Here's a challenge for you.

whats wrong with my ipod- you name it. here's my issue. laptop was stolen.
1) used itunes 7.0 which i wasn't too fond of. now i am using my roomates comp but she only has itunes 6. my ipod will not register on her comp. she is not interested in using 7.0 neither am i.
2) also tried backing up files. the apple instructions were confusing for me and i also am not using 7.0. used ipodsoft. http://www.ipodsoft.com/site/pmwiki.php?n=podplayer.Homepage it extracted 600 songs of my 1400 song library. the remaining files do not work. they won't play in the softplayer and won't play on my itunes. they still show up but when i go to select a song it just skips to the next track
how do i deinstall itunes 7.0 from my actual ipod?
can i/how do i recover these lost songs?
how do i get the rest of my library (the now corrupted files) on to my computer safely? i have heard ephod works well.
as a last resort who would i take my ipod to to get it fixed i really don't want to lose my entire library.
i really appreciate your suggestions and respect the time you put into helping others.
thanks in advance
ps
i am using a pc

It is the upper (or video) line that needs rendering. I cannot remember specifically how I captured, it has been a while, but I distinctly remember that 2/3 capture techniques didn't work (I was running an older version of FCP at the time) and all I would see was the spinning ball.
So I played the tape while in the DVX and captured on the fly.
Still, all the settings were properly configured and I have done it that way in the past. Maybe the easiest thing would be for me to recapture and try again. Please give me the new settings I should use and the correct way for capture to eliminate, or decrease, potential errors.

  • A Challenge For You... (speaker probl

    Greetings all,
    I recently purchased an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro. Installation went smoothly, until I hooked up my recently purchased Logitech z-560 speaker system (4.). The sound is GREAT... as long as you don't mind no sound coming from the right front speaker. I'll run through each of the steps I took while trying to find the problem, and then leave it in the capable minds and hands of the members of this forum - I'm just out of ideas.
    Speaker Setup:
    Speaker/Headphone selection is currently 4/4. Speakers. I have tried this setting synchronized and unsynchronized with the Control Panel, with no change in the problem. (Note: The problem also exists when I set the speakers to 2/2. - right channel plays through the subwoofer)</LI>
    Digital output is currently OFF. There are no digital connections on my system. For now.</LI>
    The Speaker Test window only shows the 4 satellites. The subwoofer is missing from the test window. When I run a speaker test, I get the following results:</LI>
    Left Front - OK</LI>
    Right Front - nothing from the right front speaker, but the test IS PLAYED (barely audible) through the subwoofer (!).</LI>
    Right Rear - OK</LI>
    Left Rear - OK</LI>
    No subwoofer test.</LI>
    Speaker Calibration - same results as above. The raindrop sound effects come through the proper speakers EXCEPT the right front speaker, which instead plays through the subwoofer. The subwoofer itself is missing from the calibration screen.</LI>
    Bass Management - all settings are grayed out.</LI>
    Bass Boost - currently DISABLED. No change in problem when it was enabled.</LI>
    Surround Mixer Settings:
    Basic Settings unchanged. No change in problem when any levels were altered.</LI>
    Advanced: Speaker volumes are all at max. No change in problem when altered.</LI>
    Creative Diagnostics:
    All initial diagnostic tests pass.</LI>
    Speaker tests result the same as mentioned above.</LI>
    THX Setup Console:
    Speakers set to 4/4. analog output.</LI>
    Calibration - same problem, but with an additional hitch... only the 4 satellites show up (no subwoofer) on the speaker test screen, with the Left Channel noise coming through clearly. WHEN I SWITCH to right channel, the message "processing" comes up on the screen, followed by "NA". Switching to the rear speakers works properly. A few other notes:</LI>
    On volume balance adjustment, I have adjustments available for the front left & right and rear left & right speakers. The subwoofer is NOT greyed out, but the box to adjust the subwoofer level is greyed out.</LI>
    Equalizer is currently DISABLED.
    EAX Console:
    Audio Effects are DISABLED. No change in problem when they were enabled.</LI>
    Karaoke is DISABLED. No change in problem when enabled.</LI>
    CMSS 3D is currently DISABLED. No change in problem when enabled, regardless of which setting I used.</LI>
    Note: When testing the speakers, the CMSS 3D setting suddenly disables itself and reenables when the test is complete.</LI>
    Audio Clean-Up is disabled. No change in problem when enabled.</LI>
    Time Scaling is disabled. No change in problem when enabled.</LI>
    Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro setup:
    Card was installed and included drivers installed (5.2.6.402, dated Oct. 2003). Problem appeared. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers (.84.55, May 2005). No change in problem.</LI>
    I did a "clean sweep" uninstallation following the steps provided on this forum, and reinstalled everything. No change in problem.</LI>
    Logitech z-560 (THX-cert.) speaker setup:
    I have tested all of the satellites and subwoofer separately to make sure they all work - they do.</LI>
    Speaker wiring has been double & triple checked. No problems (beyond the one that this post deals with).</LI>
    The subwoofer connects to a control box, which connects to the soundcard via a green & black cable. I have tried altering the cable connections to see what happens during speaker test. This may be totally useless, but here are the results:</LI>
    Green Cable in Line (correct): Front Right speaker plays through subwoofer. Front Left OK.</LI>
    Black Cable in Line 2 (correct): Both speakers work properly.</LI>
    Green Cable in Line 2 (incorrect): Right Rear speaker plays through subwoofer. Left Rear OK.</LI>
    Black Cable in Line (incorrect): Both speakers work properly.</LI>
    M3D (phantom center channel) is disabled. When enabled, no change in problem.</LI>
    Fade settings on control box make no change in problem.</LI>
    Entire speaker system has been taken down and set up again. No change in problem.</LI>
    I have done a pretty thorough search through the forums here at Creative and at Logitech as well, and have found no solution.
    My sound is in your hands. I will place my system configuration info under my signature. Thank you in advance for all of your assistance.

