  • "Proxy server is refusing connections" error message, fixed with Network Settings but won't save my preferences. Have tried everything!

    I always have to go

  • Amazing trouble with network on two A10-S203 !

I got two Satellite A10-S203. This notebooks are configured to work on Microsoft network (cable network) with workgroup. Have different IP, name, MAC addresses and same workgroup. At network working about 15 computers. When I connect to network one of them its works fine with network. When I replace previous notebook with second it is work fine too. But when I connect both of them at same time to the network I got trouble. One still works, second can only send pockets but can receive any of them. When this two notebooks are connected to network some of other computers sometimes hangs up.
This notebooks work fine sparely but together wont work in same network.
I checked configuration of them hundreds times and it is ok they can see and browse net when are connected separately. Was thinking it is net card MAC addresses conflict but it isnt.
Can anyone help me with that?

If you want Windows XP on your network, you probably want to do it for as little money as possible. After all, whatever else XP is, it's not cheap. You might even be tempted to upgrade your corporate Win9x machines to XP Home so you can work remotely.Don't do it.
I know some network administrators who have already been burned by this. Microsoft hasn't made a big deal of it, but XP Home is crippled for serious server-based corporate networking. For the office, XP Professional is the only XP version to consider.
Unlike all other previous Microsoft operating systems, XP Home will simply not work in an office network environment with NetWare, NT, Samba, or Windows 2000 servers. Period. You simply can't connect to the servers' domains or their file/print services.
Because of this, you also can't use an XP Home laptop at the office. Nor can you use Home for something as simple as retrieving mail from a protected internal e-mail server over a home Internet connection. Home has only minimal virtual private networking (VPN) with Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (P2TP) or Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), which won't work with many VPN engines. Indeed, Microsoft only advertises its P2TP/IPSec VPN stack in XP Professional as a VPN solution.
Even if you did cobble together a way to use Home on a domain-based network--and I'm sure someone will do it; you probably wouldn't want to use such a hack. Besides not working with domains, you can't use domain-based or Active Directory-based network administration tools with XP Home. The OS doesn't even include that basic of network administration: Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) support. Do you really want an administration hole in your network?
XP Home also has a built-in network security problem. It's possible on some unsecured domain networks for an XP Home system to be able to access network resources by using pre-existing network login/passwords without actually logging into the domain. Once there, the system can not only not be administered, any network resources that the XP system can access could be hijacked by anyone networking into the XP Home with its insecure Simple File Sharing. And the latter doesn't include login or password protection for system resources. Now, you might think that Internet Connect Firewall (ICF) protects this vulnerability, but you'd be wrong. With ICF up, you can't share files or printers. For practical purposes, you won't want ICF on unless it's a standalone machine connected to the Internet or playing the part of a pure Net server with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a small peer-to-peer (P2P) network.
XP Home will work in P2P networking with older versions of Windows, but it has significant problems even there. For starters, XP Home will only work with a maximum of five P2P servers; it simply won't work with more than that. XP Professional, on the other hand, will work with up to ten P2P servers. If you have more than that, you need to rethink your network design.
Another problem with Home on an existing P2P network is that if you run the Network Setup Wizard (NSW) on other machines--which the program will probably ask you to do--it will attempt to make the network confirm to XP's defaults, such as the workgroup name "MSHOME," rather than use the existing network defaults. You should also forget about using NetBEUI. Though that protocol is in Home, Microsoft won't support it. TCP/IP is the only real way to go.
As for the rest of setup, it will go far better if you know your network defaults and enter them into XP's Network Setup rather than let the wizard attempt to smooth your path for you. Of course, if you're starting a small P2P network from scratch, NSW will actually make the setup run much more smoothly.
But enough of this, you get the idea. The only way you'll save money in upgrading to XP for your network is to go straight to XP Professional and not waste time on Home; there really is no place for Home at the office

  • Problems with network settings under sys preferences on a macBook 10.4.11

When I try to open my network settings from System Preferences I get a box telling me "Your network settings have been changed by another application". Clicking "OK" does nothing other then popping the box again. To get out I must kill the process.
Login as a different user on the same computer get the same results.
3 years old MacBook 2.0GHz (White) with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Tiger 10.4.11. Computer including network otherwise functions properly .
While I'm at it, my new MacBookPro 13-inch 2.53GHz Snow Leopard 10.6 seems to randomly fail connecting to some mail accounts while at the same time successfully accessing others (using Apple's native Mail) and, simultaneously randomly fail connecting to some web addresses, successfully with others, getting exactly the same results with both Safari and Firefox. At the same time the old MacBook (the one with the network settings problem) is successful with both the mail accounts and the web sites the newer mac fail. I just set the new one two days ago and used Migrations Assistant to transfer my files and settings. The process was anything but smooth and I had to struggle for quite some time to get the thing to work.
Any help will be deeply appreciated...

