Hidden duplicate network drives without assigned letter

I have a computer at work that is connected to duplicate mapped drives. We discovered a network path error when trying to make relative links in Acrobat. The computer folder showed all the correct network paths. When I used the 'net use' command
in cmd it showed duplicate mapped drives without out assigned letters that didn't appear in the GUI. Below is an example (Leaving out most of the drive names for security purposes). The two drives at the bottom are duplicates of the P: drive. I deleted these
duplicates in in the cmd window, but it has happened again and we can't figure it out. Can anyone tell me why?
Status       Local     Remote                    Network
OK           P:        \\p             GING      Microsoft Windows Network
OK           R:        \\p                           Microsoft Windows Network
OK           S:        \\P                           Microsoft Windows Network
OK           W:       \\c                           Microsoft Windows Network
OK           Y:        \\p                           Microsoft Windows Network
OK                     \\p             GING       Microsoft Windows Network
OK                     \\p             GING       Microsoft Windows Network
The command completed successfully.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,
Have you tried to use another user account to check?
You could modify the registry value of mapped drivers to see if this issue persists:
Note: please backup the registry before performing the any modification.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Map Network Drive MRU
In the registry value, you could clear the duplicated drive path.

  • Mounting Network Drives Without Windows Opening

I have 3-4 Networked drives that automount for my users when they login, but whenever they login it opens up a window for each of the mounted drives.  Any way to prevent this?  I've tried marking "hide" in system preferences for them in login items, but that made no difference.

I am trying to run a computer on which to host installers for a schools network. The computer that i have all the installers on is partitioned into 3 parts: a system partition, a partition for the installer programs, and a partition for filemaker serving. I need to be able to connect to the computer through the network and access the installers. I don't want people logging on to access the home directory of the user account that they are using to connect to the install volume. I would really like to be able to tell it when people log on from another spot on the network to just mount the installer partition nothing else. I am aware that os 10 defaultly mounts just the home directory when you access a name on that computer from another local.
I hope this is enough information.

  • Duplicate Network Drive.. causing Mayhem

    Hi All,
So I am in a real mess. I set-up a network between to Quad Core Intel G5's using the file sharing options in the system prefs and a gigabit ethernet cable between the machines. I have an external raid on machine A, which I was accessing through machine B, and it was mounted on machine B under Volumes/video_drive. However when I now browse through the Volumes directory using terminal I am the proud owner of video_drive and videodrive1 !! Video-drive is a pale shadow of its former self and only shows partial contents of the actual video_drive or (videodrive1). I have turned off file sharing on machine A, disconnected the ethernet cable, and restarted both machines, however the ghost video_drive still appears in my Volumes directory on machine_B...??
    Any ideas? Please Help.

greetings from a sunny morning in sydney australia
ok — i have reformatted the drive using disk utility (connected via USB) to HFS+. i have copied about 50GB of data. all looks good. then i shutdown, remove USB connection and connect to drive via airport>wireless router>switch>ethernet cable>drive. in this mode, files with generic extensions (.mp3, .mov, .jpeg, .doc, etc...) are visible as usual with the usual icons. folders are also normal.
BUT, any file the name of which does not have an extension, and any alias file (not having .alias) has changed to a 'unix executable file', the icon changing to a small black 'terminal window' picture or a what looks like a little creature with big eyes and horns (not kidding!). there also additional files with such icons — desktop DB files and the like.
this is done with only one share (top level, the drive itself) and no users or groups, just an admin login in both times.
so everything works fine, except some kinds of circumstances resulting in weird icons and 'unix executable files'.
thanks again for your patience and assistance

  • Need To Log to network drive using FileHandler

I'm trying to log to a PC network drive using
    new FileHandler("//abc_machine/directory_name/temp%g.log")
The generate method (which generates a filename from a pattern)
appears to be stripping out my first "/" denoting the network drive
Is there any way to log to a network drive without using a drive letter?
    Thanks in advance,

  • RoboHelp 8 runs slow when using network drive...

I have several users at my business that have upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. They are reporting that when they work on projects which are housed on a network drive, RohoHelp performs very slowly (which never seemed to happen before with X5). I have read on several forums that RoboHelp should only be used with projects that are on the local drive, but I cannot find any official recommendation from Adobe about this, nor have I found any explanation as to why the network drive doesn't work well. Has Adobe every officially commented on this, and does anyone know why network drive performance is so lousy? Is there anything that can be done to allow my users to keep on utilizing their network drive without the poor performance? Thanks in advance for any help you folks can provide, I am stumped.

    Hi, and welcome, Robo_Newbie
You're about to become Robo_Oldie real quick
Your RoboHelp projects MUST live on a local drive. You can archive them on a network, but NEVER actually open and edit while they are on the network.
The two reasons most people incorrectly assume they should be on the network is because you want to share with other authors and you want to back them up in case your hard drive crashes. Those are valid reasons, but it doesn't work because the .CPD (an Access database cache file) typically becomes corrupted - not to mention the perfomance issues related to LAN latency.
So what most of us do is to either use the free RoboSource Control that comes with RoboHelp or to work out a manual routine of copying your current work to a LAN for safekeeping and establishing a routine with the other authors on who will work on what, when.
Sorry to break the bad news. That's the reality.

