Network Drive Hidden Files

When I modify files saved on network drives, a hidden file is created on the network drive that bothers my co-workers. I originally dealt with a .DS_Store file in every folder I accessed on the network drive. I researched and found the support topic related to this issue. I used the command:
defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
There are no more .DS_Store files, but now, every time I modify something on the network drive, a hidden file appears for the modified file. For instance, I save a Word file Doc-1.doc and a ._Doc-1.doc hidden file is created. Also, if I move or copy a file to the network drive, the same thing (drag and drop x.pdf and ._x.pdf hidden folder.
The single .DS_Store file was bad enough, but now every file I access has a hidden file with it. Any commands to prevent this from happening?

The '._' files contain meta-data specific to the Mac. Contained therein are things like custom icons, the label color for the file, the file type, the file creator, etc.
The Mac only creates those files if the filesystem being written too doesn't natively handle Mac file and resource data. If you can mount the filesystem using AFP instead of NFS or SMB/CIFS, the problem will go away (and AFP also has the benefit of being faster). There's really no way to disable the creation of the '._' files outright.
There are four ways to address the issue:
1. Let your co-workers get over it. Any decent CIFS implementation will hide the '._' files so they won't see them. The files cause no harm, so it shouldn't matter.
2. Manually delete the '._' files. You can do this periodically, even write a script to do it and have it run automatically on a schedule. However, when you delete the files, be cognizant that you are throwing away some information. OS X is going to have to guess the file type, and you won't be able to use custom icons or icon label colors.
3. Use BlueHarvest ($13 download; 30-day free trial). This monitors file creation and deletes '._' just after they're written. You can set rules to delete '._' only for certain types of files too.
4. Use DAVE. DAVE preserves the file meta-data on Windows shares that support alternative data streams by saving the data in an ADS. It should work with most CIFS-type servers.
You might also ask your sysadmin if it's possible to add Mac File Services for Windows -- which lets you access Windows shares as native OS X AFP shares.

Word and Excel hang "downloading" file from network drive - copy file to be able to open it

Word or Excel hang trying to open files on a network drive maybe after an untidy close.
Symptoms: pick the file from a pinned entry on recent list or even direct from File!Open... or by double clicking on the file from file explorer. Word/Excel show in the middle of the status line a comment "Downloading:filename "
a progress bar, that shows no progress, and a white cross on a red circle to close. Some minutes later may Excel/Word say could not open filename.
I have removed any temporary copies of the file prefixed with the ~. However there are no documents shown in any document recovery pane.
If I rename the original file the problem is still there.
I can only clear the problem by working on a copy of the file. It works with either a new name of if the copy is used to replace the original file.
It seems file explorer's "copy" is clearing something within the file that is causing this problem.
I have seen the same issue with both Excel and Word documents in native Office 2010 format.
Is there a better way to clear this issue?

Hey guys, I currently run LR5 on Mac OSX. I've had my RAWs on an external HDD and have smart previews built for those files. Recently, I upgraded to a new router, the ASUS RT-N65U, and plugged in my WD My Passport Ultra HDD (FAT32 filesystem) into to. Now I've put my RAWs on the network drive, and verified via MD5 checksums that the files are being read correctly (albeit rather slowly) from the network drive.
However, whenever I try to view one of the photos on the network drive, Lightroom complains, "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged". I've verified via MD5 that the files are not damaged. Does anyone know how I can get LR to be happy with the files on my network drive?
(Bonus question: how do I make my network drive faster?)

Got RAWs from a D7000 and D600, LR v5.2 [922700].
Oddly things are working now... I ejectected the network drive in Finder and reconnected to my router. Lightroom no longer has problems viewing the photos, even after I closed my laptop and reopenned it. I think the problem might occur when my laptop goes to sleep for a long time and I reconnect. Will repoert back when I try that.
I'm using an external HDD attached to my router. The reason I don't plug the external HDD to my laptop directly is I don't want to keep doing it every time I want to access my photos, and my laptop only has limited disk capacity since it's an SSD.