  • Workaround for remote with Apple TV + Mac Mini media server?

We have to keep unplugging and then replugging our Apple TV 2 any time we want to use our Mac Mini media server instead of the Apple TV on our home entertainment system. Alas, the lack of a power button.
The reason we have to do this is because the remote control signals are identical for the two units; we're using Plex TV on the Mac Mini, and when we use our universal remote, if the Apple TV is on, then unintended things happen in the background on the Apple TV any time we control the Plex media server. Ack. We could end up buying a video that we don't want.
What workarounds are there, to avoid plugging and unplugging the Apple TV, if we want to keep using a remote control with both the Apple TV and with the Mac Mini media server? I understand that plugging and unplugging it is not desireable.
On the other hand, we do shut off power completely to our entire entertainment system, via the power conditioner, when we're not using it, to conserve. I suppose that's equivalent to plugging and unplugging the Apple TV?
    Your thoughts?

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
    This should solve your problem.

  • Trouble with network home directors and keychain

    Hello all,
I have recently started to dabble into Managed Accounts using 10.4.11 server, however I am running into sporadic issues. First of all, Keychain access to users is extremely flaky. All of my users' files are being imported from existing local accounts, so I'm betting that my import procedure has something to do with my problems. Fortunately all of my local accounts have long ago had their uid's changed to mirror the users workgroup UID, so I haven't had to bother with changing permissions on any files. My import process goes like this.
First, I create the users home folder in the Workgroup Manager. Then, I log into the users computer via ARD, take control, connect to the users Home Folder, and copy all of the contents of the users local folder into the Network Home. Once this is done, I apply the correct permissions to the users home folder to ensure that no files may have been overlooked during the import process, and then I log out of the users account, log into the administrator account, and completely delete the users local account. I then add the computer to the Servers managed computer list, add the user as the sole authorized user (other then Administrators of course), restart the computer, and then log in as the workgroup user.
Once this is done, I usually have several issues with the Keychain in authorizing the workgroup user to use the existing keychains. Even after logging back in to the local Administrator account and completely deleting all existing users' keychains, the user has the same issues. To my untrained eyes, some programs have a hard time accessing the proper keychain, or remembering that the keychain has been altered.
The second problem that has only recently cropped up is that some users are loosing the ability to use their keyboard in certain applications. This happened to me maybe once or twice in the last couple of days, but starting today, and in the last 2 hours, has had this happen no less then 10 times. The only program that I have seen this happen to is Microsoft Excel 2004, and it is also the only program that I have had it happen to me on.
This is only happening on users who are using Leopard 10.5.4.
Any help is appreciated. Also, is the macos-x mailing list dead? I haven't seen any posts to it in almost a week...
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi
I’m sorry that the guide is unreliable for you, although it does seem strange that it is. Perhaps there is something fundamentally wrong with the configuration of the AD Server?
Apple have made binding clients to Active Directory relatively simple and easy since 10.4. You had to work a little harder in 10.3. All I can add is successful integration depends almost entirely on how well the AD Server is set up. It might be worth your while to look more closely at that for a solution?
Speaking for myself I have never really had a problem and as far as I can tell all of the installations I have been involved with that required AD-OD integration are still working as desired. Some of them going back 2 years, that’s pretty reliable don’t you think?

Trying to download latest itunes onto my iphone to update my apps, but keep getting this error message
    Network connection timed out
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active
What do I need to do, is this a settings thing? and what should it be

That usually means your security software is interfering, so disable ALL anti-virus, anti-malware & firewalls and try again.

  • Troubles With Network Setup ( 1 modem, 2 routers, 2 LANS, & a home server)

Purchased the AEBS yesterday and have been having a devil of a time setting it up. Here's the network set-up:
Cable ISP -> modem -> Netgear Router (b/g) that belongs to my landlord -> AEBS for my personal (and not shared with the LL) LAN
My big issue is that I can't get more than one wireless connection at a time from the AEBS.
However, I think it's important to ask about the best set up in this situation. For now, I'm interested in getting proper wireless connections for the 20 or so devices that need it (fyi - wired connections currently working). In the very near future (by the weekend) I will be adding a server to the mix (thanks to Amahi) that will be responsible for the DHCP of my LAN.
What is the best way to set the system up so that i can get the wireless i need now while also being able to convert the system with relative ease in the near future?

