Hi Toshiba members! FYI Here's a excellent guide!

HI Toshiba members and guests. Here is a excellent place to start trouble shooting when your PC won't boot windows. I'm still waiting for these to become sticky's. I'm about to give up on staff. I guess if they made it to easy, you might not need old Dokie!
Possible Causes
There are multiple problems that could cause a computer not to start:
There might be a problem with the power.
A recently installed or upgraded program or driver could be interacting incorrectly with the computer.
The Windows installation on the hard drive could be corrupted. This can occur if the computer was turned off incorrectly or had a virus.
There could be an actual hardware failure.
We'll help you figure out which was the cause, fix it if possible, and back up your data if needed.
Troubleshooting Overview
When the computer powers on, the hardware must know to look on the hard drive for Windows before Windows begins to load. Once we have checked the basic systems of the computer, we will consider the actual windows installation.
If none of this can fix the problem, Windows might be corrupted beyond repair or there could be a hardware failure. We’all help you backup your data and perform a recovery, returning the computer to its out-of-box condition. Performing a recovery will fix most software-related problems, including corruption of Windows and viruses. You can also skip directly to a system recovery if, at any point, the steps above become too complicated.

How many of you actually read this and tried these things step by step before posting??
This process was well thought out by staff. If you would try these things before posting, it could save a lot of time.
Dokie!!
Is There any reason this can't be locked and be made a sticky. Do I need to explain a sticky?
Hey eagle how about a comment? Maybe you better not comment. You might get in trouble like Dokie!
Good night Vietnam!!

Hi Please read this very carefully.
Reset the BIOS
The BIOS, which stands for Basic Input-Output System, controls the computer before Windows does. It tests the primary hardware components and then loads Windows. Sometimes the settings in the BIOS change and cause errors. We'll reset the BIOS. If you are unable to enter the BIOS settings and perform these steps, you do not need to continue with this article. You may have a hardware failure that would require servicing.
When the laptop first starts, a message should be displayed specifying a key to press to enter Setup.
On most computers, this is the F2 button.
Press this button when prompted.
Alternatively, try tapping F2 every half-second or so or try holding F2 while starting the computer.
Once you enter Setup, follow the instructions displayed to reset the BIOS to defaults (usually pressing F9).
Follow the instructions displayed to save and exit (usually pressing F10).
This is not my first rodeo.
Good night Vietnam. Is that really that hard to understand??
Dokie!! I really hate it when I'm the only one that comments on my threads.

• Black ink only setting on office jet 6700

I have set my printing preferences to use black ink only however I have just been notified by my printer that my magenta cartridge 933 is out of ink and my printer refuses to let me print anything. Why if I have it set for black ink only would the color ink be decreasing and I am not able to print a black text only document when there is plenty of black ink left (only magenta is out of ink)

Welcome to the forums lnichols
I appreciate your frustration, I really do. However, this particular printer uses some color inks even when printing in black only. If you did run out of color and kept printing black only, you will cause problems with the printhead.
FYI, HERE is the user guide to your printer, see page 74.
I've also linked page yield information HERE.
I hope that helps!

• Black and white printing when no colour

Is there a way of overcoming this on this machine - never had this problem before although judging by this thread it is not uncommon. I am printing text documents - why on earth would it need magenta to work? So far it has been allowing me to print in black and white but now it says magenta depleted - even though I haven't printed anythig in colour!

• Used iMac G3 questions...

Hello, I am new to the Mac world and have bought this week 3 used Macs, one Powerbook G3, a Powerbook G4, and yesterday a used iMac G3 400MHz/160MB Ram. My question is concerning the iMac. It has a brand new copy of Panther that when I turned it on walked me through the steps to set it up, bu the machine came with NO disks at all, and it only has a 9GB hard drive. What I want to do is install and format a 180GB drive I have from an old PC, and I would like to know how and if I can just "clone" the current hard drive and put it one the new bigger one. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. As I said I am new to Macs and have used and fixed and built PC's for years, but as so happy to finally be a mac user, albeit I'm not using newer macs, but it's a start, right?...thanks in advance for any and all comments!!

bu the machine came with NO disks at all, and it only has a 9GB hard drive.
In that case, you definitely want to put a clone on an external backup. These iMacs won't see any more than 128 GB, so some of that 180 will be wasted. There is software available to make it possible to utilize the entire drive, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. You'll lose so much to formatting, so in the end you're really not wasting all that much. When you format the drive, be sure to close it off around 127.5 and leave the rest as free space. That way you won't encounter any problems with the OS attempting to write to the drive across that boundary. Here's an excellent guide to formatting and partitioning.

