Need To Log to network drive using FileHandler

I'm trying to log to a PC network drive using
new FileHandler("//abc_machine/directory_name/temp%g.log")
The generate method (which generates a filename from a pattern)
appears to be stripping out my first "/" denoting the network drive
Is there any way to log to a network drive without using a drive letter?
Thanks in advance,
Dominic

No, i just tried.

  • Looking for ideas regarding encrypting a network drive used by 2 OSX Macs

I was thinking of getting a networked HD (connected by Ethernet to my wireless router) to enable my two Macs (wife's tower running 10.3.9, my Powerbook running 10.5.8) to store each of our iPhotos, iMovies, iTunes, etc. libraries on one network drive (rather than on each Mac's HD.)
Since the Powerbook is so portable, and equipped with Airport, it would be the logical CPU to position next to our living room HDTV - using one Audio cable and one DVD-to-HDMI cable. Then, either user could log into their own account on the Powerbook and wirelessly access the networked HD to display their personal iPhoto, iMovie, etc. library contents over the TV.
But I wonder... if wife normally maintains her iPhoto library by logging into her G4 tower, maybe OSX's permissions will thwart her from accessing it when she logged into her account on the Powerbook because she would appear to be a different user.
I also wonder if It would also be wise...or even possible... to encrypt the networked drive, somehow, to add another level of security to the files, since anyone who managed to hack thru my Router might potentially be able to read all the files on the HD. The router companies lead us to believe WEP and other protocols are totally secure, but I've also read that these can be hacked by some individuals. This being a 1TB networked drive, I expect some other data might get backed up to it, too, making the security issue a bit more of a concern.
The security and encryption issues in this scenario are muddy to me....but it seems like this is could be a great way to securely consolidate both users' iPhotos and other media on one network drive, accessible from either computer with appropriate logins....or would there be some show-stopping 'gotcha'? What do you think?

instead of having to boot up both Macs, initiate file sharing, fumble to get things mounted, etc. each time ...
You can leave the desktop Mac to time out and go to sleep. and set "wake on Ethernet Administrator Access", which should allow you to wake it up and get files.
the Powerbook uses OSX 5.8 while the G4 tower is on Panther.
That does not present a problem or File Sharing, which can be made compatible across a wide \[but not infinite] range or Mac Operating Systems.
So they aren't using the same version of iPhoto...the G4 uses iPhoto6, and the Powerbook uses iPhoto 9.
Our household runs a mix of 10.4 and 10.5, having just upgraded the faster Macs to 10.5. We have our entire iPhoto library in iPhoto 8 \[iLife '08], which supports the range of Mac OS we are using, and many features including ordering prints (but not face-recognition). If you want to combine your libraries, perhaps you could drop back to iPhoto 8 and re-import the iPhoto9 stuff, and upgrade to iPhoto 8 on the G4/400. \[You CAN run 10.5.8 on a G4/400, but you have to use some hacks to install it, and it may be a little sluggish at times. Then you could simply upgrade to iPhoto 9 all around.
Encrypting an entire drive makes me really queasy. I have spent too many hours digging out after drive failures and software errors have clobbered a drive, and no matter how hard you work at recovery, at least a few files always get lost. When you encrypt an entire drive, the Operating System sees the whole drive as one big file -- and errors in that file may make that file (your entire drive) unrecoverable. A friend of mine had just such a disaster at home when a drive space enhancer called "Stacker" blew up on him.
If you put Quicken or other financial data on your home Server or shared drive, I would still not worry about it, but if it keeps you up at night, you could encrypt just the financial data file (and keep it backed up religiously).
Because I do support for schools, I have also implemented Mac OS X Server at home. With a school-like setup, ALL users files are on the Server, and any user can use any Mac, their files just "appear" when they log in. File Sharing underlies everything, but it is all done without thinking about it -- the Server just does it. But Server is a US$500 package (down from $1000) that requires a dedicated Mac and a lot of fiddling, so I do not recommend it for your situation.
One thing I do recommend, if you are going to store files on your network, is to try to upgrade/add an Ethernet Switch at Gigabit Ethernet speed, if possible. The Router does not need that speed, but Mac-to-Mac (if you go the File Sharing route) or Mac-to-Network_Drive (if you go that route) will be much more responsive. If your G4/400 does not have Gigabit Ethernet, you can get a PCI slot card for it. Or maybe upgrade it to a newer old Mac that can run 10.5.8 without hacks.

  • Need mac to forget network drive - it keeps connecting on bootup

How do I get my iMac to for get a network drive completely so that it won't connect on bootup.

