High quality output

Hello Logic forum members,
I'm not an expert in sound editing nor in music creation, but I do have a question to ask to this forum that only you can answer in my opinion. Hope this is not inappropriate in this forum. My problem is this:
I like listening to classical music. I owned a good quality HiFi music system (Musical Fidelity Xcan v3, Sennheiser 650, Denon CD-player 1550-AR for those who are interested). A couple of weeks ago the Denon gave up on me and I am now faced with the decision of either buying a new CD-player... or listen to the music through iTunes and my G5. As I work 90% of my time, this makes a lot of sense to me.
The only thing is that I don't know how to connect the Xcan v3 to the G5 except through the analog mini-jack of the G5. I can't imagine this will give me the best sound quality. And so I turn to you, music and sound experts in the hopes that you will be willing and able to give me some advice.
Can the G5 be used as a high-quality music output system? Can I keep using the Xcan v3? Should I buy a DAC and if so, which do you recommend? Is a connection through the optical output better, or not necessarily so?
Or should I just buy another CD-player (I have my eyes set on a Marantz SA7001 KI, but that one costs 900 Euros and I also would like to buy a new Mac Pro ASAP .
Anyway, any advice is welcome.

M-audio audiophile is a starting point but you would need to do some research. hopefully someone else will have some suggestions.

Basic questions about high-quality output and PDFs

I do volunteer work in a non-profit that interfaces with local county government. We've been discussing a project to produce an atlas-type information as a service to the residents. The maps would be rendered by the GIS software the county uses (ESRI's Arc suite). The question is what file format should we ask for given the high-quality print and plot output we have in mind and our desire to add some simple vector markup in some cases to the maps. The markup, when used, would be simple circles, rectangles, arrows or text.
Our idea is the do most of the printing and plotting ourselves (we'd use something like a local Kinkos). This allows is to control paper sizes. In addition, we might want to crop the map and upscale a bit so we need to be careful of data density (dpi). The question is what file format do we request from the county?
Obviously we can ask for PDFs but, as a novice with that output, I don't fully understand 1) its Tools capability (but I am learning about it) and 2) how to control data density.
Since I think its best to envision a PDF as a "box" for other data, is the quality of the output going to be determined by the data density of the object inside the PDF?
I know I may not be very clear so please help me get clear on the question if I haven't expressed it well here.
BTW, I know I can place a PDF into an AI object and then add the vector stuff if needed, but I don't know from a workflow perspective if that's the best way to assure hight quality output.

P.S. We may end up with GIS viewing software as we move forward (ESRI has a grant program for non-profits). All this would mean would be we would be the ones making the decision about output format but the question on workflow would still remain.

No, so no limits to functionality.

Encore High Quality Output

I recently switched from ProShow Gold to Encore for a number of reasons, so I am still getting used to the software. Overall they seem similar, but I am unable to get a high resolution output of my slideshow in Encore. (I can’t use Blue Ray) I am trying to get a 1080 with 58 fps and resolution well over 1000x700. The help books say change transcode settings, but they are not active and don’t seem to go above 29fps, even if active.
Any guidance?

As Stanley says, with DVD-Video, you are limited to 720 x 480 (NTSC), or 720 x 576 (PAL), and may only have Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9.
To get higher resolution, you MUST go to a BD Project. For the allowable resolutions and detials for BD, see this FAQ Entry.

Can Flex make a Design Tool with a quality output file?

Hi there,
I have a team of developers working on a web-based design tool for a large-format print shop. They built the prototype on a Flex platform and used ImageMagick to handle text and image effects.
Unfortunately, ImageMagick cannot produce the quality of output file we need for our products (prints up to 3 ft by 6 ft / 1m x 2m). It rasterizes all of the design objects, including text and vector clipart.
Is it possible for Flex to handle all of these elements (object rotation, scale changes, etc.) and output a final design to high quality PDF or AI files without ImageMagick?
I'm just not sure if my developers are missing something or if they're just not communicating the technical challenges involved in creating such large, high quality output files for a custom, web-based application.