    Hmm, st 4. speakers do not have a dedicated subwoofer channel hence it does not show a subwoofer in the picture, with that said it is odd that the right channel only plays through the subwoofer. It is possible that there may be a jumper problem with the sound card, if there is a jumper area on the sound card that is for front panel headphone and mic connecters (for cases that have them). I'm not sure if audigys have them but I know onboard sound does, anyway there could be a jumper that fell out and could have caused the right channel to stop working to fix that just simply replace the jumper (could be any jumper). One way to tell for sure that its the sound card is to connect some headphones to the back and see if the problem is still there.

  • Here's a question for you!!

    Hi guys... just a quick question really. On my computer, I do alot of DVD Backup's for my personal use (all legal just to point out) .
    Now, this involves different stages for what I want them for...
    1: I might put a DVD in a use Backup Software (this could take a few hours)
    or...
    2: I might put the DVD in and just simply copy the VIDEO_TS folder onto my desktop. Again, this could take about an hour.
    Which ever way I wish to do it, it's gonna take time either way. My question is, does it depend how much time it takes on what computer I have.
    For example: I have a Mini Mac... but would the same process take less time on say an iMac, or a Mac Pro?
    If I was looking at a new computer.. what factors do I need to take in? e.g. RAM? Memory? GHz? Etc...
    Would a new computer make a big difference?
    Cheers guys.
    (I'm looking out to buy a mac pro... will it be a big difference from a mini mac?)

    You could try Toast and then use two internal SuperDrives, or even one internal and 2nd FireWire optical device.
    The G5 and later optical drives use EIDE ATA/100+
    The Mac Pro lets you have 4 or more internal drives quite easily so you aren't copying to and from and interfering with what the system boot drive has to do.
    Anytime you work with a 4GB+ file you are going to see some serious system bandwidth bottlenecks. A fast boot drive, lots of space, and having some other drives, ideally a stripped RAID for data, can beef up bandwidth and I/O somewhat.
    Working on IDE with two optical drives is a bottleneck because both use the same bus and don't share nicely (not concurrent I/O) so the separate FW400 optical is what I use.
    I can be writing to two optical drives; or reading from one and writing to 2nd.
    I do all backups to multiple eSATA and Firewire 400 and 800 drives. Mostly FW800 but also 2-3 eSATA drives. That is 60MB/sec. Not sure how many GB per hour.
    RAID for backup isn't considered as safe obviously, but you can get 1GB copy done in one minute too.
    I only use DVD rarely as needed for backups. End of year. Major file I can't lose. Otherwise, more than two backup sets as a minimum seems fine. And I can take a cheap drive, pull it and replace and have it work years later if needed so far.
    300GB drives are under $70.
    The Mini etc use 2.5" drives which are slower than FW400 and limiting factor. FW800 or SATA would be an improvement. Your internal drive and SuperDrive (on PPC Mini) may have shared the same IDE bus? I think the Mini moved to SATA which helped some.
    Asking the same question in same sub-forum etc usually isn't necessary or 'polite' as it is just 'duplication'.

