Help with queries

Hi~
I am trying to output information from a database, but I
cannot figure out a way to efficiently write the queries. If anyone
could help, I would appreciate it!
Here are my three tables and the relevant fields:
MENTORS
id
practiceTypeID
practiceArea1ID,
practiceArea2ID,
practiceArea3ID,
practiceArea4ID
**I am sure there is a better way to arrange this than having
4 fields that are essentially the same thing, and I am open to
suggestions!
PRACTICETYPE

In my Access database, I set up relationships (in the
Relationships window) like this:
practiceType.id = mentors.practiceTypeID - One-To-Many
practiceArea.id = mentors.practiceArea1ID - One-To-Many (I
can only figure out how to set up the relationship on the first
"practiceArea()ID" field, because if I add the other 3 fields, it
doesn't work)
I know this is a mess, and there is probably a really simple
way to combine it all into one query, but I'm just not sure where
to start! Any advice would be welcome, thanks!
So, here is what I am trying to do:

It looks like Mentors to PracticeArea is actually a
many-to-many relationship, so you should migrate the practiceareaID
values out to an associative entity (link table) so that you can
resolve the many-to-many relationship. In other words, you could
create something like a Mentor2practiceArea table that has mentorID
and PracticeareaID columna and would have a row for each practice
area linked to a mentor. Then you could link mentor, practice, and
Mentor2practiceArea tables in a query to fine out what practice
areas are associated with a mentor, etc. It is called
normalization, and you should research the subject since it is
obvious that your data model needs it.

Help with queries about boot camp and partition, please.

Hi, I am hoping to partition my HDD. I have done this before, when I first got my macbook but got rid of it, and now I can't fully remember the do's and don'ts' of boot camp. I just need a few questions answered before I take any action.
1. I have a 120GB HDD with about 15GB free space. If I partition the drive will I lose any data on my existing HDD?
2. What is the minimal amount of space I can partition the drive and install Windows?
(I have a copy of Windows XP SP2, and really only need to install it for the use of one program that isn't available on the Apple operating systems.)
3. I tried using Parallels in which Windows took up about 6GB, will it be about the same again? I uninstalled it because I found it to lag a bit.

Maybe you should first get a larger drive; you don't have much more than the minimum 10% free space that Mac OS needs.
Retry with Sun's VirtualBox. Maybe you just need more memory.
Lose data? Step #1: backup.
You may need to backup and erase your hard drive and then restore.
I'd invest in 300GB drive though.

Help with queries in a JSP to MS Access DB

I'm trying to use a JSP to query an MS Access database:
If I create the following query in MS Access it works no problem:
SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE_VACATION WHERE Department="Laboratory";
If I try to duplicate the query in my JSP as shown below:
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE_VACATION WHERE Department = \"Laboratory\"");
I get an exception as follows:
javax.servlet.ServletException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Too few parameters. Expected 1.
What am I doing wrong here?? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi all,
I need a help with these queries, because is happening a strange problem when I try to execute it.
This first query is executed faster than the other one, around 30 minutes faster.
The queries are the same, but there is a single difference, I switch the hard code value '5.93218%' in a like condition by a variable P_COD_RAIZ || '%', because it can't be hard code.

What I want to know is, why the execution time of the second query is greater than the first, if the only difference between it is a variable instead of hard code?

I assume column custcode is also varchar2. Then it looks like a problem with bind values and not evenly distributed data.
When you first run the query with the parameter = '5%' you may get many values and another execution plan as with '5.93218%' on a second run. However the execution plan is saved between the first and second run and not adopted to the new values.
There are ways out of this "bind" problem. But all have to do with providing us a good execution plan first.
However you can start by yourself with forcing the use of the index on the column custcode.

The minimum is about 2MB and the maximum could 20MB. The average

We are using document data only to save changes made
to the application data in a web application. The final save goes
to the relational database. Berkeley XML DB is just used to store
temporary data since going to the relational database for each change
will cause severe performance issues.
17. Please describe the shape of one of your typical documents? Please
do this by sending us a skeleton XML document.
Due to the sensitive nature of the data, I can provide XML schema instead.
18. What is the rate of document insertion/update required or
expected? Are you doing partial node updates (via XmlModify) or
replacing the document?
The document is inserted during user login. Any change made to the application
data grid or other data components gets saved in Berkeley DB. We also have
an automatic save every two minutes. The final save from the application
gets saved in a relational database.
19. What is the query rate required/expected?
Users will not be entering data rapidly. There will be lot of think time
before the users enter/modify data in the web application. This is a pilot
project but when we go live with this application, we will expect 25 users
at the same time.