I'm still not sure I understand what you need. Sounds like the image map is the same for all the pages, but the image itself is different, although the images are the same size on each page. Is that it?
In that case, you could do this in a number of ways, but the best might be -
Make the page have a transparent PNG/GIF image the same size as the map that has the 5 mapped areas defined on it. Make the container for that image have a CSS BACKGROUND image that is the actual map. Specify this CSS background image's path in an embedded stylesheet in the editable region of the head of the page.
With this as the template, all you need to do on each page is to respecify the background image - since the embedded stylesheet is in an editable region that's do-able. In other words the TEMPLATE would be -

Help with getting high quality DVDs from AVCHD footage

I know enough about video editing with PE7 to be dangerous, and was hoping someone could help me out.
My question is regarding getting the highest quality standard DVD from AVCHD footage. I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder recording in AVCHD. I am editing footage natively in AVCHD with PE7 on a quad core system. No problem with that. However, when I export to standard DVD the quality of the video goes down drastically. (Yes, I know burning to Blu-ray would give me higher quality, but I am giving this DVD to a friend who doesn't have Blu-ray).
So far I have tried starting my project in both HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
General
Editing mode: HDV 1080i
Timebase: 29.97 fps
Video Settings
Frame size: 1440h 1080v (1.333)
Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
and Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
General
Editing mode: HD 1080i
Timebase: 29.97 fps
Video Settings
Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.000)
Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
But I see no discernable difference in the quality of my output onto DVD.
This is where my knowledge is lacking...how can I get the best quality output from my AVCHD onto a standard DVD? Is there some format I can convert to first, and then burn to DVD? Also, I am willing to break the footage into a couple of DVDs to improve the quality, but I don't know how or what to do for that.
My footage looks REALLY great when viewing from the HDR-SR12 direct to HD TV with HDMI cable, but not very good on the DVD. My footage is of a ballet recital, and I lose definition in the faces, costumes, etc on the DVD output.

This may be a year late, but as I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem for the last 48 hours I finally did find somewhat of a work around, but it requires Adobe PP CS4.2.
There is a plug-in here:

Which will actually output your edit as an AVCHD file. You can then burn this straight to an AVCHD using Nero 9 and keep the highquality level of your clips and not need Blu-Ray. The DVD player will need to be AVCHD capable, but I just bought one of those for $40 as compared to the $200+ of most Blu-Ray players.

How can I replace one low quality source with another high quality one ?

Am I really this dumb or is it really this hard ?
I have one timeline / project / edit that essentially references one long source clip / event / file.
I have a newer higher quality transcoded version of the same source and want to replace the original lower quality version and end up with the same edited result just with better quality images !?
It's the same frame rate and image dimensions but "relink" tells me the new file is not "similar" enough and won't do it !
Why is this so hard ? Is there a way to export a good old fashioned edl and then just reconform using the new source ?
What if I wanted to to replace low res offline footage with finished colour-corrected material and output a finished master - would that be this clueless as well ?
Please let me know the problem is between the chair and the keyboard - not between the hard disk and the power cord !

Guessing that when you created the higher quality media, it was done outside of FCP and probably changed some important metadata that the app is looking for. Or perhaps there is a difference between the original audio and the new audio.
Anyway, Luis' advice about the replace edit seems like the easiest solution.

The usual way to do offline online is within FCP – creating the proxies and then using Preferences to switch back to and from.
If you sent it out for grading, the Relink should work fine. If you haven't seen this kb doc, it's worth reviewing.

Low quality DVD outcome.. need help for high quality result ASAP!

