Hiding Computes Behind Router

Hi All! I could use some help configuring my network. I am sharing a DSL connection among four computers; three through an ethernet hub, plus a laptop wirelessly using an Airport Express in bridge mode — so the DSL modem is providing all IP addresses through DHCP using the 192.168.2.X addressing I want to provide public wireless access to the Internet using a BEFW11S4. But I do not want the public to be able to see my other computers. I am currently doing this successfully with a second Airport Extreme not in bridge mode by having it distribute addresses using 10.0.1.X. Users can use the Internet but cannot see my computers on the 192.168.2.X network. When I try this with the BEFW11S4, using 10.0.1.X (or a variety of other options) my computers are visible. I'm not sure why. I would like to fix this. I have use for the Airport Express elsewhere. Appreciate any advice. Thanks, Greg

You can change the Ip address for the Router to 10.10.10.1 .... so that it will be visible to other computers is network ....

  • How to access more than one client computer behind router

    I am new to ARD and have successfully logged on to a client machine at the office. I would like to access another machine behind my router. I am using pors 3283 and 5900 to access initial computer which works find. Can it be done with another computer. I have a fixed IP and run an ethernet network. Not sure what else I can tell you. Hope somebody can help?

    If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, as of today you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
    ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
    Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number for a VNC client
    to connect.
    The only other options available now are: 1) to run the ARD administrator on a workstation on the network, and then take control of that system from outside, either via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a virtual private network (VPN) so that when you connect from outside, your admin system is officially part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.

  • RMI Server behind Router: How to set the right IP?

    Hi, I am having trouble with the Server of an RMI application, the set up is this:
    1. The server is not always running on the same host: it may be a computer with a publicly visible and unique IP, or it may be under a computer behind a router.
    2 . The user that runs the server may not know how to get his IP in the router environment.
    3. The user that runs the server knows sh*t about rmiregistry or how to set a Property to the java interpreter (for example: -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=<host>).
    4. The Server code is this:
    * Represents the Server to the Domination app (including the chat plugin).
    public class Server {
         private static final int PORT_NUM = 1099;
         private static final String CHAT = "chat";
         private static final String DOMINATION_FACTORY = "Domination";
          * Sets the Chat and Application Servers.
          * @param args
          *            Never used.
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try {
                   Registry registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(PORT_NUM);
                   Chat chatObject = new ChatImpl();
                   UnicastRemoteObject.unexportObject(chatObject, true);
                   UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(chatObject, PORT_NUM);
                   registry.rebind(CHAT, chatObject);
                   System.out.println("Chat ready...");
                   Fabrica fabricaObject = new FabricaImpl();
                   UnicastRemoteObject.unexportObject(fabricaObject, true);
                   UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(fabricaObject, PORT_NUM);
                   registry.rebind(DOMINATION_FACTORY, fabricaObject);
                            System.out.println("Domination Factory ready...");
                   System.out.println("All systems up and running");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   e.printStackTrace();
                   System.exit(1);
    }I wrote the code that way (and not using Naming.rebing("//" + host_name + "/Service", serviceObject)) so the server user won't need to run the rmiregistry (In fact, the Server is deployed via a jar file, so just a happy double-click to the jar will do the work)...
    OK, then the problem is this: The client is always having "connection refused" Exceptions while the server is behind a router and not in the same network of the client.
    The IP that is shown in the exception is always the inner IP of the host (or 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x or whatever it may be). So it seems that the registry is always choosing that IP and not the router's.
    I need to know if there is a way to rewrite the Server code so the user just should do the same 'double-click' to run the server and not mess around "investigating" the outer IP. I read some of the RMI specs and it suggest to do IP Tunneling and some other techniques that I don't think may be appropiate to the nature of this "roaming server" application.

    Thanks, but that still doesn't do the work. As I stated in the post, not every user will know how to set java.rmi.server.hostname or even look for an outer IP... I was asking for an "automagical" way to code my server class so it could do some job to do the guessing.
    Even though... I tried both ways at home with the help of a friend as the client, and it seemed to work. The client connected to the server but it was kicked out in less than 30 seconds. Being specific, every client, the ones inside and the ones outside my network. As if the only right way was to let the JVM set the IP (but again, in that way the server is invisible to the clients outside the network).