  • Reflect : challenge for you, help for me

    i use reflect to read info from a .class file, it works well.
    only problem is reflect doesn't know inner class. e.g.
    public clsss TopClass
    class InnerClassBank
    //somethings here
    reflect doesn't know that class InnerClassBank exists inside TopClass (any others are ok: e.g. methods and fields etc.)
    i am sure class InnerClassBank is there inside TopClass.class because i see it from input stream (open file TopClass.class as file stream).
    who knows how to read inner class from a .class file by reflect or other ideas except file stream?

    This works for me:
    // class to test with
    class Outer
        public int field1;
        public int field2;
        class Inner1{}
        class Inner2{}
        void Method1(){}
        void Method2(){}
    // test class
    public class ReflectTest
        public static void main(String[] args)
            try
                Field[] fields=Class.forName("Outer").getDeclaredFields();
                Method[] methods=Class.forName("Outer").getDeclaredMethods();
                Class[] classes=Class.forName("Outer").getDeclaredClasses();
                for(int i=0;i<fields.length;i++)
                    System.out.println(fields.toString());
    for(int i=0;i<methods.length;i++)
    System.out.println(methods[i].toString());
    for(int i=0;i<classes.length;i++)
    System.out.println(classes[i].toString());
    catch(Exception ex)
    ex.printStackTrace();
    output
    public int Outer.field1
    public int Outer.field2
    void Outer.Method1()
    void Outer.Method2()
    class Outer$Inner2
    class Outer$Inner1

  • Ralph... here's another one for you

    I've had this problem where I can talk to Craig, Craig can talk to Joe but I can't talk to Joe.
    I've now fixed it so I can ANSWER an invitation from Joe and chat fine.
    However, if I call HIM, he sees the invite, tries to accept, then basically locks up,
    having to restart iChat completely.
    He's on a wireless router in his home, from a DSL connection.
    I went to his Mac firewall and opened all the 5000 ports, etc. and the 1024 - etc. ports.
    This seemed to make the difference in my being able to accept. I tried turning off his firewall completely and it's still no go.
    I'm still stumped. I talk with everyone I contact, all over the place. What's the problem with this one person?
    Thanks!

    Hi Rick,
    If the ports are open with Port Forwarding or Port Triggering it can be a NAT consistency problem.
    This app will tell you if this is the problem http://bleu.west.spy.net/~dustin/projects/natcheck.xtp
    The solution can be as simple as using UPnP if it is an option on the router or modems.
    This mirror of my site has some options to try various things regarding this
    http://homepage.mac.com/ralphjohnsuk1/skidoo/page15.html#CertainBuddy
    There is a bottom line on this and that is to try a different modem/router.

  • AEBS "Ghost" Router Issue - The Challenge for 2012 (and it's only January)