Hi every 1,
(This is my first post, as I only got my iMac 2 weeks ago.. so please be gentle with me :P )
I have just been asked to turn a Microsoft powerpoint (PPT) into a DVD for "induction training video" purposes with voice overs and backing music. I have a professional music studio so providing high quality audio is fine, but trying to turn the power point into a high quality DVD file is my problem. This powerpoint has timing transitions (fade ins etc) for the timing of voice gaps. When using Microsoft PPT, you can turn the PPT into a Quicktime file which I was going to drop into iMoive then add the music and voiceovers.. this is when my problems started. Microsofts powerpoint doesn't add the transtiions and effect into render Quicktime movie, so I thought as my new iMac has iWork (KEYNOTE) I'd give it a try and to my surprise it all worked and the final mpeg4 quicktime movie result work great _when you look at it on the MAC_.
1) Problem
I then exported the file into iMovie and then my first Problem arose.... (grr). I movie lost it's sharpness and the images started to have pixelation.. that seemed to pulse in 1 seconds gaps.
I hope this was just an issue with the iMovie preview window and thought once I put it into iDVD and burnt it... the final result may be fine.. but I was wrong and the quality was crap... with the pixelation still there.
2) Problem
The other problem that came up was the about 25% of the edge of the total screen was cutoff. When i did the original file, I choose 4:3 ratio, and watched it on this..so where did the image size go wrong.. I also choose the "high quality" Quicktime file, but didn't go into the settings in the iMovie in the export section (which I should off), but after check the compression type was H.264.. and I also didn't change any settings in the 'export file' section in KEYNOTE.. this is where I think I must have gone wrong..
So in closing. my questions is:
-What's the best way to turn a PPT into a _high quality file_ so it looks professional once it goes through iMovie and iDVD.. or
- Should I just redo the whole production using iMovie ( by re doing all the work eg wording, transistion inside iMovie seems like a lot of extra word ) and so not use the PPT at all... and if I do this, then
- What's sizes, and ratio and compressions should I use for 4:3 ratio TV purpose (eg. whats size should a background image be that I do inside Photoshop, so I can put the transition wording over the top, so I see it on the TV screen and the edge doesn't get cutoff etc.?
I was very impressed with Keynote and would be happy to use this for most of the production.. but am I banging my head againist a wall...re fixing quality problems when exporting files into... can someone shed some light on this for me?
Sorry this is such a big post.. but I thought if I gave you most of the background you would have to ask so many questions.

Thx so much for your help.. it's really appreciated. This is by far the best result quality wise, (but I really am a perfectionist and personally are still not overall happy with the final product) but if my client is happy.. then I will continue down this track for this job.

I find the images and wording lose their sharpness only after being imported into iMoive. I could still be probably enhance the quality level of the TIFF's once more, as I did the test slides in Keynote, then exported the 5 slides a individual as TIFFS out of Keynote, then imported the into QuickTime Pro as you suggested then followed your instructions all the way to the final burning of the CD. I also tried doing this in Photoshop using your suggestion of 720x576 images (for PAL) .. pixel aspect ratio to ~1.094 so you can see the correct proportions for 4:3 video output. When creating the new slide in Photoshop there were a few extra settings other than the ones you gave me... _so I would real appreciate what every setting should be when creating the NEW TIFF file in Photoshop for PAL 4:3._ I noticed when I did this the image crispness on the fonts was shithouse pixelated and shadows, even while looking at it from inside Photoshop )
As I tried mutliple ways of importing into iMovie (yours being the best suggestion) I really believe when dragging a TIFF or movie turns to blur on the way into iMoive. You can see the image is blurred from that point on.... _do I need to buy final cut pro or express to get a better image quality result?_
I also tried iMoive7, which I found was great to use video editing wise, but Apples has definitely stuffed up there by not give users a 'time line' to work with in the Audio section... but everything else in the video area was great to use.., but in my situation trying to line up the narration to slide, while having also background music is now impossible sadly.
Also I really like the 3D transitions in KEYNOTE, plus iMovie 7.. do you know if there are available for HD6 or if there's a 3rd party company that has smilar versions

Need High quality fla to dvd playable file converter

Hi,
I'm making a project in swf which has got audio, video and images. I need to release this project in flash format and DVD format also.
Could anyone suggest me any High quality fla to dvd converter ? I just used trial versions of Moyea and few others before deciding to buy but they don't convert in high quality.
Even if they do, The file size becomes really too big. For instance just a 10 mb file becomes 4 gb.
Please suggest some good converters.

Did you render the Timeline fully?
Just so you'll know, the Viewer in FCE/FCP is just that; a viewer that shows the image at it's native resolution. The Canvas (and Firewire output) shows the image at the Sequence resolution - not the original resolution of the image.
If you're not going to be pushing in to (zooming in) the image, you should resize the images so they're close to your Sequence resolution. For example, if you're working in an NTSC DV Sequence, the resolution will be 720x480 (rectangular pixels). If your images are much larger than that, it may be part of the problem.