  • Getting IP behind router

    Hello
    I am trying to get the ip of my machine which is behind a router, so InetAddress.getLocatHost() returns 127.0.0.1, and retreiving the network interfaces gives me my lan ip of 192.168.x.x. Is there anyway to get my actual ip?
    Thanks for any help its much appeciated

    Hi all,
    I am having a problem with online gaming! I am trying
    to direct connect from behind a router to another
    computer behind a router. My IP is an internal IP
    192.168.xx.xx therefore not global. How can I supply
    the other computer with an IP address in which they
    can use connect to my comp[uter or vice versa.
    Did you read the rest of this thread? If you want someone to connect to your computer in that situation, then your router has to have a public IP, and you have to set it up for some sort of NAT, such as port forwarding.

  • Computer to router constantly sending and receiving packets

    I have two separate computers, one wireless and one connected direct to my router. One running XP home and the other running XP pro, both will all current updates. Both computers running ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and Kaspersky antivirus and should be virus free. Both computers are constantly sending and receiving several packets to the router every second (even with internet unplugged, this is just computer to router traffic). It is svchost.exe that is doing the work. It is TCP traffic with around 200-7000 bytes of data. Sometimes when redoing the connection (power down router, unplug cable, ect…) it will quit doing it. I had the same issue with my past USRobotics router. What could be causing this? It is interfering with my ability to monitor my internet bandwidth speed and usage.

    Since no one has any idea, I did some things on my own. The first thing I did was to use my computers firewall to block the destination port to each router (they were both different). The second thing I did was to update my linksys router firmware with DD-WRT. That seems to have solved it for good, as I have disabled the the firewall blocks and all is good. Freeware hacks rule.

    Yeah, that one just don't cut the mustard.  Try "ddclient".  I started a thread a long time ago comparing different dyndns clients, and found "ddclient" had the richest feature set, including a lot of support for you router folk.
    Try this thread.

  • ServerSocket.. behind router...

    I wrote a peer-to-peer application once with some gaming interfaces for roleplaying online... It was not a major technical feat...
    Basically, it worked with a registry server that listened for connections, and helped facilitate connecting the clients to each other. This registry server published its current whereabouts on a static web server (cxtable.sourceforge.net, for the time being)... and then the rest happened without a relay.
    At the time, I was a dialup user... so it never occurred to me to figure out how to handle "behind-a-router" situations. Now I have a cable modem, and it is behind a router so the other machines in my network (sometimes my laptop so I can work from home) can have access as well..
    Naturally--this assigns a "192.168.1.x" type address....so now I am wondering.. is there a way to do this?
    I searched the forums, and of the 20 hits for "behind router" I got, the following 4 looked most directly related to my issue:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=191572
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=165384
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=503235
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=11&thread=530336
    Two of them look basically unanswered, and two of them answered with no resolution (and no Dukes even awarded for trying!)
    Is there a dynamic way to bind a ServerSocket when behind a router such that it could accept connections?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    And I imagine if I look hard enough, I'll find a way
    to determine my router's IP programatically..That may be tougher. I don't know of anything in
    java.net that will do that. (Doesn't mean it's not
    there though.)
    In Unix and DOS there are command line programs like
    ifconfig, ipconfig, and route that wil give you
    information that you might be able to parse. I think
    you want to look for default gateway.
    On the other hand, if your router is always connected,
    its IP address probably changes very infrequently, if
    at all, so finding that IP address programmatically
    may be more trouble than it's worth.My code has to assume that the IP address can change (it is a p2p-ish application..I use the term lightly--it is more of an "intranet over the net" type of p2p rather than a scalable N-node p2p.) regularly...and that I won't specifically know it.
    Ideally--the user wouldn't need to know his IP address to use the software... in the end.. it really is a nearing-on-orphan project... and I found someone who felt it mostly met his needs for something--a possible maintainer to hand it off to.
    It is actually my first project that taught me Java (years ago)... my second was a children's programming language(http://dustyscript.sourceforge.net)...
    I think the code for the p2p app((http://cxtable.sourceforge.net)) is terrible, and poorly documented, and probably the whole thing should be re-designed from the ground up... but it works for its purpose (Connecting multi-players to a chat-room with dice and other potential plugins so they can play an RPG {such as Dungeons and Dragons...etc}... but still do it as IF they were playing traditionally, sitting around a table)
    The key is that now most people have a cable modem-- it will most likely still work for them -- but those more advanced people with routers/etc .. might have issues--but then, that again says that if they have routers/etc...they probably know what their IP address is and could type it in..