    Yes, it's a bold statement to claim that I have the biggest issue so far for 2012. Why may you ask? Because I've stumped RCN (ISP), Access Media 3 (ISP), Apple Tech Support, and Cisco Tech Support. Here's the challenge for you to see if you can figure it out:
    ***Also, sorry for the long-winded post. I've spend over 20 hours on this issue and racked up a lot of info to share with you. So please bear with me***
    I used to own a Linksys E4200 router (early 2011), which I set up using the wireless network name (for example) "wifi-box". Due to performance issues, I returned the router back to Linksys in April 2011. Shortly thereafter, I purchased a used AESB. I performed a factory reset (not a hard reset, as I know the difference between the two) before setting up my network. Things worked great from April to Dec. 2011.
    On Jan. 1st, 2012, the building that I live in switched ISPs. I used to have RCN, and now have Access Media 3 (AM3). Both provide the same type of connection - cable - and both provided me with a modem (not sure the model of the one that RCN provided to me, but AM3 gave me a Surfboard 5101N...shudder). Once the transition from RCN to AM3 took place, I performed another factory reset on the AESB before setting up my my network from scratch.
    Now, here's where things get start to get weird. I "Created a wireless network" on my AESB, entered in the name "wifi-box" (to keep it the same as before) as the wireless network name, and followed the rest of the steps until I updated the router. Shortly after the AESB restarted, I received a "Dual (or double) NAT" error right off the bat. Looking into the issue futher, there were now 2 wireless network names called "wifi-box"?!? Huh?!? The actual name isn't "wifi-box", but was something quite unique. So it was easy to tell that it was (once) my wireless name.
    The next 5 hours were a blur of reconfiguing, resetting, unplugging, etc. anything that is connected to my network. Nothing worked. During all of this, I also switched the name of the AESB to (for example) "apple-wifi".
    As a last resort, I unplugged everything - the Surfboard, the AESB, wiped all Airport Util profiles off my 2 Macs, wiped my profile off my 1 PC, shut them down, did the same for my iPhone 3G, shut off the power strip that the modem and AESB were connected to, and unscrewed the coax cable from the wall. I had a friend come over with his laptop, which he never brought over before, and had him search for a wifi signal. As you would guess, "apple-wifi" didn't appear...BUT "WIFI-BOX" WAS AVAILABLE TO CONNECT TO!!! Arrrgggg!!
    At this point it seems that the profile is somewhere outside of my condo. But where???
    Moving along, I used a tool called WiFi Stumbler to see if that could help shed some light on my issue. What I found was unheard of. The wirless name "wifi-box" was linked to a Linksys router.  Once I discovered this, I logged into my Linksys profile (192.168.1.1) to see if it still worked. IT DID!!! However, that was short lived, because as soon as I clicked on a tab, I was booted out. On top of that, I couldn't log back in. Not sure if this is because it was looking for the Linksys router or not. Whatever the reason...it's just flat out weird.
    Because the password to log into my old Linksys profile was the same, it somewhat leads me to believe that someone doesn't have the same wireless name that I do.
    Over the past two days, I talked to RCN, Linksys, Apple Tech, AM3, had an AM3 tech out to look at it...no one knew what the issue was. When I talked to Apple, and they thought it might be the Surfboard. The tech said that the Surfboard is also a router, which is why the "dual NAT" error is taking place. However, I then spoke to AM3 and they told me the Surfboard was only a modem. I looked it up online, and it's just modem. Also, I was able to get rid of the "dual NAT" error, but yet I still cannot connect.
    My current error msg is: "Airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.XXX.XXX.XXX and will not be able to connect to the Internet". The AirPort indicator light in my Network Preferences is orange, but the AESB indicator light is green (and is reporting no issues).
    To end this, (if you're still reading), any help that you may have is greatly appreciated. Everyone I spoke to is stumped. I'm not sure where to go next from here. If you know anything, please let my know . As a quick recap, here are my current settings:
    Devices:
         1) MacBook Pro (2011), OSX Lion;
         2) MacBook (2009), OSX Snow Leopard;
         3) IBM Lenovo PC, Win XP SP2
         4) iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2)
    Modem:
         Former modem: unknown
         Current router: Surfboard SB5101N
    Router:
         Former router: Linksys E4200 (wireless network name "wifi-box")
         Current router: AESB - Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station - Simultaneous Dual-Band MC340LL/A (wireless network name "apple-wifi")
         # of Router in my condo: 1
    ISP:
         Former ISP: RCN
         Current ISP: Access Media 3
    Thanks and good luck (to you and me)

