Higher resolution on external display?

Could I output a higher resolution (greater then 1024x768) on an external monitor with my iBook G4?

Thanks, Paul.
I am actually hoping to drive an external display at 1600x1200 or 1920x1080.
My ibook has an Radeon 9200 which I think is the same graphics processor as in the Mac mini, which supports 1920 x 1080.
So, I am hoping that I can turn off the built in display in my ibook and realize higher resolution on the external display.
I have limited access to a high rez external display so I apologize in advance if this is easy to figure out by trial and error.

  • How do I get a higher resolution on external displays using a HP Split 13-f010dx x2?

I just bought a HP Split 13-f010dx x2. I tried connecting my 27 inch Dell U2711, which has a max resolution of 2,560x1,440. I tried using just HDMI to HDMI, but that only allowed me to go up to 1920x1080, so I tried using a DVI-D adapter, and that only allows 1680 x 1050. Is there any way to get 2560x1440?

Hi hundredsofstuff, and welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you have a problem getting your Dell monitor to the correct resolution when connected to the HP Split 13-f010dx x2 PC.  I will try my best to help you with this issue.
Here is a document for Connecting a Monitor, Projector or TV (Windows 8), that explains the different connections and settings for an additional monitor.
I hope this information helps, please let me know how it goes.
Thank you and have a nice day!

  • Maximum Thunderbolt/VGA resolution for external displays?

    Hi there
Until recently, I've been using a Macbook Air Core 2 Duo with a MiniDisplayPort output. This is connected via the Apple MiniDisplayPort > VGA adaptor to an LG Flatron W2246 22" display, and running 1920x1080 quite happily.
I recently bought the Macbook Pro 15" quad core i7 with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon 6490M - a much more powerful machine with a much more powerful graphics card.
However, it only seems to allow me a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 on the Thunderbolt external display port - it won't give me an option for 1080p.
Any ideas? It seems strange that the Macbook Air will give me higher resultions!
    Thanks

I had similar issues to Jason with the technical documentation. It was clear on the maximum resolutions for the laptop's screen and the max resolution on an external monitor, and the max for single and dual link DVI on the adapter pages, but vague on VGA.
I suspected it should work since I have a PC laptop with a graphics card that is a generation behind that can do the full res of my monitor over VGA, but thank you BSteely for confirming this.

  • Qosmio F755-3d150 - Win 7 - no High definition on external display

    hello
after instaling windows 7 and the nvidia driver, the external screen dosent display in HD like before,
I tried to configer setting but no resolt,
What driver do i need to install?

In your other thread I read that you have problems installing some drivers.
I guess the issue is related to missing graphic card driver and therefore you are not able to choose higher display resolution for the external display.
But if you have already installed the right graphic card driver, then I would recommend you to check the external display resolution settings.

  • Problem with resolution of external display

    Hi,
I am trying to use external display with my Unibody Aluminium Macbook Pro (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 2.26Gh, snow leopard). Cable setting I use is quite complicated as it is: macbook: minidisplay port>hdmi> DVI D : display. Display is LG Flatron W2242T (4:3).
So I hooked everything up and macbook detected display without any problem. The problem arises when it comes to resolution. Maximum resolution I can set (and in fact the only except 800xsomething) is 1152x870 and not only it is to low, but also it does not respect 4:3 ratio so it looks quite bad. So bad, that i cant really work on a setup like that. When I try to change resolution to any other, Display goes black. I tried using some apps, but they dont really work.
What can be the problem here? Is it connection?
    I would appreciate any help.

And once you've cut thru the clutter of cables and adapters, remember the max you will be able to push the Flatron is its "native resolution", that happens to be:
    Screen Size
    22"
    Screen Type
    TFT LCD
    Wide Screen
    Yes
    Brightness
    300cd/m²
    Contrast Ratio
    8000:1
    Viewing Angle
    (Horizontal/Vertial)
    160/160
    Response Time
    5ms
    Resolution
    1680X1050
    Supported Colours
    16.7M Colours
(data taken from LG's product page)
If you happen to have a late model MBP with the widescreen option, the Mac and the display will be on a 1:1 ratio, both are the same. Else, if you have a regular MBP, the monitor has more resolution than the Mac (1440x900) and distortion will occur if you do video mirroring.