Audio synch off when exporting to HDTV 720p 29.97 high quality

we are exporting 720p native footage to the MPEG2 -> HDTV 720p 29.97 High Quality preset... the audio is off by six or so frames on export, which is noticable on talking heads. find out if anyone has found a fix for this in CS5?

Slideshow with high quality

I have a Photography Studio and I am trying to create client slideshows that display in very high quality. If I view the slideshow as created on iPhoto, the output is fantastic. If I burn a disc with iDVD (even on "Best Quality") the images as viewed from the DVD are not great. They become a little jaggy and some color shifting is evident. Not horrible, just not professional looking. My files are high quality .psd files. I have tried the process with high quality .jpg files, too.
Is the answer a PRO level DVD compression product? Voodoo????
I am at my wits end, but it was a short trip to get there.

Hi,
I understand you want to create a DVD, right? Before you know how to get the best quality, you must choose what software to use . You can build slideshows using just DVD Studio Pro (DVDSP Folrum) and/or in a video timeline with FinalCutPro (FCP Forum).
Each soft need a different approach ! You'll find a lot of posts with useful information in that forums and you can post your own when you decide what tool use for your project.
If you want to build simple slideshows with just a transition or no transition at all, where the people can choose next prev and so picture, you can use DVDSP.
If you want a more sofisticated presentation where you can control completly adnvanced trasitions and zoom/pan effects, you need to create it in a video application like FCP.
You posted this question in Compressor forum, what is a tool for transcoding your video footage to, i.e. MPEG2 files to include in DVDSP.
About quality, think that Standard Definition DVDs have a resolution of 720x480 pixels (NTSC) what probably is absolutly low resolution compared with your original pictures, but doesn't mean your pictures will look bad. Any comercial movie DVD you watch has that resolution ! The advantage is that every DVD player (computer and stan alone ones) will be able to play it.
When you mention the iPhoto slideshow, I think you mean a slideshow you played directly from your computer what is a completly different approach that DVD.
I just want to give a start point.

High Quality Wide Screen for YouTube - PLEASE HELP!

I am using a Panasonic PV-GS400 camera in wide-screen mode (this is another topic, but the camera still outputs 720 x 480 video, my understanding is that it is called "anamorphic wide screen"). I had figured out some settings to get my videos to appear in "High Quality" mode, wide screen (16:9) in YouTube, but the last couple of times I have tried these settings, they didn't work. Here's what I used:
- Windows Media 856 x 480 frame size
- Frame rate 29.97kbps
- Pixel aspect ratio - square (1.0)
- 2 encoding passes
I got the 856 x 480 ratio from another website. I don't really understand why the pixel aspect ratio needs to be square, but when I tried 16:9 aspect ratio, the video is letterboxed. I also don't understand the two different project modes for PE7 (when creating a new project you can choose the format 4:3 or 16:9). Maybe someone can explain how the widescreen project setting works. Perhaps it is something similar to how my camera does widescreen but the videos are still 720 x 480.
At any rate, if someone has settings that will reliably produce wide screen videos that appear in YouTube's "high quality" mode, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

Whch produces higher quality m2v- Quicktime or Compressor

I use Final Cut Express HD and export mpeg 2 videos for use in DVD Studio Pro. I have exported both - NTSC high quality, 2 pass vbr, 7 mps bitrate with both Compressor and Quicktime. Both files look good when previewed, yet my finished DVD video is not a clear. Is there a better way or different codec to use to get cleaner DVD end product?