    Thanks Tessarax,
    Thanks for the reply, and no worries about the long form answer. Yesterday, I went through your process twice (for good measure). I also unplugged/shut down everything overnight and tried it once again today. Unfortunately, the results are the same.
    Me network is currently up and running, albeit a limited connection. It's still producing the "Double NAT" error. My Internet is set up as follows:
    These are the settings for "apple-wifi" in the AirPort Util.:
    Connect Using: Ethernet
    Ethernet WAN: Automatic
    Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address. ("Bridge Mode" and Distribute a range of IP addresses" cause additional errors which brings down the network. These errors include setting a DHCP beginning/ending address and no Internet connection. I tried setting the DHCP beginning/ending address several times, but the AEBS never accepts my entries.)
    IP: 10.XXX.XXX.XXX
    DHCP: Beginning/Ending Address: 172.XXX.XXX.XXX
    DNS: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
    These are the settings for "wifi-box" in the Network Preferences:
    IP: 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
    DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
    Search Domains: 221am3.com
    802.1X: No profiles (I deleted them)
    Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: *.local, 169.XXX/XX
    Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV): checked
    MAC Address: same as "apple-wifi"
    These are the settings for "apple-wifi" in the Network Preferences:
    IP: 172.XXX.XXX.XXX
    DNS Servers: 172.XXX.XXX.XXX
    Search Domains: 221am3.com
    802.1X: No profiles (no profiles were avaible for "apple-wifi")
    Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: *.local, 169.XXX/XX
    Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV): checked
    MAC Address: same as "wifi-box"
    Two new discoveries that I uncovered yesterday are as follows:
    1. 802.1X (under Network Preferences): There were 3 profiles that I deleted from this tab last week. After resetting the network, they came back. Whether they were present or deleted, it didn't affect the connectivity of my network. Just mentioning that these profiles came back after deletion (I deleted them again).
    2. Yesterday, the network in my building went down for a few hours. I noticed that neither "wifi-box" nor "apple-wifi" were available to connect to. This is an obvious insight, but it seems that when "wifi-box" is unavailable, "apple-wifi" is unavailable as well. However, 'wifi-box' has always been available even when "apple-wifi" is down. Sounds like my Internet signal follows this path:
    AM3 > Condo building > "wifi-box" > my condo > Surfboard modem > AEBS "apple-wifi" > my devices (laptops, iPhone, Xbox, etc.)
    Two new questions:
    1. What is DHCP Client ID and is this something that I need to provide?
    2. Could the cables that I'm using cause any problems? Here's the cable that I'm using and the connections between the devices:
    CAT5: Router > AEBS
    CAT5e: AEBS > MacBook Pro
    CAT6: AEBS > Xbox
    If there's other questions or infer that you need, please ask

    Nokia at their best again. Nokia support is abysmal and in many cases non-existent. Take for example a level 2 tech telling me to do a 3 finger reset which then wiped all my Web Video Widgets - which Nokia can't supply - and removed Qt from the phone so I can no longer install or use Ovi Store - which they, too, can't supply.
    As to this being a bug with Gmail they are talking nonsense. I have my E71 sitting alongside my N8 and the E71 has always worked flawlessly with Mail for Exchange on my old phone, even my N95. On the other hand, N8 crashes when you reply to emails using MfE and Imap doesn't support push mail. They released this phone without thorough testing to stem the flow of negativity and to please their shareholders. They forgot about the most important link in this chain - us. Without us the company will not last. Period.

  • You didn't ask us, but here's our suggestions for a new 7" tablet...

    1.  Keep the AMOLED screen and current screen size.  It's probably why it's so darned expensive, but worth it.  I'm an apple iPad fanatic, but the at275's screen elicits the same reaction from me and all my iOS toting bretheren:  "Whoa."
    2.  Keep the micro sd card.
    3.  Lower the price while keeping the features.   Great tablet, but a $500 for a starting price when the iPad mini begins at $320 and the Nexus 7 is $199 guarantees you're at best a niche product, and at worst DOA.
    4.  Lose the existing charge connection.  What a large, ugly 1990's chunk of equipment the charger is.  There is no reason to not go to micro sd charging.  Maybe find a way to put hdmi out with the space you're saving on it.    And don't get me started on your dock pricing and availability.
    5.  Better cameras and an unlocked bootloader would help.
    6.  Fire your existing marketing department, assuming you have one.  I didn't hear squat about this tablet until a couple of weeks ago, but was fully aware of the nexus 7.  Quit depending on reviewers and users to do your work for you.  The at275 has some really great features, but it doesn't matter if no one knows about them.  Ever hear about this thing called advertising?  I'd point you in the direction of the Samsung Galaxy commercials that were released at the same time as the iPhone 5.  The last quarter of 2012 would have been a great time to take a few potshots at the iPad mini:  have a Justin Long lookalike walking dejected out of the Apple store empty handed while a hot, nerdy,  t-mobile girl clone tells him about the better screen, more processors, file management and SD card capability of the at275.  Poke fun at the things about Apple that annoy most of us.  Print ads featuring the excite 7 and the iPad mini with the caption, "Congratulations, Apple.  You almost caught up with us!"
    Good luck with your next round of devices, Toshiba.  But if you don't follow the first two suggestions, I won't hold a grudge since I'll still have my at275; I'll just hold onto my wallet.