Ok, I feel like a dummy; but happy enough to report I figured it out on my own.
Apparently AirPort Extreme assigned another IP (10.XX.XX.XX) versus my prior (192.XX.XX.XX). I only discovered this when I scrolled through the Terastation Pro display. It scrolls through the varying settings.
Once I realized a new IP was present, I used the "Go" "Connect to Server" commands.
Works great. Maybe someone will learn something from my own lesson.

  • Backup a network drive using Time Machine

    Hi all,
I have the following setup running. I have a Time Capsule that I am now using as an external drive to hold my iTunes and Aperture libraries. This works great! Attached to the Time Capsule I have a 2TB external disc that is used to back up my computer. This also works great! Now comes the question: Can I have the Time Capsule backed up onto to the external 2TB disc along with my computers backup?
    Hope you can help, thanks

You can "archive" the TC's internal disk to an attached USB drive, but it's not very satisfactory. See the green box in #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
For alternatives, see Kappy's post on +Basic Backup,+ complete with links to the web sites of each product. I don't know which will do it, but CarbonCopyCloner won't back up a network drive, and I think SuperDuper won't, either.

  • Backing up data FROM a network drive using Time Machine

Okay. I'm willing - rather begrudgingly - to accept the fact that I can't use my 2x1TB LaCie network drives to store backup data from Time Machine. (I'm really hoping that Apple will enable this functionality in a future update.)
However, the internal drives on my iMac and MBP are quite full, and I have a lot of media, so my iTunes and iPhoto Libraries are stored on one of the LaCie NAS drives.
It appears as though Time Machine will not backup the data on this volume, even though mounted in Finder. (In a sense, I understand this not being enabled by default, but surely Apple could have envisaged users storing large proportions of their data on external devices and given us the option to 'opt in' volumes to include with Time Machine?)
Absent any official support from Apple, has anyone worked out a way of enabling Time Machine to backup the data from any mounted volume other than the internal HDD?
That is, I want Time Machine to backup data in the mounted network volumes on my iMac to the external FW drive that is directly connected to it.

  • Automounting a network drive using NFS

    Hi
We have just recently installed a new server and want to mount it NFS rather than CIFS as we are seeing better performace that way. We can mount the server with the following line in terminal:
    mount -t nfs isilon:ifs /Users/login-name/Isilon
However we want to make this automoated/an auto mount on login. If we enter the above command in apple script it says there is an error with the -t nfs part although the line actually does work and mount our drive.
Does anyone have any idea about automounting a drive using nfs??
    Cheers

Try instead writing a bash script:
    #!/bin/sh
    sudo mount -t nfs isilon:ifs /Users/login-name/Isilon
    exit 0
Set privileges: sudo chown root:admin scriptname
Make executable: sudo chmod 755 scriptname
Save it somewhere then put it in the Login Items list of Accounts preferences.
Or you can try this utility, but I don't know that it will still work. You may find others, too, at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Need help connecting to network printer using xfce and cups

    Hello
please can someone assist me with setting up a printer.
I am running arch and xfce desktop.
I have an Epson Stylus Photo R800 USB printer connected to a wireless Belkin all-in-one Print Server.
I do not know how to connect to this printer.
I am not conversant in CUPS or network printing and would very much like to use the printer.
My arch box is connected through cable to a wireless router.
The print server is connected to the wireless router and the router confirms the print server is attached to the network.
The print server IP address is 192.168.0.100.
The printer server has a web interface which I used to set wireless and TCP settings. I should say that I went into this interface and configured the print server which is totally usable and fine from a Vista laptop using wireless - vista laptop "sees" the print server and prints over wireless, therefore I know the server and printer are working together and all the print server settings are fine. I dont know how Vista connects, it just does!
I tried installing gutenprint and foomatic, went into the CUPS server page (localhost:631) and found my printer but I'm not sure if my connection string (socket://192.168.0.100:9100) is correct. I've tried several values and several Epson drivers from the CUPS web interface, all to no avail. I just get this message:

    EDIT:
    SOLVED!
the problem was that gutenprint needed to be installed.
I looked at the rastertops file in /usr/lib/cups/filter and it was very small, handfull of lines, but refered to gutenprint (whatever that is).
"pacman -Q gutenprint" revealed it was not installed.
    All is fine now.
    GREAT!

  • Why do I need to log into google to use feedly? And, when I do, it wants me to give access to my to my account.

Is this safe, why should I have to sign in with my google account? And why do I need to give access to my account?