  • Which Name Service for Solaris installation behind router?

    I want to install Solaris on my computer in a small home LAN behind a router.
    The Solaris computer is not part of a zone, a domain and there is no own DNS server in LAN.
    I want Solaris to get the DNS from router which in turn gets the DNS server assignments from network provider.
    This is similar to a Windows installation which gets the current DNS servers defintion from network provider at connection startup.
    Now what do I have to select during Solaris installation? See attached snapshot
    I guess LDAP, NIS and NIS+ are not suitable.
    Do I have to select "None"?
    Does DNS mean "own DNS server in LAN" or "DNS from router" (as intended)?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hello
    I don't know you home setup but in general you will have to use DCHP so solaris will get all info from the route the ip and dns etc..
    If you want to use a static ip you will have to config the DNS by hand.

  • Website blocked behind router

    There is a website that I was accessing just fine up until this Monday. Now all attempts at access to it time out. Pings of the site time out and a tracert gets to the hop right before the site and then it times out. This happens for any computer in my house. I'm using an E3000 router.
    If I connect a PC directly to my internet providers box, bypassing the router, I can get to the site just fine, I can ping it, and tracert successfully hops its way to it.
    I've rebooted the router and looked all through it but I can't find any reason why I can't get to this website while behind the router. I hadn't changed any setting on the router in months so I never suspected it was the problem until my ISP had me bypass it.
    Any ideas of what might be going on and how to fix it? I work from home and this site is one of my company's customers so I can't do any work on the site which is not good.
    JL

    Ping test the site directly connected and connected through the router. See if both pings are going to  the same IP Address.
    Also do tracert command to the website direct and through the router. Usually with this issue they take different routes to the website.
    Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Trying to acces printer on windows computer behind airport express and more

    Title din't let me put it all in. Heres my problem. I have a mac, mom has a pc. Used to both run on a wireless network was able to access her printer no problem. However, her wireless card or windows itself was garbage so I bought a wired d-link router for cheap and hard lined her in. I however plugged my airport express into the router so I could still get wireless. All is working. However, I am not able to access her computer files or printer anymore. So, because she is behind the router, I can't get it. I am able to put say her address in that the router gives, say 192.168.0.100. Still no help. Basically it used to be set up like this in my printer settings. smb://name-0ab6f1634:139/BrotherM . So if anyone has any idea how to help me with this, that would be awesome. Wasnt sure if I should post here or in the networking place.. Thanks

    I'm not there to see everything, but it sounds like you didn't set up the Airport Express correctly. Go into Airport Utility and uncheck/turn off "Distribute IP addresses." Now, your wireless computer(s) will get their IP address from the d-link and be a part of that network.

  • My girlfriends ex left this Mac computer behind on PURPOSE!  Can her ex still operate this computer?  I don't know the default keychain password or how to find it

    Ok...so I am REALLY new to this whole Mac thing and my girlfriend knows less than I do about computers and phones, etc.  but I have been using her Mac computer and thought how cool it was until I synced my iphone to it and all of her ex's apps went on my phone so then I tried to find out how to get her ex's name and info off the computer and realized that just because the log in name is my girlfriends name...the computers name and all HIDDEN passwords and HIDDEN dates of when things have been changed.
    Can this person have access to anything I have done on that computer?
    How do I find the default keychain login?
    How can I assure she cannot get any files or ANYTHING off this computer?
    My girlfriend doesn't really want to lose her files like photos and iTunes but I am assuming since my girlfriend wasn't really ever the one "truly" logging in....
    I don't know.
    Need help for dummies here!