    Schelske,
    At a couple ad agencies I used to work, I was the "computer geek." I've used Retrospect at all of them because I didn't have time to try back-up programs before buying one. I knew of Retrospect's reputation so I always recomended it to the owners. At one agency, we backed up to a tape drive. At another, we backed up to a Firewire drive. At another, we backed up to a server (a Windows server...the owner was hoodwinked).
    Now that I'm on my own, I back up to a peer-to-peer-connected G4's internal HD. I've never had a problem with Retrospect. I've always used the "Desktop" version; I saw no need to use the "Server" version even with our Windows server (it took a little more finagling, but I got it to work). It takes a little while to set up because you have to install a client on each computer (about a 30-second job on each one), but after that it takes, I would say, less than an hour to configure it...as long as you know what you're doing. I also never had any problems with their support department. They even walked me through a serial number problem I had.
    To make a long story even longer, I would definitely recommend Retrospect. It costs a little less than $100, including back-up for one main computer and three clients, and you can buy additional clients fairly inexpensively. The "Workgroup" version is about $350 and includes one server and 20 clients.
    No, I don't work for Dantz or get any kickbacks. I'm just a working stiff (www.ljsquared.com) who likes to work, not have to reconfigure my back-up system every week.
    Good luck. I'm sure the other suggestions here will work, too, but I've had nothing but positive experiences using Retrospect.

  • Here's a different one for you...

    I have an original iphone which i have had very little, if any problems. I updated to the 2.0.2 software that came out recently and everything was once again going fine. Here's where it gets interesting.
    Two days ago, the bottom row of icons (phone, mail, safari, ipod) stopped responding. All of the other icons on both screen pages work fine. The "slide to unlock" works fine. I have noticed when I go to settings, the bottom icon doesn't respond in any screen either. Luckily, I can still use the phone through contacts and can still receive calls, but with no luck using the "end call" button.
    I've read several of the posts in these discussions and have tried the reset, hard reset, restore, reinstall of 2.0.2. I know I'm not crazy, these icons don't work! Anyone out there ever had this happen or have any suggestions?

    I would suggest an appointment at the Genius Bar and see what they can do for you.

  • Siri says "I'm not permitted to do that for you." When I ask her to call someone

    When I ask Siri to call someone she says "I'm not permitted to do that for you." Hard reboot doesn't help and I can't locate any settings that might affect this. Any ideas?

    If you have update to the NEW iOS6 and the FaceTime feature is switched "OFF" Siri will NOT make external calls and will say " I'm not permitted to do that" So all you have to do is switch the FaceTime feature "ON" and leave it like that for you to be able to give a voice command to it perform the task of making calls.
    GoTo: Settings > General > Restrictions > Flip FaceTime to “ON/OFF

  • Say good-bye to pirated computer games. Reasons for you to buy generic games!