  • MBP Retina shows wrong resolution on external display since 10.8.4

I have a MBP retina and I'm using it with an external display, Dell U2711, connected via a Mini-DP to DP cable. It all worked amazingly well until 10.8.4 came out. Now, when I connect the display, it no longer shows the correct 2560 X 1440 resolution, but shows 1080p. The displays preferences pane does not allow going over 1080p. It does recognize the display model, though.
It started with one port. The machine has two TB ports, so one of them worked fine and the other didn't (the one closer to the user was acting up). Then it degraded further to the second port. Now, if I plug and unplug several times and fiddle with the displays control panels, I might just get it right eventually. It takes some time, but eventually the machine gets it right. At least that's what I've been experiencing in the last few days.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. It's possible that my cable is at fault, but I seriously doubt that. I'm wondering if anyone else got the same problem, just checking before I go and splurge on a new cable (these cables are not easy to find).
    Thanks,
    Z

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Can MacBook Air (2012) handle 1920x1080 resolution on external display?

    Hi there,
I was currently thinking about buying the following external display:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-E2251VR-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B0060LCBTG/ref=cm_ cr_pr_product_top
I have read mixed things about connecting macbooks to external displays so wanted to ask the following:
    1. Firstly can the MacBook air 2012 handle an external monitor with resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz?
    2. Secondly, I have heard some Macbooks, with some cables (predominantly HDMI), don't give the option of 1920x1080 when plugged in, instead cap it at around 1600 leaving the external screen blurry. Which connection is best to get the full 1080p resolution, DVI, VGA or HDMI?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer!
    Rob

    Thanks for your responses!
Captfred - I've tried plugging it into my friends screen now using my minidisplay to HDMI cable and the following options show up:
    1080i
    1080p
    720p
    1600x1400
    1440x900
    etc etc
Is the 1080p option 1920x1080? If I choose the 1080p option, the resolution looks nice and has large real estate on there, the only thing is if I full screen it the top and bottom are cut off? Is this a problem with the aspect ratio of the screen do you think?
    Thanks again

  • Highest resolution for external display for late 2012 retina?

I have a 15" late 2012 MBP with retina display.  I'd like to get an external monitor but I'm not sure about the highest resolution for an external display this Mac will support.  It looks like the 4K displays with only work with later models.  So what are you using and how do you like it?
    Thanks
    Amy

Yes, the 2012 MBP w/ Retina Display will support an external 4K display (using the Thunderbolt/mini display port)

  • Will 15" Macbook Pro be able to display higher resolution of 24" Display

This may be a daft question but if I buy a 24" Cinema Dispaly and a 15" Macbook Pro will I be able to use the highest resolution of 1920 by 1200.
Are there any problems I might regret or encounter with this setup? I thought I might go for the 15" to save a few quid and have a lighter load. (Also don't think I'd ever use an Express Card slot so figured the SD Card slot would be of more use to me.)

if I buy a 24" Cinema Dispaly and a 15" Macbook Pro will I be able to use the highest resolution of 1920 by 1200.
Yes. That computer can use a resolution of up to 2560 by 1600 on the external display and the highest resolution on the internal display simultaneously.

  • Customize resolution on external display

    Hi,
is it possible to "inactivate" a part of an external display ? For example :
I have a damaged 15" TFT Display, there's a ~1cm unreadable border on the top.
Is it somehow possible to change the output resolution from 1024*768 to 1024*600, or any other size without stretching to the whole screen surface ? This should create a back border in the damaged zone, thus preventing anything to be displayed on the broken part of the screen.
I knnow System Preference / Displays allows to choose between 1024 stretched or not -> that's what i'm looking for, but for external displays, and with custom resolution.
Thanks for reading ... and answering, if you have any idea (or just to tell me that it's not possible) !!
    Flo

I am not sure about which resolutions it offers, but I currently use the Screen Spanning Doctor to connect my iBook to the tv, projector, etc. It works well. But since it is a Third-Party App, understand that you might find some bugs, though I've had no problems.