Hello Stecca. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In your current configuration, your network is still "shared" by your landlord's LAN. You basically have two ways to configure your AEBS: 1) Router Mode: NAT & DHCP enabled, or 2) Bridge Mode: NAT & DHCP disabled.
Regardless of which of these configuration you choose, ALL wired or wireless clients connected to your AEBS would still need to go through the Netgear router for Internet access. In the first option, your AEBS would be configured with a Private IP Address from the Netgear router and provide local clients with a different subnet addressing scheme. With the second option, all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBS would get their IP addressing from the Netgear router.
Typically, when you have two routers in series, the second or downstream router is configured as a bridge.

  • IOS 7 devices do not sync with CalDAV on Mac OS X Server anymore

Just like some Synology users I am facing troubles syncing my iOS 7 devices with my self-hosted calendars (CalDAV). I am using a Mac mini with 10.8.5 Server, a MacBook Pro with 10.8.5, an iPad 3 with iOS 7.0.2 and an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2.
    What is (not) happening anymore:
Entering events on my MacBook syncs those with the calendar on my Mac mini server - so far so good. But they are not transferred to my iOS devices. In addition none of the events I am entering or modifying on my iOS devices syncs with my server (and / or my MacBook). Entered events just stay on the device I used.
What is even more strange: a co-worker used his iPad 4 and his iPhone 4s with my calendars without any troubles before updating to iOS 7. After that his iPad 4 shows the account information in iOS settings and the connected calendars in the calendar app. The iPhone 4s just shows the correct account information within iOS settings but not the shared calendars in the calendar app. In addition the verification of his account on my server fails. I triple-checked this, I even re-configured his account but nothing changes.
Zhis is pretty annoying as I am utilizing my calendars very intensively... Does anyone have an idea?
    J

Well, thank You very very much, Blue Sphere!
Your answer helped me a lot, at least the synchronisation works again to most degrees (even between 6.x.x and 7.x devices and Lion and Mavericks devices). For some unknown reason it takes quite some time to sync all devices - I think it takes a bit longer than before but I am happy it works again so I won't mourn too much about it.
    What still does not work:
sharing calendars does not work (or e-mail invitation) for users that utilize a GMX mail account, calendars can not be shared with their iOS devices...
    Again, Thank You so much!

  • Help with Moodle on Mac OS X server - PhP issue

I am a server newbie.  I am setting up a server on a mac for the primary purpose of running a website for my students to use.  I have a hosted site now, but the version of php they offer is not high enough to run moodle.  I want to install moodle 2.4 on my mac server (mountain lion) but it needs :PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.33 or Postgres 8.3.  I read that I should not try to update the native php (5.3.13)  any thoughts or workarounds?  I could install an earlier version of moodle, but it is no longer being supported with updates.

First off, ensure that local DNS services are working.  If DNS is not working, then various services offered by OS X Server can be flaky.  Launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
It's common for folks to skip DNS setup or to reference ISP DNS services, which usually gets them in trouble, and have a much larger project fixing DNS-level errors.
OS X 10.8.4 should have php 5.3.15 and PostgreSQL 9.2.1, the versions of both appear to exceed the Moodle minimum requirements of 5.3.3 and 8.3, respectively.  To verify the php version, use the usual "<?php phpinfo() ?>" script.  For PostgreSQL, the brute-force command-line version check is "psql --version" command.
Put another way, I'm not sure why you're considering upgrading components — which can be problematic — if you're already running OS X Server 10.8.4 as implied by the footers of your posting.
Have a backup before starting the installation, as mistakes happen and having a backup of the whole disk means a faster recovery and an easier ability to start anew.

  • Trouble with display settings for projector/Reactable

    Hi,
I'm trying to install a musical hardware interface called the Reactable for use with my iMac, and I'm having trouble getting the correct display settings. It's designed to work with laptops and it works fine for the most part with my Apple Hackintosh, but I can't seem to get it working correctly with my iMac. The tech support from the Reactable company recommends that I use 1600x1200 resolution or 1024x768 (native) on the projector, but when I open my display settings I am not presented with either of those options. It only permits me to use 1024x768 and 1024x768 (stretched).
The only instance in which I can get the projection to cover the whole table is with 1024x768, but then the projection is too large. Do I need to change the scaling somehow? How do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Justin

1080p.    If you have a Mac Mini with an HDMI connector, connect direct through there.
Otherwise you'll need to look at either: Which Macs don't have audio over mini-Displayport connectivity, need either an
Apogee DVI To HDMI Converter / SPDIF Optical Toslink+Coaxial Input Output if you have a mini-DVI or DVI (The left connector is DVI, and the right connector is mini-DVI) connector and it is Intel.
    Kanex iAdapt Displayport adaptor if you have a mini-Displayport ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/47/Mini_DisplayPort_on_App le_MacBook.jpg/300px-Mini_DisplayPort_on_Apple_MacBook.jpg
    ) connector.
Note, thunderbolt connectors look the same as mini-Displayport except they have the lightning icon symbol.
PowerPC Mac Minis, need a StarTech DVI2HDMIA connector together with an RCA minijack to red and white splitter cable.