  • How to: automount network drive at start up?

so i put my netwrok drive to login item under user account control and it automaticelly mount the drive on boot up but it really annoy me when the finder window popping up and showing the drive is mounted everytime it statrt up eventhough I tried selecting the checkbox to "hide".
    OS X 10.8.3
is there a way to automount a network drive without popping up in the finder at start up?

Unless the mount is needed before a user logs in, it may mount on demand, depending on what process demands it first. If that doesn't work for you, see below.

  • Network Drive Hidden Files

When I modify files saved on network drives, a hidden file is created on the network drive that bothers my co-workers. I originally dealt with a .DS_Store file in every folder I accessed on the network drive. I researched and found the support topic related to this issue. I used the command:
    defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
There are no more .DS_Store files, but now, every time I modify something on the network drive, a hidden file appears for the modified file. For instance, I save a Word file Doc-1.doc and a ._Doc-1.doc hidden file is created. Also, if I move or copy a file to the network drive, the same thing (drag and drop x.pdf and ._x.pdf hidden folder.
The single .DS_Store file was bad enough, but now every file I access has a hidden file with it. Any commands to prevent this from happening?

The '._' files contain meta-data specific to the Mac. Contained therein are things like custom icons, the label color for the file, the file type, the file creator, etc.
The Mac only creates those files if the filesystem being written too doesn't natively handle Mac file and resource data. If you can mount the filesystem using AFP instead of NFS or SMB/CIFS, the problem will go away (and AFP also has the benefit of being faster). There's really no way to disable the creation of the '._' files outright.
There are four ways to address the issue:
    1. Let your co-workers get over it. Any decent CIFS implementation will hide the '._' files so they won't see them. The files cause no harm, so it shouldn't matter.
    2. Manually delete the '._' files. You can do this periodically, even write a script to do it and have it run automatically on a schedule. However, when you delete the files, be cognizant that you are throwing away some information. OS X is going to have to guess the file type, and you won't be able to use custom icons or icon label colors.
    3. Use BlueHarvest ($13 download; 30-day free trial). This monitors file creation and deletes '._' just after they're written. You can set rules to delete '._' only for certain types of files too.
    4. Use DAVE. DAVE preserves the file meta-data on Windows shares that support alternative data streams by saving the data in an ADS. It should work with most CIFS-type servers.
You might also ask your sysadmin if it's possible to add Mac File Services for Windows -- which lets you access Windows shares as native OS X AFP shares.

  • Hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 / Lion Problem

Updated to Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion and got this "problem":
The hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 (unlike in 10.6 Snow Leopard).
Normally these network drives are hidden (in Finder and other Apps) - but Adobe Bridge CS5 is showing them, despite "show hidden files" is unchecked in Adobe Bridge.
Not a dramatic "bug", but it also shouldn't be a big problem for Adobe Bridge engineers to solve this. My first question to the Adobe Support was answered like: "we don't know what Apple did change, so we cannot do anything". Hmmm, are you serious?
I tried to resolve that problem by myself but failed. So, if an Adobe engineer is reading this post: perhaps Adobe Bridge is ignoring the automounter master map (that was my approach to resolve it):
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master                    # Use directory service
    /net           -hosts                 -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home                                        auto_home       -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers               -fstab
    /-                              -static
You cannot do anything to these folders, so it is not a serious issue, but, I mean, did someone at Adobe check compatibiliy with 10.7 and ignored this issue? If so, are there an other issues ignored?
But I guess, the compatibilty update for Bridge CS5 for Lion is Bridge CS6 - to be fair: I also have to say, that in general Bridge is running okay on Mac OS X 10.7.2 (but could be better, as always;)

    Hi Curt Y,
thanks for your answer! Yes you' re right, I forgot to mention that ... before I posted here, I sent a bug report via the Apple Bug Report webpage about the issue ... of course, here are 2 parties involved.
I had a similiar problem once and I got a meesage back from Apple: "that it is a 3rd party problem, sorry" (it was about color management).
I am just a user and I often feel very strange about Apple's (topsecret) communication behaviour ... Whatever, what do I know about software engineering? - Right.
Maybe someone on this forum has an idea, because I'm afraid, thus it is not a serious bug, no one would take care about it in the next time (during my research I found an older post here on the forum about the same problem ...).
    thanks for help in advance,

  • Can anyone tell me how to install a network printer driver without having the network printer online?

Can anyone tell me how to install a network printer driver without having the network printer online? It doesn't matter what manufactors make the network printers. Is a netwaork printer(with network card) has to have that printer on line to be able to install
the driver? This is the point of my question!
I've ask a same type of question previously, but I can't either get good answer nor reply on the response.