No to the first two questions.
The web application is an online review of test questions. The users
login and then review the items one by one. The relational database
holds the data in xml. During application load, the application
retrieves the xml and then saves it to bdb. While the user
is making changes to the data in the application, it writes those
changes to bdb. Finally when the user hits the SAVE button, the data
gets saved to the relational database. We also have an automatic save
every two minues, which saves bdb xml data and saves it to relational
database.

Could it be that you simply do not have set up indexes to support your query? If so, you could do some basic testing using the dbxml shell:

I can't remember where the output is explained; my feeling is that "V(...)" means the index is being used (which is good), but that observation may not be accurate. Note that some details in the setVerbose command could differ, as I'm using 2.4.16 while you're using 2.4.13.
Also, take a look at the query plan. You can post it here and some people will be able to diagnose it.

Does anybody know how to get help with this one?

Hello there!
I wanted to get an advice on how to get in touch with the appropriate person at BT that could help with my situation.
I have tried telephone help, complaints by email and unfortunately still waiting for somebody from the customer services to help me out.
I have recently moved home. I contacted BT on 26th June to organise the line transfer to the new address. The date was set for 18th July. I also ordered line rental saver and paid for it over the phone. All went smooth, telephone and broadband was working fine at the new place, but on the 23rd July I was sent an email that "BT is sorry that I am leaving".
I thought it was a mistake, but the lady in the on-line chat said somebody stopped my service. Later she rang and left a message saying that I must have requested to move to another provider. Did not manage to speak to her again, but phoned the help line this time.
There a gentleman was trying to convince me that I called BT and cancelled my service on the 18th July and to him I was not a BT customer anymore. The truth is that I did not request to stop my service, anyway - why would I do that after paying for a year in advance. This has no logic, but because computer says so then he thinks I did it.
He also added that my account is a 'mess'. He then promised that somebody would get in touch to sort it out as my line rental was gone and my phone and internet could go off any minute.
I did not get any help. After that I wrote to them 3 email complaints to request assistance. They called and aknowledge they will help, but 3 weeks down the line nothing was done to explain the situation. Left the messages to the person from email complaints to ring me or email me -never happened.
Last week I got 2 emails welcoming me to BT and outlining the call plans that were diferent from each other and the one I agreed to on the 25th June. When I called help line 2 days ago a lady confirmed on which one I am on, but could not sort out the most annoying thing - the 'final' bill.
I was sent a bill for over 200 pounds due to premature termination of phone and broadband service , which I never ordered. They already took the money this week. My line saver is gone as well. So I am 360 pounds short. I aslo have no access to myBT to monitor my phone activity or make orders.They also did not send any confrimation of the call plan I am currently on.
It is a very annoying situation, because somebody at BT made an error and I am unable to get to anybody that could help. Everytime you call the help line you speak to somebody else and despite me thinking the email complaints would be the way forward they are not. Would appreciate some advice on how to tackle these issues: false accusations from them, inappropriate billing, problem with myBT.

Help with Photoshop Elements 9 Organizer

I need some help with my new Photoshop Elements 9 Organizer.
I have not had previous versions of Photoshop, this was a brand new installation. I had previously used Kodak software which came with my camera to organize and edit pictures.
My PC is approximately 6 years old. I have a 2.2 ghz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. I am running Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.
The software seemed to install just fine. I then imported some pictures from my Kodak folders into the Photoshop Organizer. After importing pictures I then received the following error message:
'Elements 9 Organizer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
If I remove the pictures from the catalog, I no longer get the error message. As soon as I import any pictures, however, I get the error and the software closes. When I reopen the organizer I get the same error after after about 15 seconds
I have tried the following:
uninstalled an re-installed twice
turned off the automatic backup to photoshop.com
I did come across thread 769749 (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/769749) that offered some advice. Based on that, I optimized my catalog (which was empty), repaired my catalog (which was empty). I also created a new catalog and removed the existing (empty) catalog.
All of these efforts have not worked. Each time I try something, as soon as I import any pictures into the catalog, I get 'Elements 9 Organizer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
This is brand new software that I am unable to use.
Adobe, please help.