Unavailable mapped network drive hangs file explorer

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) and I have this problem from beginning.
I have mapped two network drives, one is my home NAS and second is shared network storage in our office.
When I open some application which is loading directories (XnView for example) in my computer OR I want open some file in any application
OR, especially, I want to save some new document by "Save as" button (in Notepad, MS Word for example), application hangs for about 30 seconds and I can not work with it. Other applications are working fine during this freeze.
The problem occurs when I am at home and the network storage in office is not available (or I am in the office and home NAS is not available of course), but Windows
doesn't show unavailable drive as disconnected.
When I connect my computer to the office VPN (and both network storages are available) OR I unmap unavailable network drive, everything works perfectly... but it is really not comfortable.
I have tried stop Indexing and disable Windows Defender as I read on some forums but without any solution.
Any hints how to solve this issue?

This isn't one I've seen personally, and I can really test whether this would work, however...
On each of your network drives, try selecting something (doesn't matter what, but probably something small is better), right clicking on the folder and selecting "Always available offline" so your machine maintains a local copy of that information.
My logic being, by doing that on both network drives, each of them contains some information which is available regardless of the resource itself being visible. In this situation Windows will continue to show those network drives as available and accessible,
even if you're no longer connected to either network. Since those folders are available the network drives will also be available, and if you're no connected to the resource itself, Windows will still see that drive as connected, will still be able to list
it, and the apps you're seeing this issue with should no longer have any problems (provided they're not trying to access information on one of those drives that isn't available obviously!).

Networked drive and files

At work i have the common scenario, my "personality" and documents are all stored on a network drive. I.e. everything i do is off of the network drive. Its backed up. I'm trying to figure out what the best way is to do things. symbolic link v. rsync (etc.) backup.
The goal is to have the documents be able to be spotlighted, but yet backed up. Problem, documents have to be local to be spotlighted in SL or anything else and they are not backed up on my mac, only on network drive. Thoughts. Right now rsync seems to work best (as opposed to symbolic linking) but is kinda primitive. Essentially, all of my data is just backed up once a day to the network drive with a rsync script. That way if i'm off site i can access the files from another computer on the network and just email myself the updated doc and save it on the local machine and have it backed up at the end of the day. Primitive, yes, works barely. Thoughts?

Chronosync might be a good solution for you instead of rsync. It is very flexible and has its own
built in backup scheduler. It can configured just about any way you can dream up.

I have three sites I work on but Dreamweaver insists on
displaying the 16 local and network drives my PC has access to. All
I want to see is my three websites. I thought I had managed this in
DW* but can't for the life of me remember how - must be my age! If
anyone can jog my memory I'd be very grateful.

Surface Drive hidden files

The hard drive on the surface RT is full despite my best efforts to delete any large files. I then used the search function to search by file size and found there to be video files and lots of other types of files hidden on my C drive under the file directory

I ran windows defender and that found nothing as usual as well as deleting all cache, history and temporary files in internet explorer however when I searched again these files remained. Each file also seems to be hidden as when I go back I can not find the
file name to click into. Obviously I could delete the files but I feel that won't solve much. I also tried to download other malware and virus software but the RT will not let me install these apps. Thanks for your help

Task scheduler calling a mapped network drive - excel file

Server 2008 R2 Standard
User contacted me indicating that a task that is scheduled to run on their server is not working properly. Supposedly it has run in the past.
Under the User account on the server they have a mapped drive K: that maps to
\\server\directory, it is a persistent map.
They stayed logged into the RDP session and just X out and leave it running.
The XML of the job is below but the basics are they are calling an excel spreadsheet configured with a Macro from the mapped drive.
The job is set to run whether user is logged on or not and run with highest privildeges.
The job action is to run the excel file through the mapping so Action: Start Program Details: "K:\SQM....name.xls"
WE ARE GETTING ERROR: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
I'm being told can't run through UNC path as the marco writes alot of information to the K drive?
Ideas?

@Feng - the drive mapping is accessible via Explorer and am able to go to go to UNC path from start menu. From both methods I can double click on the .xls and launch the excel file with the macro.
@MyousufAli - The user account is part of the local Administrator group, the Run with highest privledges is check, the user who is set with permission on the Task has effective permissions of Full Control down the directory structure that is K. Also I'm
logged into the server where the task is run as the said user when I did the checking for @Feng.

