Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:

Two year old laptop has performed well to date... Two days ago, I watched a movie, and then shut down the laptop. It really depends on the circumstances. If you haven't powered your phone off yourself for quite some time, sometimes kinks can just happen and this sounds like one of them. Every so often on mine I will have to use this method but it is in the very minority of occasions. -

Assuming that the battery isn't empty (it can take up to 10 or 15 minutes charging before it responds) then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