  • More resolution on external display?

I have a 15" late 2011 MacBook Pro with a AMD Radeon 6770 1024MB graphics card. I have an Viewsonic VP2770 connected as an external display though the display port using a DVI adapter cable. The max resolution I can get on the display is 1920x1080. Would very much like to use the monitor at its max rated resolution of 2560x1440. Is there any way to achieve this?
    Thanks in advance.
    William Gazecki

MacBook Pros have had a maximum external monitor resolution of 2560 x 1600 for several years now. However, to get that resolution, you probably need to use one of only two cable types: DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort, or Dual-Link DVI (not the more common Single-Link DVI). I don't think HDMI goes above 1080p on your model of MacBook Pro.
The very latest MacBook Pros have more recent HDMI support which lets them drive a 4K (4096 x 2160) monitor.

  • Problem w/resolutions on External Display after 10.5.7 update! Fixed yet?!

After installing 10.5.7, like half of the entire planets Mac users I had problems with the resolution my MacBook displayed when connecting to my TV whether in Mirror or Extended desktop.
I promptly reverted to 10.5.6 (thank the lord they recommend a backup!) and the problem was resolved.
HOWEVER, now I want to install Safari 4 and it isn't compatible with 10.5.6....
Does anybody know if the resolution problem has been addressed by Apple?
I did try some of the fixes suggested by other users on here but they didn't work for me.

Did you try the SwitchResX app (VersionTracker.com) that apparently worked for others, according to the users in the other thread where you posted http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2004318&start=180&tstart=0.

  • Macbook pro 2011 early cannot find right resolution for external display and keeps flickering

I have a macbook pro 2011 early running 10.9, and a LG FLATRON W2242T external screen. Also, I have a VGA to miniport from Apple and a VGA to HDMI, plus a HDMI to miniport(from Apple). By just connect with VGA to miniport to my MBP, it just flickers few times and stops detecting. But by connect VGA to HDMI converter and HDMI to miniport to my MBP, it keeps flickering, a non-stop flickering. The external screen always shows no signal. However, if I connect my MBP to my TV through HDMI to miniport, it works fine. But connecting the VGA port to my TV, it gets the same problem. I have tried clear my PRAM many times, and it gets the same result. Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks

Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 external display won't work as it used while Snow Leopard, I hate you Lion so far. I cannot even Go Back!
Did you bother to backup or clone your SL installation before dumping it?

  • 1680X1050 Resolution for external display is not an option in Lion?

I am using a DVI to mini DVI connection on my MacBook Pro and did not have this problem with Snow Leopard.  Is there anyway I can get this resolution as an option?

    Hello William
I have no experience with this but somewhere on this forum I have read similar topic. Before you wait here use advanced search option and use 1680 x 1050 as searched term. I am pretty sure you will find this topic where one guy explained how to set 1680 x 1050 resolution on external monitor.
    Good luck!

  • Portege Z30-A-18M - cannot set native resolution on external display

    Hi,
I have tried to connect two different full HD displays to my Portege Z30-A-18M and I was unable to set the native resolution - maximal resolution that I can set for those is 1680x1050... I wasn't so surprised with the first one as I had some troubles with native resolution when I was connecting it to the Satellite laptop that I had before. But then the same happened when I tried the other display.
I thought that this laptop can handle higher external resolution... Is there a way how to force the native resolution for the external diplays in Windows 7?
    Thanks!

Well, I wanted to use it as extended desktop... But I tried now to set it only to external device and I am still getting 1680x1050 as max
Just a note, the first display was connected with analog (D-SUB) and the second with digital (HDMI) ...
Is there a way how to override the maximum and set my own custom resolution?