Here's one guide to replacing the drive/opening the bottom cover (there are others if you look around)

The jumpers should probably be set to Master/Single. This has to be an older ATA/IDE drive. (i.e. not SATA)
I use freeware Carbon Copy Cloner for cloning.
http://www.bombich.com/
Good place to find Mac compatible external drives (and RAM); you want a Firewire drive, USB will be much too slow and I don't think you can boot this iMac from USB (your RAM is OK, but you'll need more if you want to run Tiger; Tiger is the highest OS you can run on this machine.)
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATAFW800_FW400USB
(You can run an SATA external through Firewire on this computer.)
Whatever external you get, it should have an Oxford Chipset.
Panther is quite old now and no longer supported by Apple--as is Tiger now. You'll also have a difficult time finding Browsers for it. But one good one still around is Camino, which may be a little slow (but you won't be able to run the latest Camino 2., only the 1.6)
http://caminobrowser.org/download/releases/1.6.10/
I think maybe Opera will work also.

• Which functions and features in Numbers are NOT exported correctly to Excel?

I wish to know EXACTLY which functions I use in a Numbers sheet WILL FAIL to export correctly to an Excel or Neoffice spreadsheet.
For instance, I created a Numbers spreadsheet using prolific use of the IFERROR function. However, when I EXPORT to XLS, all the cells that used the IFERROR function were replaced by the literal value of the cell. My IFERROR formulae were not EXPORTED as I had expected.
I note that some formulae were converted correctly in my EXPORTED spreadsheet: eg MAX, MIN, AVERAGE.
I understand that IFERROR was a function introduced recently to Excel, ie in the 2007 version. Consequently, I suspect that Numbers exports to a pre-2007 version of Excel. If so, which version?
I have found this list that shows which functions are compatable amongst various versions of Excel:
Excel Functions: Compatibility Reference (2010, 2007 & 2003). (n.d.). Retrieved from https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsHau4_IeCfwdG45c0VhcjBBUGNreVo2ZzN NRU1BT0E#gid=0
This list shows that, for instance, IFERROR exisits inb both Excel 2007 and Numbers-09. So why is IFERROR not exported?
Curmi, J. (n.d.). Summary of function in excel and numbers-09. Retrieved from http://curmi.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/functions-in-excel-and-numbers- 09.pdf
Some examples of my use of ISERROR in Numbers are as follows:
=IFERROR(RANK(C47,$C47:$J47,1),"")
=IFERROR(MEDIAN(C51:C58),"")
=IFERROR($C32-C88+1,"")
I use the above function to carry out the calculation ONLY IF a cell is non-blank and contains a number.
More questions
What are the rules that Numbers uses to convert to Excel?
Is Numbers converting to the 2003 version of Excel? ... or an earlier version? ... which version?
Why desn't Numbers advise me there were conversion errors or simplifications made?
eg: "Cell A33 Function IFERROR was exported to the cell value for Excel"
Is there a preference that I can select which version of Excel that Numbers will export to?
In the meantime, I must abandon Numbers and use NeoOffice!

Thanks,
I applied your suggested ISERROR transformation to examples such as:
=IFERROR(RANK(C47,$C47:$J47,1),"")
=IFERROR(MEDIAN(C51:C58),"")
=IFERROR($C32-C88+1,"")
However, a caution for young players....
Certainly, the ISERROR function exports to .xls. However, it behaves differently in NeoOffice.
Items 1 and 2 function identically in the case of say, ranking a row in which some cells are blanks.
Item 3, when translated using ISERROR to =IF(ISERROR(C32-C88+1),"", C32-C88+1), results in "" (ie error is raised) in Numbers but yields figure 0 in NeoOffice when there is a blank in either of the cells.
I recall from programming school in the mid-1970s that using GOTO statements and On Error branch statements were not admissible as routine programming steps. In fact, we received an automatic fail grade if we used a GOTO or GOTO like construction. So, I have found a more programmatically elegant way to solve my problem: eg:
=IF(C88="","",C32-C88+1)
Curiously, earlier I found/suspect this does not work equivalently in Numbers and NeoOffice:
=IF(ISBLANK(C88),"",C32-C88+1)
When you try using ISBLANK you always get an intuitively unexpected result because ISBLANK ONLY gives TRUE when there is absolutely nothing in a cell. A Formula reference in the cell, even if the function result yields "", gives FALSE... because, according to the definition of ISBLANK the cell contains a formula.
As I tell my students, ALWAYS lookup the HELP on any function you use. ALWAYS test the function to see how it performs!.... and lesson 3: Always test your spreadsheet on different systems.... then hope!

• Excel XML Spry ?

