I just received the error message "Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The required disk cannot be found". When I try to sync my iPhone or iPad to iTunes. Anybody have any ideas? The sync worked yesterday.
I'm having the same problem. I just bought an album from my iPhone and when I select "Transfer purchases", I get the same message.

ITunes alert says that the required disk cannot be found when trying to import a CD.
I've purchased three new CD's, when I try to import them into my iTunes using the standard promt of AAC Encoder I get the following error message
Error Occurred while converting the file The required disk cannot be found.
Any advice? This can occasionally happen, if iTunes cannot find your iTunes library. Do you keep your iTunes library on an external drive? Then check, if this drive is properly mounted. Does it appear on your desktop?
Sometimes simply rebooting will resolve problems with a drive that is not accessible. Also, check the settings for the location of your iTunes Media folder in the iTunes Preferences > Advanced panel: -

what do you do if a message comes up saing required disk cannot be found
This error is generally from times when the iTunes library or parts of it are located on an external drive and that drive is not connected.
This question was just addressed a couple of days ago and answered. You might want to try and search in the upper right corner of the screen here, or try the "More Like This" section to the right here. I cannot search from where I am right now or I would look for you. -
I don't know what is going on, I have tried this with several movies as we got a few for Christmas and I keep getting the same error message- I will admit that my MAC is a couple of years old, so I wonder if it is a hardware problem with my disk drive- the error message has a smaller type message saying to check the DVD for dirt or damage and try it again, but the disks are all brand new with nothing on them at all- I have already experienced trying to get a digital copy when it has expired (stupid movie companies) and they wouldnt' let me redeem it, I worry that I will have the same problem if I wait too long to get these movies...

Seems also that the majority of CD's that have these problems are Warner Music published (I have roughly 20 that display the same problem)
Windows and iTunes 10.
Had this problem "Error importing file .... songname .... iTunes cannot locate the required file" when trying to import a CD today.
My library is on an external USB hard drive. iTunes from time to time not only loses its own library file, but also confuses windows into thinking that the library files do not exist.
So the fix where you re-tell iTunes where to find its own media file (using the preferences menu hidden behind some opaque icon for reasons that pass rational understanding) fails, and when you try to find the file using windows explorer, windows possibly confused by apple "helper" files, or possibly lost in a delusion of its own, also thinks there are no files in the music directory. This despite usage stats on the disk still clearly showing that a lot of space is being used up by files that "aren't there".
The fix for this windows user is close everything down. Reboot, restart iTunes and presto it as if iTunes's / Window's temporary amnesia never happened.
Last time I "lost" the library was when I did the "upgrade" to iTunes 10. I wrongly put this down to a pathetic upgrade utility. I now realise that iTunes/Windows just loses this key element of the plot from time to time, screwing up windows when it does so.
Astonished how flaky this widely used and let's face it hardly brand new software combination is.
Now I don't know if this spectacularly unhelpful performance is Apple's fault or Microsoft's or both, so I'm not going to bother apportioning my contempt. Shame on both your houses for needless worry that I'd have to re-rate and re-sort everything from a virgin set of file back ups yet again. -
can you help with this question
Thanks for responding but I had already done all before posting my question andI was all up to date and it still said what it said. I have a feeling it is a disk problem, sometjing in my hard drive and I may need a new computer as this one is almost 5 years old and I have had other issues similar to this where a missing disk need to be located and I have had to refragment the computer twice in the past year. I am open to any other suggestions

I cannot get past this error. This is the third time I am having this issue with iTunes. I have moved my library off of the systems hard drive onto an external as advised by an Apple Store rep, and now I am back to this. What have some of you done to avoid this error?
== Error -54 ==
From an OS9 reference, error -54 is a software lock on a file or a permissions error. (Some of the old codes still apply to OSX although there is no formal list of OSX error codes.)
First, try simply restarting your computer.
iTunes Library cannot be saved (Error -54) - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1912814
Unknown error (-54) while syncing ipod - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1082953 - problem was locked files
Why does iTunes keep showing a -54 error when I sync my iPad? - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3727114
Error -54 possibly related to Touch Copy - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3727114 - cleared by deleting preferences on iPad. -
HELP! I updated to 5.1 and the phone froze.
After restore, it gives the error message above. It will start a sync, then interrupt and stop... and start and stop.
I've tried rebooting the iMAC when the iphone is ejected from itunes. No help.
The iphone has never gotten past the apple insignia since the update to 5.1.
Any ideas very welcome..Try to Reset your device. It might help and is very simple to do.
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears (ignore the Slide to Power Off option that shows up first). -
Is there anything I can do to fix these error messages?
Ok, i have restarted my dad's iphone and the same error keeps coming up, i still can't complete a full sync, as mentioned above, because of the error

I tried to sync my Macbook Pro photos in iPhoto with my iPod Touch. I have done this numerous times, but today I got an error message saying the required file cannot be found. At the same time all of my photos on my iPod vanished. Can anyone help me?
Try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

Tried to load photos to ipod but its ways the required file cannot be found
I tried to load my photos on to my ipod but its ways "the required file cannot be found" so what do i have to do to get the file? i have the ipod video. so can any one hepl me plz!
I had the same error message after I had restored my Pictures/iPhoto folder from a backup. After restoring my iMac's Pictures folder, I kept getting that message. Everything else would sync just fine, even the movies.
I figured that it was the iPod photo cache folder. It's located in the Users>Pictures>iPhoto Library>iPod Photo Cache. I deleted that folder, it sync'd up all the pics.
This simple deletion was my answer. I've searched through these boards so many weeks for the answer. I've done those Five R's to no avail so many times. I even thought my ipod being Windows Fat32 based was an issue. I hope this works for you as well. Caveat: always make backups before you delete anything. -