We get the qt movies out of Compressor, the look great in DVDSP, but DVDSP won't even recognize them when they make the DVD.
Please clarify that statement. If you're using Compressor to encode MPEG2 files from your animations, you should end up with files that DVDSP will import. What presets are you using, if any?
We are using standard compressor settings for "MPEG2 60mintes" coming out Compressor.
I realize that DVDSP should support them, its that it won't that is causing the problems... :-\
And, if we allow the DVDSP to do the conversion to DVD itself, the results look VERY bad.
What are your encoding settings from within DVDSP?
Settings? We are going to DVD... thought that needed no settings to be set? (I could be wrong, I'm only the wingman on this one...)
and it seems to have something to do with the resolution of the files, going from 720x486 to 720x480... maybe...
Compressor handles that properly (crops 6 pixels rather than scaling). Not sure about encoding from within DVDSP.
Ah... that makes a little sense... if there is a difference between Compressor and DVDSP handle compression. Does it take 4 from the top, 2 from the bottom to allow the fields to be handled correctly?
We are making an animated 3d video, so there are no frames or codecs (DV) on the video... The workflow is then into After Effects, FCP and then DVDSP
Are you exporting Targa frames from Lightwave and then importing the sequence into AE? Once you export from AE you're certainly attaching a codec. Are you using Animation? Then, when working in FCP, what codec are you using? And are you working in 720x486?
Actually, we are exporting RPF (Rich Pixel Format) files from Lightwave3D, going into AFX, taking an animation codec QT into FCP, outputting both to MPEG2 and QT Animation format to DVDSP... then to cr*p DVD or nothing...

Exported videos not in high quality (Premiere Pro 2.0)

Hi, I'd like to ask for help. When i go to export a video in Premiere Pro 2.0 I get 2 options. Export with File>Export>Movie or File>Export>Adobe Media Encoder.
I have tested out a bunch of export settings and none of the settings (that I've tried) do make my video export in high quality.
Some settings make the video export in blurred low quality, some settings export the video in a way which my media players (VLC & Windows media player) have diffuculty playing back (slow/lagging, kind of like when a video editor has laggy preview) and some settings make the output video have weird lines on them & low quality.
So I want to ask:
1. Wich Project settings to I use for example a 720p video? (when i click "new project" I get a list of choiced and i think that the settings under "Adobe HDV" are the best (just like a friend of mine recommended) (http://s1162.photobucket.com/user/Doctorwhofan2012/media/NewProjectChoiceofSettings.png.ht ml)).
2. Wich method do I use when I want to export my video?

How to generate high quality PDFs?

Hello everyone,
Before I am told to use Google or search this forum for answers to my question, let me say that I have already done that. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution.
My problem: Microsoft Word produces low quality PDFs rendering my work useless. The PDF fonts look nothing like those in Word, nor does the spacing. The same problem appears when I try to archive a word file, which is shown perfectly in the Preview box, as a PDF file. This makes me think that the PDF generator engine in OS X has a problem.(?)
The only solution I have found: InDesign - the abundance of quality choices allows for a high quality PDF generation.
Now, is there really no other way to generate high quality PDFs from Microsoft Word or the Preview? Do I have to recreate all my files in InDesign to ensure a high quality PDF output?

you can use Photoshop 7 and PageMaker 7 (with two updates). Really no problem
in Windows XP. Probably a problem in newer operating systems.
Photoshop 7 is equipped with a very reasonable Color Management System.
For PageMaker you'll need a Postscript driver and Distiller. Please ask here:

This combination works perfectly, unless you want to handle so called live transparency.
Standard on/off transparency (PostScript) is fully supported.
Then it's possible to create perfect PDFs for inkjets, wide format inkjets, toner printers
and offset printing (PDF/X-1a for instance).
Almost all docs here were made with Photoshop CS2 (or older versions), PageMaker 7,
MathType and the PostScript editor PSAlter for technical illustrations:

Only recently I had converted everything into InDesign CS2 and newly converted to PDF.
I've installed as well CS6 (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), but mostly I'm using CS2.

IPhone High Quality Video Formats?

In our app we need to run a video that is high quality. Higher quality than the settings that quicktime pro presets output at. Does anyone know of what format settings I can use to export a high quality video to play?

I use 15 fps, because it looks better when used or converted into flash. If you just try uploading 30fps & 15 fps of the same file on youtube, you will see a change of the quality of the video.
I have never used the broadband settings for the FCP compressor .. But I will try it out.

Then we could have 1 post that answered all the questions of the specs of what people use & then people wouldn't have to search through everything..