Error saving Project 2010 files to network drive - doesn't see network drive

ANSWERED (11 April 2014):
So it seems the resolution to this is to simply create a new share with a different name. I used the existing folder (to retain NTFS permissions) and just select to Add a new Share (applying the same Share permissions as the non working Shares).
Deploying this new Share via Group Policy as a test resulted in staff being able to open files from Windows Search, save files through MS Project and the Share being accessible through browsing SMB.
All problems resolved by using a new share name for the existing folder. Seems to be a corruption in the namespace.
Note: I had previously deleted the share and recreated it. I had removed all NTFS permissions and readded (through both the GUI and icacls). This didn't make a difference.
Only changing the name of the share fixed the problem.

It seems some staff on some computers are having problems saving MS Project files to the network. This is only since an upgrade to SBS2011 (from SBS2003). The only difference now, is that network drives are mapped via group policy rather than a 'net
use' script.
This is affecting users on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, with either MS Project 2007 or 2010. The users have full change access to the folders and can create new files and modifying existing files, just not a MS Project file. Other file tyes, e.g
Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, Adobe .pdf files, all work fine. These files can be opened, edited and saved normally without problem.
To replicate this:
The user opens an existing file or creates a new file on the network folder (either through Windows Explorer or MS Project). They then click File > Save in MS Project and receive the following error (see pic below):
An interesting symptom of this is that if you select File > Save As in MS Project, the Sae As dialog box doesn't remeber the path location of the network drive. MS Project instead prompts to save the file in the local users documents folder (see pic below):
If they browse back to the original folder where the file was saved and choose to save it there, they are of course, prompted to overwrite the existing file and they can save the file. But the same thing happens every time they open the file.
It seems the problem is that Project isn't seeing the path of the file or that the network drive is attached.
If a user closes the file without saving it, they are prompted to save the file and the prompt shows the drive path:
Do you want to save changes to "N:\... Projects\Active Projects\CC...\F4 Project Plan File\004 Programme\test project file.mpp"?
But choosing to save the file gives them the same result as Save As, they are prompted for a new location as if the original file location doesn't exist.
I have disconnected the mapped drive and connected it again using net use but get the same error.
I have reinstalled MS Project 201, installed Project 2010 SP2 and installed Windows updates and it does the same thing, exactly the same symptoms.
Further, if the user opens a file from the network drive, the file shows in the Project recent files list. If they try to open the file from the recent files list in project they get the following error:
"Project cannot open the file.
-Check that the file name and path are correct.
-Check that the file format is recognized by Project.
Project files saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project 98 can't be opened...."
This is a test file that I created on the user's computer and network drive, This is being opened with the same version it was created in. If I browse to the folder in Windows Explorer I can open the file. Of course, I then can't save the file (I still get
the original error). I'm logged on with Domain Admin privileges.

I've downloaded my TechNet version of he software and installed it with Sp2 and Windows updates and it does the same thing. This also happens on the Remote Desktop server (Server 2008 R2) using MS Project 2007.

Case 1
This error message appears when the document is open on two or more computers that are running different operating platforms. For example,
if the document is open on a Macintosh computer and you open it on a second computer running Windows or Windows NT, the error occurs when either user tries to save the document.
This problem stems from a difference between the ways Macintosh OLE and Windows OLE open files. As a result, you cannot save a file on two different operating platforms at the same time.
Case 2
This error occurs in Word 97 for Windows if you save to a MAPROOT type network drive connection on a NetWare server where spaces exist in
the file or folder name.
Case 3
This problem may occur if an anti-virus program running on a network has the ability to scan for macro viruses in documents in shared network
folders.
For example, if you have the following:
a shared folder on a network server
-and-
an anti-virus program is running on the network server that is set to monitor the shared folder,
when you attempt to save a document (across the network) to the shared folder, the anti-virus checker may cause the error to occur.
Case 4
This problem may occur on Novell networks when the AutoRecover files path is either blank or set to a network drive.
According each, please try the following workaround:

LR5.2 Destroys raw-files if working with network drives

I have a serious bug with LR5.2: It destroys my raw files CR2 (Canon ESO 60d) if I work with my local network drive. All my pictures are stored on this network drive. If I try to import from sd card or local drive new pictures and copy/move them via import or synchornize to my network drive the files are corrupted. I also can't open them with other sw-programms like DPP from Canon. The original files on the sd card are okay. Even if I copy the files via explorer to the network drive I can open them with for ex. DPP, but after I imported them into LR5.2 the files are corrupted and I can't open them with DPP again.

