Help with multiclip editing in FCP

Can someone please help me with multiclip editing. I have followed all the steps in the tutorials I have watched but I am unalble to switch between the two angles in the time line. Also the red line in the time line is telling me to render everything first . Is that normal or is it because I am using the 5.0 version of FCP?

To switch between angles, the timeline should not be rendered. Once you render it, it may play more smoothly, but you can't switch.
Also, sometimes you may have trouble switching many HD files, so it might work better to use Media Manager to make lower resolution proxies for your editing, then bringing the full-res files back for your final output. If the computer can't handle the load, it may refuse to do multiclip editing.
Finally, you may need to switch Playhead Sync back to "Open" from time to time. For some reason, the Viewer sometimes switches to "Sync Off".
By the way, your question actually belongs on the Final Cut Studio forum:

    Quite! Never a good idea, even with really old software...

    The program software should install fine (others report using it successfully) but the difficulty has always been registering it. To do this you need to find a program (that often people discard, unfortunately) called ce2kreg.exe and run that. That's where you enter your registration details, and how you get rid of all the noises that CE2000 will put all over your audio otherwise (unless you severely restrict the facilities you can use).
    It used to be the case that if you'd lost the registration program but had the serial numbers, that Adobe would send you a copy of ce2kreg.exe, but somehow I doubt that they'd be willing to do this any more - it was a long time ago now, after all.

  • Troubles multiclip editing in FCP 7

    I am running FCP 7 on a quad mac pro...with stripped raid internal hard drives ...when I go to "multiclip" ntsc 720 x 480 footage 3 streams...I get a "drop frame warning" and when I uncheck the box do not warn again...it allows multiclip editing to work but with NO AUDIO PLAYBACK.
    I have been doing this type of multiclip editing for years in FCP 6 on my older power Mac with no problems. So I tried the same footage on my power mac fcp 6 and it works.
    How do I get FCP 7 to stop shutting of the audio during multiclip editing?

    Make sure that you are playing the sequence, not the viewer. If your audio is not linked to the video clips anymore and you play the viewer, you will not hear the audio.

  • Need help with multiclip

    Not sure what I am doing wrong.  Sometimes multiclip editing works almost perfectly, as it did today  Only dropped out of multiclip mode a couple times, but that may be normal operation after it has deposited a certain number of markers in the timeline.  Most of the time, it is very balky.  Sometimes I have no audio.  Most times though, clicking on a frame deposits a marker, but I don't see the switch--have to be sure and remember which source I chose last.  Often it may start working, but then drops out right away.  I have sometimes been able to fix the problems by restarting the multiclip several times.  Once in a while I have to restart Final Cut or even reboot the system.
    As far as I know all the settings are correct:  Open sync, multiclip playback enabled.  Is there something I am missing?

    What codec is the footage? What drive is it stored on? Connected how?

  • I need help with export settings of FCP project edited HDV 16:9

    Hello All,
    I have searched the forum only to become more confused. I shot and edited my first HD project and am ready to burn it. What are the settings needed by DVDSP for my FCP export?
    FCP 6.0.5
    OSX 10.5.6
    1080i

    Export to 16:9 SD m2v.
    Usually I use self contained with an uncompressed Codec then bring that into Compressor to use Virtual Clusters. Start with a Compressor preset that is 16:9 SD that fits the footage (in other words if the video is 67 minutes, start with the 90 Minutes) and adjust frame filters to resize "better"

  • FCP Novice needs help with video quality and FCP 5!!

    Hi,
    I have a real problme that I cannot seem to fix. I think its because I am doing something really wrong!
    I have a Sony HC42E MiniDV Camcorder which by default records video in full widescreen. I recorded several tapes this way and have now begun trying to edit them in FCP 5.04 (Tiger 10.4.6). Whenever I log and capture my clips they appear to be fuzzzy and unclear on the Mac monitor whilst being totally crisp and sharp on the camcorder viewfinder. I tried capturing using the DV PAL 48Khz Anamorphic Preset which keeps everything the right size (the final output needs to be true widescreen and not with black bars added) but the resulting video on screen is blurry and bitty. I then tried capturing using the DV PAL 720 x 576 normal preset and the video is a little clearer on the screen (for both presets I have chosen lower field dominance) but when I play back it plays back in widescreen on the mac canvas window but at 4:3 on the camera's viewfinder.
    I then assumed that maybe this is just becuase the mac screen (CRT by the way) doesn't use fields. So I exported the sequence as a QT movie using DV PAL 16:9 and used quicktime (OS9 Classic - my compressor has never worked because of the dreaded "unable to connect to baackground process" problem which I've never managed to correct) to convert it to MPEG2. When I import this as an asset into DVD Studio pro 4 and set the track size to 16:9 it comes through at the right aspect ratio. However it looks blurry on screen. Thinking that this will be fine on a TV I burned the disc - inserted it into my DVD player (a good one!) and watched it on my new 32" widescreen TV (a good one!) and the picture qualitty is poor. Its so much blurrier and bittier than the original footage looks when played through the camcorder's viewfinder!
    The final footaage looks like an old VHS recording that's a year or two old!
    Does anyone know how I can capture my footage in FCP with the maximum quality, edit it without quality loss and the export it for DVD again without such significant quality loss whilst all the time keeping it at proper 16:9 widescreen?
    Is there some presets I should be working to?
    I'm tearing my hair out! Help!

