First, check to make sure it is plugged in. With all of the devices you may have and limited USB ports, you may have mistaken which is plugged in. When you pull down file to burn a CD, a pop up window should occur giving you a selection of your internal and external CD drives. If you only see your internal drive, try inserting a disc and see if you computer asks what you want to do with the CD. If so, it shows your computer is now seeing the drive. If nothing happens, try restarting your computer with your external drive plugged in.

Some have found relief just by reinstalling, but it is more than likely incompatible third-party applications that slow it down.
You will have to investigate to see what it is.
Open Activity Monitor and see if anything is using a lot of CPU% or Memory. If they are, check to see if there is an update for them.
Another place to look is the Console. See if anything is logging repeating messages with throttling and/or respawn in the All Messages list.
Sometimes it is not that easy to root out the problems, but if you have anything that purported to clean, protect, optimize, maintain, or flush your system, then that is likely the cause.

I can't find how to switch off something in Lion that i could in SL

This is such a simple question to answer that i am a bit embarrased asking it.
Before i installed Lion, i had configured a setting in Snow Leopard that i WANT to disable in Lion, but i cant find where to disable IT !.
It is simply the setting that Blanks the desk top when i move the cursor to the left or right top or bottom corners.
I think it was called EXPOSE, i cant find it in LION ???
I know it isnt the end of the world, but it is annoying me, i go to close a window, but blank the screen instead !! gggrrrr

It was Spaces the other word i was looking for.
Was i correct in thinking that Expose and Spaces had an Icon of its very own in System Preferences in Snow Leopard ?, or did i dream it ?

I keep getting an error message that tells me the document i am trying to attach to an email is currently in use, that i need to close it, and retry. i can't find where it is in use, and i am unable to attach it to the email. what do i do?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

HT2490 menu bar at top screen mountain lion is on pop up mode, I want it to stay visible but can't find where to do that on the system preferences

I hate the mountain lion upgrade and have had more problems with it than good things!
Its reset a lot of things on my computer, one of them being that the menu bar at the top with the apple logo on the right etc pops in and out of view whereas I would like it to stay visible but admittedly I'm no computer genius but I can't find where to change this setting. Any help???

I have the most up to date adobe flash player also but it always tells me its not up to date. No idea how to fix this but I hope apple fixes it soon. Really disappointed with the "upgrade"

If you can't see the menu bar using Safari, it sounds like you're using full screen mode.
Try Control + Command + F to reveal or hide the menu bar.

I can't find where to download the creative cloud

so i started out with the free trial and then signed up for the monthly plan. I tried to open photoshop on my desktop and it kept saying my free trial was over. I uninstalled it and illustrator but couldn't download them again. It said in the creative cloud that they were already downloaded. I then uninstalled the creative cloud and now I can't find where to download it again.