Hello all,
I've done some looking around the forum and haven't found an
answer yet so I thought I had better ask.
I have DW CS3.
I have used the basic spry feature to attach a basic XML file
to my HTML file to load content. I am not very familiar with XML.
Our office keeps a members list in Excel. I see that Excel
can be saved as XML. Is there a way using something like the SPRY
features to connect an XML file generated from Excel to an HTML
page. Then each month they could export a new members list as XML
from Excel, I upload the XML file and the HTML page is
automatically updated?
Thanks for any insight.
Take Care,
Brett

Thanks for the reply.
I have saved the Excel file as XML. But i cannot make much
sense of it.
I have tried the spry thing… when I connect to the XML
file I saved from Excel I don't see anything to choose that looks
familiar. In the simple XML file I have tested I set a section
called location. When I connect to the XML file I can choose to
include name, location,image, feature.
Here is a sample.
<attraction>

<location></location>

<feature></feature>
</attraction>
Here is a sample of what is saved out of Excel

How do I select the company name area, etc when everything is
written exactly the same. There is nothing to classify the entries
like "location" in the first sample.

• When my instructor app shares, my connectivity status changes to poor and her voice becomes sporadic

I am training to be an at-home rep and learning on-line through AdobeConnect. Whenever the instructor app shares with the client's application (through secure VPN and Citrix) the connectivity status bar swings between poor to excellent and much of the time I lose her voice. The IT Support has not been able to figure out why -- my PC and technical requirements all meet their standards. I doubled my broadband speed, but that also didn't solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated. I will have to drop out of training if I can't get this fixed soon. Rosie

I am having the same problem as the person above. I have been working with my DSL provider for 2 weeks and have been unable to find anything that is causing the latency problems (although my DSL service has improved overall with the changes that were made). When I connect via my Verizon aircard, everything works great, but I will rapidly start getting charged for data overages in a week.
Because the aircard worked great, this led me to believe it was a problem with my DSL connection. I have done trace routes and there is no consistent issue with slower ping times or packet loss. Yes, I get the occasional 200-250ms ping times on one hop, but that is not unusual due to the reduced priority on ping traffic (ICMP, I think). Anyway, then I learned that routes are not always symetrical and that the return path may be different than the outgoing or request path. And the return path seems to be where the issue is.
How can I work with someone to troubleshoot my return path from adobeconnect.com? Can someone do a traceroute to 68.22.72.67? That is the hop just before my router.
FYI, here is what else I have done to try to narrow down the problem:
- use aircard and it works perfect, but that uses a different path which leads me to believe the path is the issue
- turn off all other devices connected to the router
- trace routes, endless ping tests, pathping, speedtest.net, pingtest.net, all tested good
- bridge tap was removed lessening my distance to the CO from 9000 ft to 8000 ft
- replaced corroded connectors
- reprovisioned line to the red back (ATT's term)
- changed pair from the CO
- attempted adobe connect sessions on multiple computers with both Windows 7 and XP
- instructor reduced connection speed from LAN to DSL and reduced frame rate at my request with no change
- she records the classes and the recordings are perfect except for the times when the class pauses.
The latency I am experiencing is when she shares a screen and then it can go as high as 8s, but mostly it is between 2 and 4s. That is enough to make the audio completely drop out or it is just uninteligible with the short bursts that come out.
Please help. If you can help identify where the problem is in the return path, I will attempt to take it from there. Scott

• I bought my friend's used laptop. She doesn't know how to get her itunes account off the laptop, so I'm not able to do anything. How do I remove her account from the laptop?

I bought my friends Toshiba laptop. Her itunes account is on there, hooked up to a credit card. She doesn't remember her ID. I think I had it emailed to her by typing in her email address and first and last name. Now that she probably HAS her Apple ID and Password, how do we remove her account from the laptop so I can use MY itunes?

Delete the ENTIRE iTunes folder from her user directory.
Frankly, you should be restoring the laptop as new, either using the restore CD provided by Toshiba or by reinstalling Windows with a Windows CD to remove ALL of her personal information.

• I don't understand the IF logique of Numbers it doesn't work like Excel

Here is my Excel formula =IF(E24=1,4,IF(E24=2,8,IF(E24=3,12,IF(E24=4,18,0))))
I really like the look and the feel of Numbers but the IF fonction seem's a lot limited. To be more clear
if I enter on excel etheir 1, 2, 3, 4, it gives me the good anwser 4, 8, 12, 18. No idea how to do that on Numbers
Pleas help me. :OD

Hi Tailt,
IF in Numbers works pretty much identically to IF in Excel. Here;s your formula, withe the E24 cell references edited to fit the rows on the sample table. As you can seem it gives 'correct' results for each of the 1, 2, 3, 4 test values (rows 3, 4, 5, 6), as well as correct results for values not included in this set (all other rows).
I suspect Wayne's analysis is correct, and the error message you can read on clicking the red error triangle is "E24 isn't a valid reference." Usually "isn't a valid reference" means the referenced cell does not exist on the table.
Regards,
Barry