    They were together living in this house for 7 years.  My girlfriend purchases the Mac.  Her girlfriend sets up the Mac.  They mutually break up and her girlfriend says "I put the computer in YOUR name" so don't worry... Go ahead and use it.  When I say she left it behind on purpose what I mean is the computer is in the ex's name bc she PUT it in her name ...like all the cloud stuff.  And sub accounts are in my gf's name...like ....user login.  But my gfs not really the administrator of this computer and her ex has 3 macs of her own that I (THINK) are attached to this "system".
    I am SO new at this that I JUST created an account on this website to try to get help.  I own a business and have been using this computer not knowing that my girlfriend isn't the one who set her own computer up.  I know nothing about a Mac.  I don't know if someone who has another Mac on the system can transfer files?  I have been logging onto the computer under my gf's user name and password just to access what in my mind is known as the regular Internet.  My gmail...my business email login...passwords...bank account, ect.
    I just want to ensure she can't access MY stuff.  I don't care about HER stuff!
    I'm not a hacker!  ****....I didn't even know how to open up a new tab on the freaking thing until just a few months ago!  Lol

  • Multiple Public IP's on one physical interface for devices behind Router.

    Hi guys, I am trying to find information on applying multiple IP addresses to a router
    basically one for the Router itself and then some for the devices behind the router, Which i am sure I need to apply some 1 to 1 NATs. I just do not know if i need to specify all the IP addresses on the main interface.
    Example being I have a router with WAN ip of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/25 , it only has 2 interface one for WAN one for LAN, i have a server I would like assigned its own public IP address.  but still on the same LAN network.
    Could someone help me out and point me in the right direction with a sample config

    I agree with the previous response that you need a static NAT to allow outside resources to initiate traffic to your server. You also will need NAT or PAT using the router interface address to allow the other hosts in your network to access outside.
    You do not need to configure any other of the addresses on the router interface other than the primary IP that you assign to the router interface. As long as the other addresses are used for NAT/PAT they are configured in the nat statements and not on the physical interface.

  • Wireless Computer, Wireless Router, Wireless Print Server

    I am having difficulty with a specific configuration trying to print wirelessly.
    I have no problem printing from my iBook G4, Power Mac Dual G4 750, Dell Notebook, or Compaq Presario Desktop using this configuration: Linksys Wireless-G router and Linksys Wireless-G Print Server.
    As long as the Print Server is connected to the Router via an ethernet cable, the network works fine - I can print from any computer.
    The problem I am encountering comes from the fact that I now want to use the Print Server with another printer that is a seperate room from the router (I don't want to connect it with an ethernet cable). This shouldn't be a problem since it's a wireless print server.
    I had always used a static IP to access and configure the router, but now that I have removed the ethernet connection I can't log in. In fact, when it is plugged into a different port on the router (via ethernet) I can't log into it either. When I reconnect it the original way, it is not problem.
    Running the original install software on my PCs doesn't help either.
    How can I make this work?
    Can my wireless computers (e.g. iBook with Airport Extreme wireless card) talk directly to the Print Server, or does it talk to the Print Server via the wireless router?
    I don't have an Airport base.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I do not think I can help you with your question however I have the same router and print server and I too have never been able to get the print server to work wirelessly. It's a real kick in the head too because the linksys tech nubs just talk you around in a circle saying that the deivce is wireless but that you have to use the wire. I don't know maybe its me...
    Nonetheless I now have a mac laptop that works the the router but I can not get the powerbook to connect the the print server. I would be interested to know how you go your mac to work with you first printer.