    Hi Guys,
    thanx for your replies.
    here's the latest:
    Brian, I followed your instructions and the DVD burned successfully. However the video quality of the dvd when viewed on my TV ('ve tried on all 3 of my tvs now) is still a lot poorer than the quicktime movie that was imported into DVDSP4. When I play the original QT Movie on my Mac CRT monitor it looks a little blurry and grainy because I guess its non interlaced however when viewed on an external Video monitor it looks great - very sharp.
    When I view the burned DVD on my television the picture quality looks like the non interlaced version of the original QT Movie that appeared on my Mac CRT and not the sharp interlaced (lower field) version that appeared on my external video monitor.
    Its almost like taking a sharp jpeg into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur of about 0.3 followed by jepg compression compressing it down to 5% quality!
    I'm totally mystified. Can the conversion to Mpeg2 be removing all interlacing so that you get the less sharp computer monitor look? I just want the video on my final DVDs to be as good as the original source footage! I appreciate that along the way there might be loss of some quality but surely not that much?
    Does this make sense to you guys or am I still doing something very wrong?
    Robert: I have tried setting all manner of drives including a fresh external firewire HD with nothing on it (clean out of the box) but it doesn't seem to help.
    Brian: I tried the no network suggestion a few months back but I'm not sure if I got it right. At the moment I have broadband through an external speedtouch usb modem and am also connected (occasionally although not for the last 3 months) via a crossover cable to my PCs ethernet card. When I last tried the No Network solution I had immense trouble getting my internet to work again! Can you please help me by directing me to the best ay to do this while protecting my internet settings?
    any more help guys would be greatfully appreciated.

  • Video newbie needs help with multicam editing

    Hi all,
    My video editing experience is limited to a few iMovie projects, which you can view on YT (search for TheChampsTube).  For our final gig we did a 3 camera shoot, which was supposed to be produced by the videographer.  But he dropped the ball, and now I have the files - a motley assortment of m2t, mp4, xml and sfk - I'm converting with Handbrake.  My ancient iMac can't run FCP X so that's out. Also, I'm on a low budget, and will probably only need the software for this one project.  Can someone recommend an inexpensive way for me to get this footage assembled? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    You could try this technique.
    Or borrow a friend's Mac that supports FCP X and download the trial.
    Good luck.

  • PLEASE help with 24p editing mixed with 29.97

    Hello--I am a newbie to all of this 24p editing. I shot a zombie movie last summer and have a MESS with the footage. Half was shot in 24p advanced mode on the Panasonic AGDVX100a with a 16:9 anamorphic lens, and half shot at 4:3, 29.97 with a Sony DVX2100.
    I realize I need to "conform all of this footage".
    Can I stay on a 29.97 timeline? I heard that dropping 24p adv footage onto a 29.97 timeline results in a "jittery" picture once output to TV.
    Should I edit on a 24p timeline, and convert the 29.97 footage?
    It seems that when I drop my 24p advanced footage into Premiere (CS4), on a 24p timeline--the fouth frame is identical to the fifth. Does this mean that pulldown removal is not happening correctly? How do I fix this?
    Even if I do figure out how to edit on a 24p timeline, when I do my final render, what should my output file be? should I try a 24p DVD?
    Also...This is an EFFECTS HEAVY film. So I need to do an edit in Premier, then render it and bring it into After Effects, do the effects, and do another render...then I will take that render back into Premier. Will this work? What render setting should I use? How will the pulldown be affected, if at all?
    ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! I have scoured the net, but have not come across the right answers yet...please help!!!!