    Found this article!
    It is totally true. So many benefits of generic games!!
    Please check its source here for more picture reference:
    http://happylifegreen.blogspot.tw/2015/01/say-good-bye-to-pirated-computer-games.html
    IT IS CHEAPER
    One of major reasons for most people installing pirated games is because they want to save money. However, they are wrong! If they play it wisely, purchasing generic games can be much cheaper!
    Thanks to this digital era; nowadays you can buy and download almost all games from internet. There are several major gaming platforms. Biggest ones are Steam, Uplay, and Origin.
    Steam is the biggest digital platform which houses thousands of games in more than 237 countries and in 21 different languages. Uplay started with Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed series and now expands to a much wider range of games. Origin, on the other hand, is (currently) purely for EA games.
    You can literally find so many game discounts EVERYDAY on these game platforms. Moreover, every now and then, they have big sales as well. For example, last month Steam had its holiday big sales which had more than 5554 games on sale!
    It is common to see many, many 90% off, 75% off, 60% off… You need to be very self-constrained before you put too many games in your Shopping Cart! Haha!
    Another good thing is that games in digital format do drop in prices.
    In Steam, it is common that after a couple of months of its launch, a game will start to have discount, and then it will drop in prices. For example, when Thief was first launched in 2014, the price was US$59.99. But if you check it on Steam, its price now already dropped to US$29.99.
    If you go to a retail shop and want to buy a box version of this game, the price will probably still be close to US$59.99.
    On the other hand, if you buy pirated games. It could cost more.
    Pirated games usually charges by number of DVDs, and one DVD costs around US$3.
    Because of nice visual graphic, it is common to see games exceed 15GB—which will requires roughly 3 DVDs or more. One DVD cost $3; in another word, you need to pay $9 for one game.
    Some games, for example, The Evil Within, requires more than 38.6GB of disk space. It will need, I’m not sure, maybe more than 8 DVDs? Which means US$24??
    What I usually do is to add games in Wish List. When the game is on sales, Steam will send me email, and I will be able to track if I am satisfied with the discount percentage or not. Easy!
    IT IS SAFE WITH NO VIRUS
    This is easy. No one will argue that almost all, if not all, pirated games (or software) have malware hidden inside! There is no free meal. If you want to save money, you need to trade in something else.
    I am not sure how those virus will do to me, but I don’t want it secretly downloading some funny stuff from internet, and definitely I don’t want my credit card or other personal info be stolen!
    YOU CAN CLOUD-SYNC GAME PROGRESS
    Many games support cloud sync, meaning that you can go to any computer and start a game from where it left.
    It is quite convenient. I have two laptops for home and office. When I go to a business trip, I can still continue my games from my work laptop.
    In Steam, if you see a small cloud icon in front of games, it mean that the game supports cloud sync. The function works quite well!
    ENJOY TEAM WORK AND DLC
    If you play pirated Battlefield 4 or Titanfall (and many others), say good-bye to team mode~
    Quite a number of games—especially EA games— require you to connect to game server via internet in order to play in multiplayer mode.
    If you want to play with friends or want to challenge other games, buy generic games!
    Many games have DLC packs which allow you to equip with different weapons, outfit, or special items. Sometime, pre-purchased games give you these for free.
    Well, no such benefits in pirated versions.
    EASY INSTALL AND UPDATE
    How to install a game? You just need to click a “DOWNLOAD” button and then worry free. After installed, the game will update automatically; so you will always have the latest version of the game.
    HAVE A SENSE OF FULFILLMENT
    Currently I have more than 140 games in Steam and many others in Uplay and Origin. I have quite a sense of fulfillment to see all those game icons in one place.
    GAMES WILL NEVER LOST
    Years ago when there is no those digital platforms, you need to keep your game DVDs (or VCDs) well. Once lost, then bye-bye to the game. The same applies to pirated games that cannot comply with game platform.
    If you own generic games, you will never lose them! You can change as many computers as you like; you can un-install games; you can buy-it-and-forget-it; you can keep games for generation for your grand-children. Those games will always be there waiting for you.
    Once you want to put your hands on the games again, you just need to click “DOWNLOAD” button, and the game will alive once again!

    So long, and thanks for contributing, in your way.

  • A challenge - for me anyhow

    Here is a challenge. I am attempting to create staff meetings that are interesting. I would like to have a ‘Jeopardy‘ type game created on keynote.
    I take the first slide and add text boxes to look like the Jeopardy game board.
    I hyperlink the text box to a slide with the question.
    I then hyperlink the question back to the original slide, to allow for another question to be asked.
    Difficulty I am having is in having asked questions fade off the game board or somehow become marked that they are already played.
    Every time I go back to the original slide, it is original. I need the text box to change as it hyperlinks.
    Is what I am trying to do possible, or am I dreaming?

    DFB,
    You might want to explore RealStudio (http://www.realsoftware.com/realbasic/hobbyists.php) or similar VB development platforms.
    A very nice Sudoku game available free here (http://www.madoverlord.com/projects/sudoku.t) was done with the Real software suite and may give you some ideas.