What does that mean. I'm just asking how to use one of the products that I was encouraged to use by a Mozilla email. I was worried about the issue of safety and privacy of having to sign in with another companies account (Google) and give access to that account.

  • Requirement is to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a windows service, which will be created by command: - net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes

    Environment:
    OS:  Windows 7 32/64 bit, Windows 2008 Server 64
    bit/ Windows 2012 Server 64 bit
    Priority:
    - Critical
    Requirement: - Since
the Windows Service is running under the Local System Account, we would like to emulate this same behaviour.
Basically, we would like to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a service using following
    command
    net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes.
    Already Attempt:
We tried to launch the CMD.exe using the DOS Task Scheduler AT command.  Here’s a sample command:
    AT 10:36 /interactive cmd.exe
But I received a warning that “due
to security enhancements, this task will run at the time excepted but not interactively.”
It turns out that this approach will work for XP, 2000 and Server 2003 but due to session isolation
Interactive services no longer work on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and above.
      2.  We
tried to create a secondary Windows Service via the Service Control (sc.exe) which merely launches CMD.exe.
    <Drive>:\sc create RunCMDAsLSA binpath= "cmd" type=own type=interact <Drive>:\sc
    start RunCMDAsLSA
In this case the service fails to start and results it the following error message:
FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
      3. One
suggestion, we found to launch CMD.exe via a Scheduled Task, but
it is not giving any option to launch CMD.exe in interactive mode; so that I can map network drive using net command.
      4. I read an article, which
demonstrates the use of PSTools from SysInternals. I launched the command line and executed following command
    psexec -i -s cmd.exe
PSTools worked fine, but It seems that in scope of Sysinternals Software License
Terms. You may not "use the software for commercial software hosting services."
Application will deploy on client, which will be like commercial,
so we are not able to use PSTools.
Kindly assist us for achieving the requirement. We have tried all the ways, but nothing is working for us. Kindly suggest.
    I will be really thankful.

    Hi Sir,
Nothing worked from above for us. You can see our remarks on posted query.
That’s why, we posted on forum.
And there will not be any vulnerability, because, if we will use "net
    use ..."
    in network domain; definitely,
we will provide username and password of mapped drive system.
And, that system, itself is given by client; so that, there must not be any vulnerability; they are ready to provide user name and password.
We need a way; by which we can complete the requirement. Kindly assist.

  • Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 using Synology NAS

    Original Thread:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/location-is-not-available-to-mapped-network-drive/ca7eac5c-0e3d-494b-b488-e245978e4db9
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 standard edition. I have come across a problem when using the option for mapped network drives. Under Windows 7 I would normally map a network drive (Synology NAS) and I could access all files, copy and paste, install
apps, and link media, all from within the mapped network drive. However, under Windows 8.1 I have come across a couple of problems.
    1. When I try to copy a file from my "Mapped Network Drive" to the C:\Drive (OS Boot Drive), I get the following error,
"E:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. if the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the
location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."
However, if I copy a file from the "NETWORK/Network Location" the file copies just fine with no problems. And, If I also copy a file from a "Added Network Location" the file also copies just fine with no problems. And, if I copy a file from
my "Mapped Network Drive" to my D:\Drive (non OS Drive), the file copies just fine with no problems.
    2. When I try to install apps from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will sometimes install and sometimes not (I am also choosing the option to run the programs as Administrator). Again if I try to install using either the "NETWORK/Network Location"
or an "Added Network Location" the apps install just fine with no problems.
    3. When I link media (music or videos) from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will work but once I reboot they no longer work as if they have lost the file path or link of the original source location.
    4. When I use FireFox (browser) and I set my default download dir to my "Mapped Network Drive" it will work once originally set it but after I reboot, it no longer works. However, again if I set the default download dir to either the "NETWORK/Network
Location" or an "Added Network Location" the default download dir works fine even after reboot.
While I am able to access my network drive using any of the three options, "Mapped Network Drive", "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network Location" but only "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network
Location"appear to be reliable. Tbh I would prefer to be able to use my "Mapped Network Drive" in Windows 8 as I have been able to under Windows 7.
    More info:
I currently have UAC set to "Never Notify".
I also have Windows 8.1 installed on three different systems and all of them give me the same exact problems. One of the systems is a completely clean install with no 3rd party apps installed.
Just so its clear I am able to access the "Mapped Network Drive" but unfortunately this method of access appears to be unreliable in Windows 8 but in Windows 7 it works flawlessly.
If I map a network drive from another pc running windows 7 or 8, I can access and use the mapped drive with no problems. This problem appears to be related to the Synology NAS devices and I have researched the Synology forums but only found one thread about
    the problem, here:
    http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76687
I have searched several forums and attempted to pick the brains of my local computer shops for any incite on this problem but I have been unable to find a solution/fix.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can temporarily disable the firewall to see whether the issue persists.
For this issue seems related to the Synology NAS devices, in order to get professional help regarding the product, we can contact the vendor support to see whether the issue
    can be fixed.
    Best regards,
    Frank Shen