    Hello orion,
    Your HDR-CX550V records HD as MPEG4 AVC/H.264; and SD as MPEG2-PS. It appears to be an AVCHD camcorder (at least for HD video).
    Storing your +original footage+ could be done at least two ways:
    1 - record to removable flash media and save the Memory Sticks as your originals, as you formerly saved your tapes. (If I did my math correctly, you could fit up to about 6.5 hrs. HD video on a 16GB memory stick depending on the recording mode you select.)
    2 - copy the +entire directory structure+ from the flash media to a hard drive; this is important, you need the entire directory & files from the root folder on down, not just the AVCHD folder or just the .mts files. Test this before committing to it as your archiving method.
    The third way (and what I would probably do myself):
    3 - Log & Transfer into FCE and then archive the resulting QuickTime .mov files to a hard drive. (Admittedly, this is technically not the 'original' footage because it has been transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec; however the quality is excellent and should be almost indistinguishable from the original AVCHD video.)
    If you convert the video files yourself (you mentioned iSkysoft), you need to convert to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec to use the video in FCE.
    FCP can handle 5.1 audio however the state of the art of these camcorders does not lend itself to direct import or conversion from the camcorder. Even the pros need dedicated 5.1 audio hardware. Frankly, 5.1 audio on these consumer camcorders is more a marketing gimmick than something actually useful at present.
    The filenames 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS etc. are assigned by your camcorder and there is nothing you can do to change that. (Although you could rename the QT .mov files after you Log & Transfer from your camcorder).
    - hoping this helps ...

  • Need help with multiclip / grouping

    Hi everyone - I'm brand new to FCP but have used Avid for many years. I'm trying to do something in a short I've inherited from another editor & can't figure out how to do it in FCP.
    In my dailies, there's an A-camera and B-camera for every take. Some also have a C-camera. Every clip has 4 audio tracks. The DP has assured me that I can ignore the 3rd and 4th audio track of the clips; splitting into 4 tracks is just something weird the camera does. The DP thinks the audio that was captured by the mixer's hard drive on set (before sending it to the camera) will be better quality than the audio tracks that are attached to the video clips. So he suggested that I sync up the WAV files to the video clips.
    So - my goal is to have a multiclip for each take that has all 3 cameras, deletes audio tracks 3 and 4, and also includes the WAV file. I can easily set an in-point to sync all of them, but I don't know how to get rid of the audio 3 and 4. Can anyone advise me on how to do this?
    Thanks in advance...

    The short answer is just make your multi-clips and ignore tracks 3/4. Mute those tracks and when you get you edit set you can unlink them from the clips and delete them. You might try and set up the channels in the sequence to strip them off when you place them in, but not sure what will happen if you try this with multi-clips.
    Unless the camera recordings weren't monitored or the mixers output wasn't recored at the camera, there would be no reason why the wav files on a hard disc would be better.
    You could go through the trouble of duplicating the clips loading them in a time line and unlinking audio 3/4 and then dragging those back in the bin and making multi-clips from those but arghhh.

  • New bee looking for applescript help with text edit app

    I have a huge text files (20+) , I want to find a list of words like weather, farmers, ploughing. I want to find these words one at a time, as my text file is 250+ Mb in size.
    I want applescript to count the how many times each word appears in the text.
    Paste that occurrence of word into an spreadsheet file in a row named after text file , and in a column named weather, farmers, ploughing.
    Please help.
    Thanks much.

    PS so far I can open the text files with applescript, that is about the extent of my ability in programing.

    For a file of that size, you would need to use some shell utilities to get decent performance. To count words, the following script breaks up the text into words, then counts the number of times the specified word is found (a dictionary file is used as an example, so the match is equivalent to 'contains'):
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    font-weight: normal;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #DAFFB6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set theFile to "/usr/share/dict/web2" -- a 2.5MB list of words
    set someWords to {¬
    {theWord:"weather", theCount:0}, ¬
    {theWord:"farmers", theCount:0}, ¬
    {theWord:"ploughing", theCount:0}}
    repeat with anItem in someWords
    set aWord to quoted form of theWord of anItem
    try -- break up into individual words, then search and count
    set theCount of anItem to (do shell script "tr -cs '[:alpha:]' " & quoted form of linefeed & " < " & theFile & " | grep -ic " & aWord) as integer
    end try
    end repeat
    someWords
    </pre>

  • Help with Exporting Edited Version of Picture

    With iPhoto I an trying to edit (crop and adjust the color) of photographs. I have tried exporting the photo, but the cropping does not come over. Color changes come fine, but no cropping.
    HELP?!?!?
    Thanks.
    B2

    Cropping takes a few steps. Click Crop, choose a constrain ratio if you want, adjust the crop box to where you want it. Finally, click Crop again to perform the crop. When you click Done or select another photo you should get the message "Saving Changes" (or something to that effect) to let you know it worked.
    Are you doing all of these steps?