  • A useful story for you, will hope

    Today I upgraded to CS6, both Design/Web Premium and Audition.
    After really being attracted, and thinking a lot about it, I didn't do so via Creative Cloud. I think you might like to consider why, and things that can be good to do about it.
    I'm a long-time customer and adept with the tools, but it's important to know that what I do with them is to the side rather than in the center of my endeavors. In that, I suspect I'm like very many of your customers besides those directly in design shops.
    Probably many of us have also been the every-other-release updaters, which rather than 'avoiding paying up' put our income stream for you in a balance with value received. I might add that I've been an consultant executive starting new media business within a big name, and fully understand the draw that subscription business models can have, if you can subtly choose and thus successfully manage them.
    Here are the deepest problems Creative Cloud showed to me at present:
    Apart from the first year offer, Creative Cloud would be more expensive to me. Yes, you added the extra apps, but not in proportion to their use value for me. Maybe the 'new apps' really will help me keep up with things like eBook and Html5 developments successfully, but that's an open question, isn't it, given history?
    Once on this gravy train of subscription to you, I would be committed_forever_ to keep paying, if you look at your offer practically, and with the idea of needing to use the tools. That is not something my gut would let me do. Paths can change, and particularly will on the mature side of the ledger and with the kinds of creative things those of our weight can very usefully offer, which often need to be done on a stringent budget until they can flower.
    Tools. The very point in having tools is that they are there when you need them to be, both in moments where learning takes place, and in intervals of creating deliverables. That's an emotional matter, surely, and you should know strongly at the heart of any purchase of the kinds of things you make, especially by individuals or individual decision-makers, who in principle I am going to presume are in fact a significant proportion of your buyers.
    What can you do about this? And maximize your profits?
    Primarily, I think you should modify the Creative Cloud exit terms. Instead of reverting to whatever products we had going in, which would then be obsolete, we should revert to the recent version of those products. Thus if I had come in at CS5.5 Design Premium, I might exit when CS8 was current, and in my CC use: that CS8, now stand-alone, is what I should go forward licensed to use. Now my investment is covered, and you get all the subscription business you can receive from me, while keeping the incentives to keep me going forward, whether CC or standard licensed. I now would be free to be in or out as suited my own situation -- an immense and proper comfort.
    I also feel it would do very much for Adobe customers in daily use and in their perceptions that you use the relaxation a more committed revenue stream gives you to fully share any application fixes and upgrades as soon as they are ready. It should be a privilege of all who support you, not just those who can reasonably choose to do it in the subscription way. What's begun in a much better sharing by certain courageous managers on the forums would blossom, with the turnaround on fixes and improvements available most fairly.
    Can you improve the way the rates work? An elephant in the room is surely that you can always raise the rate charged. But also, there can be times surely for many where the rates just go over what the current use of the subscription will bear. I would think there's a place for the 29.95 rate to be always available, below a certain time-percentage use level per month of the tools. Now you have something a customer can stick with -- through life changes, illness, investment in new venue, and so forth. You also have an entry available for all those who need to learn them, your future customers, and I don't have to mention what alternative method enough of them use when you don't have this. So, a flat rate, for maintenance and for the new?
    Let me return to the thought of tools. A person's paintbrushes ought to be always there; we don't rent them, even if in some production of art we may pay for materials including brushes at a stream. Inspiration asks that those brushes be there every time needed, to express what may become value (which will be shared with you), even or especially when we are not in such a stream. Especially in a picture like this, a satisfied and secure customer is a much better customer, don't you think?
    The short of it is, subscriptions give Adobe a kind of security. Any but the most corporate of your customers need their own security in return. By improving the terms of the Creative Cloud, you will improve our ability to support you in it. Removing the threat of what happens when circumstances indicate we leave,and during periods it doesn't make individual sense to participate, would create the real virtuous circle here.
    Thanks for considering this, as well as you've considered some other things and made appropriate changes, which we notice in recent times. Appreciated.

    Better exit strategy? Agreed. I get the impression that Adobe's still mulling that one over and we may see more mutually beneficial terms emerge in future.
    Don't know that anyone other than Adobe is happy with the current all-or-nothing terms.
    Mid-cycle feature updates for perpetual customers? Won't happen other than the 0.5 releases (wonder how much longer they'll be around?). That's one of the UPSes (Unique Selling Propositions) of the Cloud.
    Clearly, Adobe eventually wants to deliver all its software via subscription. They are going in the same direction as mobile (cell) phone carriers and utilities (gas/water/electricity) providers.
    2010/2011's subscription model offered little value to most and got a muted response. The 2012/2013 Cloud model is much closer to the mark and the adoption rate is much higher but still being tweaked (e.g. Lightroom just arrived).
    The Cloud's value obviously tempts you (so you're obviously on the fringe of the target market)- but not quite enough yet to sign up. I'm sure the balance will tip soon and tempt you again.
    I'm sure the Cloud offerings will improve over time.
