all emails are syncing, and I can send emails from both computers. However, I am concerned that the connection can break-off anytime,
as it has done that in the past on both outlook versions. The max time it has worked without any problem is 48 hrs and than after that the same issue of not connection, not syncing and unable to send emails happens
My ISP has checked and there is no network connectivity issues. My email service provider has trouble shot the issue many times, but to no positive results. I have also changed the profile a few times, but the intermittent connectivity problem hasn't
been resolved.
Can you identify the possible causes and more importantly a working permanent solution please

Workaround for remote with Apple TV + Mac Mini media server?

We have to keep unplugging and then replugging our Apple TV 2 any time we want to use our Mac Mini media server instead of the Apple TV on our home entertainment system. Alas, the lack of a power button.
The reason we have to do this is because the remote control signals are identical for the two units; we're using Plex TV on the Mac Mini, and when we use our universal remote, if the Apple TV is on, then unintended things happen in the background on the Apple TV any time we control the Plex media server. Ack. We could end up buying a video that we don't want.
What workarounds are there, to avoid plugging and unplugging the Apple TV, if we want to keep using a remote control with both the Apple TV and with the Mac Mini media server? I understand that plugging and unplugging it is not desireable.
On the other hand, we do shut off power completely to our entire entertainment system, via the power conditioner, when we're not using it, to conserve. I suppose that's equivalent to plugging and unplugging the Apple TV?

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
This should solve your problem.

Please help with opening old mac AE file on a pc

With the latest version of AE on a pc I tried opening older mac version .aep file created I believe in 1999. I had very little hope so I wasn't surprised to see this message:
"After Effects error: this file was created with an older version of After Effects [3.0 (Macintosh PPC)], and can’t be opened. You can convert this file using an older version of After Effect and resaving."
It is not clear which version should be used, Pc or Mac, and if at the end that file could eventually be opened in thet latest AE on a pc.
I will greatly appreciate any help with this.

Rebuilding is not an option. It is a lot of work and I need this as a portfolio item. I created a promotional interactive CD with Macromedia Director in 1999 for a sign company. I created 19 short animations for it with After Effects 3 using old PPC Mac. I haven't used After effects since then but recently several new clients asked me if I can make animations from that nature. So, I'm trying to use my old work as a demonstration of my creative skills. The problem is that the animations were rendered tiny with 309 x 228 pixels to fit in the interactive interface of the presentation intended for the small monitors used at that time. I took the animations from the interactive CD and using the latest AE on a pc, I created a rough composition with running the animations one after another. To make the animations a bit larger I scaled most of them to 320 x 240 hoping it will look better.
In my archives I have the project files and all .ai vector graphics used for the animations. I still have the old PPC Mac retired somewhere in the closets and installer CD with After Effects 3 and 4. I thought it would be great if I can somehow open the files in the latest version on a pc but if not I guess I have to take out that old mac are render to higher resolution using this ancient machine and AE version. And I'm wondering if all this is worth it.
I will appreciate any tips, advices, things to be aware, etc, and how to make this looks better on YouTube.
Oh, and another question by the way, I haven't been current to the animation software for a long time and wonder if this kind of presentational animations are best suited for creating with Flash or After Effects is still OK?

Can you help with a TV / Mac mini configuration?

So.... the plan is to buy a new 32-40 inch TV for the bedroom upstairs. All of my TV cables and Internet stuff are at the basement. I am not planning to bring any cables upstairs (TV or Ethernet) so this is what I am thinking:
- HDTV 32-40 inch
- Powerline to bring network connectivity upstairs
- Slingbox PRO-HD
- Mac mini to use SlingPlayer, Hulu, iTunes, DVD Player etc. etc.
- One of those Air Mice
These are the questions I have:
1) The HDMI on the new Mac mini transfers sound as well as video. Correct? No need for extra adaptor?
2) Can some suggest a good Air Mouse that works well with the new Mac mini?
3) Anything I need to make sure the TV is capable in order to work well with the Mac mini (except of course for the HDMI port)? Resolution? Other ports? Options?
4) Anyone with a similar configuration? Any issues that you might see with this configuration?

I cannot answer any of your other questions, but, yes, the Mid 2010 Mac mini carries both a digital audio and video signal from the HDMI port.

HT3096 Someone please help, I'm a broke a$$ college student who needs help with a power Mac G5

Im considering buying a power mac G5 but only cuz its all i can afford and i got an idea about hooking ut up to my tv but i would want to be able to use a wireless keyboard and traction pad but i did some reserch online and found out i need a airport extreme with 2.0 EDR to enable bluetooth which is a requirement for the wireless keyboard. Where can I find the AirPort Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card? There dosent seem to be any place online that sells it and lets say I do install the airport extreme card and enable wifi on a power Mac G5, will I be able to use a apple wireless keyboard with it? And just a side question, for the age of the computer what OS should I have installed, I'm not to femilliar with apple software, the only apple products I have are old iPods n a 4s. Oh and I would mainly use it for going online, a little bit of vid editing, watching YouTube vids, homework and uploading and listing to music, I would love to wirelessly sync my iPhone to the power Mac wirelessly.