  • Having trouble with bleed settings

    Hello,
I'm trying to make an image a full bleed on an 8.5x11 page. I've got the "Use Document Bleed Settings" checkbox selected in the Bleed and Slug panel of the Marks and Bleeds setting in the PDF export. However, I'm getting this blanking area and then a thin duplication of the image on the verso page. Also, there's a white gutter area. When I deselect the check box, the image seems to look correct on the page. However, I'm concerned that if the checkbox isn't selected, something else might not print properly.
I've also got some images that cross from one page to another. With the box checked, the image doesn't split correctly but there's a small duplication on the other page, suggesting the image won't print up properly. I don't mind that some of the image disappears into the gutter/spine, it's part of the look. But I don't want a white stripe & thin slice or replicated part of the image on the opposing page.
Does anyone have a suggestion of how to handle this properly?
    Thank you!

I'm using ID 8.0.1 in Mac OS 10.9.
I get the white stripe when I place a full image covering the outer edge bleeds and abuting right against the inner edge or spine. But when I put an image across the spine and onto the other page, I get the slightly duplicated image as can be seen in the animal horn.
When I use Salah Fadlabi's suggestion of unchecking "Use Document Bleed Settings" and then changing the "Inside" bleed to 0in while leaving Top, Bottom and Outside to 0.125in, The image looks correct when I look at a 2-up view, it doesn't get split or have the weird white line.
rajsre's suggestion that when the paper is cut, the repeated image with the animal horn will actually look correct. However, I'm not confident how this will play out, as I get the white stripe in the single-page images. I didn't do any special setup like "space between", as I'm not sure where that setting is. Sorry, I'm still learning. When I Export, I'm not doing anything special. I know a little bit of the image will be eaten by the gutter, especially with the images that go across the pages.
My printer (Ingramspark) has this to say about gutter margin:
    • GUTTER MARGIN:
SADDLE STITCH BOOKS: no gutter margin required; items can be taken completely to the bind edge.
PERFECT / CASE LAMINATE / DUST JACKET BOOKS : 0.125" (3 mm) gutter margin (no-ink area) required on the bind side of the interior. These are bound with glue, and the area is designated so it can adhere to all pages (see reference templates for example). Crossover spreads (images/color intended to straddle a spread) may be used as long as the gutter margin is placed in between where the images/color would normally meet.
Blue (Bleed) Area / Overall Document Size
To determine the final bleed size of your page use the following equation:
Final Width = Width of book + 0.125" (3 mm) bleed on trim side. No additional bleed is added to the bind edge. Final Height = Height of book + 0.125" (3 mm) bleed on top + 0.125" (3 mm) bleed on bottom.
    For example a 6x9" (229x152mm) book will have a final interior size of 6.125" (156 mm) wide x 9.25" (235 mm) tall.
If using a background color or image please take those elements to the edge of the bleed area.
    Pink (Safety) Area
A 0.5" (13 mm) margin is recommended inside the trim for color book interiors. For perfect bound and hardcover titles this is in addition to the required 0.125" (3 mm) gutter margin. All headers, footers, page numbers, body text and all non-bleed images need to remain in those margins. Any elements outside of the safety areas are at risk of being trimmed.
So that would suggest I need a non-colored area on the inside edge of the pages, so the inside edge of the PDF pages should have a white stripe. Am I reading this correctly? I've got my page setup to have a gutter of 0.125in. This  white stripe makes sense for the crossover spread, but it doesn't make sense for the image sitting only on one page.
(This paperback book is going to be print perfect bound. I was thinking about making this a hardback book, but I'm looking at cost options - another matter altogether.)
Here's what the overall image looks like in ID:

  • Trouble with Network Solutions mail...

A friend needs to use the Network Solutions (NS) email product for a domain that she is working with.  Unfortunately, we are having a problem with the mail account and Apple Mail.
We are able to set the account up and it seems to be working (no error messages), and we are able to send messages (they send and arrive at other email addresses).
Email messages sent to the account, however, do not appear in Apple Mail -- the inbox is just empty.
They DO appear when we look in NS webmail, so they ARE in the account -- they just don't seem to appear in Mail.
We've tried this on two different Macs and have exactly the same result.  Seems like there is some sort of configuration issue.
    Suggestions?

Has anybody seen this sort of behavior – email simply does no appear in the inbox, no error messages, but mail is visible through webmail interface – with any other service provider?
I haven't tried using the account with POP yet, as a) they claim it works with IMAP and b) I would rather use it that way.  I'm not sure what getting it to work with POP would prove, either, but it might be worth a try, just to see.
    Any thoughts?