Answers to following queries would help-
* Are you able to import images into Organizer from folder other than your Kodak folders?
* Is your problem happening for importing from a specific set of folders only?
* Is your problematic folder having any video files in it which you are importing into Organizer?

Help with Parameter Form

Hello, I have a somewhat complicated Report and I am hoping that I can create the Parameter Form in Reports (I would rather not use Forms because I don't know it as well)
Here's my problem:
Right now I have 2 fields that I need help with.
The first one is called "Report Name" and I have it coded to a bind variable that will search for a series of "work units" such as 02% or 03%
This works as coded, the problem comes with the other "Work Unit" field. What I have right now is a LOV that queries for work units that start in either 02 or 03. This variable will narrow down the report findings to the specific work unit selected. What I want is for this list to be dependant on what the user choses for report name.
For example if the user choses ReportName1 the report query finds work units with 02%, but the "work unit" field still displays the list of work units 02% and 03% and the user must know to only chose the certain work units for the specific "Report Name" selected.
If there is a way to somehow have the "Work Unit" field be dependant on the "Report Name" field please give me soem ideas of how to do it.

Help with Login Form (JSP DB Java Beans Session Tracking)

Hi, I need some help with my login form.
The design of my authetication system is as follows.
1. Login.jsp sends login details to validation.jsp.
2. Validation.jsp queries a DB against the parameters received.
3. If the query result is good, I retrieve some information (login id, name, etc.) from the DB and store it into a Java Bean.
4. The bean itself is referenced with the current session.
5. Once all that's done, validation.jsp forwards to main.jsp.
6. As a means to maintain state, I prefer to use url encoding instead of cookies for obvious reasons.I need some help from step 3 onwards please! Some code snippets will do as well!
If you think this approach is not a good practice, pls let me know and advice on better practices!

Help with listener.ora

I'm trying to set up my linux box so someone can telnet in and run a couple of queries in SQL*PLUS. I have th tnsnames.ora file setup correctly - I think. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with listener.ora. I know that this file is used by lsnrctl. Can someone give me some help with this? Thanks.

Help with missing emails

Hello. New to this, so apologies if I'm in the wrong place. I've not been receiving certain emails for quite some time now. One sender is Tesco. The customer services assistant told me there is no reason at their end why I shouldn't be receiving them and I should let BT know as it may be their problem. Noob help with workflow

hi. Noob here.. so forgive my stupidity !!
what I am trying to achieve is this ... trying to get infopath form submission repeating values into a sharepoint library as fields.
So I have managed to get the following fields promoted to sharepoint.
Product - product1;product2;product 3;product 4
Price - £50;£60;£70;£80
Qty - 1;50;10;60
How can I parse these strings and extract the substrings into list fields ? Can I do this with a workflow ?

According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to use the workflow to extract the substrings.
To achieve your scenario, we should first retrieve the data from the InfoPath form.
If your workflow is running on an InfoPath form, you can use the technique described in How to retrieve InfoPath form data in a SharePoint
workflow.
If your workflow is running on a list item or document that is not an InfoPath form, you will have to download the InfoPath form from the library in which it is located, and use XPath expressions to access and modify data in the form. See
Specifying namespaces to use XPath queries in InfoPath for examples.
Then we can use the Utility Actions, such as the
Extract Substring from Index of String to extrach the substrings.

I need help with a query

Hello everyone,
First, some background information. We have in place a table which records status changes on a work order. The orders normally go through each status only once, however they do occasionally reuse status indicators. For example, an order is placed on hold, released from hold, placed back on hold, released again and so on. The sample data provided is an example of an order with data repeating itself. I need some help with writing a query on this table.

Help with BT Vision Box - rebooting every 15-20min...

I need help with this please!! I have been unable to watch TV using the Vision Box since last week as the box is rebooting itself at least every 15 to 20 minutes. It is impossible to record anything as the box drops out and then we cannot watch the shows. I am getting increasingly frustrated as I feel that what I am paying does not reflect the service I am getting from BT.