Lr doesn't write CR2 files, except if moving/copying, and then only via call to operating system. If your raw files are going bad, you probably have a system/hardware problem.

Help getting accurate metadata for files on network drives

I need to read 1000's of very small files that are addressable through the file system API (File class). The location of the files may be a local drive or via a Windows shared drive. When the files are on a remote system, the files may actually be changed by a process running on that remote system. Much of the time, I can actually cache the information needed from the files, but if the file changes or is deleted then I have to detect the change and reload or delete from my in memory cache. Everything works great when on a local drive, but the File API doesn't work when on a Windows shared network drive.
Basically, File.lastModified(), File.exists(), File.canRead(), File.isFile() etc, all return inaccurate results when the base path is on a mapped network drive, the files are changed by a remote process, and then are immediately accessed by my Java process.
For example,

<li> my program loaded and cached it
<li> then a remote process changes the file
<li> when I call file.lastModified() immediately following the change, it will report the old lastModified date.
So, the net result is that I can't detect the change and end up serving up old data. This is even worse when the file is deleted, but Java File.exists() reports true. If I put in an artificial wait using Thread.sleep() in a while loop, then eventually the correct lastModified and exists will be reported. However, this doesn't help.
I've tried a lot of different ways to try to get Java to report the correct info. So far, the only reliable way is to try to open the file and read the first byte, catching an exception if necessary. This seems to then force the file data to be updated and Java will then correctly report the lastModified date (or throw an exception if it no longer exists). However, attempting to open the IO to the file and reading a single byte pretty much invalidates any reason to cache the data in the files because most of the overhead is in opening and closing the streams.
Is there any way to force Java or Windows to update the information about a file? It seems to me that this probably has to do with Windows caching shared drive file information and giving Java bad data, but it would be really nice to be able to force a refresh a file info.

That will be the network file system. Nothing Java can do about it. Java neither knows nor cares. You are at the mercy of what the networked file system does. And that's why it's a very bad design. Networked file systems are for users, not for applications.
So, the net result is that I can't detect the change and end up serving up old data.Only because you cached it, which is why that's a bad idea. If you hadn't cached it you would have had to read the file again and you would have got the current data. And it would have been slow, because networked file systems are slow, which is why that's a bad idea.
Basically you are trying to use a remote file system as though it was a transactional database: it isn't, so you are trying to write more stuff in front of it to make it better; instead you are making it worse.
What you should be doing is using a transactional database as a transactional database.

Network Drives and Bugs - A Word of Caution

A couple of weeks ago I replaced my trusty Buffalo 802.11b/g wireless router with an AirPort Extreme Base Station so that I could set up a network drive using a 500GB USB hard drive attached to the AEBS, which was considerably less expensive than buying a dedicated network drive/file server appliance.
Yesterday my Apple TV lost its network connection for no apparent reason and I was unable to reconnect it. After resetting both the Apple TV and the AEBS I still could not establish a connection due to an "incorrect password" that was not incorrect. After re-entering the same password again into the AEBS and then the Apple TV I could finally reconnect. I would think that this problem would be attributed to a software bug in either the AEBS or the Apple TV.
During the re-syncing process I started getting error messages that iTunes could not find many of my files. It turns out that iTunes could only find files that were imported into it after I moved the library to the network drive. Files that had been imported prior to the network drive had to re-imported back into iTunes before it would recognize the correct file path for these files even though the correct file path to the network drive was specified in the iTunes Preferences.
It appears that iTunes was not automatically checking the library path specified in the Preferences settings for the files it couldn't find, possibly the result of another bug in iTunes.