    DP
The computer (and driver) have to handshake with the printer, QED it has to be either online or physically connected and if it is physically connected it wont work on the network so yes it does.

  • Client can map a network drive but programs can't browse to it

Greetings.  I have Windows Server 2012 Essentials and this problem has come and gone and come back again but I'm not sure what the solution is:
I have shares on the server.
The client (Windows 8.1) can open the shared folder as a "Mapped Network Drive".  Explorer can open it, browse, modify.  However, Quickbooks can't browse to the drive on the client.  It does not "see" it. Neither can Firefox.
This is on more than one client.  What I did on the client is added the folder as a "Network location" and this does allow the programs to see the share.  But I would like to know how to make mapped network drives stable and reliable.  If
anyone has any insights, please let me know.  Thanks.
    Felix

    Hi Felix,
Please navigate to the Network location and select this map network drive. Right click it and select Properties.
In Properties panel, please select Security tab and check if you assign related permission correctly.
Based on your description, I understand this issue just occurred in those third-party applications (such as
QuickBooks and so on). So, I find following solution in the QuickBooks website. Please check if can help you to solve this issue.
QuickBooks does not recognized the mapped
    network drive

  • Using a mapped network drive

I have mapped a network drive (q:) to a library in (hosted) SharePoint 2013. I have full permissions.
I pasted a pdf file into the local q: drive but it doesn't appear in the library in SharePoint.
I know there are alternative ways of doing this (different ways to map a drive - where a drive letter is not assigned) or using SkyDrive, but ultimately I want to use a program that requires to access data in Access tables using a path that includes a drive
    letter.
Can anyone explain why it seems that changes written to the local mapped drive are not being updated in the library that it is mapped to.
    Thanks.

    HI,
Do you have any columns that require metadata values?
This works for libraries without required medatada
    example:
    Net Use Z: Delete
    Net Use Z: http://MyWebApp/Documents
    robocopy C:\MyFolder Z: /COPY:DAT /Z /XA:H /XO /NP /W:5 /LOG+:C:\logs\SPDaily.log
The example copies files from C to
    http://MyWEebApp/Documents
But if I run the script as another user and there are required metadata values then the file will be copied and the file will not have a checked in version. you can go to the library setting and click on
Manage files which have no checked in version

  • Network drive library location failure and Syncing problems

I transferred my iTunes library to a wireless network drive. If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location. I can easily change it back to the network drive, but want to avoid restoring the default location. How can I do this?
A related problem is with syncing my iPod with the new network drive iTunes library location. In short, it won't sync with the new location and asks me to Restore the iPod continuously. The only way to get the iPod to sync is when the library goes back to the default iTunes location (which I don't want because I don't have music there anymore).
    Would love some help.

+If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location+
That's how it works. There is no way to stop itunes from doing it. If you ever find you've opened itunes without that drive available, immediately close itunes. Use a shift-start to re-open it using the networked ITL file.
Have you tried assigning a different drive letter to the ipod? Maybe it's competing with the networked drive letter. Just go into windows device manager to change the ipod's drive letter.

  • PSE3.0 - PC format... network drive backup?

Hi folks. I have been looking through all the backup posts -which are considerable- hoping to find an answer. no answer so here is my post.
I need to format my laptop. The thing is my dvd drive is busted so I cannot do a disc backup. I was hoping to do a full backup and then select destination to a HDD on another pc on my network, then hopefully 'restore' it later. I find however that PSE3.0.1 only sees my dvd drive and the 2 partitions on my pc.
This is the first time I have had to back up my photos so I am praying that I can do something. After reading all the posts my head is still spinning about a regular backup and issues.
My thoughts: Can't I just copy 'My Pictures' (where all my files are dumped) across the network without using PSE3. Then [copy] my pse profile/account/collections/tags/structure (everything basically) aswell. Then all i'd need to do is re-install, overwrite the installed files with my backed up ones and be good to go?
Of course i would have to be careful to set up my windows files the same so it all fit in.
Would this work? Anything to help is appreciated. Also if i missed a post somewhere from someone else I am sorry for you troubles.
    Thanks, Simon
edit: i just found this thread

Well that helps me alot in the 'how to back it up without loosing all your stuff' area. Just need a confirmation now if i should proceed. Thanks again.

The following works in PSE 4 on a Windows machine (I would assume PSE3 too).<br /><br />To access your network drive for backup, you must map it.  To do this, find <br />the network computer in your Explorer.  You should see your network drive <br />(if it is shared properly).<br /><br />Then right mouse click and select Map network drive.<br /><br />You can choose the defaults.  Note the "letter" assigned (usually Z).<br /><br />When you are complete it should open a new window on the the Z drive.<br /><br />Now in PSE, when backing up, you should be able to access your "My computer" <br />and where you will see your "C" drive (or your D drive etc...), the new <br />drive "Z" will be there (or whatever letter was assigned).<br /><br />You should be able to click it and create a directory for your backup.<br /><br /><[email protected]> wrote in message <br />news:[email protected]...<br />> Hi folks.