  • Creating folder in pl/sql through Java in a network drive

    Hi there,
I am trying to create a folder in a network drive using Java with pl/sql wrapper.
This is my standard Java method that checks for the presence of a directory.
+public static int isDirectory (String path) {+*
File myFile = new File (path);*
if (myFile.isDirectory()) return SUCCESS; else return FAILURE;*
    +}+
I am calling this from my PL/SQL package.
FUNCTION isDirectory (p_path  IN  VARCHAR2) RETURN NUMBER*
    AS LANGUAGE JAVA*
    NAME 'FileHandler.isDirectory (java.lang.String) return java.lang.int';*
However, the isDirectory always returns false when I try to create a folder in a network drive.
Are there any permissions I should be granting before I can use a network drive ?
    Thanks,

call dbms_java.grant_permission('USER621430', 'java.io.FilePermission', 'C:\work',  'read, write');Although you may need execute action to create a folder. Or it may be some other permission entirely. Perhaps, java.lang.RuntimePermission to execute the OS create directory command would be a better approach?

  • Windows 7 (Client) map a network drive VPN Snow Leopard Server

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and are using a VPN service.
My services on the mac os x sls server are: AFP, DNS, Firewall, Open Directory, SMB and VPN.
I can connect the VPN from Mac clients and Windows 7 clients, but I can only map a network drive/share point on Mac´s.
On Windows 7 I get an error: path or name not found ( I am sure using the correct path, same from Mac client that works).
When I am using my internal network LAN I can map a network drive using Windows 7 and Mac but outside over a VPN not (only Mac works).
The only service, at this moment,  that I need is File Sharing outside my network LAN using a VPN.
How can I map a network drive from a Windows 7 client using a VPN, is there any Firewall rules / SMB rules / File Sharing rules that I missed on the server side?
    Thank You.

I really don't know what are going wrong with my settings. As you said/write it must be an easy setup.
I'm using a Time Capsule and used the Server app to add VPN to the port forwarding also.
When I am connected thru the VPN I tried to ping the Server IP and got no answer from it, from W7 client!?
My Mac's are just working fine with AFP and SMB share points thru the VPN.
I think I have missed some settings from the SMB or Firewall services for VPN with W7 client's or it is a Windows issue.....

In a (LabVIEW 6.0 WINNT)VI I have to open a file on a network drive with "Read lines from file.vi". In my devolpment environmet and after building the exe-file with aplication builder it works fine on my local machine. After installing the executable on a different computer (logged in as a different user), attached to the network, and installing the Run Time Engine "error 7 occured at open flie+.vi". The file path on both computers is exactly the same.
What is the reason that the file is found on my local computer and not found on an other users computer?????
    kind regards

    Hi,
With NT you have to be careful that you have the correct access rights to the network folders.
When you are logged in as a different user, can you see and open the file you are trying to read on the network drive using Explorer?

  • Recovering from a network drive

    Hey all
I've been successfully using Time machine on a network drive (using "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1"
in a console). Unfortunately, my HDD broke and apple support had to install a new one.
Now, how do I restore from that network drive again? I have a freshly installed and fully updated Leopard already and would like to just restore the users' settings. But, the network drive isn't visible in the migration assistant.
I even tried to copy the network drive's content to a firewire disc... still nothin visible.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks a million!!!
    Bernhard

Yes, I can mount the image and thus have access to all revisions stored by time machine. Maybe I could use rsync to get the data back in place? My hope was to make time machine recognize the image on the (now) local drive and recover from there... is that possible?
I know that it's unsupported to use time machine on a nas, but - for me - running time machine on a local hdd just doesn't make much sense (I want multiple computers to do their backup to the same drive and I also want to separate the backup drive from the original drives physically). I also don't see why this should be so difficult to implement (Vista can do it btw... :-)), unless, of course, Apple wants to sell its time capsules...
Anyway, I didn't want to complain, I would just like to get my data back.
    Thanks for your help!