  • Need HELP FAST! Edited in FCP, need to burn a DVD of HD footage to SD PAL

    I have tried to read the threads and sort out my problem, but no luck. I really hope someone can help.
    Here's the gist....
    I show up for a rehearsal for an event I have to shoot tomorrow. They asked me to shoot something today. I shot and edited a 10 minute video in HDV, 1080i, using FCP. I now need a PAL DVD that they can play about 10 hours from now. I exported using Compressor (not sure if I specified any type of audio) using mp2v settings for PAL. I can see it in the simulation, but no audio. it will also not let me burn a DVD to even check if the audio is there, saying it doesn't even FIND the video or audio, even though the file size is almost 400MB.
    Any help or feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Power Mac G5 using OS 10.4.11
    DVD Pro Studio 4
    Cheers.... but not here at the moment.

    Put your HDV timeline in a DV sequence.
    Export as a PAL DV (anamorphic 16:9)
    Drop that file in iDVD. The latest version should encode it as 16:9.
    Give to client.
    In the meantime, do some reading on this forum regarding the HDV to DV translation as well as start at the beginning of the DVD Studio Pro manual. There is a lot of useful information contained here and there that you need to master.
    Good luck,

  • Need help with gunshot effect in FCP

    New to FCP and am trying to add a gunshot effect to a short film. Doesn't have to look top notch...just looking for something simple.
    I added a muzzle blast for the shooter from detonationfilms.com, which worked great. When i overlayed the muzzle blast, the background was black. I was able to fix this by using Modify>Composite>Screen.
    Now I'm trying to add the bullet hitting the victim, but all the shots from detonationfilms.com have white backgrounds. For some reason, when I go to Modify>Composite>Screen it doesn't work for white. What I'm I missing? Are there any other websites that have bullet hits with a black background? As I said, I'm not too picky.
    Lastly, I have about a 40 frame shot of the victim collapsing to the ground after being shot. He's wearing a white T-Shirt, which I'd like to stain with blood. Can someone tell me what program would work best for this? I basically think I need to go frame by frame and "paint" the blood on him, but not sure what program is best for this (and simple).
    Thanks! Much appreciated.

    welcome to the family. We're not really here to help you with practical effects and filmmaking tips, we're here to help you with the software. But we'll see who shows up.
    For some reason, when I go to Modify>Composite>Screen it doesn't work for white. What I'm I missing? < </div>
    Screen drops out black pixels. It's not really the best way to get luma key effects but it's quick and easy for high contrast effects footage that is delivered on superblack. Try a luma keyer to key out the white.

    Should have been done as a practical effect while shooting. A simple squib and blood packet would have been FAR easier to deal with than rotoscoping and hand painting. You need After Effects or, if you have Motion, crack the manual and get set for some long sessions. There is nothing simple about handpainting on a moving object.

  • Help with graphic editing

    I think I have gotten myself in over my head. I am using the
    FreeHand software, & I know absolutely NOTHING about graphic
    design or this program. So, I'm hoping that someone with some
    patience can help me out. I have downloaded a vector image & am
    trying to edit it. The picture is of a flower. I basically only
    need to change the background color & to change the overall
    color of the flower. I have no idea where to begin. Any help?
    Thanks!!!

    Even though you have downloaded a vector illustration if it
    was saved as
    an EPS and brought into FH then it may or not be editable at
    that point.
    If it looks and acts like one piece of artwork (cannot
    select
    separate parts of it) and you cannot "Ungroup" it (Select art
    > Edit >
    Ungroup) then you are probably dealing with an EPS that FH
    cannot edit.
    Go to the Object Inspector and see what it says it is at the
    top of
    the panel when the artwork is selected. If it says Group or
    Path or
    Compound Path then you can edit. If it says EPS then you
    can't edit.
    You will need to crack it by using Illustrator or Distilling
    to PDF. If
    you are on a Mac you can open the EPS into the application
    Preview and
    it will make it a PDF. Then save it as a PDF from Preview and
    open in
    FreeHand.
    Good Luck,