actually on the drive and the specified file path is
correct.
The file path specified in Preferences > Advanced > General just specifies where the iTunes Music Folder is located, not the path to any particular media file, which could be anywhere. Changing this preference affects all future files imported into the Music Folder but not those already in the iTunes library. IOW, this is more like a default location than a global file path.
The library file is a database stored on the local drive in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library. It contains the iTunes metadata reference record for each media file, among other things. There is also an iTunes Music Library.xml file in the ~/Music/iTunes/ folder, used by other applications. (See What are the iTunes library files? for more about this.)
The content of these files is maintained by the iTunes app, not the file system. So if you manually move your iTunes Music Folder to another location (IOW, not through the application), the database may not be updated properly, leading to error messages because the file path info may be wrong.
To avoid this, you should follow the procedure described in iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Music folder or iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Music folder.
I believe ... the lost files in iTunes may be the
result of software bugs in iTunes, Apple TV
and/or AirPort Extreme.
For this much at least, the "bug" is in your expectation of what setting the iTunes preference does, not in the operation of the application itself. It may or may not have anything to do with your other problems, of course.

Search network directory for file JS CS3

I need to enhance a javascript that I created a while back, by adding the functionality to search a network drive for files.
I have been able to test for file exists on one of the volumes, but the other volume hasn't got the same stucture and needs a recursive search that drills down directories. and then back out to start the next set of folders.
Has anyone had call to do this themselves, and if so, could you please point me in the right direction?

Every time I searched I didn't include 'recursive' and ended up with loads of discussions to choose from - yet I used the word in my question. I'm obviously working too hard!

How to remove my ex-company's server? Their IT set up hidden files to access computer anytime. I went thru all the Network

I worked for a company from my home. They had an IT company that would maintain ecverything thru the network and wirelessly.
I no longer work for the company but was able to keep the computer. Since I've left the company I have noticed they have accessed the computer. I have gone through all the steps to change the network, account settings, etc. But still - when I try to Update the Software I get an error message that I cannot access company.server. I don't want to access company.server. I want to wipe away them and their access to the computer. How can I find their hidden Network setup. I have all hidden files showing nd can't find it. Help. I want to use this computer but can't till I get those jerks' nose out! Thanks, Carole

I was afraid you were going to say that.
My desktop is 4-5 years old.
I've been messing with backing up programs onto my 200GB backup drive all evening.
I'm glad I only did work stuff on that computer and very little personal stuff.
I'll go check my disks, but they are very old. I'll have a ton of software updating on all the applications.
Would it work if I -
1st: boot-up from the original disc
2nd: Pull all files from the desktop computer onto my backup drive;
3rd: After I wipe out the computer just drag all the files and apps back upto the computer?
Or do I HAVE to reinstall all apps? Having old disks that will then need to be updated is not very fun.

Hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 / Lion Problem

Updated to Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion and got this "problem":
The hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 (unlike in 10.6 Snow Leopard).
Normally these network drives are hidden (in Finder and other Apps) - but Adobe Bridge CS5 is showing them, despite "show hidden files" is unchecked in Adobe Bridge.
Not a dramatic "bug", but it also shouldn't be a big problem for Adobe Bridge engineers to solve this. My first question to the Adobe Support was answered like: "we don't know what Apple did change, so we cannot do anything". Hmmm, are you serious?
I tried to resolve that problem by myself but failed. So, if an Adobe engineer is reading this post: perhaps Adobe Bridge is ignoring the automounter master map (that was my approach to resolve it):

You cannot do anything to these folders, so it is not a serious issue, but, I mean, did someone at Adobe check compatibiliy with 10.7 and ignored this issue? If so, are there an other issues ignored?
But I guess, the compatibilty update for Bridge CS5 for Lion is Bridge CS6 - to be fair: I also have to say, that in general Bridge is running okay on Mac OS X 10.7.2 (but could be better, as always;)

thanks for your answer! Yes you' re right, I forgot to mention that ... before I posted here, I sent a bug report via the Apple Bug Report webpage about the issue ... of course, here are 2 parties involved.
I had a similiar problem once and I got a meesage back from Apple: "that it is a 3rd party problem, sorry" (it was about color management).
I am just a user and I often feel very strange about Apple's (topsecret) communication behaviour ... Whatever, what do I know about software engineering? - Right.
Maybe someone on this forum has an idea, because I'm afraid, thus it is not a serious bug, no one would take care about it in the next time (during my research I found an older post here on the forum about the same problem ...).