HDTV acting up with late '09 Mac Mini - display prefs at issue

I used my 46" Sharp Aquos successfully with my 2006 Mac Mini before I gave it to my brother last December and got a new Mac Mini. They were connected with an HDMI-DVI cable from one of the TV's HDMI ports via an HDMI-DVI cable to the mini-DVI port through the adapter.
Three times this morning within 20 minutes of turning on the TV the TV has turned itself off (the audible click that occurs when the TV is turned on or off and the two green lights go off). The TV turns itself off in a few seconds.
I contacted a Sharp Aquos person online who gave me a case # and told me to call Sharp on the phone so they could walk me through a factory reset.
When I got Sharp on the phone they asked me what preferences from the manual's chart I had chosen. I told them that it was my understanding that Macs do this automatically. I checked my display prefs and they're "1080p" (the manual's chart has only vertical and horizontal resolutions) and the profile is set to "SHARP HDMI". Are these prefs OK and thus the Mac Mini not at fault in all this?

Help With Binding to 10.6.8 Server

I am new to server and was hoping someone could help me with the following issue:
My Company has about 50 Macs (mostly 10.7) right now. We have a 10.6.8 server that is running Open Directory as a OD Master. Right now, they only authenticate to the server for AFP share access. Every user here has a Workgroup account which is used for AFP only. The machines are not bound to the server. What I would like to do is bind the machines to the server and have the users authenticate to there already created user accounts. I want to keep their home directories local and just have them authenticate to the server (using their already setup accounts used for AFP) This would be for password management and manging preferences as well. I was able to bind a test machine succesfully to the server but was unable to have it login/authenticate to the server using an already created server account from Workgroup Manager. Any advice that would help me transition this would be greatly apprecaited. What are my next steps for making this happen?   Thanks!

This you will need to move or reset permissions for the user. Here is the issue.
You have a local account, mboker on a machine. This account is stored in dslocal and likely has a UID value of 502, as it was the second account created. (This all assumes that your local admin account was the first one created and is UID 501).
mboker has a home folder located at /Users/mboker. And this folder is owned by mboker, but the mboker from the local domain with a UID of 502. This means that the first are owned by UID 502.
Ah, so now the wrinkle. You have created a user named mboker on the server. This user has a UID of 1027 (as an example), has a shortname of mboker and is defined as a mobile account who should have a local home folder called /Users/mboker
So now the problem. When mboker (1027) logs into the machine, he paths into /Users/mboker owned by 502. And thus you have no permissions to do anything.
Aha! This is an easy fix. So first, you need to make the machine forget about UID 502. Now, the obvious way to do this is to use System Preferences > Accounts and remove the local user. But, you get a sheet that asked you how to handle the home folder data (DO NOT DELETE IT). Now if you choose to keep the data, it renames the folder from /Users/mboker to /Users/mboker (Deleted User) - or something similar. If you go this route you then need to change the name and reset permissions. So I tend to do a shortcut.
By the way, if you are a novice at command line, make sure you have a backup of the user data. While this is quick and efficient, if you make a mistake, there is no undo...
1: Log in as the local admin
2: Open Terminal
3: Become root with
     sudo -s
4: Navigate to the local attributes store by using:
     cd /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/
5: Look at what is in this folder with:
     ls -l
6: Near the bottom of the list you should see a file titled mboker.plist. This is your account attributes file. Likely this file is for the local account (user UID 502). Remove this file from the directory system
     mv mboker.plist /Users/Shared/
moved it in there just in case... You can delete it later once you understand the process
7: Restart directory services or just restart the computer.
8: At login window, login as the local admin
9: Reset ownership on the home folder by using this command
     sudo chown -R mboker /Users/mboker
Now, if you investigate before this step and looked at the mboker home folder, you will notice that it is owned by 502, not a user name. That is because we made the machine forget about the local 502 user so it has no name to associate with the account.
10: Log out of the admin account and log into the mobile account using Other initially.

IOS 7 devices do not sync with CalDAV on Mac OS X Server anymore

Just like some Synology users I am facing troubles syncing my iOS 7 devices with my self-hosted calendars (CalDAV). I am using a Mac mini with 10.8.5 Server, a MacBook Pro with 10.8.5, an iPad 3 with iOS 7.0.2 and an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2.
What is (not) happening anymore:
Entering events on my MacBook syncs those with the calendar on my Mac mini server - so far so good. But they are not transferred to my iOS devices. In addition none of the events I am entering or modifying on my iOS devices syncs with my server (and / or my MacBook). Entered events just stay on the device I used.
What is even more strange: a co-worker used his iPad 4 and his iPhone 4s with my calendars without any troubles before updating to iOS 7. After that his iPad 4 shows the account information in iOS settings and the connected calendars in the calendar app. The iPhone 4s just shows the correct account information within iOS settings but not the shared calendars in the calendar app. In addition the verification of his account on my server fails. I triple-checked this, I even re-configured his account but nothing changes.
Zhis is pretty annoying as I am utilizing my calendars very intensively... Does anyone have an idea?

Your answer helped me a lot, at least the synchronisation works again to most degrees (even between 6.x.x and 7.x devices and Lion and Mavericks devices). For some unknown reason it takes quite some time to sync all devices - I think it takes a bit longer than before but I am happy it works again so I won't mourn too much about it.
What still does not work:
sharing calendars does not work (or e-mail invitation) for users that utilize a GMX mail account, calendars can not be shared with their iOS devices...