  • Advice on Fixing/Setting Up Mac Server behind Router

    I would like advice on how to setup/fix a Mac Snow Leopard (10.6.8) server running on an Xserve. The server is only used to to host network accounts / act as a remote drive for a Mac-based laboratory. It is not a mail server, web server, etc. The goal is to enable (i.e., force) students to keep all of their documents on the server while accessing them easily from any computer, ideally from any point in the world.
    The current setup is:
    Linksys router (192.168.1.1) connects WAN (address WWW.WW.WWW.WWW)  to LAN with both DMZ and local DNS pointing to server address (192.168.1.55)
    Snow leopard server at 192.168.1.55
    Client macs and pcs with various local addresses 192.168.1.XXX
    From the LAN side, this setup works well in that all of the client Macs (from PowerPCs running 10.5 to brand new machines running 10.8.4) have no problem accessing their network accounts. They can also access the outside world seamlessly. The server can be administered using Screen Sharing from client machines running recent versions of Mac OS (e.g., 10.8.4)
    From WAN side, some things work but others don't:
              – Macs can access the server using AFP://WWW.WW.WWW.WWW, although VPN
                        needs to be running if we are off-campus
              – Macs CANNOT login to the Network Account Server when outside the LAN
                         If I go to "Users & Groups", "Login Options" and enter the server address
                        WWW.WW.WWW.WWW, I get unable to add server  with a "Connection
                        failed to the directory server (2100) error message
              – I can no longer login to the server using Screen Sharing. (This worked a few months ago,
                        so I am not sure why this is failing.)
              – I worry that opening a DMZ to the server is unnecessary from a security standpoint, and
                        I would be better with port forwarding specific ports (but which ones?)
    I am open to new configurations if necessary, but I suspect this is something straightforward. I am also happy to RTFM for either the server or the router, but I'd like some guidance as to what is feasible/preferred. Specifically, I would particularly like students to be able to login to the Network Account Server from outside the LAN.
    The server does not do anything else (e.g., mail, web hosting).
    Although we do have an IT support group in-house, their opinion seems to be that computers are security risks that should not fall into the hands of users. The mere mention of Apple products sets off a rant.
    Thank you for your advice and suggestions.

    I usually use either telnet (non-SSL/TLS ports) or openssl s_client (SSL/TLS ports) or maybe nc (for scanning ranges of TCP and UDP ports) to check access to specific ports from the command line, though it's very simple to run a port scan via Network Utility for this case.  Launch that remotely, and see what your client can see.
    Here is a list of the ports used by Apple (TS1629)   For Open Directory, you'll need at least TCP 389 or preferably 636 punched through your gateway and your local firewall, if you're not VPN'ing in.   If you're using your own DNS, you'll need TCP port 53 open (and this is mildly hazardous to your bandwidth, as more than a few folks are using DNS servers as part of DDoS attacks; they'll spoof queries and cause your DNS servers to send a reply at somebody else as part of the DDoS.  The DNS servers really need to be locked down against this dreck.)
    You may also need to aim your client's DNS explicitly at your own DNS server, if you're using a private domain and a private IP address space; if your servers don't have public IP addresses and public names.
    Personally, I generally wouldn't expose the Open Directory ports to the 'net, or most anything else for that matter.   I'd usually VPN into the network, and "DMZ" the web-facing stuff where I can.  Too much weird cruft is hitting the firewalls I'm monitoring, undoubtedly looking for weaknesses and vulnerabilities.  Using the VPN services isn't a panacea, but does mean your traffic is hidden from most monitoring, your servers' ports and services are relatively protected, your DNS services are your own, and your exposure is largely limited to the VPN server access.
    For the remote clients, I'd use Portable Home Directory for the wandering devices, or straight OD via VPN.

  • Computer detects router but won't connect online - help

    I came home from work and all of the sudden my computer wouldn't connect at all to anything. We have another computer on the network which I'm using to send this message and it works fine, but mine won't connect. It detects the router and everything is connected- all the numbers come up in the Network preferences like it always does...IP, ethernet, etc., but nothing will connect to the internet or AIM. Anybody know what the problem might be? Can my ethernet card be busted, or disconnected or anything that would cause the computer to locate the router but not actually connect? Any help is appreciated- thanks.

    I have a similar problem. Sometimes I get a brief connection, but even then it is extremely slow and I get time out errors.
